View Full Version : The O.D Get-together: November, Anyone?
Squirminator2k

I'm very close to setting an actual date for this get-together, and suspiciously close to actually planning something people might actually possibly enjoy doing, possibly. In my tiny little mind, I picture the following:
We'd meet in Milton Keynes at the Point (which may be spelt with a Y, I forget) some time during early November - more likely to be a weekend. From there we can see a film and/or go ice-skating, probably both because it makes sense to me for some reason. After that, I don't know, we generally mill about Milton Keynes' shopping area thingy wasting money we probably don't have until we go home.
Okay, it's not a definite plan. We could probably throw some bowling in there as well for good measure. How does this sound to everyone, and can we all organise a day in November to do this...? I would love to see this happen some time this year.

It'd be great...but why Milton Keynes? Wouldn't somewhere nearer the middle of the country be fairer? I'd have trouble convincing my parents to let me go so far away to meet people she doesn't know.

My November's wide open, as far as I know. If it's during the week I may have to blow off some lectures, though, and I'd rather not. (Though that may change after the courses start).
Hmm, Milton Keynes isn't too far away, i might tag along if that's alright?

I'd like to come to an OD get-together, and Milton Keynes isn't too far away from where I live.
Only problem is, even if I've passed my driving test by then, I won't have a car (not getting one until after university), and I doubt I could borrow my parent's car for that amount of time.
Also, in November, I'm resitting a couple of AS exams, so I'll really need the time for revision (plus, I've usually as busy during the weekends as during the week).
Sorry :(

Milton Keynes isn't too far if you put it in respect to the universe.

I can't skate at all.
What I can do is put on skates, stand on ice, and walk about as if I'm on land. People watching wouldn't know I was wearing skates unless they cold see them. As a result, while I'm not a bad guy to have around on ice, it's not a whole heap of fun.

It'd be great...but why Milton Keynes?
We'd decided waaay back in July that Milton Keynes was probably the best place to meet up as it was generally central-ish for all of the UK ODers. Also I was born there and I like it. I was there yesterday.
Hmm, Milton Keynes isn't too far away, i might tag along if that's alright?
Most certainly - anyone who wants to come is more than welcome to. Besides, it'd give me an excuse to talk to you face-to-face about CF3 :p (speaking of which, looks like I might have to change the name - Tower Studios, which comprises of former Sensi guy John Hare, as well as two former Bitmap Brothers personages, are woprking on a mobile version of the original CF and it looks like they might work on a version of CF3 themselves somewhere down the line... but anyway).
I'd like to come to an OD get-together, and Milton Keynes isn't too far away from where I live.
Only problem is, even if I've passed my driving test by then, I won't have a car (not getting one until after university), and I doubt I could borrow my parent's car for that amount of time.

Incidentally, Mac-Man is your new nickname. Use it well, my son. :p
With regards to transport, my girlfriend and I would most likely be getting the bus from Luton to Milton Keynes anyway. Might be worth looking into Public Transport or, failing that, renting a car. If, after all of that, you still can't turn up because of those exams and revision and stuff then it's a shame, because I'm sure most if not all of us here would want you there.

THis makes me sad. I will cry.
What we need to do now is to sort out a date. Preferably in November (for SargeMcCluck's sake), and preferably on a Saturday or during a half-term week or something, if there are any in November. Or something. The obvious place to start is...
Saturday 6th November
Any objections and/or problems with this day?

Public transport is a bit non-existant where I live... I'd have to get to Stansted Airport, which is about 20 miles away, and then, trains only seem to go to London.
Also, I can't rent a car, because if I've passed my driving test by then, I'd have only been driving for two months. And car rental companies don't hire out cars to under-21's.
And finally, I can't make the 13th of November for certain reasons

According to Virgin Trains Dot Co Dot You Kay I can get to Milton Keynes that day by train, or for the same price I could buy forty-three pints of lager. I'm going to look for a sensibly priced means of locomotion.
Edit: So that's £60 by train or £20 by coach... But they don't leave after 9PM, so if we do anything late that'll need a hotel (and if we do anything early it'll need an alarm clock :)).
(On the National Express / It will cost you far less)

With regards to time of day, I always imagined it would be soemthign like 11am to evening-ish times, which is pretty much how the day went the last time I was there with a group of friends.

