Team scrambles were an integral part of Arena and kept things fresh. Now, the steamrollers will keep steamrolling and the steamrolled will continue to be steamrolled. Plus it leads to stagnation of tactics.)
On the other hand, the steamrolled will improve and adapt their tactics.

You hold far more faith in the common player than I do. :p

On the other hand, the steamrolled will improve and adapt their tactics.
Doesn't work that way in my experience. Good tactics rely on communication, and good communication relies on morale. And a side that's getting steamrolled is naturally going to be low on morale.
It's also difficult for one person to change the structure of a side on their own. Going medic can help, but a medic isn't much use on, say, a side otherwise composed of two snipers, three spies, a scout and a pyro.
On a more constructive note, you are more likely to learn something about morale, communication and tactics if the sides get scrambled and the steamrollers get mixed with the steamrollees.
Akuryou13
2 Jun 2009, 12:57
I agree with paul. especially in an arena battle, if the teams remain the same everyone will likely use similar tactics. players in TF2 have strategies that they specialize in and, for the most part, people will stick with said strategies because that's what they're actually GOOD at. some of the better players are going to have multiple strategies available that they are equally skilled at but the average joe won't.
this doesn't mean that they CAN'T adapt, as it's entirely possible, it's just not very likely. people tend to stick to what they're good at. if it's not working, they'll join a new server.

2 Jun 2009, 13:45
Also Arena is probably the worst mode for team strategy. :p
worMatty
2 Jun 2009, 19:54
Indeed, Dan. It's mostly about ability. If people feel the need to change their class, and the combination of classes and players grouping together changes, and people learn how to avoid the opposition's tactics, there is a chance of improvement. Communication or direction is not always necessary - players can pick up those subtle signs from their team mates by monitoring how they interact with each other and combat common problems and try to do the same.
I see the same in Left4Dead. If some players aren't very good, then during the proceedings of being downed, rescuing and healing each other and using cover and throwables sensibly, they will pick things up from me or other players. It can take time, though.

I unlocked The Huntsman last night. it plays almost exactly like a spinfusor.
it is my new favorite weapon EVER!
and as such I've made myself a spray (shaded version screwed up somewhere along the way and left it without edit: shaded version found):
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8904/snipersprayg.jpg the pink is where the alpha transparency is in the tga.
edit: updated the shading and fixed the issues Xinos mentioned.

I intended to fix those but the shading got borked and so I have to redo it, which is annoying. I've been putting it off :p

Classless update!
http://www.teamfortress.com/classless/
18 new hats! More chances to get a hat! I like hats! Yay! Viking helmet is awesome! Exclamation marks!
Also a cool new Arena map, albeit community (Hopefully not a repeat of Watchtower). Not the most popular gametype, but I love it so I'm happy. :p The question is, what do the next days hold?
Also, here are some hidden pages that I still don't understand how they were found. Speculate away.

http://www.teamfortress.com/classless/hidden/barbary/

http://www.teamfortress.com/classless/hidden/advertisement/
It may be classless, but they are hinting at future mortar weaponry.
I'm dying to find out what the Engineer update will be. Mortar sentry? :D
I would also like to see a proximity alert thingy (some sort of laser-trip mine that bleeps you if an enemy passes).
Also hats are dumb. I prefer hatless TF2. I might just be bitter about not having found any hats yet

And with a new day comes a new update: King of the Hill mode!
GrimOswald
13 Aug 2009, 01:01
Viaduct looks so pretty! I reckon they should give everyone a Ushanka on the day of release; endless Ushanka heavies running around in the snow. 'Twould be a sight to behold. Also yay at more people being exposed to Sawmill and Nucleus, they're good maps. Say, has anyone ever played any custom King of the Hill maps? Does it work well as a gametype?
Also, SPY GETS CAMERA BEARD THE WORLD IS COMPLETE
Classless update has been released.
With a Sawmill CTF map and a new Yukon CP map.
GrimOswald
14 Aug 2009, 16:51
Lots of neat little bits and pieces in this update:
Offblast is a fun map, though quite Pyro friendly, so if you're not a fan of them then watch out. It's a bit different from the other Arena maps, but still balanced enough to be fun and give every class a chance to be useful. (Well, okay, maybe not Snipers so much, but who cares? :p)
King of the Hill is a fun mode, even though it hurts my FPS :( (Stupid old pretty Viaduct). Very chaotic though, and possibly even LESS in the way of teamwork and tactics!
I've not tried Yukon or CTF Sawmill. Damn GameArena servers need to get their act together!
Crit effects now look badass.
The Sandman has been buffed which is YAY for me because the Sandman is awesome. 95 health is definitely a painful tradeoff though; one rocket or shot from the Force A Nature (Point blank) will kill you.
But by far the best thing about this update are the hilarious new animations the losers use in humiliation. Couldn't stop laughing the first time my Pyro went for a jog.
I don't play the game much, but all the same, I want the pyro's firefighter helmet. :p
Alien King
15 Aug 2009, 02:12

