Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the Wii does have many characteristics of popular mainstream fads. It’s instantaneously accessible, it’s unlike anything you’ve tried before, and it’s great fun to share with friends. In short, it’s everything Nintendo said it would be and it has captured the world’s imagination. The only downside is that the world is easily distracted. Tickle Me Elmo captured the world’s attention at one point, as did Furbies. They were both instantly accessible, were unlike anything people had seen before, and were fun to share with friends. But a year later, after everyone had seen them and tried them out, their popularity waned. That's... quite a ground-breakingly poor analogy. It rather misses out on the number of things that began life as fads but also went on to have sustained popularity. Pokemon was also a fad. Not a fad I like, but it's still going strong, even if it's had to constantly reinvent itself (something I believe the Wii to be very capable of doing). When you think about it, videogaming itself started life as a fad.
Some things are destined to burn brightly and die out. Some things burn brightly but continue to do so. I feel the Wii is in the latter camp.

I agree with you on that point Paul. Apparently, the Wii can only do one thing. But that's completely wrong. It will handle much better at FPS's than the other systems. But then, you get completely new game ideas as well. Like Trauma Centre, and stuff like that. It certainly isn't a one trick pony, as this guy has made it out to be.
I hate the way that people think that innovation in gaming is automatically a gimmick, as it's always Nintendo that innovates, and therefore appears in a lot of peoples eyes as being a crappy, gimmicky company.

I mean, when I'm down to deciding the height of my character's cheekbones and the distance between his eyes, I have rather a tendency to give up and use Colin Montgomerie.

I'm surprised Ebaum hasn't stolen it yet. Or that SA goons haven't done something extremely similar to the point of plagiarism.

Thing is, so far it's been just a new way to move things around as opposed to a true 'revolution', with a few exceptions. Look at Zelda, Prince of Persia, Monkey Ball and many others: just ports/sequels with added wiimote controls. In the end, the games are the most important part of a console. Do you really think the DS would've been any good if its library consisted entirely of N64/SNES ports with tacked on Wii controls? The DS started new series and genres: Trauma Center, Ouendan/EBA, Phoenix Wright and others. So far, Wii hasn't gotten a lot of great new franchises, so it's not truly 'revolutionary'.
On a completely different note, I was just playing Disgaea 2 a while ago. After almost 40 hours of gameplay (yes, I need a life), I'm still undecided on it. The first half of the game was brilliant, from both a plot and gameplay standpoint. The second half however is just a load of pointless filler battles with recolors of past enemies and crappy plotlines. I heard it gets better later, though.
On to Zelda: Twilight Princess. The wolf bits, while different, aren't all that fun compared to the classic Zelda bits. One thing I always hated about Zelda was having a relatively difficult dungeon leading to a hilariously easy and pathetic boss battle. Ocarina of Time did it with the giant dodongo boss, Wind Waker did it with the Tower of the Gods boss and TP continues the tradition with the posessed Goron patriarch. And while I like the new art style, I also miss the cell shading.
while I like the new art style, I also miss the cell shading.
But others didn't. That's why they switched.
I guess it was about time they did a super-realism-graphic'ed Zelda anyway.
But TP isn't really realistic. Link, Illia and that annoying kid you have to save (forgot his name) all look like generic anime characters and everyone else is cartoony and weird.

The Wii controls could be used for SUCH great things.
I hope that in time developers will get past the gimmicky stage and really think about how to use the remote in an interesting way, rather than "Shake the controller to attack!".
Nintendo should sell Wii development kits for a relatively low price (I heard $150, but it might've been higher) to independents. Then there will REALLY be some neat stuff (And bad stuff too, I guess. Indies are hardly infallible).

