A friend of mine who has 64-bit Windows XP has said he was able to install W:A on that system. He also said he was able to install it on a Windows Vista alpha. So maybe it'll work..if you trust his memory.. I don't. :/

You can double-click the sprite number in the box on the sprite parameters screen to get a list with a preview.

Good news: I got The Fiddler properly and entirely working on XP-64, Just thought I'd tell you it's possible. This does not, I repeat, does NOT make me retract my statement against XP-64. I still stand by my instruction: DO NOT get it.

[EDIT] :

I've updated my Crawling Fire fiddle. I think there's 2 or 3 new weapons in it, but if there isn't, then tough! But I've improved the Nuclear Strike. It's much better, now. It can't be perfect though. I had to compromise one quality for another quality. I've tried to make it balanced. Anyway, try it out!

Anyone know what's wrong? it's version 3.50B2 can anyone help? if you can please tell me what to do it looks sooooooo fun!!! thanks much

Ooo hello mate first off i said i was a NOOB but this guy can't read obviously but anyone w/ good suggestion as this guy thinks i'm stupid cuz i HAVE to install update 3.0.5.0 then update 3.6.19.0 for it to work any suggestions or help on this please? So basically if i don't have a version below 3.0.5.0 there's no hope for me -.-

XxDangerxX
29 Apr 2006, 00:53
Then there's no hope for you. Period.

Here's the thing:

The Fiddler is about RECOGNITION. It is not able to patch 3.0.5.0 because it can't recognize it. This is probably because it was made before 3.0.5.0. Don't hold me to that, though. All I know is that 3.0.5.0 isn't in the Fiddler's code. It can patch 3.0.0.0 and earlier because, well you can figure it out.

The reason I called you stupid is because this very issue has been touched on countless times in numerous threads. I don't blame you though. I know I wouldn't want to scan through 250 posts trying to find one answer just because it isn't in the first post.

On that note, could the creator of this thread please edit the first post to include a "known issues" section please? That could help :)

I realize this 'topic' died 3/4 of a year ago, but anyway..

I think I've solved the problem, it just needed some lateral thinking.
All you have to do is set the angle to -1 and the speed to a *negative* number.
Theoretically, it amounts to the same thing.

Tell us if this helps, please.

(I feel like i've bumped a thread :o )

I've tried the nuclear strike now!

I had to edit some of it's settings though, because it just kept going into
windows again after the pie finished loading (:().

Other than that, I'd say it was a pretty cool weapon.
Much death and destruction (and illness).

PS. Can I upload my edited version of the nuclear strike?

PPS. No, apparently you need antisilk to run fiddler, DC's beta patches to go on WormNet,
and antisilk and DC's patches are not compatible. So I would say no, you can't use edited weapons online.

if u used an early or no patch but the 3 if u don't have the american version you could go on but ud have to use a gray map and without all the fixes deadcode made, woulnd't that then be possible?

Squiddle
1 May 2006, 09:01
[UFP]Ghost: I don't know about that, but i wouldn't think so..

Everyone else: After a bit of mucking about and reverse-engineering, it seems that -1 is not 180 degrees to the firing angle, but 180 degrees to the collision angle. I would be grateful if Fudge Boy or Spadge could tell us what the calculated-on-the-fly variables are, and whether they are part of WA or The Fiddler.

I hope that made sense.

XxDangerxX
1 May 2006, 10:14
I wasn't actually thinking that the -1 was relative to the firing angle, but rather the track motion angle.

So if you had a weapon and when shot from the top of an island map towards the water it would look like it 'splits' (much like games like arkanoid where you collect a powerup that splits the ball into 3 balls; in the same direction as the ball was travelling). If it split in the firing angle it would look very awkward...

Ok if someone could please help i think i am getting somewhere now i have 3.00 and have fiddler and that and the water color for fiddler is blue and that and i have silkworm and i use fiddler which slows the game down a tiny bit and when i load a map (wit fiddler schemes) it does something but then it just starts as normal. Is it because you can't use computer generated maps? if not could someone please tell me what to do? thanks much

What do you mean by normal?
Have you actually set the weapon ammo count in the Fidller to something other than zero?

Well, load up the demo scheme and check if that's really the cause.
There's a button which brings up a window for ammo & delay settings.
Set ammo to infinite and delay to zero.

Note that if you set Supersheep AND Aquasheep, you'll get both ingame, resulting in the F5 menu containing 6 instead of 5 weapons, so can only select the mole via the F5 key.

