get a ps2 if you want backwards support, they aren't that dear.
Well it's just possible that he might not have room for both machines.
Or that shelling out on both machines would defeat the object of the price drop.
Or maybe he already has a PS2 and was planning to put it in the loft when he got a PS3 but apparently this isn't an option.
Or I dunno, some other reason I haven't thought of.
“I (would) lose money on every PlayStation I make – how’s that for logic.”Well I dunno, isn't that the traditional model for consoles, that you lose money on the console and get it back on the games? And everyone was shocked when Nintendo produced the Wii and it could actually make a profit on the console itself?
Or am I missing something here?

Or maybe he already has a BC PS3 and is just sharing his opinion on the subject? :p
edit: Another thing that should be noted is that the PS3 slim no longer has the option to install another OS. Which is a shame really.
Well I dunno, isn't that the traditional model for consoles, that you lose money on the console and get it back on the games?
I think he meant that adding the hardware necessary for backwards compatibility would result in a net loss. Unlike, say, the Wii, the console can't run older games without the need of additional hardware, and the majority of people interested in the PS3 would tend to already own a PS2 and Sony wouldn't get any extra game sales from them.

Everything Plasma says comes out of his ass. Even in the odd case it is correct.
Elaborate? Or is this just plasmassumption also known as buttchat
Well its not wrong to assume that a large portion of a console's sales are through brand loyalty, the PS2 was by far the most common console of the last generation, and the people who owned an Xbox or Gamecube didn't really have an incentive to get a PS3 over the respective sequels, considering the PS3s very slow start-up at getting good games.

Possibly because of fanboyism too.

conclusion: shut up
Possibly because of fanboyism too.
Fanboyism? Why would any bias towards a console have an effect on how many PS3 owners I think have a PS2?
Edit: Wait, I think I was a bit unclear. When I said 'extra game sales', I'm talking about PS2 games, that a backwards compatibility wouldn't mean PS2 owners would buy more of them. Not that PS2 owners wouldn't buy PS3 games.

That reminds me my PSP fell off the shelf a couple of days ago and I've yet to check on it's condition...
I took my PSP on holiday with me last week.
Whilst playing a mixture of Rayman and Crash Team Racing in steady succession, my PSP froze for no apparent reason and refused to turn itself off. I removed the battery and the damn thing did the same thing again 2 times in a row within about 2 minutes of me turning it back on. It then APSLODED creating a bizarre whirring sound and now the only thing that seems to work is the green light that indicates it is on.
Conclusion: F*** you Sony.

Arkham Asylum seems pretty cool tho.
I also tried the demo for Shadow Complex (360) and it's really cool. There's even a glitch in the demo that allows you to play the full game, albeit without being able to save so you would have to complete it in a single run, and you also get no achievements. There's still autosaving so if you die you don't really have to start over, but if you exit the game you can't go back to where you were. :p

After 8 years the Policenauts translation project has been completed.
Policenauts is an Point and click adventure game from Hideo Kojima of Metal Gear fame. It never made it to the west mostly due to poor sales of it's spiritual predecesor Snatcher (wich only saw release on the ill-fated Sega Mega-CD)
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3070/2493100971d41de98086.jpg
The game is best described as an interactive buddy-cop movie with a hard sci-fi setting. It includes an incredible amount of detail, with background information on everything from the main character to the crumpled up beer can on his desk in the opening.
If you wanna play you'll need to the disc images (iso) of the original japanese PSX version of the game. Witch is a shame because those discs are rare and there's definitely not an easy method to aquire these images (or even a pre-patched version) over the internet that I'm most likely not allowed to mention here.
The patch comes with documentation detailing the process of aplying the patch to the disc images, and other such information like the recomended emulator and plugins required to play.