The story battles aren't that great. You can easily do a chapter in 30 mins if you turn on the fast mode options. But then again, the story parts were never the important bits of the Nippon Ichi games.
No, Disgaea 2 is possibly the largest and best value for money Tactical RPG out there. I mean, 200+ hours for game I payed Ł10 + trade ins for? This game deserves a 10/10. I may do a totally biased review on the RealVG forum about it at some point.
If you just do the story part of the game and then leave it there, you're a fool. Get in that item world and fight those pirates. Move those felony residents (forgotten their name) inside the Subpeona items into a weapon/armour you want to build up, and throw 9 people into the gate and give them all the felony at once. Transmigrate your characters into the more powerful versions, or turn them into a prinny if they've got felonies.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I won't, but you know how when you go to attack with a character there's an option that's greyed out and replaced with question marks? When you unlock that, the amount of time you will spend on the game will double. Guaranteed.
You know how most games have a harder-than-the-final-boss enemy hiding in it somewhere? When you kill the one hiding in this game, it's still not over.
As long as you don't get bored (but there's plenty to do) this game won't end until you've beaten the hardest battle with "stronger enemys" passed inside the dark assembly the maximum number of times.
It's only when you start getting into all the secret stuff in this game that you realise just how clever the developers have been. This game is in my opinion THE BEST game to have come out in recent times.
Of course, if you don't like tactical RPG's then it's not for you, but YOU. MUST. PLAY. THIS. GAME. Seriously. If a Disgaea 3 comes out on the PS3, I will go out and buy a PS3 just for it. That's how amazingly good the Disgaea series is. The original was great. Disgaea 2 is easily 5x better.
Thanks for the tips, Melon. The gameplay's still great, but it was pretty annoying how the plot went downhill at the end.
Anyway, more negative comments on the Wii. (http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2007/05/08/geek-out-xbox-uber-boss-robbie-bach-takes-a-shot-at-nintendo-s-underpowered-wii-does-he-manage-to-score-a-bulls-eye-or-just-shoot-himself-in-the-foot.aspx)
does the Wii have programmable shaders, either vertex shaders, pixel shaders, or both, as did the original Xbox? The answer, according to our first source, was no.
Our second source echoed that assessment of the Wii's graphics chip, comparing its fixed-function design to that the Gamecube, saying that it was "basically pretty similar" to Nvidia's seven-year-old GeForce2.
...
Why, by the way, did Nintendo opt for a fixed-function graphics chip instead of a programmable GPU, like the PS3 or Xbox 360? "It's all about cost," our first source told us. "Fixed function circuitry is a lot cheaper to make." Those cost savings have not only resulted in a console that is cheaper than its competitors, but also much more profitable for Nintendo. And we know full well how much Nintendo loves its profits.
Those cost savings have not only resulted in a console that is cheaper than its competitors, but also much more profitable for Nintendo. And we know full well how much Nintendo loves its profits.
That's rubbish! Things like that was what made the console really cheap to make and buy, not what made the console really cheap to make and moderatively expensive to buy.

*shrug* The Wii isn't so hot when it comes to graphics. So what else is new? It's about time the industry stopped obsessing over graphics: it's very much becoming a question of diminishing returns, anyway.
What I am a bit concerned about is power: something with hundreds of separately controlled, interacting AIs like SupCom or Spore do need a lot of power, and the Wii is behind on that front. But then, I have my PC for that sort of thing.
That's rubbish! Things like that was what made the console really cheap to make and buy, not what made the console really cheap to make and moderatively expensive to buy.It is interesting though that, despite it being the cheapest of the three current-gen consoles, Nintendo make a profit on every Wii sold, unlike almost every other console ever (the standard approach to the console market being the "Xerox" approach of making a loss on the machine, but compensating with profit on the games/toner cartridges).

I would only be annoyed with Nintendo if they were selling the Wii at the prices of the 360 and PS3.
But they're not. They're selling for half the price.
So not only is the Wii cheaper than the other two companies, but Ninendo isn't selling at a loss, which ensures that they will survive into future generations.
And seriously. Is there ANY company that DOESN'T like profits? Come on.
I agree with Paul about the lack of power being a concern. That's ten times as important as graphics.

