View Full Version : Your Other Art III: This Time It's Personal
You don't need a tutorial for simple shading. I take it you don't want any kind of realistic shading as that would completely change the look of the comic. Just grab the polygon lasso tool in Photoshop and select the areas you want shadow, and fill it with a darker color.
A simple thing like that is enough to make your images not look flat.
You could also try to make objects in the background lighter colored than foreground objects to ad some depth (outside everything fades to blue the further away it is).

Can anyone recomend some good photoshop shading tutorials?:p
That's neat, philby! I like the action and the concept. If you want, teh Error can show you how he shade stuff. He got a pretty nifty method which has never failed him since he developed it. :)
The trick consists in: Photoshop + Layers + Masks + Multiplication/Screening + Blurring!

Something seems odd about the guy's pose in the second panel, can't put my finger on it though.
Everything else looks good though, the shading fits well.
How's this?

Suggestions:
• Make the cat dropshadow a bit darker (or add another level of shading to it)
• On panel 2, tweak the shade on the guy's face a little bit. Specially around his right eye (left on the screen) and around the mouth. They don't seem to follow the face volume.
Nonetheless, beautiful work, my young padawan. Even better than i'd do myself. :p

I remember a time when threads that hadn't been used in a month would sink into the second page of a forum...
Anyway, my sister and some college mates of her had to design a product and she asked me to do the photoshopping. It's basically one of those things you attach to a shopping cart that scans barcodes and adds up the prices so you can get the current total of your purchases.
The design is fairly crappy, but it was done as specified. :p
All except the scanning pen done completely in photoshop. The pen was taken from google.

I'm not too happy with it but it's good enough I guess. Serves to illustrate the concept.

In my experience, there's also a bit of Murphy's Law in this as well: on my previous computer, it seemed that the longer the time since the last save, the more likely a Blue Screen of Death became.
The Murphy's law part being that if you save frequently, nothing will happen to justify you saving frequently. But if it slips your mind... KERRASH!
Zbrush 3.1 has a wonderful little feature that if you save using CTRl+S it's almost certain to crash. You need to click the save button.. That's definitely ruined my day a couple of times.

Edit: It's hard to think of suggestions, it's mostly about personal taste.
The line art is pretty good, but I kind of dislike the perfectness of digital illustration. I almost only draw on paper for that reason. But whatever.
You could also play around with a third color, but there's nothing wrong with complete black and white.

Yeah I know, it's hard as hell to force yourself to do it. But it gets easier once you get into a routine. I don't want to sound like a jerk by saying it's easy.. I've been able to keep it up for a little more than a month now because of the study group I found, which is basically just everybody studies for an hour a day and posts our stuff on a forum so we can see each other improve and feel motivated to keep at it.

This tutorial is quite nice. I linked to number 2 because that's where he actually starts painting and all that. Note that he's doing it in ArtRage (http://www.artrage.com/) and not whatever application you're using, I presume, but that's okay because ArtRage is fantastic. It emulates the way real paint works, meaning it's not like that weird transparent-photoshop-brush-esque "paint" every other painting application uses that I can't get to look halfway decent for the life of me. More importantly, the palette knife smears the colors properly, and I usually end up spending more time smearing my colors than actually laying them down. It's all quite nifty and etc.
...I hate how I can never recommend an application without making it sound like a sales pitch. :p
Also, howdy y'all.

I do intend to practice, but first I need a little direction.
I just watched the video you linked, good googily moogily!
Great, but what do you mean by direction?
More edits:
Studying fundamentals will help regardless of what direction you want to go with you art. So doing portraits and landscapes is still helpful even though you like doing cartoon stuff.
It's all about learning form and how light works etc. Or do you mean more like how much time to spend and stuff like that?
Many days I don't want to though, like I'm procrastinating right now by editing this post.. :p