Also, if you set ammo to the instant effect utilities (double turn time, double damage, crate shower, crate spy) they're active every turn, AFAIR.

You're doing it wrong!

Start up the Fiddler, load a scheme (make sure it has ammo set), click on the auto start W:A button.
When the Silkworm window pops up, check the box for fixing the WinXP mouse bug.
When Worms has loaded, start a game with ANY scheme and... voila, you will use the Fiddler scheme instead.

No need to close the game!
The Silkworm window of course pops up everytime you start the game.
Both Fiddler & Silkworm are running in the background editing the values in your RAM, it's not like a one-time patch thing.

I'm sorry you misunderstood me(i can see how it is misread sry) but i only did the first time and after that i let it run in the background along with the fiddler and let the scheme be intermediate but on the fiddler it was demo and voila nothin happened lol except very very strange thing happened that no one on earth will probably be able to answer but if you can lol i hit start game and then this wierd screen (can't really describe it pops up for like 1 second then goes away) and then it loaded and started as normal no schemes no edited weapons -.- i'm hopeless well actually my computer is hopeless boo who thanks for any help

EDIT the screen that popped up was like probably the edited version but for some reason it just goes to the loading screen then starts normal

Hmm.
The small window from Silkworm where you check the WinXP mouse bug box should actually stay until you click OK.

I know you loaded the demo scheme. I did that too the first time I tried and it had no ammo set, hence no edited weapons ingame, only the intermediate scheme.
So, load up the demo scheme and set ammo.

[Run, could you make screenshots & images for your nanacide tutorial?]

Sorry i'm bad at explaining but the window is like nothing i've seen before yes i know silkworm and yes it stays there till i clik ok but then the game starts after that then it loads into those four different modes single, multi, internet, options or w/e it is and then i go multi set to intermediate scheme in game and yes ammo is set in fiddler then start then wahla that one wierd screen that no one will know what it is probably then it goes loading and starts normal

go to www.hyperionics.com and find, download and install hypersnap. Take a screenshot of the screen that you see and post it here.

I haven't used it for ages, so could someone else tell him how to set up special capture please?

NOTE: you'll need to cut out the parts of the screenshot that you don't need, as the Forum only likes pictures that have 147456 (384x384) pixels or less.

Maybe that doesn't work in WA (of course you probably have to have windows as well).
Screenshots captured with the Print-screen button only give messed-up, color inverted or black images when used with W:A (and WWP).
Some DirectDraw issue, or maybe a color palette issue, with the incapabilty of the game running in a window. Whatever.

The Pause key has been assigned to take screenshots in the beat patches, though those are not used in this case with Fiddler.
Anyway, here's my new wierd 'utility' the Worm Launcher:

I honestly don't have any idea.

My suggestion is get rid of everything W:A related from your hard drive (except user stuff like teams and pretty much everything unser the "user" folder) and get rid of all Team17 entries from the registry and start from scratch. That's what I did...

Now; another favourite weapon of mine in my aforeposted Crawling Fire #NOLIMITS scheme up there with the Nuclear Strike is my Realistic Ming Vase. I just love it so much, not because it has decent damage (which it doesn't really compared to most fiddler weapons), but because, well, as the name suggests, it's realistic! (First weapon on the util. row in the right-click weapons menu)

On another note, I've run out of space in my Crawling Fire scheme, so I've created another one called XxDANGER. Enjoy!

Question: Muzer, I don't like having to post duplicates of all my files in both these threads. Can we merge them? When I originally created The Fiddler Thread, I was hoping it would be THE Fiddler Thread. My dream was that everybody would come to that thread for everything Fiddler related, whether it be positive or negative. Could we ask for this thread to be locked and have everyone go over to mine with a final post on this that will have the link?

I know that's a big ask, but it would solve some problems.

Hey guys,

I've been having the same problem as Chaos_666, FerretGuy and ttto. I've looked into the problem.

The crash occurs in shimeng.dll, a standard Windows XP DLL which has something to do with the Windows XP compatibility layer. I haven't found how to turn it off, and couldn't look further into the problem - the appearance of the above-mentioned error message seems to synchronously start some resource-hogging loop, so if I don't click OK really fast, my PC becomes completely unresponsive (in fact the one time I managed to start the debugger to find the conflicting DLL, I had to hard-reset the machine).

It doesn't occur on all PCs, even on the same Windows version. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, bonz had the same problem until he re-installed his OS.

