I think the biggie is the way that Pratchett's books have smashed demographic barriers, and are read by people of all ages and backgrounds.

He already had an OBE, plus I imagine the £500,000 donation to an Alzheimer's charity (admittedly a slightly selfish one, given that he now has early-onset Alzheimer's) did no harm.

From this week onwards I only have 2 Maths lectures a week (+4 for Further Maths). This is most definitly positive as it means I can leave college nice and early on Tuesdays (last lecture ends at 12:10) and reasonably early on Fridays (2:10).

To make up for that though, I know have a 2 hour Maths lecture from 2:15 on Wednesdays, but we're only expected to stay there for little more than hour and just do Maths work of some kind.

My mouse (Logitech MX1000) broke a while ago and I just got round to contacting Logitech about it. They said that even though I don't have proof of purchase they will send me a replacement.

The really great part is that the MX1000 has been discontinued so they're sending me an upgrade (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/130&cl=gb,en).

Hopefully it's significantly better (and lasts longer than 6 months).

My advice to you is: buy Logitech products, their customer service is great.

Yeah, I know what you mean but it's not that far removed from the MX1000 (http://www.exe.com.tr/urunresimleri/Urunler/46146mx1000.jpg)'s shape. That was a very comfortable mouse; it felt as though you had no mouse in your hand, like you were moving the cursor with your mind.

Granted the Revolution looks a bit more edgey. We'll see. Fingers crossed (and hopefully not buckled by a new mouse).

Well, I don't have that model but my mouse essentially has the same shape except for the scroll button on the left, and the bit that pokes out.

The shape is made to fit a hand, rather than just making a ball of plastic (as mouses used to be) and hope it fits a hand.

I've got the MX Revolution sitting about 3 feet behind me. it is a ridiculously comfortable mouse. I bought it because the 518 was hurting my hands (too thin) and I needed a wider mouse to be comfortable. the Revolution was awesomely comfortable. the only complaint I had was I prefer wired mice so that I don't have to remember to charge anything. aside from that personal preference, the Revolution was everything I could ask for in a mouse.

Much better than the small, smooth ones, because you have much better grip.

There are cheaper, equivalent models available today, like the MX 1100.

Logitech mice don't have nickel between the copper and the gold on the charging contacts. Apply something acidic and wet (saliva) to the contacts. Over time this will seep through the gold and cause the copper to oxidise, rendering it useless.

Your mouse and its lithium-ion battery will be unchargable. Bingo!

Depends a bit on the individual, I think.

Alien King
2 Feb 2009, 19:31
I thought amylase required an alkaline environment to function, so saliva should be basic.
Although my saliva has turned litmus paper pink on occasion.

Vader
2 Feb 2009, 19:35
Whatever it is in saliva that causes the copper to go manky is why doing so will break your mouse's contacts. I used to do it because the mouse would be difficult to charge but the layer of saliva would act as a conduit and help the mouse charge. It turns out lots of people did this and their contacts all went manky, too.

It's your safest bet.

A friend of mine offered to set up another of my friends with a girl he knows. I was going to encourage him to say yes, because she's really nice, but I'm glad I didn't, because last night she kissed me and frankly I can't see any graceful way out of that situation. "Remember I said you should go on that date? Well, you can't and it's my fault." (I mean, obviously there's Step Aside, but really, no, I don't like him that much.) The whole thing is definitely Positive Events, but things might be about to get Complicated. I'm not sure how keen on her he was. (No, hang on. He doesn't know yet, so that should be 'is'. Oh, crap, you see what I have to contend with?) Hopefully he won't care at all and everything will be Fine. Because, you know, that's how things tend to work out, right?

I should write this stuff down and then turn it into an elaborate British farce sitcom.

Probable Quote from the Future: "No, sorry, Mr BBC Commissioner, I can't write a second series because all the funny things that have happened to me and aren't in the first series revolve around making a sitcom about the other things. Which might be okay in an Extras kind of a way, but think how complicated series three would be then."

Oh, my life is fun.

Another question, Andrew: Do you actually have feelings for her or are you taking advantage of hers for you, if that is, she has any. If you did before this event then it's not so bad, you just didn't mention them to this friend and it would be unfair on you to step aside when the match is good. Whether you think this situation is romantically unfair on your friend depends on what you want out of the relationship with her, what your motives and morals are.

