Paintball for wussies?
Laser tag and paintballing are different kinds of games. Laser tag is played mostly in an indoor arena in mostly close quarters and involves electronic scoring, tagging, deactivation, power-ups, etc. Paintball is usually played outdoors over greater distance.
Quasar regulars in the UK play Supercharge. This limits you to one shot per second, so you must make every shot count. Normally in Quasar if you are hit, you get the chance to shoot back once for one second after, called a Reflex Shot. If, however, you have already taken a shot less than a second before being hit yourself, you will not get one, so you must be careful. If you hit someone five times without being hit yourself, you will become charged, your gun will say "A-a-a-active," and your gun will shoot three times instead of once when you press the trigger. You will then be able to shoot the enemy base and destroy it for a points bonus for your team.

Wouldn't it be awesome if someone recreated famous online multiplayer game maps for paintball matches?
These come to my mind immediately:
de_dust
2forts
Facing Worlds
Although, the last one could be quite dangerous if you actually add a deep abyss.

Blood Gulch would be perfect, then. There's hardly any place you could fall from and get really hurt. Well there's that sniper spot you can only get to with a banshee, but there are no banshees and/or flying vehicles in paintball. :P
But yeah, de_dust and de_dust2 would be instant hits.
bahahaha. what sort of ping do you get when connecting to, say, london or new york
A bit under 40ms to the UK and around 120ms to New York according to Speedtest.net, though it's very obvious the current mood of the servers hosting the service effects the outcome more than my connection does. These are, without too much investigation, the good numbers. It can get a lot worse and indeed in practice most online games give me a ping of around 50ms on British servers and around 30ms on mainland ones. That was on the previous laptop and before my connection speed was upgraded, but neither of those should make much difference to ping times, I think.

Yup, exactly. It's the only Unreal Tournament I played extensively. Morpheus pretty much cured any fear of heights I might have had back then.
It and an Urban Terror map called Ramelle that had a huge tower on one end that you could climb, then jump down from a window at the top, aim for a courtyard fountain and survive with some luck. That made me throw up in my mouth a little at first, but through mindless repetition, I bested it. I wonder if I can find any pictures of Ramelle... oh and Docks, that one would have been amazing if built for real, but I guess a little dangerous with the high buildings. Awesome layout, though.

I'd imagine a human body would float on lava and you'll burn. Burning takes a while.
My point was, there isn't much lava in Q3DM7, whereas there's ample oppurtunity to fall off the map in Q3DM17.
I'd imagine a human body would float on lava
Yup.
Lava densities (http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/1999-11/943417499.Es.r.html): 2.1 to 2.6 g/cm^3, depending on the rock composition.
Human density (http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/bio99/bio99503.htm): slightly above or below 1 g/cm^3, depending how fat/muscular you are.

About time I had a decent e-wang :p
Looks like I have a good chance of getting a new internship placement at a company here in Stockholm. They make kids games, but atleast I'd get to work with real 3D and make textures. The place I work at now don't make very visually interesting games. We make webbrowser mmo games, like this (http://www.fastandfuriousfig.com/PublicPages/News.aspx) game. I'm not into that type of games, their goal as a company is "we want to be like bigpoint.com". Inspiring!
There are many reasons why I don't like being there, primarily is the financial part. We do not get paid for internship work, and live of student loans. As of now I have to ride the subway 30 minutes, and then take a train to Upsala which takes 40 minutes. It's expensive as hell that last train is. 500kr (£40) for 10 tickets to be loaded onto my ticket-card. The subway card lasts half a year though and is relatively cheap for students.
Another big reason is that I'm not learning anything there. The internship is 7 months long, 30 consecutive weeks. In previous classes it's been split into two periods, but the companies have requested one long period instead. Which is great if your not stuck at some dead end place like I am :p
So what's the point of working at a place where I have to pay to be able to work there and I'm not learning anything?
I've never quit a job before, so I'm not looking forward to it. They seem to think I love it there . The catch is that I'm the only person they got who knows how to do stuff in 3D, so they are very dependent on me for content. They'll probably get very sad and hate me. Eh-hehehehe.

It is... That's a massive amount of time that could have been spent doing something useful. And not like regular time that could have been spent doing something useful, which is mostly a lie -- you can't actually do useful things during every idle minute. We're not computers and can't run a low-priority background task. But that, that was voluntary work these lunatics did to create an entirely pointless thing. And not like regular work to create entirely pointless things -- that I'm in favour of. That's what art is. No, this is a cold, clinical pointless thing with no artistic value. What possible motivation did they have for doing that? Why did they not, instead of doing that, do volunteer work for a local charity and meet people and expand their horizons and make the world a better place? What possible reason did they have to instead waste their time creating an entire encyclopædia in a dead language? Who did they think would benefit from that?

well sure, but I assumed, given the wording, that it was something more than just "I'm an assistant manager now and have a tomtom". obviously I could easily be reading too much into the comment, but the wording simply sounded more significant than just that.