Also small update today fixing some bugs. OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME OVERTIME
Indeed, but not only did they fix this bug of the announcer constantly nagging you with "overtime", they also added a variable that actually keeps this "faulty" behaviour:
Due to many requests, added server ConVar "tf_overtime_nag". When set to 1, it keeps the broken announcer behavior

EDIT: On another note, I'm curious what people thought of the Engineer update / unlocks?well they seem interesting enough, but I haven't been able to unlock them yet, so I can't have an opinion.
I don't have the wrangler yet, but I got the other two. Revenge crits for destroyed sentries is fantastic. Though you need a level 3 sentry to get 8 revenge crits, a level one usually won't get you any which is why I don't like using the new mini sentries.
Also racking up kills with a single sentry gun in one life has become much easier since you can move it around. I got 19 kills last night defending on Badlands. Every three kills or so I moved the sentry to a new spot so that the other team never knew where it was :D
SupSuper
29 Jul 2010, 04:42
My favorite thing is the stealth-feature being able to move buildings. Finally you can keep up with your teammates! Or setup your buildings right outside spawn where you actually have metal and then carry them to the frontlines! Or set up entire engineer daisychains so you can have mobile bases!
Also from my experience the remote-controlled sentry seems unbalanced since enemy engineers can just spam them onto chokepoints unharmed, even your own spawn! The weakness doesn't really compensate, either drop the shield or the increased fire rate. The other unlockables seem ok, haven't got any yet though.
Pigbuster
29 Jul 2010, 10:10
The wrangler really needs to get nerfed a bit. Having the shield go away during its vulnerability period is a must and it's honestly weird that it doesn't do that now, and other engies shouldn't be able to repair/reload a wrangled sentry because it becomes a nigh-invulnerable death machine when that happens.
Also, taunting with it should make your sentry do a dance. I'm honestly thinking about posting that idea on SPUF because I'm far prouder of it than I probably should be.
Gunslinger is the best thing ever, and I don't even know if its all that effective or not. I hope they give the mini sentry a bit of a buff, but honestly, 100 metal is so cheap that once I lose it I can just instantly place another one. Also, the mini-sentry is so adorable that it's hard for me to go back to the regular sentry. It's too fun yelling out "RED TEAM KILLED MAH BAAAYY-BEE" to myself every time it gets blown up.
An OD match would be awesome. It should be arranged!

We had a Wile E Coyote moment in Well earlier this evening.
We were playing CTF. A scout had managed to get into the base and steal the intel. By the time he got to the middle of the map he was under tons of fire and died. Luckily he made it to our forward engineer base and dropped the intel literally AS he got there. The Engineer ended up with the intel without even knowing what happened, so our whole team starts yelling at him telling him that he should drop it. After a few seconds he realized what happened, and he does. He gives it to a Demoman, who proceeds to turn around and run back to our base. He turns around, takes half of a step and gets flattened by the train.
For the next minute and a half or so (I'm honestly thinking it was longer than that), the server was covered with the laughter of our team. No one could fight. We just couldn't stop laughing. it was, quite literally, the most amazing thing I have ever seen before in my life.

I actually got it just after making that post, and played it a bit. I'm abysmal at FPS and they generally bore me, but I can definitely see the fun in this one.
So Valve just added the ability to buy the randomly-dropping items for real life cash monies, along with an absurd amount of new items.
It seems they have a bundle to get all of the 5 new sets of items they introduced.
$135???!!! What the Christ? Sure, there's currently a "sale" to drop it to $50 but that's still ludicrous. I think the complete Valve back catalogue bundle is cheaper than that.
Ridiculous.

Oh people will buy that. I think it's an extremely boring way of getting items though, and it also makes it less fun for everybody else who has fought long and hard to earn them ingame. Boo Valve.

They really want to charge €17 for one stupid hat, and even promote that as a super-duper offer in-game?
Anyway, since trading has been implemented too, does anyone have something I'm looking for?

