Other maps that look nice have about 64 colors I try copying the color table from those maps and load it onto this map I want to use but the graphics lose beauty, I want to learn a way to reduce the number of colors but retainig good looks does anybody know?

Open a png file with IrfanView, reduce the amount of colours to 64 and save the map. Sometimes you have to save the map two times but then the map looks good as does the background :)

To keep the maximum number of colours, he should reduce it to 113 colours.

But don't do this if the map is destructable (eg. mole shopper). With too many colours the background soil gets messed up, and it's hard to tell the difference between the land and the background. That's why half of the hostingbuddy (wmdb) mole shopper maps are really annoying to play on.

The most colours you can have on a mole map and still have the soil be ok is 92, with soil type Beach. Don't ask me how I figured that out, just trust me. ;)

How did you figure that out?

I usually make my maps 64 colors but I notice somebackgrounds interfere with the images on the map making it look different then what I originally intended it to look, is it ok for me to put more colors to the map to get rid of the backgrounds?

here is an online tool to automatically reduce the color pallet of a png image.

http://www.lemoda.net/png/quantize/

you will need to upload your map to an image hosting site and supply the url for it.
