Hello,

I bought a netbook recently and transferred over the image file (from the purchased disc :p) from my old desktop, but when I try running the game, it says "Error from graphics subsystem error - unable to set desired video mode." I checked the troubleshooting FAQ, searched the forum, and followed the instructions in this thread (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42144), and my netbook doesn't have a mode that starts with "640 by 480, 256 colors" :(

Is using a virtual machine the only option I have left?

Since you've bought it recently, try updating the drivers if you already haven't.

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I tried updating the video driver and it says it already has the latest version :(

I'm guessing this is something that can't be fixed easily since netbooks have tiny screens / weird resolutions

Right-click your WA.exe and under Properties, Compatibility, try running it in 640x480 and 256 colours. Hope that helps. :P

Scrub555, what video adapter does your netbook use? To find out, click the start menu button in the bottom-left corner of your screen, right click "Computer", then click "Manage". When the window pops up, click "Device Manager" in the left panel. In the right panel, click the plus ("+") symbol next to "Display adapters". Attached is an image displaying what it looks like on my computer.

Don't try updating drivers via Windows' driver update interface. It doesn't work. The best method to update the driver for your display adapter is to find the manufacturer's website, locate the driver downloads (usually in a "Support" -> "Downloads" or "Drivers" section), locate your display adapter's model (as found above), then download and install the driver with the downloaded executable. Also don't use weird third-party sites which advertise drivers for your product.

My netbook uses Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150. I followed your instructions and went on the Toshiba website, found the latest display driver, and saw that I have the current version, but that the release date was behind a few days, so I downloaded and installed it, but it still gives me the same error when I try to launch WA.

This is a known problem with some graphics cards on Vista, and one graphics card (the GMA-500 (Poulsbo)) on XP, and there isn't much you can do about it apart from pestering Intel for a driver update. Which operating system are you running? I don't believe you mentioned.

Oops, Windows 7 Starter.

Hmm, I didn't realise the problem extended to Windows 7 as well (though it is logical that it would). I'll correct the wiki page...

CyberShadow help please? :(

Well, there is no simple solution for this problem - W:A requires a video screen mode that your driver / adapter simply doesn't support. I could write a WormKit module which forces a higher screen resolution... but first, does your adapter support higher resolutions at the same colour depth (256 colours)?

Yeah, 800x600 and 1024x600

OK, give the attached module a try. It minimizes the game once on start for me, but otherwise works fine - just don't click in the black area. It should work with W:A 3.6.30.0+. Source code is in the usual place (https://github.com/CyberShadow/WormKit/blob/master/ForceFrontendResolution/wkForceFrontendResolution.dpr).

The file I posted is a WormKit (http://worms.thecybershadow.net/wormkit/) module. You have to unpack WormKit and said file to your W:A directory, then edit your W:A shortcut to run WormKit instead of WA.exe.

first of all thanks for your reply!
I unrar the wormkit to the WA directory...I also put in the same directory the file .dll you upload here, but when I start wormkit it gives me "fatal error"!
I run it in compatibility mode with XP, but it doesn't work:(

maybe I'm doing something wrong..

Please post the entire error message. "Fatal error" could mean anything.

I updated the game and it works!!!

Is there any way to play it fullscreen, without the black area on thea right and below?

Yes, but your computer does not support that screen mode. Hence the workaround in the form of the WormKit module you installed. Note that this is only regarding the front end, you can choose any resolution for the game.

infact during the game the screen fit perfectly, it's only a menu problem!

perfect thanks a lot!!:D

Maybe I'm off-topic, but was this problem related to this?

(If yes, I guess it is the time to mention this in the FAQ.)

No. These problems are unrelated.

CyberShadow

No, Explorer. The WormKit module I posted makes the front end run at the 800×600 resolution, which causes black areas below and to the right of the front end.

Time for me to revive this thread.

When I run Worms Armageddon while my laptop is connected to my HDTV via HDMI cable, the game throws up the "Unable to set desired video mode" error, even with this WormKit module. Is there perhaps a way to force the frontend to run at a resultion greater than 1024x768?

I'm using the Steam build of Worms Armageddon, incidentally.

You may want to check this (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?p=762512#post762512)

but first make sure you're using WormKitDS (http://worms2d.info/WormKitDS) as it's the only one which works on Steam. (normal WormKit.exe doesn't load modules due to double-launch forced by Steam)

also there's a windowed mode (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=57737)

don't listen to GreeN as the module works with any app and version.