Am I the only one who seems to be getting 2 or 3 less drops per week? To where this week capped at about 5, and needless to say, one was a ****ing Mann Co. crate?
More Valve logic at work, I presume. Give less stuff to the ones who play more.

Hey, speaking of stuff, I'd kinda like a Sydney Sleeper if anybody has one they could trade. I don't have any polypack tradables right now, but I could trade a handful of other stuff. The things on the left half of my 3rd page (http://www.tf2items.com/id/ZeorDangerpants) are things I'm planning on trading or scrapping.

I think the Irish is inclusive, per the Gentle Manne of Leisure's quote "You are as PRESUMPTUOUS as you are POOR and IRISH."
So it turns out Poker Night at the Inventory is gonna feature a bunch of unlocks for TF2 -- a clear plastic visor for the Heavy as a preorder bonus, and then via achievements: Strong Bad's shutter shades for the Demoman, Tycho's (?) God was it satisfying to bust Tycho with a superior full house.

I painted my Trophy Belt (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Trophy_Belt) with Team Spirit. :D Not the most knock-your-socks-off use of the paint, but I think it was really tasteful, and is exactly the thing to brighten up a hat which was previously just brown on brown. The red especially looks great.
It took considerable expense to get the Team Spirit, but hey, my first painted hat. :)
Today on the Zeor Bugs You About His Hats Show, my favorite hat is now my favorite paint color and it is now awesome and a half or possibly all the way up to double awesome. lol oops triple post hi
Big update last night. Round 2 of the polycount stuff. Bunch of new weapons for the Demo, Heavy and Medic, and 20 new hats.
I'm not hugely motivated by any of the hats -- there are some cool ones like the Robin Hood one for the Sniper, though -- but I want the Medic's new crossbow something fierce. It sounds downright revolutionary. Long distance healing!
e: Also the Festive Winter Crates' contents have been revealed. It's all the aforementioned new stuff. Er, some of it. Crossbow isn't in there, or I would think about it. Wonder how much metal they trade for.
Can you actually color your hats now or do you have to trade to get the color you want?
All you need is the paint and the hat. Most of the older paint colors trade for around a reclaimed metal in value, but some, like black, white, team spirit or most of the new colors are rather more valuable. I went to considerable expense to get A Color Similar to Slate. Worth it, though.
I succumbed to the temptation of Saxton Hale's Australian Christman sale and bought the "Bargaining Manne's Bundle Of Bargains" for €49.99.
For every €20 spent in the Mann Co. store in one session you get a random bonus item. In my case I got a Huntsman and a Razorback.
Both which are untradeable and produce untradeable scrap when crafted.
Really useless. :P

With every TF2 update I feel my desire to play it wither more and more.
I feel like now that the store is up and they're raking in incomprehensible amounts of money, quality almost immediately took a back seat to shuttling out as many (fan-made!) items as possible. This past update is incredibly half-assed. Bugged as ****, ludicrously overpowered, not a single appropriate kill console icon in sight, and a good many are completely missing taunts, including the crossbow (is there some good reason it doesn't just use the regular syringe gun taunt?!).
The crossbow is the very cheapest one though. From first person, the "bolt" which is still just the reused Huntsman arrow which still has me bent right the hell out of shape, fires from over your shoulder. From third person, it fires from your face. They forgot some of the texture files, so it looks like baked ass (they might have just fixed this). Oh yeah, and that stupid fricking bonesaw not only heals the living hell out of everybody even looking at the medic, but it's even bugged so he's infreakingvincible while he's doing it, and I don't remember hearing that they've fixed that yet. The engineer's wrench? Practically defeats the entire purpose of the gunslinger, as you can just throw up a fricking regular sentry at nearly the speed of the mini-sentry. Then again, who even needs a sentry now that the Heavy with his brass beast is pretty much a walking one?
...So yeah, maybe that's why, TF2 is starting to feel like a sellout.

Yeah, I just get the feeling with TF2 now is that it's far too complex for its own good. You end up with so much mental overhead that it makes it very difficult to actually play strategically and work as a team. Which is a shame, because that's one of the cooler things about the game.
Oh yeah, and that stupid fricking bonesaw not only heals the living hell out of everybody even looking at the medic, but it's even bugged so he's infreakingvincible while he's doing it, and I don't remember hearing that they've fixed that yet.
OFFS!
That makes the Amputator a straight upgrade from the Bonesaw, making the latter obsolete, since it has no remaining advantage.

