So [it wouldn't be] very useful.

That works for me.

[And you were there, and you were there... (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?p=326964#post326964)]

double post edit:

As we are now one week away from the Get-Together, I'm going to finalise the plan with everyone. If anyone has anything they'd like to check, or suggest, or whatever, then say so now. Or else.

We're meeting by the Point in Milton Keynes, near the entrance which faces towards the shops and that little Bus Stop area. When everyone is there (I will probably be wearing a tee-shirt with a Space Invader on it, and I might bring my ID card frmo work if all else fails) we will go bowling. I've yet to check where the bowling place is. This gives you some idea of just how organised I am.

Then we will have lunch, presumably at somewhere like Pizza Hut, where we will share some pizza and probably not be able to play any games on a laptop.

Then, I don't know, maybe we should wonder about the Shopping Centre, pointing at stuff I can't afford. Unless there is somethnig else we can do. That said, we probably shouldn't do a trmendous amount of walking for reasons I'm not entirely sure I should repeat here.

Then something else happens.

Then we go home.

If this does become an annual thing, I would like to suggest that someone else plans it next year, as I have all the organisational skills of a blind German Shephard.

you know, i just had this nutty idea of actually going there. why? because now that i checked, i CAN afford to go to UK (it costs 105 Eur going from Lisbon to London). and next week is when my tests end so i have the weekend free.
only problem is... i know NOTHING about UK. nothing, you hear? so unless someone came to pick me up at the airport i'd be lost. i don't know if i'll need a passport (though i don't think so). i know nothing about your weather (well, except that it's usually cold and rainy, it's what we learn in English classes ;)) so i wouldn't know what to wear. i also don't have any english currency. and i'd probably feel really misplaced, a portuguese tourist in the middle of UK.

other than all of that... well, there's chances i might join you guys. though it'd be cheaper if i won a "free trip to UK" but there's no chances of that anytime soon, or later even.

We're now about 6 days and some hours away from the Get-Together. If you're able to arrange a plane from Portugal to England (possibly Heathrow) and then transport from there to Milton Keynes, and also somewhere to stay, and a return flight etc. then it would be very nifty to see you there, although I expect you may be jetlagged...!

You probably will need a passport, even though we're part of the EU.

Weather this time of year is usually quite cold - bring a coat.

You'll need to get some Pounds Sterling, currency-wise, seeing as we haven't given up our currency for the Euro (yet...)

I imagine there are quite a few Portuguese tourists in Milton Keynes ;)

although I expect you may be jetlagged...

I wouldn't have thought so - Portugal is in the same timezone as us, and you only get "jetlagged" when you fly from west to east, usually over a couple of timezones.

Hmm... I'm just working out whether or not it would be worthwhile meeting up at the Station. As a downside, I don't know exactly where the station is, and I wouldn't know how to get anywhere from there if I did.

UPDATE: I am not going. Why?
I just remembered something. I am 15 years old, thus am a minor. Being a minor, I can't travel alone, I can only travel with my parents. And there is no way in hell I am bringing my parents along. I'd rather be squished by a cylinder and having my remains being used to feed many hungry vultures, than having to bring my parents along. And they probably wouldn't want to come either.

Maybe some other year, in some other O.D. Get-together ;)

If we all do that it will confuse the hell out of the... we need a name for non-ODer's. Something we can use in front of them and they won't realise. Something like... er... nope, I don't know. But we need one. I'll try and put that avatar up this afternoon before I leave Uni.

also, why would it confuse them. i doubt they really care why you went bowling and didn't announce it to the whole forum :p
it's not like the forum needs to know everything its members do. if some members went bowling together, they don't need to know when or how that was settled.

also, why would it confuse them.
They get confused easily. All we have to do is put the same thing in our signatures and they start copying it and wondering what it means (which is a dumb combination, if you ask me). I think it's short life would be the strangest part - there've been avatar trends before, but never a 48-hour one (though I don't think I could have it up for less that 65 hours --edit: so to speak).

I know this a bit sudden, but I have a bit of bad news.

Can't make it :(

Through a number of reasons (distance, money, other things happening, too many gigs coming up, and a few more) I've had to agree to not come. Otherwise, I could do nothing else all year. If I had a job, it'd be fine. If it was closer, it'd be fine. If I could drive, it'd be fine.

But it ain't! Sorry everyone, I'll make it to the next one. I'm arranging it. It's in Newcastle ;)

Squirminator2k
19 Nov 2004, 20:29
Right, Amy and I have our travel arrangements sorted and, in a sparkling turn of events, also know where the bowling place is. WHich is nice. Apparently it's in that nice big slopey building that is visible from the Point where we are meeting (pun intended) so there we go. There are also other things to do in there so the activities need not end with bowling before the Pizza stuff.

Also, as previously stated, Amy and I will have £33 between us. Once again I must apologise for our unforseen financial state which is a combination of me being hired and fired three times this year, and also I don't get paid for this month's work until the end of the month. A combination of doign some work for a chairty and begging for money (and asking to borrow money from people, which is essentially the same thing) has managed to rake us in a little bit of dosh. So don't be surprised if we don't spend an awful lot.

