Well it doesn't look too bad. I mean, the animations are still off-putting (especially the really slow spin Sonic does), and the whole thing of trying to ride on the success of its predecessors has reached maximum level now, but it does have multiple paths alright (which is the thing I was worried most about).

...at least, that's what I was thinking, up until the point where the player had difficulty going up a loop after hitting the spring, and where Sonic started standing near-horizontally and walking in place (and exactly horizontally), at which point I immediately thought "Sonic 2006"!It's pretty obvious the level isn't even complete, much less the mechanics. There's a reason it's not official footage.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. The problem with getting up the loop, yes, but standing horizontally doesn't exactly strike me as something that they just so happened to completely miss in the early stages.

How's about we stop *****ing about issues with an incomplete game?

Instead I'd like to point out that Cavestory Wii is out in america land. It's got upgraded graphics (whitch look ace) and a bunch of new modes and difficulty settings. Sounds good!

Not so good is the new translation, whitch is considerably worse than the old fan translation. Also good job cutting out balrog's fan-favorite catchphrase and replacing it with a dumb pop culture reference! That's bound to go down well.

They aparently also decided to take a great big steaming **** all over the music. compare the original version of the boss theme Gravity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBxHFoaxKEs) with the new version (http://tindeck.com/listen/vecy).

Thankfully you can choose to use the original music with the new graphics.

Hopefuly they'll give it a little bit of spit and polish before they send it europe-wards (why does a dowloadable game not have simultaneous european release date anyhow? what is this 1997? gosh.).

The biggest selling point is the new graphics, redrawn by Pixel at twice the resoloution.

You get three save slots.

There's now three difficulty modes, Easy, Normal (identical to the PC version) and Hard (3hp no missiles). Easy and hard feature a slightly modified quote sprite (yellow clothes for Easy, blond hair and fleshtone for Hard).

There's a 'Sanctuary time trial' but that's just the option to play hell from the main menu. No idea how that decides what weapons/health you get. It's availiable from the very start.

There's a boss rush mode too.

and there's something Called 'Curly Story' where you play as Curly Brace. from what I've seen it's just the main game with a different sprite and dialogue, at least up to the egg corridor. I don't know if it's a prequel and you end up in the sandzone or if you end up rescuing Quote and beating the doctor or what. Looks pretty neat though.

I should stress that I don't own the game, I'm just following it obsesively because I assumed it was being released everywhere today.

I was made very un-calm by the revelation that "HUZZAH!!!" is no longer Balrog's catch phrase. But I'm not going to get angry, nuh-uh.

nope.

I suppose there is still a chance they'll change it back for Europe, but I don't know... Was it too hard to get the fan translation's permission?

It seems insulting that they thought the music needed changing, Pixel's no proffessional, but we could all tell his music-ing skills were top notch.

From the Wii music that I could find (everyone pretty much selects the original), it seems the problem is it's become a lot more bland and samey. They use the same notes as the original, but the changes and instruments are a lot less distinct and unique, so it all kinda blends in. Plus horrible clashy additions like that screech.

Everything else seems ok though. It's by no means a major improvement over the original, but a nice "special edition".

So I talked to a friend who does own it.

From what he told me, Philby's pretty much got everything, except that:
1: Curly's Story really is just the same game but with changed dialogue. At least, as far as he's gotten anyway.
2: The music cuts between rooms, and is extremely annoying.
3: The Sanctuary Time Attack is rubbish, because you have to get all your power-ups from chests. Accompanied by the five-second Got Upgrade melody. Which you have to go through EVERY TIME YOU DIE! And this is all IN THE SANCTUARY!
4: ...except, oddly enough, the Boss Rush mode doesn't have the pause-for-five-seconds-on-upgrade-acquisition thing. And is apparently rather well done.
5: It's a little bit buggy.

About Cavestory Wii:

Yeah, the new music is pretty lame. It irks me that they went with trying to make it sound like chiptunes, because the original music already did that and did it much better. I would have expected them to change the music to something more instrumental, kind of like going from NES to SNES quality. The new graphics are nice, the gameplay seems pretty much the same.

Haven't tried Boss rush, Sanctuary or Curly Story yet.

If I understand correctly it works on exactly the same principal as 3d glasses, except the image splitting lenses are part of the screen.

It only really works if you're looking directly at it, so while it's great for hanhelds and laptops you won't see any 3D tvs using the technology. That's probably the reason that nobodies even heard of this type of 3D screen before, dispite it being old news.

Combining the 3D display with Headtracking (check out this DSiware game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5QSclrIdlE&feature=player_embedded)) could lead to some very awesome results.

