I will now proceed to explain my username.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this, or, at least, what the problem is?!? I greatly enjoy playing Worms and long to play it again. I have tried compatibility mode, but that generates a response no different than this one. RRRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please install the latest update.
The 3.6.31.0 update is located here. It contains a compatibility fix for all Windows versions. Install it. (http://wa.team17.com/main.html?page=supp&area=upda&file=15)

Is that really all I have to do? No catches or anything? I spent an hour looking for my problem and found nothing, certainly not an update like that one. But apparently it works-- or will, once I update my video chip.
I'm sorry if my problem was too obvious, but I didn't know better. :o
Wow, you spent an hour looking and didn't find that? We tried so hard to spread the word. :( What more can we do? What sites did you read? Maybe we can improve.

I suppose it *should* have been obvious to actually look on the Team17 site. But no, I contented myself to searching on Google. I feel so stupid.

I'm having the same problem, only I downloaded the newest patch, and it still doesn't work? Do I have to inject it or something? I also can't find the update in program files. Any help is welcome.
Oh, by the way I'm playing the free trial version of the game. If there are no free trial version please notify me so I can uninstall. Yes I am new at this, no flaming :3
The demo version of the game is more than 10 years old and doesn't work with current versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7). You might want to just buy the game from MasterTronic (formerly Sold Out Software) (http://www.mastertronic.com/productSoldOut.asp?pid=267&productLabelID=1) or Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Worms-2-Armageddon-Pc/dp/B000E23XNA). It's pretty cheap and is updateable.

The update does not register itself anywhere, as it only updates the game's files.
While there technically is an official feature-limited Worms Armageddon demo, I guess you're actually using a time-limited trial of a downloadable version. Downloadable versions are not updateable due to DRM, see the topmost thread in this forum for details.

What is the video card specifications for W:A on Windows 7? When I run W:A I get the error:
Front-end video initialization error
** Error ** : from Graphics Subsystem , Unable to set desired video mode
(The bolded top line is the titlebar.)
This time I found out that this problem is caused by outdated or ATI graphics cards, but mine is neither.

Thank you, Lex, that was precisely the information I found. Any other suggestions?
The problem is that your video driver is refusing to go into 640×480, 8 bits per pixel mode. This is a terrible video driver. Tell your video card company.
This problem was discussed in depth in this thread: http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42587
A WormKit module was provided by CyberShadow as a last resort. It forces the frontend to run in 800×600 mode.

I have ATI Radeon HD 4200, should that work?
I don't know. Is 640×480@8bpp listed in your driver's video modes?

Yes, it is. I don't know what would be the problem here. This is a very up-to-date video driver and I am assured there is NOTHING wrong with it.
Is the solution linked in the thread linked 4 posts above this acceptable?

Okay, so I'm supposed to install WormKit and then add CyberShadow's module to the WA folder? I tried that but it didn't work (it gave me the same error.) But I'm probably doing it wrong again.
You're supposed to run WormKit.exe after you've done that, not WA.exe. That may be it.

Nope, I ran WormKit.exe. It gives me the exact same error.

If you select 640x480 256 colour in windows does it work or fail to change res there too? I've had PCs where it lists them even though the monitor can't use them...
In your position, I'd try all my video driver's scaler settings.
In my NVIDIA Control Panel, the scaler settings are listed as follows. When using a resolution lower than my display's native resolution...
Use NVIDIA scalingUse NVIDIA scaling with fixed-aspect ratioUse my display's built-in scalingDo not scaleMy personal preference in general here is "Use my display's built-in scaling", which causes the video card to send the exact (640×480) video size to my display. All 3 other options cause the video card to send a 1920×1200 (in my case) image to my display, causing my display's hardware scaler to be useless. I prefer to free my video card's processing power for other things, too.
This is a farfetched suggestion that I doubt will help, but you never know what weird things can help in situations like this.

Plutonic, yes, my monitor can switch to that video mode, but WA still fails.
Lex, I'll try that, but I don't know how to get to the NVIDIA control panel.
I have ATI Radeon HD 4200, should that work?
Lex, I'll try that, but I don't know how to get to the NVIDIA control panel.
You can't, until You have NVIDIA card.
ATI surely has similar options in its configurator. Just figure out how to get to your ATI video card driver settings then take a look around at the settings. There's bound to be a selection of scaler settings.
Once again, remember that this is extremely farfetched and probably won't fix your problem.