Next year things should be different because not only will I have stable pay, but also someone else will be arranging everything. Hopefully.

Sorry to hear you can't make it, Betong. We'll take many pictures.

AndrewTaylor, Paul.Power (possibly, we've heard nothing from hmi at all), Pooka, Worm Mad, M3ntal and SargeMcCluck. I will, of course, be fighting off an instictive urge to refer to each of these people by their Usernames but in the case of Paul and Andrew this won't really be a problem.

Well Amy and I just got back in through the door and we can both hoenstly say that we well and truly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't do an awful much other than look for the bowling place, have a brief poke-around in the market and buy Worms Forts: Under Siege (well, Liam and Andrew did - I'm hoping to get ti for Christmas as I am terminally broke still). But it was most definitely a good laugh and I'm sure all five of us are in agreement that we are definitely looking forward to a (much better organised) Get-Together next year.

Incidentally Amy and I will be moving into our own little flat thingy in January/February and we will be having a House Warming Party, so those of you who are willing and able to turn up for that (and potentially crashing at our place overnight if need be) are invited. More details once we actually know where we're going...!

Will do

And that is where, Ev comes in

I'm planning to do the get together in North America, either Where my residence is or somewhere in the states. I know that Zero and K^2 live in America, and MFAH and I live in Canada, so there's four people right there (if they don't mind doing this) I'm planning of having us play Mario Kart: DD, go to Burger King for lunch, head to the mall to deplete time and maybe a movie, you know typical teenage/adult stuff. Don't get me wrong UK'ers are welcomed as well, but you might not be able to make it, Worm Mad told me he can't come, which is a shame. Any other American forumers are welcomed too.

And yes, pictures will be taken.

SomePerson

I can only go if it's in southern California.

The problem with a western get-together is that North America is so huge and we're so spread apart. Britain is pretty small, but here we'd have to have people flying long distances. I don't think our population is dense enough. Let's take a look:

Me: south west coast
Zeor: east coast
Pikkul: east coast
Munkee: north west coast
K^2: Ohio
Ev: Somewhere in Canada (Ontario?)
Rambo: Somewhere in Canada
Angelus: north east Mexico

I'm sure there are more who live here, but that doesn't change my point - we're all far away from each other. Only a few people could make it.

But don't get me wrong - it'd be cool to have one, but it doesn't seem like it'd work so well.

He didn't come because it was too far away, he lives in Gateshead. It took me about four hours to get to MK, and Betong is at least another 2 hours North of me. Admittedly Yorkshire is a bit out of Amy and my way, but with the right planning-aheadedness (which, if Euan, Andrew and Liam remember correctly, is not my strong point) we may be able to make it...Come on Ben, if me and Andrew can make the journey to your turf, you can make it to ours ;).

But yeah, sure, why not?

Unless someone has a better suggestion. I can certainly go anywhere within 10 hours, or roughly 600 miles, of Cleveland. Anything beyond that is questionable. I don't really want to have to stop for night anywhere in between.

Did we ever tell you about the Scary Guy on the coach back to Leeds? He was scary.

Me and M3ntal were discussing web design and how nobody seems to be able to do it for toffee, and he leans over from the next-but-one seat and says he couldn't help overhearing us and he may have some software we might be interested in. He said it like it was drugs. He wouldn't tell us what it was or why we might be interested. Just got increasingly shady and suspect until we decided to decline his rather scary offer and ignore him.

I quizzed the guy about this "software" and he was extremely vague about it, said he didn't have it on him but it was back on his home machine (in Prague) and if i gave him my email address he'd get in touch. I felt like i was being headhunted by the KGB or something.

A Cessna one engine plane would need two re-fueling landings to get there, and it would take about 15 hours of flight and nearly 300 galons of fuel.

It is, but only for alcohol. We're allowed to drink soft drinks from the day we're born (but obviously the likes of Coca Cola aren't reccomended for newborn infants).

Nuts to that. "Proove" isn't already a word and at least I know it's wrong. Actually, it felt wrong as I typed it, but I glanced up and spotted all the right letters in the right order and didn't give it a second thought. I guess that'd be why.

Apparently the rather gaunt (from what I remember the word means) chap behind the bar thought you looked good for it, then, because that's the posted rule. Anyone who doens't look 21 has to prove they're 18 to buy lemonade. That's no way to run a business.

And the bar. Was. Empty.

There was us, and a guy who was 55 if he was a day (and doubtless had ID to prove it) and the probably-gaunt chap. And nobody else at all. If he'd served us, who would know, and having found out, care? Frankly I think Ben should pop back to that place in a week or two to see if it's still in business.

I've got $356 on round-trip from Philadelphia to London through Detroit (although I do have to wonder, why Detroit?), assuming that you'll be staying for eight days in late November. http://travel.priceline.com/travel/airlines/lang/en-us/fare_results_bk.asp?session_key=410011AC420011AC20 0408301730151d2401200336&plf=pcln&path=cfe
It'd cost extra to get there from your local airport though; you might want to tack on $150 as an estimate.
i now find this post fascinating because airfare has doubled in the past four years