Of course, while the 3D sounds neat, I'm much more interested in the actual specs of the thing, unlike the DSi It's suposed to be a full on sucsessor with a significant increase in power. All we really know is that it's going to have two screens (at least one of them a touch screen) and two cameras so it can be properly bacwards compatable. There were a bunch of rumours after GDC about a DS2 with gamecube level graphics and flush screens. There's also been recent rumors about it having an analogue stick and rumble built in.

There's also some crazy rumours about force-feedback styluses and accelerometers. Rumors are all we've got to go on until E3 in june.

Some apparently reliable sources have been throwing the term Parralax barier LCD (http://www.develop-online.net/news/34273/Rumour-Nintendo-3DS-uses-parallax-barrier-tech) around.

Parralax Barrier Screens have been around for years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNVhlEkakxY) and provide 3D without the need for special glasses or motion sensing trickery.

I'm not saying that the 3Ds won't do head tracking (the DSi can already do that, so of course it will) but if that's all it does then that's not even real 3D. Headtracking only gives the illusion of 3D when it's moving. When you're not moving it's still just a single flat image. Real 3d feeds two slightly different images into each eye and your brain combines them into a 3D image. This is seeing in sterio.

Edit: and if you still think the idea of no-glassses sterioscopic 3D screens on mobile devices is an impossible dream, check this out: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1597252/hitachi-3d-mobile-tips

You were talking about a new DS. He wants to see a new DS without screen gap (with older games simulating the gap so they still make sense). It's not related to the 3D stuff.

I question the value of gapless screens though. If they have different capabilities like now, it would just make it more confusing. Otherwise just merge them into one.

Apparently, I was wrong about the part on "adequate". It runs Modern Warfare 2 on highest settings and resolution COMPLETELY fine.

If anyone is interested, Specs are:
Intel Core i5 430M 2.26 GHz (With turbo boost technology, that boosts the power to 2.52-53 GHz when doing demanding tasks like playing games.)
4 Gigabyte DDR3 RAM
ATI Moblity Radeon HD 5650 1 Gigabyte GRAM.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
640 Gigabyte HDD space
15.6" 16:9 HD LED LCD.. Uhh durr (It has a very weird resolution. 1366 x 768)

I also just got a new computer, to replace this dieing hulk of a laptop I'm stuck with. My current junker has a pathetic 2.4GHz AMD chip(single core), 1 Gig of ram and a crappy video card. And a variety of issues, including a dead cd drive, no working USB ports, as well as some integrated things not working, like my webcam, all thanks to a faulty motherboard.

My new computer has 2.5GHz quad, 4 gigs of ram, but needs a new video card, currently its loaded with an integrated GMA card, so shared memory, ew.

The hilarious thing about all this? No monitor. So I've got a far superior computer, that is completely useless, and a junker, that could suddenly become useless.

The nearly gapless screens are a heavily rumoured feature of the 3DS. The idea is that in some games they will function as a single screen and in others they won't. Presumably this means that both screens will have identical capabilities at least in terms of graphics.

The 3d screens is going to result in some HDtv-advert level nonsense when it comes to representing something a standard tv screen cannot possibly display. I can see it now, pokemon literally popping out of the device, mario kicking a koopa shell into young childrens faces.

Also, back to Cave story Wii, apparently the new music is so terrible because it's bugged. Thats right, the music issue that plagued the IGN videos from last year is still in the game. :p

They're planning on fixing it for the EU release, along with changing Balrog's catchphrase back to Huzzah (or at the very least something that isn't a reference to a sft drink that isn't even sold over here.

Although they're still better than the competition. Sony and Microsoft both love not actually showing the game or console at all, and instead prefer showing some big metaphor for the whole thing.

MW 1 was an amazing accomplishment, refined and honed through a long development cycle. MW2 was a slightly less refined sequel with a (presumably) slightly shorter development cycle. the new one, however, is a sequel made entirely to cash in on a franchise being forced out the door by a development team that sees nothing but dollar signs. the release date is ENTIRELY too soon for there to be much in the way of advancement and I will bet the access to my forum account that it isn't half as good as even MW2.

I mean, seriously. you don't fire the two leads of a project and then expect the team they were leading to work as well as they had been before; even if you DO allow for the same amount of care they put into their previous works. if you cut the time for said works down to less than half on top of all that, you can't possibly expect good results.

The new one's being done by the World at War people, right? They use the second developer so they can release COD titles annually while maintaining a 2-year development cycle. They'll have exactly the same amount of time as IW did with MW2.

Like WaW, it's not going to be spectacular, but it won't be out and out terrible. The whole infinty ward fiasco doesn't really affect them at all.

The next Modern warfare release is likely to be subsantially worse, if reports about low morale at IW are to be belived. I doubt much of the original staff will be left at that point, not to mention potential legal proccedings etc.