My CD came with WA.exe of version 1.0.2.0 (159744). After installing the patch as stated in the instructions, WA.exe was upgraded to version 3.0.0.0, however its size was 236272 (while the accompanying WA.icd had over 5 megs). From what I assume, the WA.exe in my version (European?) is nothing but a CD copy protection launcher, that checks for the CD to be in the drive and loads WA.icd, which contains the real game code. This isn't the situation with the US WA.exe of the same version (3.0.0.0, 3265024 bytes), which actually contains the game code and doesn't use a WA.icd.

Someone has sent me an US WA.exe, which solved the problem.

Regarding legal issues about sending WA.exe from one party to another: I'm not a lawyer, but AFAIK it's OK to send someone a copyrighted file/etc if both parties own a legal copy of the software. I mean, if both sides have bought the game, what's wrong with sending or downloading something to which you already have rights? (of course, uploading to public web-sites is a totally different situation). Correct me if I'm wrong :)

I posted this in the other thread but if I have it in both, I might get a reply quicker so here's what I posted before.

Post #1:
Hey, I need some help. My situation is a bit complicated, but I'll try to convey it best I can here and hopefully one of you can help me. It all started with my WA disc. Basically, I lent it to a friend and he must have scratched it a hell of a lot, because it's really buggy now. What exactly is wrong with it, I don't know...but I do know this; when I try to install straight from the disc with absolutely no worms data already on my computer, it makes no reaction whatsoever. In taskmanager, sometimes WA.exe and a program called wowexec.exe will load up, but they do nothing and usually delete themselves after a moment. So I did what any impatient person unwilling to buy a new CD would do; I downloaded a torrent with a .rar of worms. I installed that, executed my CD, and lo and behold, it was able to install from the CD as well. So it would seem there is some file that my particular CD can't execute itself and needs the help of a file already on my computer. Anyways, I installed the patch and tried to play, but it did the same thing as before...which was nothing. I then tried installing the DC updates, and THOSE made it work. So great, I can play WA no trouble using a sort of hybridization of my CD and a torrented setup.

What I want to do is use Fiddler.

Now, I can and have done nearly everything on that list. However, step 15 is what stumps me here. Since I can't execute a version of the game that is simply patched but not updated, how am I going to have silkworm bump up those last confirmations for me? Is there a file I can edit, or does someone have another solution? I tried executing WA through Fiddler without doing that and it works fine, except for one problem...Fiddler doesn't actually change anything. So I'm assuming the problem lies with my inability to complete step 15. If any of you spotted something else I missed, then please, point it out.

Thanks in advance to any kind person who can help out!

Post #2:
Yes, and I've also loaded other peoples' fiddles. The problem lies with Fiddler not actually executing, it seems[When I click "GO!" it'll say "Waiting for W:A...Starting W:A..." and that's it. Is it supposed to do that, or is it supposed to confirm that it's loaded? Because WA executes, but Fiddler doesn't take effect.]. I can't play version 3.0.0.0, it is simply unresponsive when I click it. Therefore, I can't do step 15 here, which is to run WA.exe in the WA Fiddler folder, in order to bump up the Silkworm confirmations. Or are those even necessary?

In simple terms: Silkworm isn't fixing V3.0.0.0's ability to run on my XP system, and I don't know why. I can't execute WA.exe V3.0.0.0.

Yes, the Fiddler is supposed to confirm that it's loaded.

Shane
4 Jul 2006, 22:52
Yes, but how about the problem of fixing it? Like I said at the end there, I've wittled it down to layman's terms and it seems that basically, Silkworm isn't doing its job. I ran it, it patched that file, I clicked on the v3.0.0.0 WA.exe, and it still wouldn't work. When I run Fiddler and click "GO!" it executes the DC updated version of worms, but Fiddler doesn't take effect, and nor does Antisilk.

MadEwokHerd

Ignore Fiddler for the moment. Can you run a version of worms that Fiddler should get along with or not?

bonz

When I run Fiddler and click "GO!" it executes the DC updated version of worms, but Fiddler doesn't take effect, and nor does Antisilk.
Then you have done something wrong while following that tutorial.
Fiddler isn't compatible with any version higher than v3.0.

V3.0 isn't compatible with WindowsXP, therefore Silkworm is needed.
If you follow the tutorial exactly, it should work.

Edit:
Some people only got it to work when they used a US version of wa.exe.
Others first installed Silkworm 3.5, then Silkworm 4.12a.