Just need to mention that Will Wright says at the end of this video that we can expect Spore around the end of this year possibly for christmas. BUT this vid was filmed 2 days before the delay announcement.
But still, for multiple reasons, there may still be hope that we could get Spore earlier. (Read some of the comments at Xspore.com if you need some info on those)
What I am a bit concerned about is power: something with hundreds of separately controlled, interacting AIs like SupCom or Spore do need a lot of power, and the Wii is behind on that front.
Would you like to hear a rumor? :)
The rumor goes, that Nintendo is just trying out the new controls and features to get peoples responses. And the next gen Wii will come out in a few more years, but have POWA, and the fun gaming along side it. I mean really, Nintendo COULD of put all their time into developing new graphics. And it would of probably turned out at the last of the three ANYWAY, just like the gamecube. Now that they know that people are LOVIN' the new style of game play, then can add the graphics next time, KNOWING that they have a great formula to work with. If sony or microsoft tries to copy them, they will only be imitators. So who knows, the next gen just might have Nintendo back into the lead.

Well, the Ratchet and Clank gameplay is one of those 'doesn't get old' styles of gameplay. Just like FPS gameplay.
But FPSs keep improving over time, all the recent ones aren't just the original Doom or Goldeneye with shiny new graphics and nextgen bloom. This isn't the case for Ratchet and Clank, since they did introduce a lot of new weapons and other things, from what I've seen.

I am pretty sure if you asked just about any real gamer out there if they would like to have a PS3, their answer would be a resounding "Yes!" I think a lot of this goes back to the proliferation of the Internet, where a very vocal minority can make a lot of noise and potentially alter perceptions of the masses, whether they are accurate or not. A lot of this, naturally, is driven by the media who seem focused on taking swipes at us lately, without taking in the full picture.

Who said anything about polygons? I was just pointing out that, even if it's not necesary for Smash Bros to have great graphics, it's still better to have it with great graphics than just regular graphics. In this case the "changing background" thing is not necesary at all, but it's still better than if it wasn't there, since is an addition that doesn't take anything from the game, but adds to it even if not much.

And some stuff about Pokemon: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2439721&perpage=40&pagenumber=130
Look for "Douglas Dinsdale"'s posts.
You basically answered your question, really. "They won't translate an RPG that has only a cult following." Go talk to anyone at NOA who was involved in the Earthbound project, and they will likely roll their eyes over memories of being hounded by Shgesato Itoi over the wording of the translation, the dumb decision to package the game with T-shirts that were promptly stolen or lost at the retail level, and the hilariously low sales of Earthbound that's the stuff of legend at Redmond.
Also, Electroplankton's for DS, and it took little effort to localize.
In contrast, M3's for a dying game system (in Japan, there's been nothing on the release schedule since FFVI late last year).
It will also be a total ***** to localize what with the text volume and idiosyncratic writing.
It has overtly gay and bestial elements that can't be discreetly skirted around.
These risque elements will mean the game will get a higher rating, likely closer to "M" than "T," which will severely restrict the distribution because retailers do not like dealing with controversial titles, especially one on a dying system with an extremely limited sales potential.
Seriously, from a business standpoint M3 makes zero sense.
Honestly, I believe they're just making up excuses. They can release stuff like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots and Urban Yeti while translating a game with a huge cult following would be a waste of time and money? When did that ever stop Atlus from publishing whatever weird, obscure RPG they could find?
And about the "controversial" content... I'm not even going to mention "bestial elements", but I really doubt having a gay character would make it worthy of an M rating. Ever played both Swordcraft Story games with a female character? That's the gayest (quite literally) thing ever, and both games got an E+10 rating.