Great, but what do you mean by direction?I think he means he needs tutorials to point him on what's right and wrong. Practice is all well and good but without any guidelines you could just be practicing ****. :p
Weell.. yes and no. Philby your artwork is really good, you just don't know enough fundamentals. There is no magical secret that will make you awesome, but for some reason everybody seems to believe this at some point, myself included. Regardless of what style of art you want to pursue practicing these things is really beneficial. You need to know how the real world works before you can play around with it, just like you need to know human anatomy before you can create convincing monsters.
So the main things to do are..
copying landscapes from photos
copying portraits from photos
copying master paintings by copying them
setting up objects on your desktop and drawing them
studying anatomy from photos and books
doing life figure drawing
(pbase.com (http://pbase.com/) is a good site for material)
All this will help you learn how light and color works, anatomy and posing is pretty obvious. Books by Andrew Loomis are great for learning form and is a good place to start, check out Bridgeman too. The important thing is that you do these things for an hour a day (minimum, the more you do the better). Make a schedule so you keep the exercises varied too. Do it every day so it become routine, it is too easy to get distracted, never say "I'll do it tomorrow". And when you're done for the day, then you can explore your own style but with a lot more information to draw from.
That's one reason why you should join the study group, you see all the other people working hard and progressing. It keeps you motivated, also you can chat with them during the streams or on the forum sketchbooks so just ask all your questions there, ask for feedback.. people love to help. I mean it's basically free art school, I'm not trying to sell you anything :p
Many of them are professionals and many are beginners like us, but it doesn't matter, it's not a contest. People like seeing beginners as long as they're dedicated.
The only hard part is getting into the routine over doing it every day. Many days you don't want to, but if you start slacking off you'll fall off the wagon. Not many people do this, so just keep in mind that every day you are studying you are gaining ground on all those talented but lazy people who don't study enough, and eventually you will pass them. ;)
I know I'm speaking like I've got years of experience doing this, but this is what they pros are saying and I know it's true!

Okay first of all when I said I wanted a little direction, I meant absoloute basic things, like brush settings and workflow. After watching a few tutorials I realise that that'/s exactly the sort of thing I need to work out on my own and find what works for me.
Xinos, I am incredibly aware of my lack of fundamentals, and you're 100% correct about the only real way to improve is through regular lifedrawing and copying photos/poses/paintings. I want to improve and to do so I need to get myself motivated and start a routine. If you think your study group can help me with that I'll hapilly join.
I'm glad you recomended Loomis, as earlier today I downloaded a bunch of his books ( http://alexhays.com/loomis/ ) Not as good as paper copies, but I understand the books are out of print and somewhat hard to track down (plus I'm broke).
Also, Pigbuster, I haven't been linked to that tutorial before, cheers!:)

How could the 1st place entry win with such a low level of anti-aliasing?
Because of the cuteness level?I agree. 2nd and 3rd are way better.
Thanks Sarge.
Apperantly I got seven votes! Not quite 472, but it's much better than zero :>
I'm happy with how it went until I got to texturing. I wanted it to look realistic but it ended up looking more like a plastic toy, which is ok I guess considering it's meant to be a chess-piece. But it's not what I tried to do so meh. But that's fine. I'll try to rework it until the next one starts so I know what to do then.
Needed a base, I thought. Very nice otherwise, though perhaps not cute enough in comparison with the others to grab the attention of the masses. :p
I gave none of the top three any votes. :(

That's 330 runs for 8 wickets, not 330 points against 8 points.
Basically each innings the batting side looks to score as many runs as they can before they lose all ten wickets.
It's like baseball except instead of nine innings and three outs per innings, it's two innings and ten wickets per innings. Also, runs in cricket are a lot easier to come by than runs in baseball.
When England bat they'll hopefully be looking to get more from their ten first innings wickets than however many Bangladesh end up making, which will probably be around 350. 350's a decent score, but it's a very flat pitch so England could end up getting 500+.