Bonz, I thought you were a good source of information, always! Constipated Silkworm is a not-very-smart macro program written by Annelid and Megaworm. It has nothing to do with Silkworm, which is an entirely different program, written by Deadcode! You'd best edit your post.

Shane
5 Jul 2006, 21:46
Did you even read my post, Ewok?

In simple terms for you, my friend, the answer to your question: No.

I have XP, like I said. Which is why I need antisilk to fix it...but antisilk isn't fixing it. I'm nearly positive that I followed the tutorial to the utmost detail, but I'll try it again.

Edit: Same result. Everything's fine until this step.

16. Open the WA Fiddler directory and run WA.exe. A Silkworm window will appear. Check the box that reads "Fix Windows 2000/XP Mouse wheel bug" and click OK. When Worms Armageddon loads, exit it.

The Silkworm window does not appear.

Shane, please read my post above in this thread (right before your first post) and compare your situation to mine. Particularily, check the file sizes - could be you have a "wrong" v3.0 executable.

The hex editing

Hi There,

I am having trouble setting up the fiddler.
I have done what it said in the 1st post, but it does not want to work.
Is there something else i should be doing?

Thanks

I followed the instructions again and tried one of the fiddles from this forum, and it now seems to work.

Do you have to use version 3.0?
Or does it work with the latest version?
EDIT: Now i got it to work with the beta, but when i have WA up and running, i get loads of acces violation messages in the background :(

It doesn't work with the beta.
V3.0 with Silkworm only.

This tutorial is obsolete. Get the new Fiddler version 4.01.

I guess Ed Webb or someone should write a new one though.

I think you should edit 'Back up your team file' from the first folder to 'Back up your User folder' because then you get all your maps and schemes and stuff.

Hoorah! So wait, what's the new method? Just install WA 3.0 and then install fiddler, without having to do anything else?
The procedure is as follows:

1) completely uninstall W:A
2) manually remove the FPTH registry entry if you used the old method (fiddler can't auto-load the game if this registry entry is still there)
3) install W:A
4) patch to v3.0 if necessary
5) rename the v3.0 wa.exe to 30.exe
6) unzipping the Fiddler v4.01 to your install directory
7) move the contents of the "Silkworm" subfolder to the W:A install folder (one directory up; where DXMfc.dll is.)
8) execute the silkworm patch in the install directory
9) patch with the latest beta updates as usual

I typed all that from memory, so I hope I didn't forget something.

So if what you said is correct, there is no need to install 2 copies of Worms?

franpa
14 Nov 2006, 08:09
nope there isnt... the game just needs the 3.0.00.0 exe file in your worms armageddon folder and have it named 30.exe and you can have a fully updated exe file in there named wa.exe

Joeyjoejoe
14 Nov 2006, 09:04
So once it the fiddler is installed then when you update it will automatically make an exe that is version 3.6.26.5?

franpa
14 Nov 2006, 09:09
no you have a copy of the 3.0.00.0 exe file and place it in your beta w:a folder then use fiddler with the original exe file which is situated alongside the beta exe file.

Joeyjoejoe
14 Nov 2006, 09:15
Oh so you install worms (make sure it is patched up to 3.0), then make a copy of that exe and name it 30.exe, then update to 3.6.26.5?

bonz

No need for a copy, you can just rename it.
The beta updates are just compressed archives that overwrite all the files, including the wa.exe, anyway.

franpa
14 Nov 2006, 09:58
what you said IS correct joeyjoejoe and what bonz said can sorta simplify it or something.... actually kinda pointless renaming :D but eh just as pointless as making a copy i guess... altho you need to do one if you want the fiddler.

7) execute the silkworm patch in the install directory

Just to clarify:

When you've extracted the fiddler401.zip archive to the WA directory, you then have to move the silkworm_patch.exe up a level into the WA directory? Or can you run it exactly where it already is?

bonz

You are right. The DXMfc.dll that Silkworm is patching is in the W:A install folder and silkworm_patch.exe can't find it if it is in a subfolder. (Wow, 5 double-lettered words starting with "i" consecutively!)

I have only been using a beta version of v4.01 which wasn't packaged that way and didn't have that strange fiddler.reg yet.

Edit:
Edited the instructions.

Are you gonna write a tutorial for nanacide? You should have a talk with Ed Webb and ask about that fiddler.reg file.

