View Full Version : Let's play Monopoly (no really, let's)
I don't care if it takes bleedin' months, I want to play Monopoly, and I want to play it in this thread. It'll be damn difficult, it might not work, but Hell if I'm not going to try.
The game will be played according to the 1961 rules with a few exceptions to make a thread-game more manageable. Details on that later. More details on exactly how this will work, also later - I don't want to waste time if no-one's interested.
So, who would be interested? Bearing in mind that you must be committed and visit the thread daily at least, except in unforeseen circumstances where the game will be paused (there's no rush, anyway, so if the game has to be paused for 3 weeks then so be it) but sporadic visits that delay the game randomly won't be looked upon kindly.
Obviously throws of the dice can't be eliminated and there's no easy way to ensure fair play (without assigning someone to sit out and throw the dice for everyone else, which will require even more frequent forum visits than those requested above and put inevitable delays into the game), so we'll just have to trust each other on that. Incredible apparent luck will be suspicious but, what can you do?
Chance and community chest cards could be eliminated, but if we're going to trust each other on dice throws, then we may as well trust each other on a stack of chance and community chest cards (except where a player does not have access to such a stack, in which case they should be eliminated for ease (edit: the stack that is, not the player))
Gogogo ambitious project.

Right then, this is how it will work. Firstly you'll need to be armed with a couple of die or some other system of generating a random number between 1 and 12 inclusive. The only other random elements of the game are the chance and community chest cards, which we'll ditch for simplicity (the relevant spaces on the board will become redundant, as the Free Parking space is). Everything else should be easy to manage, particularly money as it can be denoted with a simple number instead of the inevitable faffing around with notes that accompanies every domestic game of monopoly.
Instead of a single Post summarising the complete state of the game and continuously being editted, i decided it would be better if each player summarises the state of the game (but not entirely; only concerning his assets and position) each time he makes a turn in a post. That way we'll have a long string of posts with the game evolving step by step, so any mistakes can be traced, and any inconsistences noticed.
So, in a post in which the player makes a turn, he should:
(edit: this is going to get complicated...)
(edit edit: this is going to get horribly complicated...)
recent edits are in bold
1/ Check previous posts for errors, especially numerical, and draw attention to them, at which point the game should be paused and the player not continue his turn until the mistake has been resolved
2/ State the amount of cash he had at the end of his last turn
3/ State the amount of cash he has after considering payments of Rent to him by other players since his last turn, and also purchase of property from him, at the value(s) he asked for in his last post (see 8), and purchase of property by him from another player, at the value(s) he offered to pay for them in his last post (see 9), describing each transaction clearly
4/ Perform and state any purchase/selling of houses/hotels, payment of bail, etc, selling of property to another player if that player has made an offer to him for it, purchase of property from another player if that player has put it up for sale, stating costs and locations, and describing each transaction clearly
5/ State his location, the value of his dice throw, and his resulting location according to the dice.
6/ Acknowledge any Rent or Tax as appropriate and state its value and recipient, or state collection of salary where appropriate, describing each transaction clearly
7/ Buy the property (if any) landed upon, if unowned, if desired, stating the transaction and its name/location and price
8/ List his properties in order of value (i.e. clockwise from Go around the game board) and state their development if any, so that other players may refer back to this for an updated view of the game, and also list with each property the amount in cash he will accept from another player if that player wishes to buy it during that player's turn, whether he wishes to sell it or not, and listing the players he will accept the cash from if not Anyone
9/ List all other properties owned by other players along with an amount in cash he is willing to pay for it, or accept as substitution for cash in the event that that player owes him Rent, if greater than board value (unlisted properties will be assumed to be at board value)
10/ State the amount of cash he has after considering all transactions made throughout the turn
Therefore the rule is that, if you have offered a property for sale and another player buys it in his turn, or offered to buy another player's property and that player accepts the purchase, you canot pull out of the transaction
In other words, describe everything in as much detail as possible, but consider only your own assets, and transactions that affect your assets. Tell me if there's something i may have missed, or something you don't agree with.
The only thing that I've having trouble with solving is the private transactions of properties between players. It'll be difficult to negotiate prices because not everyone will be present to out-bid another player if they want to, and having a big auction between turns will hold up the game horribly. I'm thinking about it, and welcoming any ideas for that...