Anyway, here's a link directly to the scorecard. It'll be accurate until play starts up again in three and a half hours' time:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/shared/fds/hi/statistics/cricket/scorecards/2010/3/84183/html/scorecard.stm
This should help you see the asymmetry of the two numbers. The 8 is because eight of Bangladesh's batsmen are out. The 330 is the total of what all the batsmen have scored between them so far.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/Pixel_Landscape_1.png
The stalactites and the curved rock corner look weird because there's distracting aliasing there that isn't on the other tiles. For instance, the faintly lit cave entrance right beneath the stalactites has soft edges that look good, but it only makes the hard edged tiles right above it look weirder. You have to either go all anti-aliased or all aliased for every tile, and it seems like you're going for the former, but those stalactites and that curved rock are working against that. It would be good to soften those up.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/Pixel_Landscape_2.png
Your rock tiles have really noticeable seams, which looks pretty bad. The top and/or bottom of the tile has this long strip of dark brown going left to right (Yellow Arrow), and it makes the tiling really really obvious, which is not something you want. Also problematic are the various unique spots (both red arrows), which also make tiling obvious because you can see those unique spots on every tile. It's best to make the pattern as uniform as possible across the entire tile, so that there aren't any spots that are "unique", AKA things that appear only once on the tile.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/Pixel_Landscape_3.png
Your grass looks alright, though you might want to try having it not be totally flat on top to make it a bit more grass-like. The little bit the arrow points out bothers me, and... I'm trying to think of a better way to explain it than "it looks like a pair of testicles". :p I mean, not really, but the shape just weirds me out for some reason. It's round instead of spiky like the other grass bits. If you happened to loop the grass, there's no doubt that thing would be really noticable.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/Pixel_Landscape_4.png
I can't actually tell if the water is far off in the distance or if it's supposed to be right up against the rock tiles. If it's the latter, then you'd probably want to use a tile other than the curved rock segment and make it look more like it's up against the water rather than in front of it (water running up against rock would make sand, or some kind of erosion-induced overhang). Having parts of the water seep around and in front of it, etc. Maybe even have the water go in front of all the tiles on the bottom row, though that would need transparency to look good. The yellow arrow points out an area that looks like a seam to me, though it's hard to say why. There's a vertical area there around 5 pixels wide in which the middle-tone blue seems to push down and up further than anywhere else. The red arrows point out two unique bits that loop noticably and should be more uniform. The bottom one is a bit of underwater, darker colored foam that is lower down than the other bits of underwater foam, and the top one is some top-foam that extends lower (3-4 pixels down) than the rest of the top-foam (1-2 pixels down). Foam.
Also, the sky gradient is really saturated. You might want to tone it down.
Finally, don't save pixel art as a JPEG next time. Chances are some of the problems I'm seeing were caused entirely by JPEG compression, and I won't know unless I see otherwise.
----------------------
Your texturing is pretty. With such a small tile size, though, you have to restrain a lot of that to make it uniform enough to tile well. If the tiles were bigger you could get away with more, but I don't know about that. The thing it makes me think about is Aquaria (http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/), which doesn't have a tile/grid system, but rather makes its walls/floors out of a lot of little pieces.
http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/images/aq-screen05.jpg
The game has a lot of pieces that can be on top of one another and rotated around and that lets them make those purty walls. Also note that the background in this screenshot is a looped tile, but it gets away with being filled with unique bits because its really big-- around 256x256.
I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with this, but I suppose I'm trying to say that there are ways of doing 2D video game scenes without tiles. Or maybe I just wanted to pimp out Aquaria a bit because its super pretty.

well regardless of where it is that you're going, I'm glad you went there. I might be able to use some of that "extra bits tossed in on top of tiles as detail" thing, which I hadn't thought of doing previously.
and thanks a ton for the constructive criticism! that was awesome as hell and extremely beneficial. I'm fixing stuff right now.
edit: oh, and I wanted to mention: the sky was tossed in as a last-minute addition. I didn't even think about it as I slapped it on, hence the terrible saturation.
edit2: and I just realized. I'm not actually MAKING a game, PB. I'm just concepting one and making a pseudo-trailer for it as a summer animation project. I'm sure there are more effective ways to create a game than tiled backgrounds, but tiles are the simplest method.

Mayhaps. It doesn't look bad as it is, it's just not very realistic. The detail is more interesting than just a flat color. Just complaining for the sake of it :)