Yes, that's right, they've now decided that having speed is COMPLETELY unnecessary by making it that you can just walk up slopes and loops now. I mean, one of the big complaints about the 3D games was that speed was that they copped out on needing speed by having too many speed boosts right before loops and slopes, but... UGH!

Call of Duty Black Op's will be developed by treyarch, it has been said many times.ah, so this is treyarch's next one, then? then yeah, it'll probably be decent. about on par with World at War or a little bit better. it's IW i no longer have faith in :p

Even if it is as good as CoD 4, I shall be happy.good to know you'll be happy if it's as good as the best game of that year and one of the best shooters of all time. nice to see you're easily pleased.

Yeah, there's three Call Of Duty games in the works at the moment.

I'd comment about how ridiculous it is, but this is from the same publisher that makes four Guitar Hero games a year.

Okay, I know I've riffed on Sonic4 a LOT already, but this really does just take the cake.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6u9qPdyzWk

Yes, that's right, they've now decided that having speed is COMPLETELY unnecessary by making it that you can just walk up slopes and loops now. I mean, one of the big complaints about the 3D games was that speed was that they copped out on needing speed by having too many speed boosts right before loops and slopes, but... UGH!

World at War was fairly dull and uninspired. By no means a bad game, but it's got nothing on CoD4 or even MW2.
This is kinda true of all Treyarch installments to the franchise particularly CoD3.

That was probably designed for the wiimote/sixaxis and the 360 is just getting the short end of the stick. Not that it's any more appealing that way tho, it's just the obligatory "LOOK, MOTION CONTROLS" that came with the new generation.

No, Infinity Ward states that they don't believe in the PC as a viable gaming platform. Because they are the developers.

They even made the PC version a very half-assed attempt at porting from the console. Thank god I can even play it, considering they don't tend to the PC community at all.

That way you'll get a lot of the DLC (map packs as of now) for free as patches, which you'd have to buy for the consoles.

I also suggest you get the limited edition in stores that still have them, which will give you a bunch of unlocks right from the start. Especially the tracer dart gun.

^^^Nobody really enjoys playing MW2, It just kind of makes you really angry all the time. Then you spend £10 on the map pack and begin to suspect you've developed stockholm syndrome.

Jesus christ Overgrown is a terrible map. I didn't think they could design a more obnoxiously sniper-focused levelthan Derail but by jove they did. I haven't managed to play a real game on Crash, but I get the feeling the ridiculous three-story sniper tower is going to drive me nuts. I never played MW1, but I imagine they were better balanced in the game they were actualy designed for.

It's a good thing the three real new maps are top-notch. I wish IW could somehow travel backwards through time and design all the other maps to such a high standard.

Terminal, Estate and Skidrow could really do with a few more back routes to objectives, Kerachi and Invasion could get their giant corridors of death sorted out and Derail could just not have been made in the first place godamn.

Yes, it is. I still love MW2, but Battlefield Bad Company 2 is too awesome.

Also, in MW2 the AUG Hbar with Grip and Sleight of Hand Pro, Stopping Power Pro, and whatever perk you want for perk 3 (except Scrambler) is a beast setup. I played Free for all with it yesterday, and got many beastly games with it.

If there's any gun that needs removed right now from the game, its this. I mean, grip on the AUG makes it more accurate than all 4 snipers, and its already got good damage, good accuracy and a fast reload.

I'm not that impressed with the old maps that much either, but I love Storm and Bailout so much for some reason.

The maing gist of it was 'the magazine features in the game, and famitsu's owner features in adverts for the game (printed in the magazine) therefore they must have been paid off to give it a perfect score".

Despite 1) famitsu's history of giving MGS games high scores (MGS$ got a perfect 40 too) and b) why would the biggest and most respected videogame magazine in japan take a bribe to big up a game they would likely give a very positive review anyway? This isn't some dickhead from IGN giving Goldenaxe beast rider an 9/10 this is a respected magazine giving a AAA title top marks, not to mention this isn't the first time Famitsu has been featured in a game, should we discount their review of No More Heroes too?

Also this is a Japenese Magazine, so 99% of Kotaku's readers will never have the opertunity to buy this magazine they probably can't even read.

All of this under a gigantic sensationalis headline decrying the magazine as completely untrustworthy. Investagative journalism at it's finest.:p

Here are 13 facts about Portal 2 taken from the UK Xbox magazine.

1. THIS IS NOT A TEST

The original Portal was a relatively short experience buried away in 2007's The Orange Box, as Valve genuinely didn't know if anybody would like it. Having ascertained that everybody does, the sequel is bigger, bolder and longer, so we're expecting a full retail release when it arrives this Christmas.

2. THE BANDS BACK TOGETHER (AND BIGGER)

The bigger project requires a bigger development team, with Valve swelling its numbers from eight to 24. Original script writer Erik Wolpaw returns and is aided by both Left 4 Dead series writer Chet Faliszek and College Humour/National Lampoon humorist Jay Pinkerton.