I really have no idea.
There's no reason to give Mother3 anything beyond an E10 (10 years and up) rating.
Unless a plotline with drama beyond "The world is in DANGER by the EVIL EMPEROR!!!" is enough to get a label of "depraved" nowadays.
If he meant bestial as in animal sex, then he's an idiot.
The monkey has a girlfriend, but I don't remember anything as big as even a kiss.
And as for it being a b**** to localize, kook at Elite Beat Agents. That required an entirely new GAME.
I was labeling "mostly true" to the problems with selling the game here. Earthbound sold badly because it came at a time when RPGs were unpopular.
If Nintendo didn't think it would make a profit, they wouldn't translate it.
Then Final Fantasy came out in America, but by that time, Earthbound was dead. :(
Of course, Mother3 is AWESOME, and now that people actually like RPGs it might sell decently, but bah.
I actually doubt it would sell well here at all. American consumers don't care about good stories.
Thank god for independent translation peoples on the internets (http://www.mother3.org/). The moment that's done I'm going to import a copy from Japan and install it, because I'm not gonna settle for playing it on an emulator.
Hey, I didn't even mention how fantastic the game's music is.
It's fantastic. :(
I just hate how there are so many crappy games that are localized over here, but the one brilliant one isn't.
It's better than most of the p!ss poor Sonic games, but those are translated because they sell so damn well.

Since timeless classics such as Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots Advance and Urban Yeti sold extremely well, and publishing them was truly a brilliant decision on Nintendo's part. However, an RPG with a huge cult following would have been a huge flop. Yes, that makes sense.
The stuff about controversial content is just as stupid. Did they *actually* fear a lawsuit over some sexual reference? Was that his crappy idea of a joke?
I mean, the simple fact that he added unfunny Somethingawful references to Pokemon's translation, in an attempt to seek respect from goons (of all people), should be enough to ruin his credibility. I swear, if I ever had to translate a game I wouldn't fill it with obscure internet humor. How the hell would a small child, Pokemon's target audience, react to a reference to My Tank is Fight? It's not even a well known thing; it's a book written by a SA writer that only nerds have heard of. It's on the same level of idiocy as replacing a NPC's dialogue with "LONGCAT IS LONG, DESU" for no reason.

I also really want Nintendo to localize Rhythm Tengoku for the GBA. It's a great and quirky rhythm game made by the people who made WarioWare.
Rhythm Tengoku proves that you can create an innovative concept without the use of touch screens and wiimotes. I doubt they'll ever localize it, though. Gaming needs more stuff like the Wii Prince of Persia and less *actual* innovation.

Isn't Crash already quite successful in Japan? I fail to see how these new designs would help boost sales there. Coco looks like something a retarded furry would draw.
Despite the bad character designs, the gameplay seems interesting. Nothing breathtaking but it looks like it might be fun.
Acording to wikipedia the "gloveless hadns with markings" design of Crash will only be used for this one game and it is not just a random redesign.

OK, so maybe Crash was in need of an update. I mean, the original 3 games were linear and seemed to get easier as the series moved on, but seeing as it was a 1 hit kill scenario, it kind of needed to be.
Hmmm... Maybe I'm too much of an old-skool Crash fan, I also preffered the original Jak and Daxter where he couldn't speak over the other 2, but this isn't really Crash, is it? I always thought it was the simplicity of the original games that gave them their appeal. Crash 2 could get difficult when going for some of the gems, but it was appealable to all and everybody could play it. Heck, some of my friends mums played Crash 2!
So he's not about "smashing them all" crate breaking anymore? This makes me sad. Here's a smilie to prove it :(