Still would be even without the bugged invincibility.
Still would be even without the bugged invincibility.
I wouldn't say that.
The Amputator's drawback for getting team healing is that you are (should be :p) vulnerable during taunting.
And you're more likely to taunt with the Amputator for its bonus than with the Bonesaw (or any other weapon actually), since it gives you nothing except some achievements and humiliation maybe.
No sane person would constantly taunt every 30 seconds with the bonesaw.
I preferred having to make an effort to earn upgrades. Unlocks through achievements was awesome. I began being troubled by TF2 being too easy back when they added random item drops.

Earning stuff through achievements is way easier than random drops, I wish you could get everything that way.
My issue isn't that the game is too easy, just that it's too... too. TF2 used to be all about a simplistic easy-to-read easy-to-play shooter. I didn't care about items when they didn't have much of an impact, but now you have to be constantly figuring out which of the absolute tons of weapons is best for any given situation (and end up regretting it since you can only change back at base anyways), or which is being used against you to know exactly how to counter it. No point in going Soldier if the guy you're fighting happens to have a -60% explosive damage and +30% movement speed and +99% foot up your ass. This combined with the constantly increasing amount of maps, most of them confusing community mazes, just makes the game increasingly unfriendly to come back to.
I appreciate wanting to keep gameplay fresh and an actively-maintained game, but I miss just having to know a few classes and maps.
sellout.I was just kind of mind-vomiting that post, but the more I think about it, the more I think this. This update, to me, is when they officially sold out. Jag says the whole story, really. The Jag was first found fully textured in the Team Fortress 2 game files after the Mann-Conomy Update, and was displayed in the Steam Update image for the Mann-Conomy Update. According to Robin Walker in an email to community author Jman, the Jag was originally intended to be a part of the Engineer Update, and was eventually cut when Valve couldn't figure out attributes for it.Perfectly symbolic of this sellout point I'm trying to make. Not that long ago, they were at least pretending to care, but with Australian Christmas, hell, **** it. Who cares about game balance in TF2? Slap a crazy build rate on that thing and 40,000 people will drop 10 bucks each on it. Hooray!

Is it still possible to host a server that doesn't allow any of the new weapons?
The thing that bugs me the most is, that all these crappy hats and the custom colours to make them look even more crappy, completely f*cked up the game awesome 1960s comic style and the nice personalities that the characters had.
I mean really, why would a Soviet boxer wear a football helmet or native American feather headgear?
Why would a 1960s overly patriotic soldier wear a Japanese samurai helmet?
The other big mistake that Valve made, was to not support the territory control game mode with more maps.
IMO, this is the best game mode, because everything else in the game basically has this 1990s rush and shoot'em all feeling, like Doom, Quake and Unreal already had. :p
Earning stuff through achievements is way easier than random drops, I wish you could get everything that way.
Maybe, but it's more fair. I found it to be just hard enough. You don't want to spend weeks grinding to get an item. But you're right, drops don't make it easier.. it's when they let people buy items that I no longer looked at somebody with cool gear as a skilled or dedicated player, probably just some brat with too much money to spend. It would be fun if they added a label prefix to all non bought items saying "Professional's", or "Cheater's" on bought items :p
But yeah, I agree that the real problem is how cluttered or bloated TF2 has become.

I honestly don't see the big deal. it's not like we're paying for any of the new crap. I, for one, can still enjoy the game without worrying about all the silly nonsense they do to promote it. sure, it's way excessive, but so long as I can still play the game as I have been this whole time, I don't see any reason to complain.

Yep, I've been saying for a long time that TF2 is turning into World of Warcraft. Mostly because of the item craze and the trade chatting. I always want to tell people to stop chatting and focus on the game, but there's an uncomfortable paradox in doing so. :p
We can only hope for a "Team Fortress 2 Classic" now..

The new items are better and by not having them you put yourself at a disadvantage. Plus, for every new item they add the rules change slightly and it becomes harder to keep track of what class+item combo beats what other class+item combos.

Yeah, TF2's reached the point where the more they add, the less I want to play.
Actually it kinda reached that point for me when they introduced the bloody Eyelander. I used to enjoy messing with demomen as a pyro. It was fun to run up to them and go "yeah, how's that self-damage and lack of hitscan?". But then everyone started chopping my head off.

