Then what about just calling to have a casual chat? Or invite her over, or something?
In my case, my excuse for not calling would be the fact that I don't have a phone. :p (It was either the phone or the cable internet access.)
I can't. I'm too damn scared to death. And I think it would be extremely awkward for her to.
1) Scared of what, exactly? Think about it.
2) The only reason it could be awkward for her is if she likes you too, in which case, no matter how awkward, she still would like you to call her.
If you don't call her, I will. I have no idea how yet, but I'm sure I can gather enough info to find out.

The fact I've only talked maybe 5 sentences in all to her could be a good reason not to.

Okay then, don't invite her over. That still doesn't excuse you from a friendly chat. :p

A guy had a crush on my sister randomly called her and tried to go out with her. My sister said it was awkward. I think it would be safe to take advice from a normal teenage girl. I think that's a good excuse.

Seriously, just forget about the whole ask-her-out aspect for a while. :p At least try to find out if you have any common interests, to begin with.

Yeah I'm with K^2 and Munkee on this.
The worst that could happen is she says no, and you move on.
The best case scenario beats the hell out of the worst case scenario in this one.
If you never ask her you'll never know what could have happened, and that tought will always be in your mind. Always. Hunting you in your dreams. For all your life.
My mom always says "Excuses are like @$$holes: Everybody has one, and they all stink."
Munkee's advice is very sound. Slow down and just talk to her.

I think that's the way I want to go first, but I'll wait until I can speak to her in person. Being called by someone who never talks to you is quite strange and makes most people I know feel very uncomfortable.

I still need to buy it. I loved the demo.

Ok. So maybe it will be awkward for both of you. So what? You still got to do it. Otherwise, you'll never know.
I am speaking from the personal experience. I wanted to ask out a girl from one of my classes at Uni. Untill then, I briefly spoke to her ONCE, but she made a good impression on me, so I descided to ask her out. I looked up her phone number and called her. She wasn't home. So I walked up to her in class the next day, told her that I wanted to ask her out, and even mentioned my attempt to call her. Her responce: "No one calls me on my home number. Here is my cell number." We went out a few times. No telling where this would end up if she didn't have to go to Europe for a semester. She just recently got back, so I'll give you the rest of the story when there is something to tell.

8 exams down and 1 to go... whoever planned the days of the exams should be shot. I had 1 exam on the 17th may, i have one on the 20th of june. Then I had 7 on 6th, 7th and 8th of june. So over the past 3 days I've had over 7 hours of exams. They all went quite well though, so I can't really complain, I suppose.

I've got 16 exams in this exam period - I've done 5 and have 11 to go.
This week, I have a total of 4 hours, 45mins of exams (5 exams) spread over 5 days.
Next week, I have 7 hours of exams, spread over two days, with half a day's break in the middle :p
I also know people who have had 6 or 7 exams in one day, totalling around 6 hours in one go.

Today I am one step closer to geting a comic published.
Being a cheap so and so I made my sister a card instead of buying one for ther birthday. The result was a flmsy piece of folded paper with a reasonablym good picture that I drew of my cat characters. Colour shading and allsorts. My sister took it back to canterbury, where she studies history at Canterbury Christchurch Uni. One of her friends saw the picture and was impressed. Now this friend hapens to be involved with a small student-run magazine that's sold in a few shops around canterbury, during term-time. This magazine is in need of a newspaper-style comic, and they've been looking around for a comic artist for a while.
I'm going to send them some comics and if the wind's right I could have me a monthly published cartoon in a student magzine.
It's not much, but it's a start. :D

Nice! Good luck, I'm sure people will enjoy them.
Just got my C2 exam left. Most of my exams have been easier then expected. I was expecting to get about 60% on M1, mainly due to the fact that my school has no decent physics teacher and so I didn't learn anything at GCSE. And, even though M1 is a maths module, it's basically physics. But it went alright and I actually managed to do all the questions. I found the C1 paper in January easier than I expected (the practice papers I did were harder). I just hope they don't make the C2 paper hard to compensate.