the gameplay is pretty good. on it's own, it's quite an inventive concept. mixed with Crash, it did seem to be more of a big confusion as to what it was when I first saw it.
The gameplay looks....repetitive. "LOL, I HAVE TO GETS ON THE MONSTURS. I WILL PUCH AND USE MY FOOTS KIKS AND MAKE HIM DISZAY! THEN I WILL RIYD iT :3" If that was an just an option to do, that would be fine. Although I have the feeling they are going to make it so you almost HAVE to ride the monster things. As superblob says, I don't think that's the problem. I guess it's more like people buying what they are not expecting. They imagine a crash platform game, and they get a beat 'em up.
Remember tetris? it was repetitive as hell, but also one of the most well sold game in history :O Or mario... Street fighter... etc..
Why does everyone hate Crash 3? It's just Crash 2 with more variety. Crash 2 was just the same thing over and over again, with a new enemy type being thrown in every six levels or so. Sometimes it felt like playing the exact same level, over and over again. This also happened in Crash 3, but there were a lot of vehicles, enemies and level types thrown in, so it didn't feel repetitive at all. All the new moves like the hover and double jump really added to the experience, too.
Crash 3's graphics and animations were also superior from an artistic standpoint. Crash has always seemed like a tribute to old Looney Tunes cartoons, but this didn't really work in Crash 2 because of the bland, extremely generic enemy designs that just didn't look cartoony enough. Crash 3 fixed this by introducing enemy-specific death animations, a lot of original enemies, level themes and other things.

I liked Crash Bandicoot. CB 1-3 were great. I liked CB3 the most. Being able to use all sorts of vehicles was awesome. I also loved the Fruit Bazooka.
Wrath of Cortex (CB4) had stupid long loading times with a stupid screen of Crash falling endlessly in the air with really annoying music in the background. I still liked the gameplay, but the excrutiatingly long loading times really lets it down.
Crash Twinsanity was rubbish. Utter crap music, IMO driving me crazy including stupid remixes of classic songs. The game was too short, took me about 5 hours. I like teaming up with Cortex, and the other characters are good but I just wish it could have been longer and not have such crappy music. Some parts were quite hilarious though.

Welcome to the present... Games are evolving... the bad part is that the results are not usually good...
Think about it: New formulas are going to the new capabilities of the consoles... just to show how good the consoles are, forgetting the game.
NOW, if you look at the handheld ports... they usually are... OLD SCHOOL! why? these little babys don't need to show too much power... So the classical part remains... examples:

I liked Crash Bandicoot. CB 1-3 were great. I liked CB3 the most. Being able to use all sorts of vehicles was awesome. I also loved the Fruit Bazooka.
Wrath of Cortex (CB4) had stupid long loading times with a stupid screen of Crash falling endlessly in the air with really annoying music in the background. I still liked the gameplay, but the excrutiatingly long loading times really lets it down.
Crash Twinsanity was rubbish. Utter crap music driving me crazy including stupid remixes of classic songs. The game was too short, took me about 5 hours. I like teaming up with Cortex, and the other characters are good but I just wish it could have been longer and not have such crappy music. Some parts were quite hilarious though.
After seeing the video for Crash of the Titans, I thought "WTF?!"
Health meter + score counter + combos = NO NO NO! This is just NOT a proper CB game. What happened to smashing crates, collecting Fruit and picking up Gems? And what is up with Crash's voice?!
This game better be good or I might stop buying any more Crash games.
I stopped reading there. The music in that game is brilliant.

it hasn't been the same since Naughty dog stopped doing it. something was missing after that. I knew from playing The wrath of Cortex that it probably wouldn't be any good after that. it had its moments though, and Nitro cart was probabbly the best Vivendi did.
ever since Vivendi stopped and Radical started doing it, however, it seems to have got worse. even though I wasn't too big a fan of them, they seemed to do a better job than Radical are now.
one thing that's changed is the humour. the Naugthy dog games often had quite quiet atmospheric levels, and not always funny, but it seems the latest developers are trying to make the series funny all the time- which is both next to impossible and isn't really very entertaining either...

It's rather worrying to me that quite a few of the new stages seem to be of the "Fly around on a small platform while we show off our fantastic graphics!" variety, like Mute City in SSBM.
And Mute City was one of my least favorite stages in SSBM.