Say I have one of the train stations and I want to flog it on.
I say "The highest bid after x units of time can have the train station".
It's the fairest you're gonna get really. You could set it to a large amount of time (like a day), but then they'd slow the game down...

No need to grab the best tokens, we can ALL be the thimble.
We'll need a JPG of the board or something, to keep track of where everyone is.
Yes, i noticed myself that it would be hard to work out and keep track of where the other players are, but that's rarely useful in a game of Monopoly so there won't be much need. Players need only concentrate on their own individual paths, which can be done easily enough in text.
And i'll check out that online thingy in a moment, thanks for that :)

A who?
Anyway I considered an idea I thought up earlier on and decided it wasn't the crap idea i thought it was going to be, but turned out to be an ingeniously cunning solution. Maybe.
Actually it's simply this: a player wishing to sell a property names a price, and whoever nabs it gets it, irrelevant of the other players. That'll encourage the seller to start with a high price, without giving a big advantage to the first person who can buy it, and it will encourage buyers to buy it in fear of losing out if they don't. That way it's straightforward. And the seller should not be able to pull out if someone nabs his property, since the transaction will affect the course of the game.
Also it's not about selling and asking for a price, it's also about eyeing up other properties and offerring cash for them.
The other thing is, when someone lands on a biiig rent property, they can't afford the cash but might consider substituting property for cash instead, often more cash than the property could ever hope to achieve in value.
So i propose this: after listing all your properties, each with an amount of cash you'll accept from other players who wish to buy any one of them, you should also list all properties belonging to other players and state an amount you're willing to pay for them (or accept as a substitute for cash if the player owes you money)
Ah, complicatory. I'm going to edit my last last post.

What you're suggesting sounds to me like a Dutch auction.
Here we go:
Regular auction: Players bid increasing amounts of money until only one player is willing to pay.
Dutch auction: Seller offers decreasing price until one player is willing to buy.
Sealed bid auction: Each player makes an offer, in secret, and the highest one wins. The bids are usually then made public.
Sealed auction might work actually, using the PM system...

Can I just point out that generating a random number between one and twelve is not equivalent to rolling two dice?
Firstly, becasue two dice cannot roll a one, and secondly because 7 is much more likely than 2 or 12 if you use dice, because there are more ways to make it, but a random number is... well, random. You have to use a consistent system (you can't have one person getting twelves every eleventh turn and the next person getting sevens all the time), and ideally one equivalent to dice to maintain the pace of the game.