So it turns out that this isn't as well-kept a secret as I thought. I mean, not that it was ever particularly a secret, I just didn't think anyone knew. But I went out last night and someone did. I'm constantly amazed at how fast people find stuff out. Turns out another friend had popped her head into the bar on her way past to say goodnight but decided instead to leave us to it. Might have been nice to let me know she was discussing it with my friends, but it's not like she was spying into my flat or something so fair play.

On the plus side, in the course of this conversation I found out that my other friend was never remotely interested in her, so that's all okay. In retrospect that's not surprising; it was always a bit of a random match anyway... honestly me and her are better suited.

So it's all good, at least, all that could reasonably be expected.

That's lousy reasoning. Even with the black bars I still get the full picture. The black bars couldn't be any more annoying than the edges of the monitor, so I see nothing negative on that, and the plus side is having more space on the monitor. I am confused by all this 32-bit and 64-bit OS stuff. It is stablished that 32-bit OS's can only use up to 4GB of RAM, but I read somewhere that it assigns a memory amount for each program running and will still use any available unused memory for other programs, so it is capable of using more than 4GB, only not with a single program.
Then again, I might have misread things, which is not uncommon.

When I search for games that don't work under 64bit vista, I keep running into the same phrase, "I hear there are allot of compatibility issues", but I can't find a source for these rumors. I just keep running into forum threads where people are reporting how well games are running.

The best I can find are two people who had 'problems' running Company of Heroes and Gothic 3. Is that the best you can do google? Surely this compatibility epidemic must be written about somewhere!?

As for me, the only game I can't get running on Vista is 'The Longest Journey', but that didn't work on 32bit vista either. It was some kind of directx problem.

..

Ok, it looks like people are having problems with Punkbuster on Vista 64 bit. That could explain some kicks I have gotten in BF2 when I was still playing that last year. I can see why this is a problem, but you know, Punkbuster isn't a game, so I will argue that it doesn't count :p

AndrewTaylor
8 Mar 2009, 20:59
I bet a lot of it is people getting a whole new computer, with new OS, new graphics card, new RAM, new CPU, new everything, then when it doesn't work, immediately blaming Vista64, just like the WWP forum is full of threads asking how to make it work on XP despite the answer being 'insert disc, run as normal; XP is a supported OS, you fool'.

Yeah I tried googling for compatibility lists before getting it but they all seemed over-worried. In the end I just got over it, installed 64-bit Vista and haven't had any major problems. (and Company of Heroes works fine)

64-bit Vista fully supports 32-bit software. The only problem is it can't run 32-bit device drivers, so games that rely on them (usually protections) might pop out some errors, but they're far and few by now. And it's another reason to stop with the overbearing kernel-level protections. :p (StarForce has killed a lot of games due to compatibility issues but most have been patched. A lot of protections don't bother though)

I only get like 5 mb/s :(

It's like being on dial-up, only slower.

This comment depresses me because A: we had dial-up for a long time and B: our broadband is still slower than that. :(

Indeed! Well done, Gar. I passed my test this week as well - 5 minors. Of course it's much easier to get a driving license in California than it is in the UK, so Gar is easily the better driver of the two of us.

For the benefit of us Brits, how does the US test differ to the UK one (I assume you also have a halfway decent knowledge of the British one, having spent quite a while here :p)?

Squirminator2k
20 Mar 2009, 21:17
Having never learnt to drive in the UK, I honestly couldn't compare the two. I took the US test three times and the only real advice I can give is this: Make sure you're visibly looking at the junctions/cross-streets as you drive past them. You need to at least pretend to be aware of them. I didn't do this the first two times I took the test, so I drew a little face on my left hand as a visual reminder.

Oh, and in parts of the US (including California) you can make a right turn on a red light provided you stop first and check for oncoming traffic (although in the UK this'd be a left turn for obvious reasons).

Even if they did work like in Super Mario it would still be really dangerous.
Assuming you eat them when already seated, suddenly growing to more than twice your size.. You would probably just crush yourself against the inside of the car.

Much like sitting inside a car while it transforms into a robot. Baaad idea.

The new Knight Rider series has an episode where K.I.T.T. turns into a pick-up truck. They jump in the back, he transforms back into a Mustang and they're in the front seats.

Awesome.