I know, otherwise I wouldn't have suggested Aquaria's level system, since there's no doubt that's a hell of a lot harder to program than a tile-based thing.
I just want to comment on the water, I don't think you should have waves reflecting light underneath the surface. Unless it's a waterfall in which case those details would make sense. Perhaps add plants in the water if it gets too boring without those details?
This might partly be why I saw that water tile as water far off in the distance, actually. The "underwater foam" as I called it kind of look like reflections, so it seems like we're looking down at a plane of water instead of looking at a 2D cutaway view. Something like this...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/water.png
Though the way those "reflections" on your tiles die off 10 pixels down and it becomes just deep blue suggest a cutaway view. It's weird.
Another thing: are the water tiles going to be animated? Water tiles that just stay still rarely look very good, so some kind of animation would be good; which would be another reason to simplifying your water tiles, because trying to animate the details you have now would be a little annoying. I'm spending a lot of time talking about the water because water is weird and can be approached in ways other than making it just another tile. Cave Story has stationary water tiles, and they look quite bad, so there's that.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/water_metroid.png
Super Metroid has a sort of transparent water layer that bobs up and down and constantly moves to the left. There's also a bit of an effect on the layer in which some rows of pixels are shifted left/right a few pixels for some frames. I don't know if I like this too much, though.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/water_ecco.png
Ecco does a good job at it. It has a sort of perspective effect that doesn't actually make a whole lot of sense if you pay attention to it, but the split between the surface and underwater is very clear, so it's unmistakably a cutaway view, and doesn't seem like it's off in the distance. I quite like this way of doing 2D water, even if the perspective is wonky it still looks rather good. The difference between Ecco's and yours is that Ecco's surface has a straight, right down the line split between it and the underwater tiles, whereas yours has a more gradual sort of thing going on, which makes it less clear that it's right up against the camera, hence the distance problem I had with it.
Here's a video of it, skipped ahead to where the camera is stationary and not confusing things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsaroEr87aI#t=0m25s You can also look at ~1:00 to see the coloring underwater, with the light making the water near the top surprisingly bright. The intro cutscene doesn't do it like that because they wanted all the water to be blue for effect, but the brighter coloring is how it actually is in-game so go by that.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/water_evo.png
EVO does it this way too, which might be a rather obscure game to use as a reference, but whatever. It's got some parallax scrolling going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyh1WCyIs1M#t=0m51s
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Teamis/Aku_Pixel_Landscape/water_aquaria.png
Aquaria also does this, but with a nifty 3D effect. The perspective issue has also been lessened by having the surface of the water's color sort of bleed out into the sky, which does a decent job. Movie here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LSJGBqKmGA#t=1m42s (note that this is kind of a spoiler, since the surprise of breaking through the surface for the first time after spending the first few hours of the game underwater is pretty awesome, but whatever).

Yeah I know about that, I decided against putting it up there for a couple of reasons. And it's not like I can host it at both.
Actually, you've just given me a great idea.

Nope. it's the cover-art for ViroCop, an old Amiga game that came out in late-95.
Our third game projects at school are finally finished! Now I'm on summer break
The game is called Ayla and we were eight people making this (Three designers and five artists). It's basically a 2.5D sidescroller where you can flip gravity on yourself and on other objects, as well as rotate the entire level 90 degrees, which turns the walls into the floor and ceiling. We only had six weeks to make this in UnityFree! My role was drawing concepts, building 3D models and texturing, and mostly making sure everybody's work fit the style. Pretty exhausting :p
We decided to upload the game to indiedb since they have a contest where you can win a Unity Pro licence, which would be very nice. We are going to have a followup project later this year to address critique we've gotten. Mostly I want to have shadows!
http://www.indiedb.com/games/ayla
Please give it a go, it's like 36Mb and should take 10-15 minutes to play through. I think they keyboard controls have been fixed but try to use a 360 controller if you can. All feedback is welcomed :)

The art is awesome. Great job to you guys cause the game looks really good. The one thing I can say, though, is that the animations are stiff and lifeless. It feels like she's only moving one part of her body throughout, and the rest of her body doesn't react at all to the motions of whatever else is moving. Nothing about her feels attached to any other part of her.
The physics and controls are terrible, your programmers should be hanged :p
Overall, it's pretty good, though. the idea behind it is interesting, even if it does reek of amateur programming. The one thing that has me baffled, though, is that I'm not sure if I've just finished it. I've just rotated the level and now there's a big wall in my way and I've no clue at all if I'm supposed to be able to pass through it or if that's just the temporary end of the demo.

Haha, well we had no real programmers. The designers had to learn how to script during the project. We did get some help from two people who knew unity well that were hanging out there during the first four weeks.
The uhm, wall you mentioned is a door I think. Or it's because the corridor you have to follow is leading up so you need to rotate the level so that you can fall down through it. You know you have beaten that level when you come to a particle effect that looks like a small spinning galaxy and then credits pop up. There's no logic to it ending, the whole thing is supposed to be a kind of pitch-demo.
Glad you liked the art :)

I'm still doing this thing (http://www.drunkduck.com/Choose_your_own_Nedventure/).
I'm now also running a simultaneous Adventure On the MSPA forums (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8676) too.
It's turning out to be a lot of fun making the characters interact based on two seperate sets of sugestions at once. The Drunk Duck team seem to be desperately trying to get their character killed in the hope of regaining control of the character with the Electric powers. Unfortunately for them the MSPA team are much better at using them than they were.
I'm hoping neither group of commenters finds the other so I can blow their minds by posting a link to the other half of the experience at the end.