The question is, how will the TomTom find its way to my door? Does it have a TomTom of its own or has it some clever method of pressing its own buttons or synthesizing a voice using text-to-speech and triggering its voice commands?

Well, I say "I". By that I mean I got home one day and my computer case was unbolted and a third hard disk had magically popped up in my computer. According to my dad, "it was on discount". Also now my DVD drive doesn't work because there's not enough power cables. Sometimes I feel like I live in a sitcom.
Anyways, positive things. Erm, I now have 1TB of disk space. It's... not as awesome as it sounded a few years ago. Much more fun to mention though.
Recently I had to reinstall Windows (after I had killed my previous installation by trying to patch some DLLs to make Vista skins work on XP :p) and noticed that several programs suddenly didn't want to install and aborted with MD5 or CRC errors.
One of them was Battlefield 2 and I thought that my disk had been scratched too much.
I decided to download an ISO via Bittorrent, then another one and then a third one.
All three were corrupted and failed to install.
In the end, I found out that one of my RAM modules was faulty and delivered errors in Memtest86.
I went to the shop and exchanged them and now I have another 4 months of warranty.
Positive. Yay!

Yeah 1 TB isn't awesome at all but I'd still strangle a man to death in cold blood for it:p

Right, this is weird but potentially great... I'll make it as simple to write read as possible.
We had a Pipex phone line and internet connection. In order to qualify for the internet connection we had to have a Pipex phone line (or at least, before Pipex bought out Bulldog we had to have a Bulldog phone line).
A few weeks ago we phoned BT and asked to switch back to them. They said that would be fine and they'd handle the takeover so we could just sit back and relax. All good.
Yesterday our line was switched. I phoned up O2 to get broadband off them (awesome deal, by the way, especially if you're an O2 customer) and they confirmed that the line was now a BT line. I went ahead with the order but it will take 6-10 days to become active.
Now, if a Pipex phone line is required for Pipex broadband and I'm on a BT phone line but still have the internet in the interim between now and having O2 broadband, that's a positive event, right?
BUT HOW CAN THIS BE? Am I now getting free internet? The guy at Pipex said nobody actually owns Bulldog broadband anymore, so could I be on unlicensed, free internet which is legal on account of a loophole? Should I consider cancelling my O2 broadband order and try to just leech internets from the ether? The flipside of this conundrum is that Bulldog/Pipex will probably still try to charge me (they charged me for 3 months of usage in a house we'd moved out of last time we moved, for example).
This post has confused me. Someone clear it all up for me and let me know something. Thanks.

I don't really know if it works this way over there, but companies have a tendency of charging the month in advance, so the last payment you made covers for the remaining of your current billing cycle, so even if your phone line is cancelled I think the service remains functional until your billing cycle ends thus why you can still use the internet.
It's just a guess tho, it may not be the case.

Sounds like the BT line you've been switched to already has broadband provided from O2 or another company. You might be able to figure out which one based on the IP address you are allocated. Perhaps whoever used to have that phone line will get the bill for what you're using now. :p Although, the company might be able to see that the internet is being switched to O2 and let O2 take care of it.

Apparently the first 14 days will be a bit up and down, speed-wise, while they make sure I'm getting as many internets per second as possible. Considering I have only had my router on for about an hour I'm quite pleased with the current speeds.

I'm yet to learn differential equations. From what I've heard they're scary.Well it depends a lot on the equation: differential equations run the gamut from "pretty trivial if you know basic calculus" to "WHAT", depending on how they're composed.
But for a quick, simple taster, consider this:
dy/dx = y
Basically this states "whatever the function y(x) is, its derivative is equal to itself". Now, what function has that property?
--- SPOILERS ---
e^x, of course (to be specific, e^x times an arbitrary constant, as the differential of A.e^x is still e^x).
How about dy/dx = k.y, where k is constant? Again, we're falling back on the exponential function: e^(k.x) differentiated gives us k.e^(k.x). So, adding the arbitrary constant gives us an answer of A.k.e^(k.x).
--- END SPOILERS ---
Alien King
21 May 2009, 22:43
It's all fine until trig functions get involved:
d^2y/dx^2 + dy/dx + 0.5y = e^x
y = e^-x . (A.cos(x) + B.sin(x)) + (2/5).e^x
Obvious. :p
Yes, the function e^x is important. All functions that are their own derivative are of the form A.e^x where A is any real number. e^x just happens to pass through the point (0,1).
I don't think I've ever actually been shown why e^ix = cos(x) + i.sin(x)... I've used the result a lot (it was needed for DE and was covered a bit in Further Pure 2), but I can't recall ever been shown where it came from.