Core maths  Do a real maths a-level ;) I'm sure Alex will agree with me that Core maths is a lot easier than pure maths (the old syllabus)
For example, what you do in C1 - C4, we did in three exams - P1 - P3. So you have less to do in each exam, as they've taken three units and spread them over four.
You also have to do less applied units - where's the fun in that?? Applied is what makes maths fun :D
P3, M3 and P4/FP1 - those are real exams (and I'm sure alex will add P5/FP2 and P6/FP3 to that list ;) )
I'm still not even halfway through my exams - 7 down, 9 left. Two electronics exams next week (on the same day), then two days later, two physics exams and a Decision maths (D1) exam. Then the following week, some real maths: P2 and M2. And concluding in the final week with Physics 6 and P4/FP1.
Sorry about the rant on Core maths - I, everyone in my class and our maths teacher disagree with what Edexcel have done, making the maths A-level easier...
And before anyone says anything, yes I did take S1 instead of M3 for A-level maths to make it easier to get a higher mark in Maths :D M3, D1 and FP1 go towards an AS in Further maths

Good luck with C1. We changed from the Pure syllabus to the Core syllabus (we did pure last year) - it meant we had to sit C1, C2 etc., but it means I can skip some of the harder Mechanics modules and still get my qualification. :D
So I'd been doing the C1 and C2 stuff for over a year by the time I sat it. 100% on C1 baby :D
My first exam is on the 16th. D:

It is easier, but that's why we changed. I'm not complaining, I get to do all the Vector and Matrix stuff anyway, and that's all I really care about (that and getting a good grade), so woo.

I got 99% on C1. I want to know where I dropped that damned mark:mad:
I agree that C1 and C2 should be harder, way too many people are going to get A's, although I can't say I'm comlaining that they made it easier. I remember for my GCSEs in maths though that they had to lower the grade boundaries or something, so they gave me 300/300 for the June paper. Either that or they marked it very badly - I'm sure I messed up one of the questions. C1 is basically GCSE + differentiation + integration and that's it. C2 has logs, circles, definite integration, radians, binomial theorem. I found M1 very hard though, I couldn't get my head around the planes and the slopes, the reaction forces and friction, that was until about 3 days before the exam when it suddenly clicked. It's amazing how much more you learn when a teacher isn't around to stop you learning:rolleyes:.
Anywho, I'm definetly going to drop English, I wish I'd done it sooner (or rather not taken it at all).

Err, the paper's out of 75, not 100 - they scale it up to 100 marks in some way that you'll never know. Your teacher will have your actual mark out of 75.
That also proves what I said about Core being easier than pure.
C1 is basically GCSE + differentiation + integration and that's it.
And a 5-year old could probably do that integration.
While we're at it, here's a nice easy P3/C4 integration: (Alex will be able to do this in his sleep ;) ): Integrate, with respect to x: x e^(2x)
C2 has logs, circles, definite integration, radians, binomial theorem.
I'm sure circles came in at P3... Mind you, they were easy.
I found M1 very hard though, I couldn't get my head around the planes and the slopes, the reaction forces and friction, that was until about 3 days before the exam when it suddenly clicked.
Mechanics is a lot easier if you do physics as well, as M1 and M2 are basically the first unit of Edexcel's AS physics course. M3 is fun though :D That's physics with integration :D
Anywho, I'm definetly going to drop English, I wish I'd done it sooner (or rather not taken it at all).
Great minds think alike :D Although I'm beginning to wish I'd stuck with English (which I really enjoyed) and dropped electronics...

I went and bought San Andreas for the PC and found out that it's 2000-or-XP-only. So I... acquired XP, and made a 15-gig partition to install it on. And it works. (XP, that is, not San Andreas. I'll probably be giving that a shot this weekend.) It just freezes for no reason about 30-40% of the time when it's at the initial loading screen, and it has a tendency to restart randomly if I use Firefox, but aside from that it's pretty stable. Now I can also finally play the Half-Life 2 demo (did not like 98SE for whatever the reason), and I'm working on the Lego Star Wars demo right now.
I admit it. XP is pretty nifty.

Hey, sure, mind lending me a new graphics card, processor, and about 256 MB RAM?
And, this random freeze-up while loading bug is starting to annoy me. It generally doesn't happen too often except first thing in the morning -- then it tends to freeze 4-6 times in a row before it'll let me on. Still seems to be completely random.