3. AND THE MUSIC IS STILL ALIVE

Also reappearing is Jonathan Coulton, who penned credit-closer song Still Alive. While Valve thinks there will be a song finale again, don't count on it being a remix - the original track will be threaded through the game proper, making appearances in surprising ways.

4. GLADOS RETURNS

The crazy AI rises from the grave to torment/test Aperture Science Lab rat Chell, who was recaptured at the end of the first game. Valve wants to continue and deepen the relationship between you and GLaDOS. How vindictive is the psychotic AI going to be now that you've killed her once?

5. SHE'S NOT ALONE...

The orbs that you saw light up in the room with the cake at the original's end? They are Personality Cores and play a big role in the sequel. Similiar to GLaDOS, they're imbued with their own personality. Since her 'death' in the original, they've taken over the running of the Aperture Science facility and are trying to clean the place up. The first one you meet who awakens you is Wheatley, who you can carry and use at the game's start to jack into ports to open doors and throw switches.

6. BUT NEITHER ARE YOU

Portal 2 will come with both a full single- player and cooperative- player campaign. The leatter casts you and a friend as sentient mechanoids, evolved from a gun turret and Personality Core. You have to work together using a portal gun each to solve puzzles, requiring a lot of team talk for precise timing. You can play online or split-screen.

7. ITS FUTURE IMPERFECT

The game's set hundreds of years after the first, with lush vegetation overrunning a lot of the once- sterile building, constrasting sharply with the Apple- like design aesthetic. What's happened in the intervening years will be explained, but not, we're told, through Bioshock style audio diaries.

8. ITS A FRESH INSTALL

With the lab a wreck, GLaDOS is rebuilding as you start your new set of tests. As such, you'll be travelling through test rooms, and downtrodden maintenance areas from the start as GLaDOS haphazardly directs you to the next puzzle room. So expect a lot more behind the scenes views of the facility.

9. IT'S PIPE MANIA

You used them as temporary escape chutes in the original, but now the Pneumatic Diversity Ports that deposited Weighed Storage Cubes into test rooms are now new gameplay mechanics. The glorified suction tubes are perfect for hoovering up gun turrets with a well- placed portal or two.

10. THERE'S A NEW PLAYGROUND

There are new toys in the test rooms. Aerial Faith Plates can project items or Chell with 50,000 foot- pounds of brute force across a room. Thermal Discouragement Beams can be redirected through special reflection cubes to take out gun turrets, and tractor beams transport you to otherwise unreachable locations. Prepare to learn some new skills.

11. IT'S A BIT ARTY

A new gameplay element is coloured substances with physic changing properties, Splashing the orange 'paint' on any surface will work like uber- grease, speeding up anything that runs or slides across it, whereas the blue- toned liquid turns anything it touches to rubber. Floors become trampolines and covered Weighed Storage Cubes become glass- smashing bouncy balls of death.

12. E3 WILL BE A HUGE SUCCESS

GLaDOS did a Kayne West during Gabe Newell's acceptance speech at GDC, interrupting her creator's acceptance speech monitor with a fake blue screen of death. Decrypting the code on the screen, revealed the message "UNTIL EEE" Look for Portal 2 to make a big splash at E3, with a release date announced.

13. THE CAKE IS A LIE. SERIOUSLY.

While the hate/hate relationship of GLaDOS and Chell continues and there'll be a few audio nods to the Still Alive theme, its unlikely that any such fattening rewards will appear. Valve's seemingly unwilling to re- tread a joke that burnt itself out long ago.

From what I've heard, it's brilliant. The world is absolutely massive, the missions are really varied (which is a real surprise, since compared to the original...), the general mechanics are great... but on the downside, the world is absolutely massive. And it has no qualms about spacing missions really far away!

so InstantAction.com (http://www.instantaction.com/) is back and in a big way!

they're now offering a service that allows you to play any of their games anywhere you could embed a video. right now the only game they have up and running is the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, but eventually they'll have their previous catalogue of awesome free games as well as a slew of new games (like Braid). these games offer free demos for a limited time and then you can pay to own the full version, all done within the confines of whatever website you're on that's hosting the embedded player.

for a demo of this new technique, Kotaku's posted a blog and included a copy of the game in that post. http://kotaku.com/5528245/you-can-play-the-secret-of-monkey-island-inside-this-post

this should prove to be an EXTREMELY effective method by which people can sell indie games. one that's even more convenient than Steam. InstantAction has even cooperated with facebook so any game they host on their site can be played as simply as an app on facebook, allowing even the unlearned masses access to great games.

The first trailer for the upcoming Call of Duty game: Black Ops, which has a planned release date of November 9th.