I'd like to play, if it's not too confusing.
Incidentally, I actually have CD-Rom Monopoly, which can be played online. If anyone else has it...
Well, considering i said in the first post that people have to visit this thread every day for this to be doable, then anyone who's already been accepted into the game who doesn't reply by half-nine tonight to confirm that they still want to play, given the rules in my second post, will be removed and you can join, but at the moment we may have enough people as it is. Too many people increases the probability of delays in the game :X
But if you don't get in, perhaps next time - if this is a success.
I'm still in.
How do we decide who goes first?
Alphabetically, because it's simple. Traditionally we'd roll a die but that's unnecessary faffing around in my opinion.
Meanwhile, THE RULES.
If you don't know the general concept of Monopoly then, bye, you're not human. Everyone else has played Monopoly. So I'm not going to explain the general idea. I'm not going to list all the rules either, just the important ones that need to be changed, or ones that sometimes confuse people.
Now, according to the 1961 rules, if you land on unowned property and don't wish to buy it, it gets auctioned off to the highest bidder. We'll ditch that, or else we'll have to wait at least half a day after each turn that someone does land on unowned property, just to get the bids in (and even with a sealed auction, all the bids would have to be PM'ed to someone who isn't playing, which i can't be arsed to sort out). So if you land on unowned property and don't want to buy it, you carry on as usual and the property remains unowned.
Has anyone noticed that Monopoly has a distinct smell about it? Everytime i get my rule pamphlet out it has this smell, and sometimes other things "smell of Monopoly" (which does a good job of cunfusing nearby people when i draw attention to this fact)
The Free Parking space does nothing. If you land on it, nothing happens. This is also true of all Chance and Community Chest spaces because we're ditching those cards.
Jail - if you land in jail you need to pay £50 immediately and continue as normal on your next turn, OR wait until your next turn, and see if you throw doubles. Throw doubles and you're out of jail and you can move the number on the dice, otherwise stay in jail and do nothing. But you cannot stay in jail and do nothing after your third turn in jail: if you fail to throw doubles you are forced to pay £50 and then move off according to the number on the dice.
Bear in mind that, according to the rules i have, Jail does not prevent you from buying or selling property or houses, or collecting rent, etc etc. The only thing it does is stop you moving.
If you throw doubles during the normal course of the game, then you get another turn. Simple as that. I fear that that might complicate some things, but it's too fundamental a feature to remove.
Houses can only be built on properties for which you own the complete colour group. You must build the houses as evenly as their number allow (i.e. not have 4 houses on one and no houses on the others, but can have 2 houses on one and 1 house on each of the others) You can build as many houses as you like in any one turn, but have no more than four houses on any one property (unless it's a hotel, which is equal to five houses)
Mortgaging and interest is damn confusing, so we'll ditch all of that. Simply put: if you want to sell a property to the bank, you get half the board value back in cash and the property becomes bog-standard Unowned property.
Read my second post in this thread for details on private property transactions between other players (also, properties with houses on cannot be sold - only undeveloped properties)
Any questions?

Oh yeah, another thing I forgot to mention is that according to the official rules, you can buy properties on the first circuit (i normally play it with the first circuit being mostly useless, not sure if anyone else does...)
Let the winning... begin!
Starting turn with £1500
Starting from Go, i throw 3+3 = 6 and land on The Angel Islington and i'll nab that
£100 to pay Bank for purchase of The Angel Islington
and since i got a double (if you get another turn, you can skip out 8, 9 and 10 (see second post) until the very end of your post)
Starting from The Angel Islington, I throw 1+3 = 4 and land on Just Visiting
*does nothing*
Ending turn with £1400 and
The Angel Islington, undeveloped (accepting £500 from anyone who wishes to buy it)
Oh yeah, it might be a good idea to name who's next, so people don't play out of turn.

Strictly speaking, you can't buy anything on your first lap of the board, but it's probably wise to pretend that isn't true.I don't think that's an official rule, it's just one of the many variations on said rules.
Really, what game has more potential rule variations than Monopoly? Maybe if you played Scrabble and allowed proper nouns, or disallowed plurals, and so on, but I'm thinking about common rule variations.
Off-topic, I know, but has anyone here played Careers? It was a similar game to Monopoly, but it never really took off.

There are loads of versions of Scrabble. There's Clabbers - where any ANAGRAM of a word is allowed - for example. And there's a bigger board design with all kinds of crazy squares, and there's loads of others I can't remember.
Upwords! :D
btw Run, could you mark properties on the board which have been bought (maybe with the owner's token), so that players can easily know which properties are already taken and to what players they have to pay if they land of them.
That might actually do more harm than good. I can't update it after every turn, so if somebody uses the picture purely for that information then they might get it wrong anyway. They could check, but then there'd be no point in marking them.
Listing properties at the end of posts will have to do - but take care to make sure that the latest lists are still valid; people may have exchanged properties in the few posts between that list and your turn.

A lot of people play by some really odd rules. My family plays by a rule where all expenses in the chance and community chest pile up in the middle of the board, and whoever lands on free parking gets all the money there.
I let the 10% thing slide because it was written on the board i linked to, and also three people have landed on it now. But the extra £200 thing certainly isn't in my rule booklet. First i've heard of that rule actually.

Regarding the "double for landing" thing, it's not an official rule. Although it is in Careers.
Things are starting to warm up a little as the Stations come into play. SupSuper wants to go for the set, but Sarge is holding on to Liverpool Street. The Stations, although regarded by the professionals to be not worth much in the long term, are useful in the early game as a reasonably steady source of income. And some intriguing manoeuvres are beginning as the high-profile properties begin to be picked up.