I think I've actually decided what I want to do in life. Before about April I didn't have a clue about what I wanted to do as a job. I felt the only job I'd be happy doing was doing nothing and any career books I had were completely useless and no jobs seemed to suit me whatsoever. In April I decided that studying Genetics would be something I'd like to do, and since that it's become even more something that I want to do. Everything which could never fit into place before, and which I never believed would fit into place has. Plus I'm pretty certain on applying to many universities and I have favourites already (although I haven't been to them all). So far I've been to Birmingham, Nottingham and Leeds (Leeds being my favourite) and I'm going to Leicester, York, Sheffield and Cardiff. Personally I think I'd like to go to Leeds or York. Then I'll probably end up studying for a PhD and then becoming a genetic engineer.

Wow, that's pretty ambitious. Best of luck in your future endeavors. I'm sure you'll make it if you try hard. :)

I went to York University on Monday. It's a really nice university. There are geese and ducks walking all over the campus, (some) of the accomodation is very nice, with quite a large kitchen area with glass windows overlooking the grass in the middle with the geese and ducks walking across. There's a lake right next to that accomodation with a bridge leading to the biology department (very new, and the old bit has been refurbished). York also encouraged students to take a year in industry, where I'd be working in my 3rd year in a company, being paid a salary, whereas Leeds left it to the students, which I don't like as much because I'd rather be with the friends I have made in my final year (or some of them anyway) if I did take the year in industry. I also went to Leicester last Wednesday but it was a horrid place with terrible accomodation, and there's no way I'm even going to apply there. I think I'll end up applying to York, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield and (perhaps) Cardiff.
Most are asking for BBB (some are asking ABB), which shouldn't be too difficult as I feel my AS exams went very well, even the English exam...

Get a 550W Antec. I assume by the lack of a manufacturer that it's a no-name brand. No-name brand power supplys SUCK. As in they are God-awful. I've got a 550W no-name somewhere, and it actually only puts out about 360W of power because they suck. But an Antec, the price difference is worth it.

Yeah, my sister's bf suggested the same, he's a computer wiz like you. Was going to buy a 600W no-name power supply for $67.00 but being careful and want to be as smart as you and him, decided to take both of your advices and go with a 550W Antec. I got a new computer today :D
An Apple PowerBook G4 1.5GHz with 1Gb RAM.
I almost had to post this in Negative Events, due to a breakdown of communication at the Apple Store in Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent. Last night I reserved the computer, hoping to reserve the additional 512Mb chip of RAM. However, they won't install it unless you pay for the computer there and then, which I didn't want to do.
When we went to pick up the computer this morning, we dutifully paid for the computer, the extra RAM and claimed the 8% student discount (even though I only have a conditional offer for university - Apple will accept this). We were told to come back in half an hour, by which time the RAM would be installed. We collected the computer later and went home.
When i booted it up and registered it, I discovered that it only had the standard 512Mb of RAM, not the 1Gb I was expecting. Furious, I phoned up the Apple Store and tried to come to some sort of agreement - we didn't fancy another 100+ mile round trip to Bluewater, negociating the Dartford Crossing on the M25....
Eventually, the manager phoned back and said that one of the technicians would come to my house within a couple of hours to install the RAM.
And, one hour and 40 minutes later, Nick called at the door with some more RAM and explained that he grabbed the wrong PB off the shelf when he installed the RAM in the shop.
Anyway, I've now got a great laptop (OSX Tiger is wonderful, and therefore Windows Vista will be ;) ), one gigabyte of RAM (fully expandable to 2Gb) and a courtesy 10% discount off my next Apple store purchase - let me see: two 30" displays and a G5 with 8Gb of RAM: total £10K, therefore a £1k discount :D