In it, you can see the AUG HBAR, which is from Modern Warfare 2 and looks unchanged, one noticable thing though is that it is shorter, so it must be the AUG assault rifle...

Call of Duty 7 - long rumoured to be set in Vietnam - will feature the custom killstreaks introduced in Modern Warfare 2.

That's according to the eagle-eyed super-fans at CoD Vietnam News, who've dug through Treyarch's recent forum comments with a fine comb to compile a list of things we know about the next Call of Duty (which admittedly isn't much).

Apparently, the developer's 'Treyarch dev Vahn' (real name David Vonderhaar - Multiplayer Design Director for the upcoming CoD game) has strongly suggested the firm will ditch a lot of the imbalances of MW2 multiplayer, including the Commando perk and the controversial nuke killstreak.

Previous rumours suggested the game will be called 'Black Ops' and feature SAS missions in Iran, according to an 'Activision insider'.

Here's what they came up with:

* While they've tried having custom killstreaks for each class, that seemed to complicate the 'purity and speed' of Create a Class.
* Consequently, it's fair to assume that customizable killstreaks are all but confirmed.
* At this stage in development, killstreaks stack and carry over if you die, but do not contribute to further killstreaks (hence eliminating the 'camping for killstreaks' problem of Modern Warfare 2).
* Treyarch are not fans of Commando, the extended melee range perk in Modern Warfare 2, and it is unlikely to return.
* They've tried a 'manned' version of the Sentry Gun killstreak, but weren't fans.
* We may well see a return to pistols as the only available sidearm, or perhaps a choice between pistols and launchers. Vahn and many of the team are not fans of shotguns and machine pistols as secondary weapons - it gives a player 'too much firepower'.
* The knife may well become a secondary weapon - although Vahn didn't want to say too much.
* Finally, don't expect the nuke to return as a killstreak. Vahn says they are not fans of a game-ending killstreak
Oh hey wait that doesn't sound terrible. That doesn't sound terrible at all!

Oh my goooooood.
Oh..
Oh god...

That... was a HORRIBLE movie!

The acting was fairly good for an amateur movie, the effects were too, but... the script just COMPLETELY ruins it all!
(Wall of text incoming! Yeah, I really went overboard with this)

1: No sense of subtlety. At all! You never get the impression that Wiley turned rotten, he just SUDDENLY EVIL. You wouldn't be able to tell that Megaman wanted to be human if he didn't outright say "I want to be human"! You instantly know who the MYSTERY MAN is, but the movie will still act like it's a major revelation... about half an hour later!

2: The characters are completely lacking in personality or development! That normally wouldn't be a bad thing... except literally half of the movie is about focusing on the characters and their lives, and it just ends up feeling like filler! Also, everyone is ridiculously melodramatic; and it gets especially bad when they start going on about how it might not be a good idea to try save everyone in the city because Rock might die in the process! The only one to get ANY amount of characterisation or development at all is Wiley, at the VERY end, where he does a "I'm so sorry" thing. Yes, even when you KNOW that he's completely lying about it all, it STILL feels like more characterisation then anyone else in the movie!

3: The actual combat is rubbish! I don't mean the effects, they were good, or the directing/acting, I mean that there's absolutely no sense of tension whatsoever! Megaman is portrayed as near-completely untouchable, the robot masters go down in at most two hits, and... they hardly ever fight, they just have an affinity for standing there and getting pulverised! Guts Man was utterly ridiculous, because after cornering Megaman and pretty much being able to finish him in one hit... he just stands there as Megaman tries out several different attacks on him! And when they do attack, the attacks are pretty much entirely useless. Apparently not only is he completely fireproof, but even Cut Man's claws just... bounce off of him! Not kidding! And in the few cases where he DOES get actually injured? It's without an actual battle, as the attacks are apparently SUPER EFFECTIVE and he doesn't get to fight. Oh yeah, and in those cases, it's so that he can be rescued by a guy that is literally invincible!

4: There's no deviation from the norm here whatsoever. The entire plot is PRECISELY the same as the infamously-rubbish game's one, except for three things: 1) the inclusion of the MYSTERY MAN, who is completely unsuited for the story because he's portrayed as far more powerful than Megaman... but doesn't do squat! 2) the whole Roll kidnapping thing. Which... doesn't go anywhere because the only reason she was captured was to encourage Megaman to try fight him. Yeah. Apparently stopping him from destroying a major city and everyone in it wasn't considered enough of a motive. Oh, except for at the end of that whole thing, where Rock has to choose between his life and hers. He decides to surrender his life (yes, apparently Roll's life is more important than everyone in the city! Goddam this plot was stupid!), at which point Dr Wiley throws Roll outside and... lets Megaman go. Not. Kidding.

5: IT'S STUPID ON A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT OF LEVELS!

