View Full Version : Your Other Art III: This Time It's Personal

Because I lost the other thread and I couldn't be bothered to find it, here's a new one. Partially because I'd like to see what else you guys have done, but mainly so I tell those of you who don't know about my DeviantArt profile... erm... about my DeviantArt Profile. [Thusly. (http://squirminator2k.deviantart.com/)]
A few things of interest in my profile:
[Rubbish (http://www.deviantart.com/view/14987025/)] - for the benefit of Euan, Andrew and Liam.
[Worms Forts Launcher (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/15147671/)] - for the benefit of Andrew, who can't be bothered to use it.
[The Angular Man (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/15672301/)] - for the benefit of my Dad, who can't see this post anyway.
[The Hero (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/15867635/)] - for the benefit of Liam, who thought it was too cartoony.
[Blown Away - Digital (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/15936718/)] - for the benefit of everyone else, because I haven't linked to any of my Worms work yet.
Just about everybody and his ex-wife's dog has DA at this point, so I think these threads are more or less obsolete. :p With this in mind, all of my non-Worms art finds its way here (http://zero72.deviantart.com) now.

Meh I don't have a DA account, I'm waiting till I have enough worthy stuff to show in there
But funny you made this thread today, I just made this a couple of minutes ago (It's an animation test, I'm back at using Flash MX ^^ I'll hopefully do something with it soon)
edit: I actually was only doing the floating head on the top left, but then I noticed I left too many blank space there, so added that weird smiley thing on the lower right corner. I also had to kill the head because I didn't know how else to end the animation :P

For the run-of-the-mill swine: The penguin represents communism (hence the lazer being red), almost silly in a comical way when looked at, but is really facing a multitude of random hardships, and is morally profound, looking inside. The small house represents democracy, and almost ideal foundation, but is nevertheless facing hardships from those that believe otherwise. The X-Ray vision seeing money in an otherwise blank wall represents society and progress, and how profound it is when we take beautiful plains, turn them into factories, all due to greed.

To prove I can draw something other than cats, worms and legless midgets-
Introducing Oskar- the cyborgic ex-magician out to avenge the death of his favorite rabbit.
The first picture is his basic design, costume and a bit of detail as to how he fires and reloads his arm mounted gun.
The numbers in the last four pictures reprisent the order in which they where drawn. hence number one looks crap.
I'm not sure how they managed to come out quite as badly as they did though. :-/
EDIT: Found problem- Resizing with only 2 colours does not give very good results. :p
Newer shinies less pixeley versions now up in place of the awful ones I first posted.

See, as a Sega fan I'm less likely to have got them, whereas Lemmings is ubiquitous, and Tetris, though Nintendo, is also arguably the most well-known handheld game of all time.

So I made a deviantart account, but everything is very confusing. I uploaded the dragon pic(with full details for those who want to see it) and also uploaded my entry for the 3dworms contest, and yet only the dragon pic appears in recent deviations...
http://distortedlight.deviantart.com
MonkeyforaHead
21 May 2005, 06:14
That's because it somehow wound up in your "Scraps" section. If you submit anything in the "Doodles & Sketches" category, it automatically goes into Scraps, meaning it has less chance of being noticed and is generally regarded as an unfinished work. Annoying, yes. So if you really want it in your Deviations list instead of the Scraps list, you'll have to edit the category it's in.
MtlAngelus
21 May 2005, 07:01
In the scrap section I have the reaper pic, but I put it there intentionally, the 3d worms pic is the one that appears nowhere...
You see I uploaded the dragon, but it had no preview image(not my fault, the thing said that if it was png then It didn't need any, but apparently It did) so I deleted the pic and uploaded the dragon again. I then uploaded the pic I used as entry for the 3d Worms competition, and later the reaper one(under scrap section).
And then all I get under recent deviations is the old dragon link(which leads to a dead link), but the 3dworms pic or the new dragon with preview pic won't appear.
This is so very confusing.
If I check the gallery I only get the old dragon link too. This is very very annoying...
philby4000