Not sure if this is the best place, it's more like a "could go either way" event or occurence. But aside from 100%OT, we don't really have one of those.
Anyway: I seem to be cursed with the dubious ability to only fancy women who are already in love with other men (Okay, so obviously I'm not alone. Just seems an odd lucky streak). Until recently, and even then you could argue that I'm just slightly jammy.
So, to get to the point: there's a girl/woman (Bah. Girl sounds patronising, woman makes her sound like she's a lot older than me. Of course, I don't wish to imply either :o. Young woman?) in my Astrophys class who, well, she's (insert string of positive adjectives here: as you may imagine, translating feelings into words is tricky there). Well, a few weeks back I overheard in casual conversation at coffee break that she had a boyfriend. Bah. My luck again.
Then a few days ago, I overheard, again at coffee break, that she'd split up with him. This presents the following interesting problems, before we even get round to potential reciprocation:
1. Did I mishear her? I kinda tuned in halfway through the line of dialogue, so it's possible she was talking about someone she knew rather than her. Obviously it would be a bad idea to ask her out or anything if that was the case.
2. Have they made up in the interim? Could be it was overblown. Again, see above.
3a. Is it too early? I would hate to feel I was interrupting any period of "mourning" she was undergoing. That and maybe we should get to know each other better first. But equally...
3b. Is it too late? Could be I'm wrong about that. What if someone else gets in there first? Of course, the longer I leave it, the greater the chance of that happening, but I have no way of knowing the specific parameters in this case.
As you may have gathered, I mean well but I'm not the most romantic of people. Well, I'm certainly not a smooth talker, my writing ability aside. And the sceptic in me gets irritated enough at the concept of universal, infallible deities without bringing up the subject of personal, fallible ones. So yeah.
The above aside, one idea I had just now is to ask her out to the fireworks display at Midsummer Common. But I'm worried that might be a "too early". Although again, she may already have her own plans to go there with her friends, so that would be a "too late", if a minor one. It's also free (donations aside), so it's not like it's a massive treat. Going somewhere afterwards might be feasible, but my knowledge of good places to go in Cambridge is fairly limited. Also, again, I want to strike the right balance. Bah, if only Guy Fawke's Night came a couple of weeks later. Maybe I am getting ahead of myself here.

Ask her if she has any plans for Saturday. If she has none, ask her if she'd like to go to the fireworks display with you. Go with a group of friends too, if you think it's "too soon". If it goes well there, then yeah, take her out somewhere afterwards.
AndrewTaylor
3 Nov 2005, 00:36
Do something. Doesn't matter what. There's no way to know what the best thing to do is, so this is about damage limitation: if you do something and it doesn't work out, you'll feel a lot better about it than if you do nothing and it doesn't work out. Trust me, I've done nothing before, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

"Progress" Report:
I discovered in conversation that she was busy on Saturday, so eventually I decided to cut to the chase and ask her out in a general sense.
She thanked me for asking, but said that she couldn't. The actual problem is kind of a synthesis of problems 2 and 3a: she confirmed that she had split up with her boyfriend, but that there were complications, and that they might even get back together (With no further evidence either way, I will assign this event the probationary probability of 0.5). So basically I asked her that when these complications were resolved, whether she could inform me of their resolution either way.
So yeah. Some unspecified time in the future, one of the two E&O threads will have a post from me in it. Obviously I hope it's this one.
(Fake "double post edit" in the copy-post-delete style as I'm not sure that hack's working yet)
After a bit of thought, I'm not sure I should be so laissez-faire about this. Any suggestions? Should I do some recon into her hopefully ex-boyfriend (eg who is he, what's his college and subject, what made them split up) so I have a clearer idea of the situation and the likelihood of them getting back together? And how would I do that without looking silly? A less daft thing would simply be to find out more about her, I guess. It's ironic, but it seems that whenever she's in conversation with people about stuff, Kieran's trying to monopolise me with a talk about anime . For the record, she's called Sarah, her college is New Hall, she works as a waitress at Henry's of Monday and Tuesday evenings and she's a member of the Cambridge Air Squadron. That's the most I've been able to gather to date.
Well, anyway. I'm going to issue a second e-mail invite to my Astrophys class about Random Sports. Last weekend they were all busy with supervision work (We did have three supervisions in four days), but this weekend they should be more free. Hopefully Sarah'll be able to come, because apart from anything else, it's always nice to see her.