So, I've been gone for a while. Listen to what I've been keeping myself busy with, won't you? It's Homestuck related, but that shouldn't matter much.
Beatdown (Bromageddon)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Sound/mspa/Beatdown_Bromageddon.mp3
Remix of Beatdown (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/beatdown-strider-style) (Warning: Rather big volume differential. The Homestuck albums are mixed waaaay too loud). I really need to go through and automate the levels so the volume is more even throughout, but oh well. I actually have a whole scenario that goes along with this. In a nutshell, Bro loses a fight, which prompts Dave to flip the fück out and unleash his full potential, and Bro gives a reassuring thumbs up at the end because god damn doing that in addition to the "full potential" thing is just ironic on, like, seven different levels.
To Stand Against the Storm
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Sound/mspa/To_Stand_Against_the_Storm.mp3
Remix of Sburban Jungle (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/sburban-jungle)... sssorta. Most of it is original. This piece has been stuck in development hell for ages. Around when Homestuck started, even. It's gone through revision after revision and I actually think it's nearing completion. Still a lot of problems to take care of, though. I haven't even touched the percussion in ages.
The title might be a little weird, but it just popped into my head and it's stuck with me. The working title for it was "EEE DOOOM", so... yes.
Whispers
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Sound/mspa/Whispers.mp3
An original piece with inspiration taken from Rose, Doc Scratch and the Horrorterrors, resulting in a theme that kinda fits all three. Also, cheesy theremins, woo. Note that the mix seems a little quiet, and I'll have to take a look at that. Listening through speakers/headphones with good bass output should help.
I'm proud of this one mostly because of how short the development time was. Less than a week and it was done, which... is really unusual for me. Hopefully its a sign that I'm getting better at this human emotion called "composition".
I have a lot more in the works, but these are the most refined ones I've got. I kinda want to be on Homestuck's music team, but I think it might be a little late for that, so... I'm thinking about making a fan album. It's an ambitious mission, but I am fully intent on meeting it or perishing along the way.

By the way, I kinda want this stuff to remain a secret. I'm only posting it here because this is a SECRET FORUM SHHHHH. I'm not accusing you guys or nervous or anything, I just want to make sure, because as far as I know, stuff released publicly can't get put on albums and stuff. God, saying that makes me feel pretentious. Like, "OH MAN MY ****'S SO GOOD THAT "HOMETRAP" THING IS A SLAM DUNK FOR ME". It's nothing like that, I....... I just want to try. :(
It's weird how I'm mostly comfortable with showing off my visual-related arts to the internett, but as far as music goes I'm even more introverted and self-critical than anything else. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing. Hopefully good! It at least means I put a lot of work into this stuff, at least. I'm not kidding when I say I've been refining these things for years. I'm so sloooowwwww but I'm getting better.

I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing. Hopefully good! Everyone has a way of expressing themselves that they hold more personal than other ways. For us introverted people, that usually means we don't show that particular method of expression to anyone at all, or only to very select groups.
the fact that you feel like that about your music just means your musical creations are more personal to you than your art. I've got a friend who's the same way about her writing. She posts them places, but freaks out about what people are going to think about them, worrying they're going to hate her writing because it would feel to her like that meant those people hated her.

A little while ago I picked up Omnisphere (http://www.spectrasonics.net/instruments/omnisphere.php), which was the best $500 I ever spent. Most of the sounds I use come from that, now.

Shatter Child
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/508439/Sound/mspa/Shatter_Child.mp3
The song's meant to give the impression of an almost completely broken (shattered) video game (child) giving one last noisy, buggy hurrah before collapsing into silence. In the same way that Whispers fit Rose and the horrorterrors, this song was made with Dave and the rift in mind. Utilizes elements from Robert Blaker's Upward Movement (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/upward-movement-dave-owns).
Note that I haven't gotten around to EQ-ing it yet, so the sounds might be a little mixed together.
Hussie's going to the New York Comic Con, which ends on the 10th, and it would be really nice to be able to get enough of my stuff together to make a good impression by then. Hooo boy...

Most mangos you get here in Austria are way too unripe and have a nasty aftertaste, that tastes like generic plant stalk.
Mango is good in dishes when sugar is added or as sweetened juices.
Also, to add some spice to this discussion:
Best fruit is the pineapple. Especially on pizza.

Mangos are fickle biches. Oftentimes they'll be too damn acid. However, every now and then they'll be so damn sweet and delicious, makes up for all the other times they weren't. Also makes up for the fact they're a ***** to eat.