Plasma, if you believe that the special effects and acting were good even for an amature movie then you have no idea what the word good means.

And it wasn't so much a case the script being a poor adaptation of the plot of Megaman, it's more a case of trying to adapt an action-oriented videogame about robots with zero plot on a five figure budget is a terrible idea in the first place.

Nothing in the film made much sencse at all. How did Megaman hold his own against all six Robot masters simultaneously, but strugle when he fought them indavidually? Why were all the robots (that didn't look like they belonged in PS1 era cutscenes) asian?

Most importantly, if Dr Light decided not to develop weapons for the military why were there so many incredibly destructive weapons lyng around his wharehouse? And why did he already have two battle suit upgrades ready for his housecleaning surrogate children robots?

Willy was pretty great, his stupid accent, shape shifting moustache and pantomime acting put him head and shoulders above anything else in the film. 'Mine's better than yours' almost made the 90 minutes I wasted watching this godawful film worthwhile. Almost.

i can't wait for the directors next film: GHOSTBUSTERS GENERATION (http://www.eddielebron.com/filmography/ghostbusters/)

10 maps released afterwards cost $30. You have to admit this is a blatant ripoff, specially when four of those maps are reused from a previous game...

The last COD game charged 800 points for three maps, so 1200 points for five is hardly unprecidented. People have been paying this much for years, this is just the first time they've released so many maps at once.

It's great that those other games had free offical map packs and map editors, but frankly I'm not playing those games. I'm playing MW2 online and the 1st Map pack greatly enhanced my enjoyment of a game I've already played for 50 hours.

If thats true then that is awesome. I've played through all 3 and loved them all, although Rayman 1 remains my personal favourite, and one of my favourite 2D platformers.

Rayman constantly gets remaked, also for DSi now as far as I know. I bought Rayman Advance and DS immidiately although I already played both for PC

Yeah but those are just ports of Rayman 1 with no changes, i'm talking about a brand new Rayman based on Rayman 1. It would be awesome, and i'm sure so many people would buy it too.

Well, hopefully Rayman truly does return soon, its been far too long now.

Considering humour I actually think Raving Rabbids were best but some of you may not approve it as an actual Rayman game, do you?

Raving Rabbids 1 was ok, Rabbids 2 was ok, didn't bother getting 3 because I was fed up of them sticking to Rabbids all the time, and then i'm not getting Rabbids Go Home for the same reason as before, and also because it looks crap. Has anyone played/got it?

New Vanquish trailer

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2010-vanquish/100954

We've got approximately eight hours to stop that from happening. We will stop that from happening!

Best out-of-context dialog in existence. I can seriously watch that opening line 50 times and it will never stop being hilarious. If someone doesn't make a Youtube Poop that uses this I might have to do it myself.

Wonderfully silly dialog aside, though, I cannot wait for this thing. The number of awesome moments in this trailer alone is a good sign, though to be honest it's mostly because Mikami is behind it that I'm so excited. The guy knows how to make a good game, and I'm honestly running out of people I can trust to bring something good to the table. Free Radical was gobbled up by Crytek, Nintendo has been consistently disappointing me lately, etc. Sigh.

Good lord, there's a third Rabbids game? Are they going to do anything with the Rayman universe that actually involves... well... Rayman? Also, I just want to say that I seem to be one of the six people who actually liked Hoodlum Havoc as much as the first two 3D games. The combo system was unique and interesting, dang it.

I'm one of those six people too. Hoodlum Havoc was good fun. Though I seem to have a tendency to like sequels that are generally ragged on (Earthworm Jim 3D, 3D Lemmings, et cetera).

However the last one no longer has the Rayman name or any references to it (kinda ironic since it's the first one being made by the Rayman designer :p), so it's fair to say it's grown into its own cash cow.

Hoodlum Havoc was good, but I feel it lacked something. The voice synching was always a bit off too. Great music though, I loved it.

The powerup system was quite good, albeit it solved most of the puzzles for you. If they'd had a cracked wall instead of the same old same old wooden doors, even, it could have been livened up a bit. Some of the secrets were pretty cool, like a room containing models of all the pirates from Rayman 2.

When you enter the Hoodlum Headquarters Foundry (you can't miss it, the announcer says it when you get into the area - it's also the part where the FLOOR IS LAVA) you get to a section where you must jump from left to right and back again up a series of platforms which are moving down. It's required to progress, so it's not hidden away. Instead of jumping off when you get to the ledge, keep fighting upwards and jump to the right off of the top. If you've got good eyesight, you'll see a square hole in the rounded machine in the background. You simply helicopter into there and there it is!