About how much money do you suppose would get one from Pennsylvania to Milton Keynes and back?I've got $356 on round-trip from Philadelphia to London through Detroit (although I do have to wonder, why Detroit?), assuming that you'll be staying for eight days in late November. http://travel.priceline.com/travel/airlines/lang/en-us/fare_results_bk.asp?session_key=410011AC420011AC20 0408301730151d2401200336&plf=pcln&path=cfe
It'd cost extra to get there from your local airport though; you might want to tack on $150 as an estimate.
Hmm. Well, that is pretty ugly, but not impossible...

This thread needs stickying.
If I'm gonna be coming to England (which is looking more and more probable) I don't think I'll be going and leaving for a single day, so I'd need either somebody kind enough to take me in for a couple days, or a hotel.
BetongÅsna
2 Sep 2004, 01:07
Well I'm going to have to book a hotel for the night, but it would only be the night. I'd try to get the Travelodge in the centre of Milton Keynes. You could come to the same place, I suppose.
OldSkoolCrazy
2 Sep 2004, 01:49
The only way I could come if some I randomly got $1000 ($500 for fliying, $500 for hotels and expenses), my parents go suddenly nuts and let me go, and accompany me because they need to for hotels. Or if somone invented a teleporter I could use by November 5th or alien transported me their on the 6th.:p
So my chances are: 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 001 and 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999

So the current plans are, everyone's meeting at The Point in Milton Keynes on Saturday 6th November at 11am, and from there we'll either go skating, bowling, see a movie, go to Pizza Hut, or some craqzy combination of the lot.
In a further attempt to concrete my reputation of being a Sad Sad Man, I will be drawing a picture of my Squirminator2k character and having it printed onto a tee-shirt. So you won't not be able to recognise me (although Adrew will probably say, "PAUL?! 3 Sep 2004, 00:36
I could make 9.35AM to 8:50PM that day by coach, so that would be fine for me. We can always meet at 11 and anyone who can't make that can join us when they arrive. It's easily done, especially if we swap mobile numbers. It'd be nice to have everyone there at the start, but it depends how many can make what time, really.

Well, if I'm gonna be making this, then I'm gonna have to start getting a passport and booking a flight, like, very, very soon. Like, kind of immediately-ish.

So, someone phoned you up out of the blue and said "Hi, is that prostitute?"
Well the conversation was more along the lines of:
Me: (Groggy, having been rudely woken up at 1:20am) ...Hello?
Guy: Hey, it's me.
Me: Me who?
Guy: Me... you ghave me your number in the chatroom.
Me: Oh, someone's been giving out my number in chatrooms for some reason. This isn't the first time this has happened.
Guy: Oh. (Pause) ONly her username was Prostitute...
Me: Yeah, that's not me.
Guy: Sorry.
Me: Don't worry about it. Bye.
It worries me that he mentioned her username as if that might jog my memory. "Oh, Prostitute? Oh yes! I keep forgetting about my illicit Chatroom activities where I lay in bed half-asleep pretending to be some girl so that pervy men such as yourselves can wake me up and **** me off!".
How about somewhere like...I don't know, Doncaster? Sheffield? Derby, maybe?
The slight advantage of Milton Keynes is that there are actual real actual things to do in a real actual real city centre with real actual actual real places where you can pass your time. Unfortunately I don't know diddly about Doncaster, Sheffield or Derby. We might as well go the Whole Hog and suggest Ossett - maybe we can ransack the Team17 offices. I don't know.

