Is there any way to play the W2 demo online nowadays?

No, but you can download it from here (http://www.worms2.com/main.html?page=good&area=demo&file=4). In case you mean to play the game online with other people, I don't know. Chances are no one is playing that anymore. Are the servers down anyway?

I meant playing with other people over the internet so basically I'm wondering about the server.

I uploaded the online demo version to Dream17 here (http://www.dream17.info/downloads.php?cat=4) a while ago - and by "a while ago" I mean when I still worked for Dream17, so quite a while ago.

However, I'm not even sure if the server is still active, or if it supports said demo if it is, but you may as well give it a go if you're curious. I've got the full game but haven't played it online for years.

I believe it now connects to the full versions server now. You just have to be careful of who you join as if they use something not featured in the demo it will desync.