Just 3 months to go for 2 great new games.... both which could be game of the year :D
Time Gentlemen, Please! is now on Steam, and you also get the game Ben There, Dan That if you buy it too (which isn't really a deal seeing as that game is free anyway).
I'd played Ben There, Dan That before (download it free here (http://www.zombie-cow.com/?page_id=17) if you want to try it out) and thought it was great and really funny, so when TGP turned up on Steam I bought it in a heart beat, and for only 3 quid, I would have been crazy not too.
Excuse me, gonna go play funny point-and-click adventure games with lots of wanking jokes.

I watched a trailer and it showed a beach level from the game- it seems to be like Sonic Rush, the homing onto enemies and speed dash are in.
Graphics look neat too, so I'm positive this'll be good. But I would rather it be an XBLA release if it's going to be of short length.
And I know for sure, it'll be on PS3 and X360, hence the word HD.
Another thing I'd like to add- while searching for the trailer on YouTube I found what appears to be a trailer for a 2D DS version of Sonic Unleashed, search for it and if you can't find it I'll post a link tommorow.

Both, I think. Given we've got Speed Highway in Adventure and... well, any number of stages in Adventure 2 :p
The loops in Sonic adventure are the silliest because they occur on an actual motorway.
For some reason, although I'm sure you'll disagree, I personally think the worst one(s) are the perfectly round, perfectly smooth ones fashioned out of volcanic rock at the start of the volcano level in Sonic 2006.
The loops in Sonic adventure are the silliest because they occur on an actual motorway.
I wouldn't call the non-functional floating platforms in the middle of nowhere to be a motorway...
Of course, the silliest thing of all is that the entire level is apparently all housed in a single building! Or, probably not, but that's the impression I kept getting every time I went in the entrance! I'm sure someone could explain what happens between entering a small building in the middle of a low-level city and appearing on some giant motorway thing in the middle of the night with the odd occasion of skyscrapers.
Man, the whole story stuff in Sonic Adventure was real nonsense!

IIRC, one end is City Hall (the "At Dawn" section that Knuckles plays, and that's at the end of Sonic's run) and the other end is that office block you need an ID card for as Sonic (and that Tails gets in through the big hole the Doc makes).
Granted this isn't much of an improvement, but at least it's not all inside one building :p

Here's a Gamestop related question for you americans: Can you pre-order games at the store, or is pre-ordering only available online? Like, can you approach the counter and place a reservation for a game(and get any applicable pre-order bonuses)? Do you have to pick up the game on release date, or can you pick it up a few days later? Do you need anything special, id or something? Do you have to pay full price when you order or is that until you pick up the game?
All this is vital information and if you refuse to comply then you will be TERMINATED. All of you.
Akuryou13

you can preorder in the store and pick it up on release day. for the rewards, be sure to ask specifically because you won't always be given them otherwise. the game is reserved for you for a set amount of time before they'll sell it to anyone else, so you can pick it up a few days later if you like. either way you'll get a call telling you about said preorder being available whenever that happens. you can pay any amount you wish above $5 and up to the full price of the game. you'll not need your ID, but you will usually need to provide basic info such as a name and phone number for obvious reasons.

Sorry for all the questioning, but this guy is rather picky about where he goes and doesn't like when I have him go somewhere not certain there will be a result. :p the phone number is just so they can contact you. given how close laredo is to the border, I'm sure you could give them a number in mexico. probably be better if you call to check, though. if not, just give them a random cell number or something. don't know if you can specifically ask to hold it a couple days when you preorder as I've never asked myself nor was I asked for the short time I worked there. I'm almost certain you'll be fine to let it sit for 2 days, though. at worst, just call them tuesday and tell them to hold it for you for a couple days. I guess, but that wouldn't make it worth buying a PS3 for. To take a different example, I can appreciate that Left 4 Dead is a fun game with clever use of teamwork and dynamic AI, but I won't buy it because I don't like survival horror (Plants Vs. Zombies gets an exception by playing it all for laughs).
Realism in games has become a bit redundant for me now, to be honest, in the same way that realism in painting became a bit redundant with the invention of the photograph. I prefer to see games that go for stylised graphics, like TF2, Psychonauts or most 2D games.
As for plot, I'd rather read a book or watch a film. Books and films aren't conditional on having the necessary skill to reach the next chapter.