UK University Degree grading goes as follows (percentages are for my uni, might be slightly different at others):
1st class degree = 70% or greater
2:1 (upper second class degree) = 60 - 69%
2:2 (second class degree) = 50 - 59%
3rd class degree = 40 - 49%

That was the simplified version :p
All grade boundaries can be moved by up to ±3% at the discretion of the programme board each year (they rarely go up but will sometimes drop if it was a bit of a bad year)
And, all percentages are rounded to the nearest whole percentage before giving you the grade, so a 1st is technically 69.5% and above.
Edit:
Following on from Andrew's post, at my uni the following system is in place:
You have to get 100 credits or more to pass the year. Each module is typically worth 10 credits and you sit 12 modules per year (6 in each semester). BUT if you get less than 30% in two modules and pass all the others (so still get 100 credits) you fail the year - you can "soft fail" up to 20 credits, so by getting between 30 and 40%. Credits are only awarded for 40% and above, and you only get credits in multiples of 10 (so 40% in a module yields the same number of credits as 100%)
Its taken me four years to understand all of that :p

Technically the same at my uni because they round everything up/down to an integer percentage, so you can still technically get a first with 69.5%, since that gets rounded up to 70%.
The Austrian system is even simpler:
5 = fail
4 = almost fail
3 = bad
2 = good
1 = no one is that good
That's for most uni and upper school teachers/professors.
I always understood it.
I think if you don't get enough credits you can get a plain 'pass' mark too, even if the modules you do pass average above 70%. That confused me for a while because it was never explained -- because basically it never happens.
I think that's what happened to me. I think they considered my final piece null and void. Apparently the 108 page hand-drawn storyboard I drew on paper with a pencil didn't count as actual work. Or something.
I'm so very, very bitter.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! My ping's been as low as 22ms before; I can't complain at 40ms considering I don't do anything which requires a low ping, really.

oooh. congrats!
This forum needs a "What are you speedtesting?" thread. :p
Passed my full driver's licence practical test. Even though it's booked for an hour, it only took me 40 minutes. It probably helped that I felt like the test was going to be harder than it actually is. I was a bit of a slow starter in the whole driving thing, most people take the full test when they're 17 or 18 here. My restricted licence would otherwise have expired next month, so I've saved myself from having to renew that.

Psh - amateurs. I passed my driving test the day before my provisionary license expired :p (on the seventh attempt).
What happens over there if your provisional licence expires? Here you can stay provisional forever, as long as you keep renewing it on or before the expiry date (approximately every 2.5 years I think).

You get a 5 year prison sentence, or pay a £10,000 fine and do 500 hours of community service.
Next stop, PhD!...So seriously, the hell am I doing hanging around all these smart guys?
Seriously though, big congrats. To you too, Bloopy! And... uh, masses of speed-testing dudes!

Your provisional license is valid until you're 70 here, but when you do a theory test (which you must do, and pass, before sitting your practical driving test), that is only valid for 2 years. So if you take more than 2 years to pass your driving test you have to resit the theory test.

It turns out I actually get about 11Mbps from a wired PC. My PC (which is connected via wifi) loses 1.5-2Mbps over the air.

Oh? I seem to recall mine expired when I reached something like 21.
The 2 years between theory and practical is correct though.

while you smart *******s are getting your PhD's lined up and your future millions counted out nice and clear, I got myself a car today. managed an '09 Chevy Cobalt 4-door for only $250 a month. definitely not a bad deal given that I got a 5-year 100,000 mile warranty for it as well and it's got all the nice features I don't need at all :p
I also found out my mom is a friggin shark when it comes to dealing with car salesmen. glad to have her along this morning :D
now I just need to settle the rest of my stuff for college and I can start on my not-PhD.

well you can buy a car on monthly payments. lease means that the dealership owns it and you're just paying money to borrow it from them for x number of years
We have our kitten. Pictures will be uploaded later tonight :D

My Outlook receives all my email from all my gmail/googlemail/etc accounts and all my RSS feeds. Forefox is DA BOM.

That's just sick. You should be using the Google Mail web-based interface for great justice.
But Outlook minimises to the system tray and I can ignore it unless I want to do stuff. Plus I like the Send To feature in the Windows context menu and I don't know of a way to set that up for Gmail.
I appreciate what you're saying but I am not of the opinion that everything should be done in a browser. Called me old fashioned if you like.