Most (if not all) FPSs give you the option to invert vertical aim. Personally I use invert for a mouse and normal for a dualshock, though inverse seems more logical to me in any situation

In actuality, Super Mario Galaxy 2 was... not all that amazing for me. It feels an awful lot just like the original (especially since it's an expansion-esque game. That's not intrinsically a bad thing, but it doesn't mean it's amazing). Yes, the levels are more creative and more fun in general, but... not by a massive amount. And in its aim to avoid so much level re-using like the other 3D Super Mario games, it loses a good bit of the charm in the levels. Even levels in the same galaxy don't feel like they're set in the same place.
I don't really like the New Super Mario Bros-esque form of level progression (you advance to the next galaxy by getting one star on the previous, until you reach an "X stars required" route block), because when you're not at one of those route blocks, you don't have as much a feeling of progression from doing older galaxies.
Also, I miss having a proper character like Rosalina. The Big Luma is just far too generic, motiveless, and doesn't feel like it has any sort of presence in the game.

So yeah, while SMG2 has better gameplay, it lost a lot of thecharm the original had. Overall, I'd really pitch it as precisely on par with SMG1.

Although in actuality, that's probably a good thing. One of the things I really really hate about sequels is that they nearly always make the older games seem horribly outdated and unvaried, to the point where you can't really have much fun playing them.

None of these complaints seem very justified here tbh Plasma. You're saying the game shouldn't be seen as amazing because it is similar to the original (a game that is amazing). Which might have something to do with it being, you know... a sequel? I mean honestly what were you expecting here?

You are also complaining that the level design is too varied and well that's just plain silly. The level design is outstanding. No other platformer has even come close to such a level of variety.

And as for Big Luma, do you really play Mario games for character development?

One of the things I really really hate about sequels is that they nearly always make the older games seem horribly outdated and unvaried, to the point where you can't really have much fun playing them.
That might have something to do with the fact that sequels are generally speaking, better than the original and as such going back to the original will seem pale in comparison.

It's not that, it's that when you're not at those route blocks you don't get a full sense of that you're advancing in the game when you go back and do old galaxies. In the First, you could go back and do, say, a load of Prankster Comets at once, and you'd still be gradually unlocking levels. In the Second, the only way you can unlock levels up until blocks is by playing specific levels, and doing anything else feels like you're just spinning your wheels for a while. You don't get that sense of that you can play any of the levels in any order, which was one of the great things about 3D Mario games (minus Super Mario Sunshine).
Plus, if you do do the levels straight as they appear, it results in galaxies being unlocked in groups, rather than the gradual process of SMG1.

I assume he's talking about the fact that each level is based on a WORLD and that WORLDS in general don't normally completely change layout every time you encounter the world. That would be like our moon changing flavor every time NASA takes a soil sample or does a moon landing D:

Super Mario 64, Sunshine and maybe Mario Galaxy 1 keep a reasonable amount of level layout consistency across levels within a world which helps make a world be believable.

I've never played Mario Galaxy 2 so no clue how varied levels within a world can be.

These.

Viewtiful Joe is much more interesting then it might appear. In order to get a good combo going (and to get a good rating), you need to manage your time powers properly. Going into zoomed-in slow-mo allows the most powerful attack in the game, but it eats up your power like nobody's business, and you need to stay in slow-mo (which still eats power, but at a slower rate) as long as possible to keep your combo going. You can dodge enemies' attacks to get them dizzy, which lets you launch them into other enemies, which lets you set up for even bigger things. Many games use time powers as a gimmick that adds no depth to the mechanics, but here the time powers are intertwined with the scoring system, and the scoring system is set up to give you points for playing the game properly. It's good stuff.

And on the higher difficulties, the game is just brutal. Enemy attacks are no longer telegraphed with the red skull icon, so you have to actually look at how the enemy is moving or listen to their voice to know whether to dodge up or down (two different ways to dodge, notice). On the highest difficulty you have to know how to dodge every attack that comes at you if you want to live, and god help you if you get surrounded while unable to use slow-mo, because you're practically dead at that point.

That trailer isn't a very good example of the game because it focuses on the flashy stuff and the clips look like they're being played on the lowest difficulty. The flashy stuff is pretty awesome, mind, but if you want to see a proper video, here's a decent fight against the hardest boss on the hardest difficulty:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY6krB2NkNo

Also, it has FANTASTIC music. The OST is the first, and I believe only, thing I bothered importing from Japan and it was well worth it.

Scott Pilgrim footage

This honestly brings back bad memories. I played Castle Crashers with a full 4 players at my college's video game party event thing a while ago, and while it was quite fun, after hours and hours of running around smacking the same enemies (reskinned, but otherwise identical) with the same weapons using the same combos, it just got... dull. The only thing pushing us forward after a while was to see what environment or boss the game would throw at us next, not because the game was actually fun to play. My group pretty much trailed off one-by-one once we beat the ice king or whatever because it was just a chore at that point.