That's why passing a page gives you no sense of achievement unless you're reading the bible or something equally painful to cope with.
... why do I need to have a sense of achievement? It's a book. If it isn't entertaining and/or thought-provoking in its own right, and you need to come up with the idea that you're achieving something in order to enjoy it, then there's not much point in reading it.

So you can compare videogames to books but I can't? You're saying you'd rather read a book or see a movie for some plot based fun, I'm saying a plot based games has more than that.
Either way, if "realism" in graphics is redundant to you at this point you're either ahead of your time or you haven't really seen Uncharted moving on a HD monitor. You cannot say TF2 is stylyzed and games like Fallout 3, Bioschok or Uncharted aren't because they have what you would call "realistic" graphics, as in, not cel shaded cartoon style, or super deformed style. The artist leads aren't just looking at the real world and saying, "yo, model this building".
I understand your opinion though, but I think your reasoning is a bit rich.

FPSs are all for the gameplay and fun, but I'll never put a FPS in the same place of trully spic games with epic backgrounds, such as SotC, Uncharted, MGS and others. SUre there are Bioshock Fallout and etc but this have some great differencial. They're not just "war games"
In the same way you can't really put a sport game side by side with the epics, I think you can't put FPS war games too. Also, as time goes by, a better and more awesome FPS willcome out, with more awesome realistic explosions all around you, and destructible scenario where you can shoot and destroy a pencil ying on a table, and then the older FPS will be almost completely forgoten
Artistic games,as I call, are one of a kind and I don't think the common FPS games gets to this level

While anyone can see them as good even if isn't their cup of tea, GOTY is a too generic title, and I agree with Paul that games are too varied for such simple judgement. Stuff like Best X Game is a better fit.

Artistic games,as I call, are one of a kind and I don't think the common FPS games gets to this levelI disagree with this simply on the grounds of CoD4. I would completely agree with you in terms of every other FPS game that's ever been made. they're all about having fun and enjoying the experience in new and exciting ways. I enjoy them, but not for their depth or their ability to tell a story. Modern Warfare is the only exception to this, though. I rank CoD4 ABOVE Shadows of the Colossus in terms of story telling. obviously this is only my opinion, but the fact of the matter is, CoD4 tells a reasonably mundane story in an extraordinarily interesting way. The characters are extremely well presented, the pacing is absolutely astounding and the overall presentation absolutely kills 90% of all other games out there. crawling out of that burning helicopter, for instance, just to black out a few times in the process gave me chills. that's not something I've ever experienced in another FPS and something I rarely experience in ANY genre.

I still need toplay CoD4. Even whit everyone talking so much, I couldn't get enough interest to go for it
And SotC really doesn't tell a story, since pretty much everything is unknow to the player, but still, it's a game that after you play you can only think that it is a work of art. It goes further than only entertaining to the point you say "Wow! I totally blew up that base and the explosion was huuuuge! So awesome!!"
But yeah, I'll play CoD4 (wich I don't doubt to be a very incredible game) and see if my vision about this games will change

See, that's the problem right there. I bet for a fair number of people (well, for me anyway) the game they had most fun playing wasn't an AAA title.
I mean, over the last year (September to September) I'd say my favourite new releases have been Wario Land: The Shake Dimension, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (well, there's no accounting for taste :p), Plants vs. Zombies and Braid (a little cheeky because the 360 version came out in August 08, but the PC version was this year). They'd be my nominations, simply because I did have the most fun playing them.
e: whoops, forgot Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
That's only a problem of criteria. What criteria are we using? I'd like to think that regardless of how much you can giggle while playing a game you are capable of ranking overall quality of a product.