Okay, we have good news, bad news, and good news:
Good news: Sarah reckons that a reconciliation with her old boyfriend is highly unlikely. She also accepted the box of chocolates I gave her gleefully enough.
Bad news: She said the line that every female seems to think is completely painless and every male knows is like a lead weight landing on the heart, "I think it's best if we just stay friends". Apparantly (of course) it's not me, it's her - she says she doesn't know what she wants right now. And all the usual clichés.
Good news: I have noticed astonishing similarities between this and my friend Jack's current relationship. That started off much like this one (in some ways, it still is like it). So if I play my cards right, and keep the pressure small but steady, I may be able to turn this to my advantage. And I'm following some of his advice: for example, I basically said to her that if ever she needs a friend, I live in the next college across and she's got my number, which went down well. As did the compliment on her hair.
So yeah, every day is now pretty much "Try to do a good deed for Sarah" day. Today was easy: she wasn't in lectures, so I procured extra copies of the notes (and photocopied my own handwritten notes for Statistical Physics, which we don't get pre-prepared notes for) and left them in her pigeonhole at New Hall with a little note telling her who sent them (Somewhat less romantic than chocolates, but as I say, small but steady...)

Her family is awesome! Her little brother was teaching me how to play bass guitar. (And she didn't hide that she found it cute that I was learning an instrument from her little brother)
I felt more at home in her house than in the houses of any of my other friends.
Being the last one to leave, I got a good 20 minutes to talk to her alone afterwards, before getting a hug before leaving.
*happy sigh*
It's been almost a year since I first developed feelings for her, and things have been progressing slowly. But I couldn't have wished it to be any other way. Today was a very good day indeed.

I just need to say that I had been starting to lose hope, and was worrying about how things were going, but posting on here has given me new hope, so thank you!
Zeor, you'll find someone for you, don't worry. And you'll find her when you aren't looking for her. I wasn't looking for Katie. And yet, at the same time, it's as if I've found what I've been looking for for my entire life... (that sounds cliche... oh well)
OSC, I wish you the best with, well, you haven't told us her name yet, have you?
Zeor, you'll find someone for you, don't worry. And you'll find her when you aren't looking for her.Yeah, I know. Sooner or later, I'm sure it'll happen. In the meantime, it honestly does cheer me up a little to know that my friends are doing better than I did/am.

Well I asked her to the dance and she said yes. It was quite hard to do. It's the farthest step I have ever taken to a girl I like. I was horribly nervous and I felt a 1 in tall and it worked. I was going to do it yesterday but I didn't get a chance and today I barely had one because as Harry Potter said it, girls travel in packs. But I did and it worked out great. :D

I've spotted a dog in Doogans(Pet store) today at the mall which I like. Her name is Sugar, and she is a Golden Retriever. I've got the money to buy her and give her a home (my home to be exact) and I truly do want to buy her. I need a companion and just someone to keep me company, not having a girlfriend for eght years does make me lonely. I'm going to try to convince my mom that I want a dog. Thing is Ill need to pick up care products, toys, sports items and the like, which will cost bit more. My Nintendogs came taught me how to be more of a proper animal trainer, so I should be okay to take care of her.

I'm finally suceeding on the last Yellow Comet mission on Advance Wars 2! Max is pumping out neo tanks, Eagle's pumping out fighters and bombers and Sensei's pumping out copters. Most of the cannons have been taken out and I'm definitely in advantage.
Only problem is, due to the stupid way the map is designed, the path to the Black Hole factory is very narrow. Basically, all my units and his are in a huge traffic jam since there's only space for 2 at a time to "meet up", and I think the front units can't attack each other, and nobody's gonna back out because that'd just put them in disadvantage

Yeah, I reached like turn 40 or something. Eventually I pushed him back with units he couldn't attack (becausr the computer is too stupid to switch them with units that COULD attack them). Then the first Black Hole mission was extremely easy, specially due to the odd map design. He has no bases or infantry, I do, so just blew up the pipes and let his units come outside cannon range to die :p
Now I'm on the final mission, and THAT looks tough.

Rumours of my banishment have been mildly exaggerated.
Well, put it this way: this morning my dad asked me "Did I ban you from the Internet a few days ago or something?"
So I'm back (although obviously to avoid experiences like this in future I shall have to use t'Internet in more moderate quantities)

Yeah, it's a tricky one, especially with Hawke getting all those free units from his factory. I actually prefer Andy as the Orange Star CO for that one as unlike Max he has competent indirects.
That mission would be so much easier if Blue Moon could play in either the OS position or the YC position. Grit would have a field day...
How are you taking out the seam? From underneath with YC (which is how I usually do it) or straight through with OS?
EDIT: Whoops. Where's that double post hack when you need it?