Well it's a lot less content than it was before, that's for sure :) This is it, it's just a slightly more elaborated version of bonz's list on the last page:

----

1. Back up your User folder by copying it to the desktop. This will ensure that you do not lose your saved maps, schemes, mission progress, teams, etc.
2. Completely uninstall Worms Armageddon.
3. If you had a previous version of the Fiddler installed (v4.0), you will need to delete the "FPTH" registry entry. Navigate Start > Run... > regedit to access the registry editor, then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Team17SoftwareLTD > Worms Armageddon and delete the registry entry.
4. Install WA, and patch it to v.3.0.0.0 if necessary. Do not install the update.
5. Move your back-up User folder back into the WA directory, and click "Overwrite All" when prompted. This will restore your teams, maps, etc.
6. Navigate to the WA directory and locate wa.exe. Rename it to 30.exe This will prevent it from being over-written by the updated executable when you extract it from the update archive.
7. Install the update. You will then have two executables in the WA directory, wa.exe, which is updated, and 30.exe, which is not.<br>
8. Extract the wa_fiddler401.zip archive to the WA directory.
9. Run silkworm_patch.exe

bonz

"One" could write a .reg file that deletes this entry. ;)
wa30.exe
Are you trying to raise your franpa-alert level to code red? ;)
AFAIK, the filename has to be 30.exe (unless Ed Webb has added the support for wa30.exe too).
9. Run silkworm_patch.exe
You forgot to mention that silkworm_patch.exe and silkworm.dll have to be moved to the install folder (where the dxmfc.dll is located.
Though this could be remedied if Ed Webb moves those two files out of the subfolder in the zip file.

Joeyjoejoe
16 Nov 2006, 06:12
Also I saw in the fiddler readme that there is a reg file that needs to be executed. Is this true?

I also noticed this in the readme file as well -

And Fiddler prevents you from playing on Wormnet when it patches the game, because
the other players will experience a desync if they don't have the same settings.

Does this mean you can't play with fiddle schemes or you can't play at all online?

Hehe. That won't help anyone downloading the zip file from Wormsmart. :)
Does this mean you can't play with fiddle schemes or you can't play at all online?
The only way to get Fiddler working online is like this:

1) download the attached program "fiddler-clicker"
2) start the Fiddler and start fiddler-clicker.exe
3) load the fiddle scheme you want to play (every player has to have the exact same one or the game will desync'.)
4) start W:A manually (not with the buttons in Fiddler)
5) enter Wormnet and host or join the game
6) when all players are in the lobby, everyone needs to press the scroll lock button to activate fiddler-clicker (This program launches Fiddler via the manual load button, which you can't click yourself because the color palette messes up if you minimize.)
7) the host can now launch the game

Notes:
--Only original CDs or CD images will work, since in v3.0 the CD check is still active. The game will desync' if you use an edited CD/image (water.dir, music files, etc.)
--When MadEwokHerd and I tried this, Fiddler didn't touch these options: turn time, manual worm placement and crate general probabilities.

Things you're missing:
-WA ignores the number of rounds in networked games too. There may be others; we're not sure.
-If you've renamed your wa.exe to 30.exe and installed the update, you will need to modify your serverlist.htm (Worms Armageddon\graphics\ServerLobby\ServerList.htm). The updated serverlist contains hostnames, which are not supported by WA 3.0. This is not a problem if you have separate WA installs for 3.0 and 3.6.26.5, which I'm annoyed that no one here is recommending. I've posted a modified ServerList.htm at http://madewokherd.nfshost.com/worms/ServerList.htm
-If the Fiddler scheme you try to use contains a weapon that is thrown but the game does not have a sprite for the worm throwing that weapon, causing the worm holding the weapon to be invisible (you'll know if you see this, and it won't be a problem until you use the weapon), that will cause a desync. The solution is to fix the Fiddler scheme so that the weapon is not thrown or has a sprite for the worm throwing it.
-If you are sure you're doing everything right and still getting desyncs, check to make sure your versions of WA match. We're not sure whether all versions of WA actually have 3.0 on the cd.

go to HKEY_Current_User\Software\Team17SoftwareLTD\Worms Armageddon

Make sure the path in the entry: "FPTH" matches the path where your fiddler version of W: A is installed.

If it still doesn't work, I suggest repeating the steps involving the hex editor (XVI32).

You don't have to do that anymore!

If there is a v3.0 version of the exe renamed to 30.exe present in the install folder, the new Fiddler will recognize it and auto-start that one.

These instructions should work with all CD releases of the game, either original or budget re-releases.
They won't work with downloadable versions like Trymedia/Trygames.