From what I've heard of it, it's great as a sandbox, but rubbish as a game; that all the puzzles are too easily solved with some variant of the same solution (apparently, most puzzles can be solved with a Pegasus and Rope), and any creative solutions are utterly useless in score terms.

I'll give a better opinion further into the game, but so far it's pretty neat. nothing close to game of the year, but it's still a fairly good puzzle game.

I can see what you're saying. Games should entertain. The game that has entertained me most (by a mile) is Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars. However I wouldn't call it game of the year: a good multiplayer experience aside it lacks pretty much everything you would expect from a 'good' game (except shiny graphics). I've had fun with it but I can see it clearly lacks the quality of many other titles...

I imagine you can solve anything easily with extreme items like the black hole and wings, but if they tried to restrict that, they'd be breaking the whole openness of "solve it however you want", and you'd end up with a boring old puzzle game either way (much like Red Faction trying to restrict the powerful terraforming tools in singleplayer and ticking everyone off). I guess it's like any other sandbox game, it's up to the player to be creative.
Still the most prominent issue from what I've read are the controls, they lack the precision required to actually pull off any tricky puzzles without the physics getting the best of you.

Still the most prominent issue from what I've read are the controls, they lack the precision required to actually pull off any tricky puzzles without the physics getting the best of you.GOD the controls are horrendous! you tap the screen to move. you also tap the screen to interact with the world. and to select an item. and to MOVE said item.
ropes dangle somewhat realistically and they're tiny. when you summon one you're almost guaranteed to launch yourself off a cliff at least once because you either missed by a pixel or two when you tapped the screen, or because the rope moved out of the way as you tapped.
why they couldn't just use the D-pad for movement I will never understand...

Yeah it's possible to solve a lot of puzzles with the same few items, but nothing stops you from coming up with creative ways of solving things. As SupSuper says, it would have been worse if they had arbitrarily restricted things to avoid this. Also, to truly complete a puzzle you are challenged to do it three times in a row without being able to repeat any item, but then again, there are other words that do almost the same as the pegasus and rope so... :p

Yes because a 250 Gig hardrive is just as ridiculous as night vision goggles.
It's not like they're recently launched a digital distribution service for games previously only availiable on 8 Gig discs. Nor have they upped the size limit on arcade titles to 2 Gig.
And I can't imagine that anyone would wanrt to download HD films and TV shows or use the consoles other multi-media functions at all.

You stole my reply. Oh, well.
I have a 120GB elite, and I'm already short on space. Very short considering I'm eyeing a couple of the games-on-demand...
Anyway, I got Halo 3 recently(traded Wolverine for it) but annoyingly, since it was the localized version, it's dubbed in spanish. I was expecting to be able to change the voice to english (I was under the impression the standard on games was offer localized language + original, at least when dealing with american games released in latin america) but alas, I can't. Should have checked that beforehand, considering I had the same problem when I got Halo 2. :p :(
Oh well, gonna trade it for COD4 and then get the american version.

Willing to trade two legs for early copy of game. Rarely used, and in v. good condition.
Also, I want Uncharted 2. I'm willing to trade my arms for that. (minus the hands. I intend to sew those back onto my shoulders so i can still play games.)
With Natal, I won't need hands to play videogames, so I'll be able to trade them off.

The info so far is it's gonna be a Wii platformer with funky mechanics, about the struggle by Disney's lower caste of characters to dethrone Mickey Mouse, set in a steampunk Disney World. More info here. (http://kotaku.com/5374850/epic-mickey-revealed-warren-spector-speaks)

Will it be 3d or 2d? If it's 2d then I don't see why it would look much worse. Hell, even if it's 3d, with the right art direction it can still look fantastic on the wii.

I dunno. twilight princess was a GC game and everything there was pretty as hell. so long as the game is made specifically for the wii, there's nothing stopping it from looking good. it's the ports that give the wii a bad rep.
Yeah, it's amazing what good artists can do for a underpowered gaming console. The Metroid Prime series, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess (which was aimed at Gamecube audience like you said) are good Wii examples of that, heck most of the games Nintendo helps create end up looking awesome.
so when did Disney stop being protective about their franchise?