Anyways, I didn't finish with any of the ways you mentioned. I pushed back and jammed BH's units so that they couldn't move and attack; eg. putting Bombers in front of Copters (it's funny how they can block each other if they can't attack each other. Like putting Transports in front of APCs :p). Then I took some GE Bombers over and around the factory, and attacked the seam from above.
Though now I'm stuck on the last last mission. With the turn limit it's pretty hard.

Though now I'm stuck on the last last mission. With the turn limit it's pretty hard.Aye, it is a toughie. I think the general strategy is to use Colin, Eagle and Max and get a bomber each out early doors. Then use Eagle and Max's bombers as decoys so than Colin can get past the Black Cannons unscathed. Given Sturm's unpredictability it's risky, but doable.
Final Front HC is much easier, oddly enough. Those Black Cannons facing the wrong way give you a lot more room for manoeuvre.

Decided to wear my Adidas Hoodie instead. Won't get into lots of details, but I've had a good, fun night :)
Kept making them laugh, which I found shocking and surprising.
Felt bad for one of them since they felt down, they were not good at bowling and this kept them from having fun, so Ev-Man (Everett's alter ego) made her laugh then I resorted back to my normal weird self.
Although the time together with them was short, did enjoy their company, seeing as I've not seen them for a while. It felt like a Friday night cause am used to doing stuff with them Friday nights.
Unfortunately no pictures were taken, which is a shame cause bowling was fun.
Then on the way home we thought we were in trouble.
Sirens were behind the car and us three were in a panic, one girl suggested we pull over but it was snowbank, so the driver sped though the lanes and we were racing though but it was an ambulance who turned right to the road. Was good fun going fast, though.
That's about it.
I'll be getting the magazine today

We had one of those as a rental once in Florida - I suppose it'd be great for you, but for a family (I was about 12/13 at the time), it was a little "small", even by British standards.
Just make sure the previous owners weren't someone like Dollar Car Rental, or any of the other car rental company - especially with Dodge's or Chryslers (both the same company, essentially) - cars get a real thrashing when the rentals (speaking from experience ;))

The really spacious interior of my Celebrity is one of the things I like most about it, though...Just make sure the previous owners weren't someone like Dollar Car Rental, or any of the other car rental company...Pretty far from it. The guy selling it got it for his daughter so she could get back and forth from college. The thing's apparently been kept in a garage all the time and maintained really nicely. Needs a new belt of some sort and the tires are a little bit worn, but that's about it.

On my way up to the mall today, I noticed what appeared to be the shredded remnants of a shirt, hanging from a tree branch several feet above my head. Maybe 20 yards ahead of that were the barely-recognizable remnants of a pair of underpants, hanging from another tree and branch just a couple feet above my head. The waistband was the only thing that survived, along with a small bit of the cloth. Between the two, lying on the sidewalk, was a used condom.
I can't help but think that the three items must be related somehow.

You're right; it should have been Citroen. Or maybe a Subaru. It's not always easy to think of the right make, though. Sometimes it is... anything that ends in an A is a Nissan or Vauxhall. Anything that ends in O is a Kia. English words are Hondas or Fords, foreign words are Fords or Renaults. Made up words are Fiats. Nothing is a Peugeot, which is lucky because it's hard to spell. To continue being silly, small numbers are old Renaults (It's a fair point: why don't we call the Renault Five the Renault Cinq?), medium-sized numbers are Peugeots or Volvos, and large numbers are probably Saabs or Rovers.
Italian words could be just about anything really. Lambougini, Ferrarri...
EDIT: Saying all this, it's possible that Citroën was founded in the Alsace and Lorraine regions while they were under German control, and then they passed to France as "reparations". Of course, I've no idea.

You have Rover between old Renaults and Peugeots.
And you don't have the Renault Cinq because the Cinq is the hardcore car nerd name for a souped up Fiat Cinquecento (mare up word, see). You snap half the badge off and it gets a better name (and a slight weight reduction).

Naturally someone has stolen the badge off the bonnet...
Curiously, my car is badged as a Plymouth Neon. Plymouth and Dodge are pretty much the same thing from what I gather, but I know for a fact that most of the Neons I've seen have been badged as Dodges.
So, maybe I'm at least a little distinctive, considering there are about 400 billion of the things on the roads. :p
