iPod Announcement Five Years Ago
January 10th, 2007
Every now and then when new products are announced, I like to take a moment and go back to read the Mac Rumors forum thread from when the iPod was first announced.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=500
It only gets better the further you go. Arguments one after the next explaining why the iPod will be a collosal failure and clearly spells doom for Apple.
It’s just a cheerful reminder to be a bit more humble in making predictions and assertions, and one i will try to keep in mind more often (although, in the spirit of the above, I offer no guarantee).
Hilarious.

China's not strange like Japan is. China's strange because you could show someone a picture of it or give them some facts about it, and ask them to guess what year was being depicted/described and they might say anything from biblical times to 2025 depending on which bit of China you choose. That's ****ed up.

My only problem I have with the new Fanart rules is the 'only constructive critism' thing.
Where is the line between unconstructive critism and constructive critism drawn?
If I point out the weaknesses in someones drawing am I in the wrong if I don't state the obvious afterward?
Ie: "Your perspective is all wrong" versus "Your perspective is all wrong, you should learn to draw perspective better."
Also, I notice that it's only negative unconstructive critism that's not allowed.:-/

I hate it when people try to get philosophical about mathematics.
Old post to quote I know, but lately I've been getting philosophical about mathematics. Help me!
I've been thinking about the place of mathematics in existence. No matter where we go or what we imagine, there's this seemingly absolute truth called mathematics hanging around. It reminds me of the movie The Fog (2005) which I saw the other night. Is there any way to escape this mathematics thing or does it just mutate as required to accommodate whatever anomalies or paradoxes we can throw at it? Could a place exist where none of our mathematics can be applied, and if so, could we even imagine what such a place would be like? :D
I try to ignore the existence of math whenever possible.

If you point out a weakness that's constructive. If you say "that picture is bad" without reason then that's not. Constructive criticism is criticism that could be considered useful to the artist.
Good idea, making your new rules post so long, Tom. The idiots who frequent the forum won't bother to read all of it and will probably then go and do something stupid. Excellent trap.
Thank you for reading every part of the thread that people won't read and not reading the bit that everybody will read. :p (If that made sense...)
I used basically the same form that Andrew used when we re-did the rules a couple of years ago (to no effect). Short, 1-sentence rules at the top, then a more detailed description of them later on that people can read if they want more clarification. And if you can't be bothered to read the rules, then you should expect to get punished - same goes for in real life too.
There's a short version. If they don't read it, they deserve the ban.
Got it in one!

Ie: "Your perspective is all wrong" versus "Your perspective is all wrong, you should learn to draw perspective better."
I think "unconstructive" would be something along the lines of "Your perspective sucks therefore you suck", or just simply "you suck". Both phrases you mention in the last line I would class as "constructive", but you might want to put "Your perspective is all wrong, do <this> to sort it". Basically, unconstructive = flaming.
Also, I notice that it's only negative unconstructive critism that's not allowed.
Surely positive unconstructive criticism is a bit of an oxymoron? Positive unconstructive criticism is just spam, rather than spam & flaming
I try to ignore the existence of math whenever possible.

I really wouldn't say that when there's an engineer lurking :p
I had to cope with some engineering "maths" the other day (My dad asked me to do some log calculations. I feel I should point out that he's not the engineer, the person who wrote the stuff down is).
So I'm sitting there going "AARGH! Simplify your bloody equations after you put your values in! Don't just shove all the numbers into a calculator!"
I've been thinking about the place of mathematics in existence. No matter where we go or what we imagine, there's this seemingly absolute truth called mathematics hanging aroundYou may take a bit of comfort from Gödel's Theorem, then. Gödel managed to prove that, no matter what set of axioms you took, there would always be questions of mathematics that would be unproveable. And to make it worse, you wouldn't know which ones they were.
Also, it's worth reiterating that, in a certain specific way, maths is the opposite of science. Scientists modify theories to fit the evidence. Mathematicians modify evidence to fit the theory. The fact that mathematics still describes the universe pretty accurately even though it does this can sometimes be a bit of a puzzler.
AndrewTaylor

I used basically the same form that Andrew used when we re-did the rules a couple of years ago (to no effect).
Some would question the logic of this.
Also, I notice that it's only negative unconstructive critism that's not allowed.
I think the key there, though, is that vague compliments are far less likely to cause fights as vague insults, and to be honest, "I like your pespective; don't change it" is not much more useful than "I like your picture; draw more like it".
I really wouldn't say that when there's an engineer lurking :pAre engineers usually offended by people who aren't good at math? Sorry, didn't know.