This is a completely different thing. This is the long forgotten disney characters seeking Mickey for revenge. Revenge. Disney has done a complete 360 turn if this ever gets released, and we'll have to see how they cleverly go through with the content rating, because this is the **** that happens in nightmares.

That was the exact reason I didn't believe it when the news and concept arts first came around. Disney was pretty much the very last company I expected to try make any series 'darker and edgier' to appeal to the young adult demographic. And why I'm still sceptical that it is actually going to be like that, and not a "Scrapheap Challenge with special guest, Oswald The Rabbit".

heck, mickey could be possessed by one of the bad guys of the disney universe or something and all his friends are trying to use the power of love to set him free. unless something's stated otherwise, there's a lot of wiggle room even with the darker look they're putting in previews.

Judging from the GameInformer cover you'll be playing as Mickey, it's on the wii because there's some kind of on-the-fly painting mechanic involved.
It sounds pretty cool, can't wait to see some in-game stuff.
It's hard to believe, but considering that almost every Disney movie was based on old child's tales that were pretty obscure and insane, and that there already are some more dark stuff from Disney around there, it gets easier to accept
The thing is that this one involves Mickey, and Mickey is like a messiah for them
I hope they don't **** this up, cause the idea is good and can be used wisely

Yeah, pretty much. You think that being a disney game, involving painting, it'd do the best on the Wii... but when it's a multi-platform game, the end result is always the same: it's going to look horrible because it doesn't try using the Wii's speciality in effects, and it's going to play horrible because it's going to use the WiiMote as a toss-in gimmick!
Or else it's going to be the other way around, and it's focused on being on the Wii primarily. In which case, it's going to utterly suck on every other platform! Case in point: Rayman Raving Rabbids!
Yeah the Wii is too different from the other current consoles. It probably will be focused on the Wii though as that was the initial plan.

And here I was thinking that the PS3 used OpenGL.
DirectX is a Microsoft product - they wouldn't readily give it away to their rivals for use in their consoles, now would they?
maybe, would explain why OpenGL has been lacking innovation for a while now (it is copying Direct X in terms of functionality)

the laser pointer feature. the way the wiimote is registered it can be used as a pointing device. the PS3 version registers the controller in the opposite way, so it won't be as effective for use as a pointing device, I would imagine.
Exactly, the Wiimote tracks it's orientation via IR and the Sony Wand is tracked by a camera.
If the Wand does have a pointing device it'll have to use the motion sensors in tandem with the camera as AFAIK the camera only tracks the orb on the end. I can't imagne that being half as acurate, not to mention the device is clearly not designed to be held and pointed at the screen in such a manner.
But this is beside the point as the pointer is fairly limited without a nunchuck equivalent for analogue movement. According to wikipedia there's plans for a swordfighting game that uses the wand as the sword and a Dual shock 3 as the shield and I can't begin to imagine how awkward that would be to play.
MtlAngelus

It seems accurate enough. There is a gameplay video of RE:5 being played with the wand, and it looks pretty good.
I do agree that the lack of a nunchuck device is stupid, having to hold a dualshock on one hand and the wand on the other seems dumb, but I still have hope that they will fix that.

and this one isn't quite the same as the rest. it changes time periods, which changes the gameplay. mostly, though, it's just the way they tell the story. the gameplay is a bit better than the little bit of other call of duty I've played, but the discrepancy is mostly just due to time, I think. the story, though, is presented in all sorts of interesting ways, and the use of graphics really just tie it together (when your commander pops out of the grass right in front of you in the gilly suit, for instance. or the A-10 bombing run). the whole mood of the game hits the nail on the head, and the overall story-line does as well. it's just an exceptionally well-crafted game from top to bottom.
and then the multiplayer is awesome as well. similarly well-designed.