No you don't. A station-to-station hop requires a throw of 10, and you got a 9, which puts you on *MY* Northumberland Avenue. That'll be £12 please ;)what? i can't believe it. i checked it three times, and i still got it wrong? it's this thread i tell you!
double post edit:
On an unrelated note, Regent Street and Oxford Street appear to be the wrong way around on the board I've provided - Regent Street is next to the Go to Jail on my physical board.
So everyone keep your eyes peeled.

Right. I'm going to Exeter uni tomorrow morning, and as such the computer is being dismantled in 20 minutes and packed away. I won't have internet access until
a/ I get the computer re-assembled and plugged in in my room, with an internet access card from the uni
b/ I get into the Library or computer room to access the internet
This may not happen tomorrow, it might not happen for a while depending on the circumstances. My friend went down to Exeter uni a week ago (as he's in the orchestra) and he hasn't been online since, despite his addiction to the internet. So who knows what's happening there.
Just so you know - i might not be able to visit this thread for a couple of days, but I hope to be able to get online tomorrow somehow.

The amount you pay for landing on Electric Company or Water Works is ten times what's on the Dice, not always £100. And that's only if they're both owned by the same person (in this case they are) otherwise it's just four times what's on the Dice.

You should have taken the opportunity to get your yellow without giving me a complete set ;) (i.e. for the pentonville or whatever it was) Then i'd have been in deep trouble had i not got my hands on Euston.
In retrospect, making that Pentonville offer was a bad idea. I was just lucky you didn't take it.

Meh. I've played a very old Monopoly set and they're brown. IIRC, Bodington Hall is brown in the Leeds University board.
I've seen Monopoly boards that start with a purple street, but never with British place names on them. Perhaps they exists. It wouldn't make them Right.

And, according to this (http://www.tkcs-collins.com/truman/monopoly/monopoly.shtml) page, there is apparently a 2.5 percent chance each that someone lands on any one of your properties in any one rotation. Whether the number of landings so far matches up to that I can't be bothered to work out.

Mortgaging and interest is damn confusing, so we'll ditch all of that. Simply put: if you want to sell a property to the bank, you get half the board value back in cash and the property becomes bog-standard Unowned property.

rofl @ having to sell a house to pay £4
And, according to this (http://www.tkcs-collins.com/truman/monopoly/monopoly.shtml) page, there is apparently a 2.5 percent chance each that someone lands on any one of your properties in any one rotation. Whether the number of landings so far matches up to that I can't be bothered to work out.
The average (whether you pick mean, median or mode) roll is seven. Therefore, in any given trip around the board, you can expect to land on 1 in 7 properties; which is to say, if you pick a property (Mayfair, say) there is a one in seven chance of landing on it. That's about a 14.3% chance. If you own more properties than one, obviously the chance goes up, and clearly it is affected by how close together your properties are, in complex, mathematical ways.

Not in any one turn, though, for obvious reasons. Starting from Old Kent Road, you haven't really got a 1 in 7 chance of landing on Mayfair :)
Over several turns, the chances of landing on any one property even out, and over infintie turns, they become near identical. But things like jail, chance and community chest, and doubles, tend to interfere and put slightly more chance on some properties than others.

There is that. But as a rule of thumb, I take this to mean that I have to get past the whole Greens And Purples zone eventually, and I have no more than a 2 in 7 chance of hitting Mayfair or Park Lane on my way past. 2 in 7 is still not really to my tastes, but it's better than, say 3 in 7. Or 4 in 7.
In theory I'm sure I could work out the odds much more precisely, but I'm not going to. At least, not until I can spend the time to do it properly, and create a huge, ugly, and frankly totally unhelpful equation that I can get published in The Times because The Times love to print equations people have worked out for stupid stuff like that.
I'll maybe wait until I can call myself Andrew Taylor MPhys to do that.

Fine, I'll just have to suck the fun out of something else instead. All I need is a moderately complex game with some dice in it.