Now, as a little experiment, I'm going to go to YouTube and write down the total playtime of some Let's Plays of beat-em/shoot-em-ups. Note that this isn't especially scientific, since I'm not going to bother watching the videos and also note that these times are all approximations.

Captain Commando: 35 minutes
X-Men Arcade (6 players): 36 minutes
Metal Slug 2: 49 minutes
Final Fight 3: 70 minutes
TMNT: Turtles in Time: 78 minutes
Final Fight 2: 82 minutes
Alien Hominid: 118 minutes
Castle Crashers: 274 minutes

274 MINUTES. Seriously. That's over four frickin' hours. No wonder it got tiring, jeez. It doesn't look like some exhaustive lets play, either. It looks like they were just playing it straight. Note that there was another Let's Play that was only 121 minutes, but it was with only one player, and I'm guessing the game throws fewer enemies at one player than four, which would make the game quite a bit shorter. But even that one's two hours long, which is still too long for most beat-em-up to last, let alone FOUR! Captain Commando, one of the most well-regarded beat-em-ups ever? 35 minutes.

Look, I don't think every game needs to have insanely deep mechanics. Beat-em-ups are fun in part because they're so wonderfully simple, which is what makes playing co-op with a good friend so much fun. I liked Castle Crashers, but then it just went on for so long that it just became tedious. If they trimmed the game in half it would've been perfect, but no one has the guts to make a short game anymore.

Everyone makes games about three times longer than they should be nowadays, since they have this obsession with telling an epic story or making jokes and pop culture references, and if the game were the proper length they wouldn't be able to fit all of that stuff in. Maybe the Scott Pilgrim game will be different, and maybe the developers will make it last as long as it is entertaining and no more. I hope so, since it does look like it'd be decently fun for an hour or so, and if that's as long as it lasts, it'll be quite good.

The nerd culture stuff is a big turnoff for me, though, and I don't especially like Paul Robertson's work, so... yeah. Ho hum.

Honestly, though, I feel like I can't judge the Scott Pilgrim game based on that awful video. That thing is waaaayyy longer than it needed to be (seriously, do we need to see the exact same Guitar Hero scene twice? I know you're just making a montage of all the footage you picked up, but come on, do some damn editing, people.)

Aannnd without even trying, I've written an essay. What is wrong with me.

Ubisoft just announced Innergy. What is Innergy you ask? Remember last year when Nintendo announced the Vitality sensor? Same thing. Exact. Same. Thing. Except it connects and works with any computer apparently, maybe other consoles too, and it helps you reach "cardiac coherence". The segment they showed is you breathing in an out to the rythm of a weird thingie on the screen.

O_o

Apparently, playing that game for 15 minutes a day boosts your inmune system.

edit: Ghost Recon Future Soldier looks awesome.

That said, so does Asassins Creed Brotherhood, shown earlier today.
Shaun White Skateboarding was also shown, and it's.... strange.

edit2: Project dust. Game by Eric Chahi. Looks pretty interesting. It's a digital download game.

Rayman is back! 2D sidescroller it seems, with 2d art. Rayman Origins. Looks fun, and really really stupid, but in the good way. He gets a large bird sidekick thing. They both do stupid things togheter.

edit3: They announce maniaplanet, by the creators of trackmania. User generated racers, fps's and rpg's.

Kinect still looks like crapit's an extremely neat interface for a TV. I imagine that before too long this sort of tech will show up in some TVs and/or DVD/BluRay players.

too bad the 360 is a gaming device.

T
Aannnd without even trying, I've written an essay. What is wrong with me.
The thing is a deep, brutally difficult fighting system with time-manipulation doesn't exactly lend itself to a fun pick up and play multiplayer experience.

'I wish this game was more like this completely different sort of game' it's not a very good comparason.

The Castle Crasher's comparason is much more apt, but it's not really fair to Judge Scott pilgrim based on another game's issues.

but either way, they're blind. they're GOING to miss out on video games. it's kind of a requirement of their condition.

Hate to moan about yet ANOTHER thing here (although in fairness, now that I've played it a lot more, SMG2 is a lot more awesome than I thought), but
God
360 engineers
Ugh
How can you not make a console that suffers from some MASSIVE hardware failure?!
http://video.destructoid.com/#165121
How can you even think that is acceptable?

I'm hoping that it's actually a development issue they still need to fix. Emphasis on hoping.

In completely unrelated matters, NINTENDO'S E3 PRESENTATION IS GLORIOUS!
SO
MANY
GAMES I WANT!
RELEASING
THIS YEAR!

I have apparently resorted to one word lines today.

Well it sorta is, when the trailer for Scott Pilgrim gives the impression it's suffering the same issues.

(I'm sure someone is going to say "you shouldn't judge a game by the trailer" here and miss the point)