The classes update (hats) made me think "wtf".
Then I started playing briefly again after the Engineering update and was a little confused by all the extras.
I look at it now and don't want to even load it.

Yes, that disturbed a me little at first, especially after the disaster that the Polycount kit bonus from hats has brought.
But:
Players that do so will receive a Genuine quality version. Some time following the RIFT pre-order period, the weapon will become available via crafting.
That means, only the item collecting crazy people, who would sell their grandmother for an extra special difference in an item's title, will get their money sucked out off their pockets.
Requiring money for an advantage is definitely a no-go, but I can live with it if it's only for that short pre-order period.
That is, assuming that crafting these weapons will be in the same metal-class than other weapons, and not like a (Polycount) hat.
They seem to have ignored their own decision decisions - I remember the commentary explained how each class had a very distinct silhouette, and the game was meant to be easy to learn, etc, etc.
I was unhappy enough when they made the significant change of unlockables (something I've never liked in mulitplayer games), but now it's not even the game I paid money for. The hats look stupid and the weapons are impossible to keep track of.
I do remember a while ago though that a LAN server that can't connect to Valve will not allow anyone to use unlockables. I'm tempted to see if that's still the case so I can play an oldschool TF2 game again!

The better items added are the ones that added some useful functionality to the class. Jarate comes to mind (and the Huntsman allows the Sniper to be more comfortable at mid-range than a Sniper Rifle might otherwise do). The Buff Banner I would say falls here too. The Cloak and Dagger change the dynamics of creeping around as a Spy quite a bit too.
The less interesting and often less useful ones are just the ones that give a new weapon that is near identical to the previous one with some numbers tweaked; e.g. the Backburner (but I suppose this loses functionality), the lol-cannon revolver (forgot the name) for the Spy, Natascha.
In either case, but particularly in the first case, there's simply no reason why a player should be denied access to these until they've achieved a particular level of grind. It's even more stupid when this level is random.
now THIS I give you entirely. they've gone completely against their own intent and made the game way deeper than it was ever supposed to be. largely arbitrarily as well, which is kind of annoying.
I look at it now though, and depth is not what I see. They haven't so much added "depth", just "clutter" - sure more items exist and some options are better than others in some scenarios, but I wouldn't say it was significantly deeper than it ever was (then again, I don't play it anymore).

I don't see why they keep adding in weapons with tweaked numbers but no tweaked functionality. I see no reason for the backburner to exist. the degreaser at least adds a slightly different style of play, even if a minor one. I just wish they'd have given us more of the stuff like the sniper got, but for all the OTHER classes. demo got a series of good melee abilities, sniper got some good mid-range, but really the other classes have gotten almost nothing. buff banner, sure, flare gun is nice, the sandman adds some nice functionality, but most of the added weapons are frustratingly arbitrary.

They haven't so much added "depth", just "clutter" - sure more items exist and some options are better than others in some scenarios, but I wouldn't say it was significantly deeper than it ever was (then again, I don't play it anymore).well, I use the term "depth" loosely in that there are more options for how you want to play now. most of those options are nearly identical to how you played before, which results in your preference towards calling it "clutter" which is just as good a term, but still they ARE different play styles either way.
but still. even if the new weapons ARE pointless, I just don't see why bother to boycott/avoid/whatever the game. it's still fun.
My favourite unlock of all times is the flare gun.
Perfectly fits the class (crazy pyromaniac), completely changes the way to play (long range igniting, instead of short range shotgun) and is nicely modelled.
And killing enemies with it (second long range hit is always a crit) is just beautiful. :D
The Sandman is also a great unlock, as it fits the class too (baseball), adds a new mechanic (long range stun) and has nice wooden model.
Another good one is the Wrangler, finally allowing you to aim your sentry.

The Boston Basher for the Scout looks quite medieval, as does the Pain Train for the soldier.
For the Spy, the Eternal Reward as an ornate dagger fits too.
The Engineer is the only one who has no real medieval looking melee weapon though.

For the Pyro, the new Rift promo item "Sharpened Volcano Fragment" is a melee weapon that sets your enemy on fire.
Also, you could use the Equalizer for the Soldier though, and use the grenade taunt-kill to somewhat get his explosive class talent.
It'll be tough for the engineer class to have a fitting medieval melee weapon that has a mechanical/engineering connotation though.

Why, that's the Soldier's favorite thing! Finally a more thematically appropriate hat for the Soldier than a Japanese one.