1. I live "a little" Far away from England(Pennsylvania).
2. I'm really busy cause school is starting.
3. I could deffinantly get really cheap tickets(like 200 bucks) but... It's kind of a waste..........
Well I've never been to Europe and probably won't make it there for a while, but that's okay, I'll be less than 20000km away. :)
Well, my parents wouldn't ever allow me to meet people I didn't "know.
So how exactly do you meet people? If you know them allready, you can't really meet them, and if you don't, your parents wouldn't let you...
I actualy have papers now that would allow me to leave the country and still be able to return. Now if I can only find a few hundred bucks for the airplane tickets... Can someone in UK order a big crate of something from US that I can sneak into?

With regards to mobile phone numbers, do you reckon it's safe to post them in this thread or should we gather email addresses and then just email all of the people who are going with our numbers? If that makes sense.

Neither do I. Nothing to be sorry about. I don't feel I need to drink to loosen up, etc. Also, one of my friends who does get drunk on occasion told me that I 'get on well with drunk people'. I'm not sure whether that's a good or bad thing. I guess it depends on how drunk the person is.

A friend of mine is allergic to alcohol, but it seems that's for the best, really. I can't imagine him more drunk than he appears when he hasn't been drinking (which of course is always). If you follow me.
Do they teach how to type that sentence so it makes sence in these American universities?

Seeing a film is optional. I forget if MCI still have their cinema inside of the Point, but there's that EasyCinema there if we book ahead. There's definitely bowling and also ice-skating. There will most definitely be an excursion to Pizza Hut, if only to buy nachos.
Oh, and there's a little videogame stall on the Market which Amy (my girlfriend) and I were unsuccessful in finding the last time. But they're there. Reckon we can probably find them if we put some effort into it (remember Andrew, this isn't an Apathy Clan get-together - if it were the planning wouldn't have gotten this far).

:DLet me tell you why I will never be able to come to these gatherings till I turn 25, which will be in 2015.
First of all, I'm Stateside, meaning that getting there will require a long transit via airplane.
Also, my parents are weird about meeting people who I've met online (even guys like you who I've practically met already, and obviously know who you are). Therefore, I will not be able to meet any online person till I'm out of the house.
When I get into college (around the time I'm 18 or 19), I'm gonna be broke, and in no way will be able to afford the flight or lodging. In order to ever afford it, I'll need a steady job with good pay, which is impossible while in school.
Plus, I'll want to buy a house or apartment once I'm out of college (around the time I turn 21), which will cost more money. Therefore, I estimate I'll be 21 by the time I'll have enough cashflow to come, and not be sneaking away from my parents.
Of course, by the time this all happens, the rest of you won't be able to get together anymore. Therefore, I'm quite sure I'll never meet any of you in the UK, at least not in a big group gathering.

Unless it's an acoustic.
Now that's about as Politically Incorrect as you can get. Even if Blinx did have such a mental condition whether or not it would impede his ability to play the guitar hardly matters, does it? You... make... me... SICK.
That was a joke, by the way.

Don't worry. Without an amp he'll be harmless.
You can play electric guitars without an amp if you strum them hard enough. My brother is an expert at this (apart from the making nice tunes part, at which he is merely passable). They just sound awful (mainly because the top end of the string makes as much sound as the bottom end, except at all the wrong frequencies).

True.
Any confirmation on the date?

Yes, I know, but it is not very loud, so it would not be a big problem.
Edit: There is some guy making noise almost every day with his electric guitar here, on campus near the student center. He also tries to "sing". Neither of the two are plesant sounds. Someone should really steal his extension chords.

M3ntal has said that he plans to bring a laptop with some, ahem, "custom W:A beta's Deadcode sent me ;)" so instead of me bringing down a whole other laptop I've burnt all of my Amiga Forever stuff onto one glorious CD. Now those of you that haven't been able to play Team17's classic Amiga titles will finally get the chance!
Unelss there are any objections - and everyone seems to be okay with both dates at the moment - I'm going to assume this thing is happening on the November 20th.

I'm now busy on the 27th. My best friend's 18th birthday party. So I'll be far too busy with alcohol and the fairer sex to come up. So for me, it's the 20th or nothing people. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any objections to that.

I am now going to set the date of the 20th in stone unless there any any serious objections. One of the reasons we moved the Get-Together to November was because of Alex's schedule, and also his birthday, and to have to have it on the 27th would be silly considering.
Unless there are any serious objections to this date, the Get-Together will be happening in Milton Keynes on Novemebr 20th.