If he hires some writers and HTML coders and thinkers as well he could be well on the way to having a half decent website.
Apparently, it looks terrible on purpose.
Q. Why does your site look so ****ty? / Why do you use such huge fonts?
A. My site looks ****ty for the following reasons:
1. Bandwidth conservation. I'm costing my ISP, Xmission, a lot of bandwidth per month, even with the text-heavy layout I have now. Xmission has been great about hosting this site, and I want to make it as efficient as possible while still getting my point across.
2. Protest. I'm keeping my web site ****ty as a protest against all the slick-looking, contentless web sites out there. Nobody cares about your stupid rotating icons and fading links. Mine isn't the only site on the internet that uses a simple layout, perhaps you've heard of this one?
[Screenshot of Google]
Some webmasters have spent years tweaking their layout and designing their site, and very few get any traffic. This site, as ****ty as it looks, gets over 1 million visits per month. I use large fonts also as a protest against all the stylish garbage you see out there. When I go to a web site, I WANT TO READ THE CONTENT. Trust me, that micro-font everyone uses isn't nearly as original as they think. I've chosen a black background for most of my text because it's easier on the eyes than staring at a white screen. Think about it: your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one. Staring at a white background while you read is like staring at a light bulb (don't believe me? Try turning off the lights next time you use a word processor). Would you stare at a light bulb for hours at a time? Not if you want to keep your vision.

Awesome style, but it's not what we're looking for unfortunately.
I'm looking for simple black and white illustrations along the lines of
what you'd see in a reference book or an encyclopedia. Strong emphasis
on anatomy, with a realistic look and non-exaggerated proportions.

Unfortunately, DeviantArt doesn't have a section for music. They don't have anything against using your own music in a Flash animation though, as long as there's more to it than the music.
Try to use copyrighted music in a Flash if you're a popular enough artist, and they'll jump right down your throat.

It's similar to the curvey line tool in paint, except it's obviously a lot better.
You draw a line, then place two points which manipulate the curve at both ends. You only get one shot at placing each of these points so if you mess up you have to undo and start again.

Don't worry, I'm not offended or anything, I know that my shading sucks. I spend so little time on it. It's just one transparant layer of black.:p
That does look very nice though. I don't supose you could give me some basic shading tips?
As far as techique goes, I just use a bursh with opacity and flow set at about 30-50%, as that let's you blend colors nicely without having to pic a bunch of different tones all the time... other than that I just follow tutorials and look at what other people do, as get critique from friends who are better than me ;(
I found this (http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) not long ago.
Once you learn the technique part of shading (the 'easy' part), study reflections and what other people do and try to copy. Which is what I should do, I mean, my goal is to be this good:http://www.ryanchurch.com/ryanchurch_image017.htm
I really don't know what to say. I am not worthy of giving tips ;)

Well, I was looking trough some Magus artwork, and foun that the original looks much more evil and cool than the slightly more anime-style one that was used in those animated shorts they released with the PSX version of the game.
So I started moving vertices around to make it look more like the original. And this is what I've got so far :p
Still a lot of fixing need to be done, I'll probably separate head fom hair, neck's missing too... and general detailing too.
But anyway, I think it's looking far better now than it did before.
Here's the artwork I'm basing on right now: CLICK HERE (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/89/Magus_Artwork.jpg/250px-Magus_Artwork.jpg)

I'd say choppy waves. Though that would take a while.
It would take time... then again, I'm not sure that's water. It was meant to be sand, and the color is because it's night. But If I ad more rocks and waves (especially thoose breaking on the rocks) it could quite easaly turn into sea.

I've finally found the time to read Beings of Light. It truly is spectacular - I was put off initially, mainly because I don't like reading fiction on the Internet.

It's stalled up a bit at the moment with one thing and another, but the good news is that once I get going again, there's only another four chapters to go and they should come out quite quickly.

Thanks, I'll take a look at them. Those things you did look like they were really there.:)

Well, he obviously didn't make the room, just the ball, telling 3DstudioMax to use a picture of a room to shed light on the ball. It's quite easy actually.
(sorry to make you sound less skilled now MtlAngelus ;))

The fist time I looked I didn't realize the teapot wasn't real.
But that probably says more about my observation skills than the teapot itself.

Okay, so I was wrong about it being the last version. I can't help it if Error404 points out a ton of errors I made.

So, without further ado, let me proudly present 'The Offer v79.5' and yes, this is the last version.... .... .... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .. ... ... Okay, maybe just one more."
Just kidding, Paul, nice work.

- Curlier hair
- Better (and bigger) human structure and proportions
- Shine on the tower

Paul: It's definitly an improvement. Hehe, the houses are drawn in orthogonal view :pAs I'm sure I've said elsewhere, I tried doing perspective and then after some frustration said "Sod this". It's not like they're the picture's focal point...
And, yes I have made several changes since I posted the latest "final" link . I guarantee you I've finished now, though. I've definitely hit the "diminishing returns" point now, I feel.
BUMP-EDIT: Of course, just because I've finished the Holonet pic, doesn't mean I can't do more Beings of Light art...