I saw that months ago.
Can we assume I was talking about English?
Of course we can.
I answered your questions with my first sentence, then added a side note about German usage of the word, as indicated by the abbrevation "BTW".
The word is Latin anyway, thus used for the same purpose in any language.
On that note, English uses much more Latin words than German, as standard words, not borrowed ones that is.
Strange that I always end up in language related discussions with you, AT. :)
Does anybody here like Tom Holt?

Yes.
I find his brand of comic fantasy just gravy.
I also wonder if he's the same person as Thomas Holt.
Edit: Whoops, I wrote 'Thomas Hot'.
Who's Thomas Hot?
Edit2: Ooo, we're getting close to page 400, or those of us with the default posts per page are.
You other guys are going to miss out.
I'm reading "Portable Door" now.
Have you read it?
Do you have anymore of his books to recommend?

MtlAngelus being awesome (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=596793&postcount=117).
MtlAngelus should draw some special guest artist edition of S2K's Jump Leads, if he intends to do something like that sometime.
The same goes for Splapp and Traxada.

Well, only if someone else writes it, because my writing sucks.
Fun fact: In GTA: San Andreas, layering another color over a pre-made paint job can produce very satisfactory results.

I did have a pretty cool Slamvan, but couldn't come up with a good picture of it. Los Santos' ambient lighting is usually pretty oddly colored, and it got toalled on the way to San Fierro.

Yep. I think that was the one I got for a quid.
As for recomendations:
'In your Dreams' and 'Earth Fire Wind and Custard', if you enjoy 'Portatable Door'.
Odds and Gods was fun as was 'I expected you to be Taller'.
Oh, I think 'Grail Blazers' was one of his, that was quite good.
The one with King Arthur and the Dragon was enjoyable, but I forget the name.
I read another one with Dragons in it as well, but I'm not sure if I'd recomend it as I can't really remembe much of what happened in it.
And I have no beef with Ikea personaly.

The Hell Yeah Crew was me trying to write for humor and the stupidity of it was just a side effect because that's what I find funny :p
And I think I remember S2k commenting on it finding it funny so I was kind of taken aback with his shock not that I'm offended or anything it's cool

This site has a gigantic number of fonts, all made by the same guy and all are totally free for any use.
I already have so many fonts that my computer has a lot of trouble loading them all, and this site is going to make it a lot worse.
By some immense combination of luck and fudging my way through the hard parts with Star Power, I have FINALLY beaten Woman on Guitar Hero 2 on Hard.
Yes, that song is on the first tier.
...What? It's freakin' hard.
Edit: And then, even after terminally destroying my left wrist with Heart-Shaped Box, I five-starred Strutter on my first attempt.

http://ultimateglobalwarmingchallenge.com/
Look at this:
$100,000 will be awarded to the first person to prove, in a scientific manner, that humans are causing harmful global warming. The winning entry will specifically reject both of the following two hypotheses:
...
UGWC Hypothesis 2
The benefits equal or exceed the costs of any increases in global temperature caused by manmade greenhouse gas emissions between the present time and the year 2100, when all global social, economic and environmental effects are considered.
That's a wholly subjective statement and could never be proved or disproved with science. I can reject it out of hand by valuing the smallest risk to the environment as more important than the largest huge economic benefit. I bet they wouldn't accept that.

I don't understand all the gripe against so called "mickey mouse" degrees. People are paying £3000pa now, which will surely cover the costs. If someone wants to spend £9000 to study David Beckham, then let them, provided the course does not need extra money to be run.