I dunno, I imagine only a fraction of those are actually in server rotations, and an even smaller fraction I actually remember my way around.
New maps are usually a good thing; an overload of maps may be unpleasant, but typically only the good ones get put into rotations on decent servers (the more poorly designed ones being cast aside) so the net effect is that you have a bunch of maps few people play. Extra items though can change the way the game is played on a more permanent and fundamental level. Maps may dictate how the game is played for one match, items can dictate how it is played in every match.
Extra items though can change the way the game is played on a more permanent and fundamental level. Maps may dictate how the game is played for one match, items can dictate how it is played in every match.
IMO, all those new items barely make a difference. The game is still hyper-fast and you get fragged from all sides in the chaos.
The only few weapons that make some difference are the ones with a new mechanic and the ones that give certain classes a new range.
E.g.:
Tribalman's Shiv, Southern Hospitality and Boston Basher added the bleeding mechanic.
Flare Gun and Sandman added long range capabilities for the Pyro and Scout.
Charging Targe and Eyelander added close-range capabilities for the Demoman.
Most of the other weapons merely increase one stat while reducing another.
In some way, I think of TF2 as a FPS version of Worms Armageddon.
A lot of crazy weapons that provide chaotic but fun gameplay that shouldn't be taken seriously.
Everybody who takes playing games seriously is a fool anyway. I'm thinking of "competitive", "pro" and "league" players. Pffff...

They can make a lot of difference. I really need to know stuff like +X% resistance to Y and +% weakness to Y or I end up wasting ammo and getting killed because that demoman happened to be wielding the magic hat of super soldier resistance or some such. Seriousness be damned, it's never enjoyable when you're losing for no good reason.
One of TF2's biggest selling points was that you didn't need to memorize a whole bunch of ****, everything could be read out visually, and all the new items can really undermine that.

We’ve significantly reduced the amount of memory TF2 uses, which means improved performance. You might not even notice the difference. But what better way to let your computer know you care than by making it work slightly less hard loading your games for you? It puts up with a lot, your computer. More importantly, it’s seen a lot. Too much. Don’t kid yourself, when the singularity hits, it’ll blackmail you into the ground. Be nice to it now while there’s still time.
Gotta love their writing style for this things.
Fun thing is, that in the title picture for this hatless update, there actually are two "hatless" hats from previous updates.

Pff!
All the morons on the Steam forums are going nuts with ridiculous demands like "I paid $20, now it's free; I want my money back!".
And there's already a plugin that checks for paid TF2 Steam accounts and kicks free players, because the f*cked-up Steam Forums hive mind has preemptively declared all free players as hackers, who create multiple accounts.
That's the Cheater's Lament situation all over, only this time with a serious, game-stopping element.
Before, the idiots refused to heal anyone sporting the halo hat, now they're kicking the straight away.
I have a hunch that Valve will not like that, as they will never be able to provide enough dedicated servers themselves and depend on all the private ones.
And the Steam Agreement surely has a paragraph that disallows kicking for being a non-paying customer.
Enter the Russians!
And the Brazilians...

To be fair it's partially Valve's fault for distinguishing free/paid players, though I understand it's the internet and it's pretty likely there will be a cheater/griefer rush so they need a fail-safe if things go awry (they've mentioned in interviews they can cut off features from free members if they get abused like voice chat spamming). But of course it works both ways...
In any case it'll probably cool down in a few months like every other TF2 outrage.

Yes, there will statistically be more cheaters because the total amount of players increased.
(AFAIK, for the first time a Valve game surpassed the threshold of 100,000 simultaneous players.)
But it's not like cheaters and hackers are just waiting for any new F2P game to jump on and annoy others.
I do wish though that Valve increase their dedicated servers all around the world though and that the instant play feature preferentially assigns F2P players to those.
But it's not like cheaters and hackers are just waiting for any new F2P game to jump on and annoy others.
Actually... that's exactly how it works.

Unless those cheaters/hackers have easy access to multiple IP addresses or intend to re-route (and slow down their game) via proxy servers, I'm quite sure that Valve have come up with some methods to easily detect multiple accounts.
Could cause collateral damage if someone hacks on a LAN with one external IP address (e.g. colleges, schools,...).
I hadn't considered this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxM5cNP36TA)

So far my only complaint is that Valve needs to get their hardware up to speed, because now with Team Fortress 2 even beating most-played-champion Counter-Strike with peaks of over 100k simultaneous players online, viewing everything from the server list to your backpack takes a million billion years.