I was planning on buying a new laptop before the Get-Together but my recent job situation kinda crapped all over that particular possibility. So it doesn't seem likely I'll be bringing one.
Just out of curiousity, have you tried to get any Amiga emulation running on that laptop at all, and does it work at a reasonable speed? Only I've put this CD together, y'see...
AndrewTaylor
20 Oct 2004, 15:14
I suspect 800x600 is plenty enough to play Amiga games on.
i haven't tried any Amiga stuff yet, i'll give it a go in a bit.
AT - 800x600 might be enough for Amiga emulation, but it's going to suck for playing W:A :(.

Good - I can't run the blasted game, so a poor resolution might level the playing field (or at least crop the hills off the edge of the screen).

My girlfriend's uncle has a laptop he rarely uses. I'm going to see him on Friday, so I'll ask him if I'll be able to borrow it for the 20th.
Incidentally, we're now one month away from teh Get-Together, and it would be nice if we knew:
What time we're meeting,
Where exactly we're meeting (I said the entrance to The Poynt but there are, in fact, three entrances...)
What we're going to actually do.
Now Maddio and I were talking a few days ago and he's actually quite up for some bowling, but there's about 10 of us, including my girlfriend but not including anyone else people may be bringing (I think Andrew said he was bringing his brother Paul with him), so we may be split across 2 or 3 Lanes. Or something.

I don't recall saying I'd bring him. It would be a bad idea anyway since he looks exactly like you and if I can't tell the difference I don't see how Amy will. That way madness lies. I'll ask if you want.
As for where we meet, I figure all I need do is wear either my "FRODO DIES" t-shirt, or the one with a lightbulb on the front and there should be no mistaking me. (Or if I wore what I wore last Friday for Stars-in-Their-Eyes, but that would proably get me killed.)
I would suggest for the time and money it takes the more distant people to get there and back we should be looking to make the event a fairly long one, and therefore meet early. Trouble with that is that some people are too distant and can't make early. That's why mobile numbers are so useful - anyone who arrives after the main group has... coalesced... can phone one of them and find out exactly where they are.
I'd like to get the time sorted soonish, thoug - I have no idea how far in andvance tickets start to get expensive.

Well we were previously looking at an 11am meet-up, which would involve much getting-up-earliness for all concerned. I'm not sure what time the last buses, coaches, trains and so forth leave Milton Keynes either. We can assume we'll be there until 6pm at the least. Possibly. I don't know.

I will probably be getting a coach, as a certain beareded balloonist suggests I take his train first to London, take a ride on the tube to a different London station, and then to Milton Keynes from there, returning via both stations in Manchester. Now, my geography is shaky at best, but I would suggest that a simpler route exists.
If any other Leeds forummers are coming too (which I can't be bothered looking up) then they are welcome to a) come with, or b) suggest a simpler way than by coach.
Edit: Also, the National Express has a wonderfully designed website which (apart from not telling me the price of anything until the very last page) is very helpful and tells me every departure on any given day. I appear to be able to arrive and leave at any crazy time you care to mention. But I'm not getting up in time to arrive before 10:35 for anybody.

Just looked up.
Definately not getting the bus, as doing that would mean leaving Milton Keynes at 3 PM, which would suck.
Also, it's alright for some - £4 indeed.
It's gonna be £40 for me if I go with the cheapy one, but that doesn't have an early morning one (the earliest would be me arriving at 2:00 PM). Which would be smelly.

A day-return coach ticket is £20 exactly, and Huddersfield to Leeds is, what, a £1.50 bus ticket at most? Seems to me that it would be folly to use a B&B.
I was thinking more in terms of time than money.

Oh... I was going to preorder it from your little shop, but hey, if you don't want any commission, that's good too.

You can do that if you like. I've taken a look at my finances and it looksl ike I won't be buying WFUS until I get paid at the end of the month - I'll have just enough to cover the Get-Together itself, methinks.
