View Full Version : Some suggestions to make the game more friendly towards new comers to the game

1) Implement a training mission that explains how Repeat Swings (Ninja Rope) work including how it works while the rope is wrapped around 1 or more bends. This will make it much easier to understand and master the Ninja Rope without having to dumb down the rope mechanics or some other unsavory method of making the rope easier to use.

2) Have all mission dialog appear in the chat window as the player progresses through the mission, also obviously allow the player to open the chat window to review it.

1) This goes under new content which is quite rare (who would make it?). But good idea. It isn't too hard for people to work it out on their own, but this would definitely make the learning process faster/make it more clear.
2) You mean morse code messages? Also a cool idea... but how useful would this actually be? I suppose if custom missions are ever implemented (and custom morse code strings allowed) it could produce some interesting results...

Maybe I'm confusing missions from later games with ones from this game, don't missions during gameplay display messages about what to do? Or is it all explained before you start the mission? That's what I was speaking about for point #2.

And yeah I know the first idea is new content but I think it would be worth the effort, it would no doubt make the training missions a fair bit more useful in regards to teaching one how to get the most out of one of the most used items in the game. Such a mission would work well with messages being shown during the mission with a way to review it all as you progress.

Another idea would be an option added to each mission that lets you quickly watch a replay showing how to complete the mission (Not necessarily via the most effective method). Possibly make it active after failing the mission and/or getting bronze 3 times? And a perfect TAS replay made by Deadcode/Cybershadow as a reward for getting platinum/gold.

It's all explained before you start the missions, the ones in the game (the morse code messages) are usually very generic messages that occasionally do display helpful things about when earthquakes/armageddons come, etc., but never anything precise.

The TAS idea is interesting, dunno how feasible though due to Team17's reluctance of linking community sites from ingame. If the replays were bundled with the game it could work but they'd probably get out of date. Not sure whether or not I like the replay of how to complete the mission, seems too much like the ultra-annoying features in the new Mario games (but not quite as bad).

3) For a newbie who hosted a WormNET game for the first time and no one joined him, show an HTML page on exit linking to here (http://worms2d.info/Hosting_Guide) with additional infos and the question of whether he needs help. Only once per his W:A's lifetime. :p

Enable starting of ingame externally so we can write useful frontends.

writing frontends is already possible. without dedicated ingame launch a tiny bit harder, but for a frontend creator not really an obstacle

What a word, especially when it comes out of your mouth

The lobby network code is tied to the front end, so it's not as easy as that.

Yeah I was thinking of it being bundled with the game and a new interface button appearing which when clicked will play the replay. The game has backwards compatibility and the missions won't change any time soon (new missions may get added though) so replays will remain valid for eons.

With my idea for failing the mission multiple times and getting a replay, I mean for the replay to be that of the average player playing through just to give a general idea of what it is you're meant to do, watching it won't affect your medal/score.

If you get gold it rewards you with a perfect/TAS or PRO replay of the mission being completed quickly.