Glod damn those mini-tornado things in Toejam and Earl.
... So yeah, I've just put some Wii Points on for Virtual Console shopping. I've got 1200 points left, which is an awkward sort of number. I bought Toejam and Earl because it's a game I've wanted ever since it was promised to come as one of the games with the Amstrad Mega PC and didn't (and then after that I never could find it in the shops).
I did have the idea of getting Super Mario 64, what with all the good things that have been said about it over the years, and a desire in recent times to improve my knowledge of the games outside of my Sega-based upbringing. But 1000 points is a hefty sum, and I need a little more convincing. Anyone fancy doing that for me?

SM64 was really one of those must-play games, and packed full of nostalga to boot! It's a pretty long game, and one of those games where you can go back to it again and play it again.
Wait, no, I forgot who I'm talking to. Let me try a better approach:
There are very few bottomless pits!
Speaking of Virtual Console, Magical Drop (the first one) will be released for 800 points!

Super Mario 64 is definitely worth it- lots of things, like the ammount of moves you can do, are more detailed than most platformers today (most seem to either rip off Mario 64 or be too patronising and childish) and many things in it have been ripped off by many games after it.

Shrek RPG
actually that would be good. I'm pretty bored of all tie-ins for films being platformers. especially kids films. platformers are actually the hardest to make (I know, I've tried it) and most of the time it doesn't even fit the atmosphere of the film. it's not like platformers are particularly childish, either. I find a lot of them quite hard. such as the Harry potter & Series of unfortunate events games. they would have been better if they followed the film- they cut out some great scenes that would've translated into gameplay very well (even if it was slow) and replaced them with things like "get around this maze in the dungeons and collect Bertie botts every flavour beans which are massive and float for some strange reason"
so, yeah, a Shrek Rpg would be neat.

*Gets SM64 for the Virtual Console*
First impressions:
1. You'd think there'd be at least one 3D platformer where "attack" and "read notice board/talk to people" weren't on the same button (Fair enough, Sonic Adventure does it too, but Super Mario 64 set the precedent). Punching the thin air around a notice board is getting tiring.
2. Falling off of things and having to do the same bit of level twenty times is not fun, but I guess it could be worse. It could be a bottomless pit.
3. The great thing about only saving the game after you get a star is that I can reset the console every time I lose a life and work until I can complete the level without dying.
4. The Big Whomp's monologue before you battle him is hilarious.

surprisingly less than most games, though. I remember you can die more frequently of losing power than you can of falling. most pits later will either just drop you further down a course (like the hill in bob-omb battlefield) I think it's mostly so people don't have to keep restarting stages.

anyway, yeah I mentioned a while back I have Ocarina of time now -I just haven't had a chance to play much of it until now, what with all the other things I've had to do. first off, I haven't got too far, only at Goron city at the moment. a few things that get annoying are the fact there is sometimes a lot of distance to cross, and even though it looks nice, I've had to continuously roll across Hyrule feild about 4 times so far, trying to find out where to go.
also early on I kept accidently smashing signs by pressing B instead of A and then not being able to read them without going away and coming back again. it's not a problem so much anymore, though. the things I like so far are the plot- the exploration is good too, the environments are a lot bigger than most games I remember from that era, except there isn't always very much in them, with lots of empty space. anyway, as far as I know I'm not too far into it, so I might feel different at the end of the game.

The most interesting update yet on the SSB:B site:

interesting indeed!
my guesses are that they might add 3rd party stuff there, and that it might be like an alternate pokeball.

Oot stuff.
You have to remember that this is a 10 year old game.
Games have moved on, and it doesn't stand up quite as well as it used to.
It's still damn good though.
as for the sign thing, try playing zelda's lulaby in front of a broken one. The game's full of neat stuff like that.

when you get epona's song (to ride the horse, after earning it), or the "warping songs" you won't find this annoying anymore.
I liked this one better. :P

I've noticed on the characters page of the SSB:B Website that Snake isn't listed.
You don't think that...
Anyways, i do think the "Assist Trophies" are an interesting addition to the SSB games. :)

I don't quite approve, but as an assistant, she would have potencial.
I agree, she would be better as an assist trophy.
