View Full Version : Newcomer's decision - WA or WR?
Hey, I'm brand new here.
I've done a lot of research on the worms genre, and have concluded that either WA or WR would be the best one to get. My problem is that I don't know which one to get. I know that a lot of people don't like WR much because of missing things that they liked in previous worms games, but things like that don't bother me, since i haven't played any of the worms games. I want my decision to be based on the features of the game.
Could anyone help me by telling me which would be better to start with? It should be based on facts, and maybe a bit of opinion, but don't base it all on opinion please. I would like to get into the worms series, but i simply dont know where to start. :/
WA all the way. Worms Reloaded has nothing on it.
For starting with, I'd say hands-down W:A's singleplayer is far better. WR's singleplayer missions are complete pants.
In regards to regular matches and multiplayer, it's... a bit of a toss-up. WR is more balanced, much better graphics, and has (arguably) better weapons, but it's also very buggy. WA, because of constant patching, has a lot, lot more smaller features and a whole lot less bugs.
If you hadn't said it was your first game I'd say WA straight off. But since you're a new player all those extra features might just go over your head.
Also, there's price. WR is far more expensive than WA too, don't forget.

It really depends on what you prefer. If you want fancy graphics, hats and modern weapons, if you don't mind the horrid amount of bugs and inconsistent gameplay, not to mention the boring campaign and the casual and inactive community, AND you don't mind spending $15 bucks on it, go with Reloaded.
If you want a strategy game that's easy to get into, quite addicting, but very hard to master, go with WA. If you want to play online you should expect a long-standing and versatile community full of annoying newbies and godlike veterans (and everything in-between). I've met a lot of cool people on WormNet, but you have to keep in mind that it's a game that's over a decade old. You also have to find a way to buy it, too.
I'll vote for Armageddon simply because it's the better game, but ultimately it's up to you to decide.
So, so far it seems as though wa is more of a complete game, with more features at the cost of less balance and lesser graphics. Wr isn't as functional (bugs), but is easier to pick up, has nice graphics, and is a more balanced game.
Honestly, I'm not too concerned about the graphics, and I am a fast learner. I suppose wa is the one I will go with. It seems a shame that a very old game is better than a new version, but sometimes these things happen.

W:R ain't that bugged anymore.
When it had just been released, it was, unfortunately, quite buggy. Though they fixed a lot of bugs, and they are still frequently updating the game.
They are even adding new missions, hats and some other stuff.
I'd still go for Reloaded.

The game is only as balanced as the schemes and options you're using. The default and popular schemes are pretty balanced actually.
Only when it comes to super weapons, you might get an imbalance, but IMO, this is what makes any Worms games fun.
If you want to play competitively, you have to finetune your schemes and omit any overpowered or too easily used (super)weapons, though.
"Lesser graphics" isn't really a counter argument.
Just look at Minecraft, with it's early 1990s low-res graphics and its over 600,000 paying users. :)
Besides, with WA's beta updates, you can crank up the screen resolution to FullHD+ values and widescreen aspect ratios.
I thought I could throw my 5 cents in here, too :p
I only want to mention the online content, both W:R and W:A have (dis)advantages there.
First, W:A has a great community. There are people thinking of new schemes all day and night, modders, map/scheme creators etc. On the other hand, newbies have a hard time at getting along there. You get kicked from every second lobby if you don't know the rules and there ain't much people who bother explaining them. You can still read about the rules on Worms2d.info, IIRC.
W:R is much more beginner-friendly, but - and this goes to minus :p - this is due to most people there are beginners, the community isn't that great yet. This doesn't mean there's no community at all though. Competitions, map designers, clans and modes like the famous shoppa are already up.
My personal opinion anyway: Go get W:A. You can't join the wormy fun without ever having played an old school Worms. That's nearly a crime :D

That's all true, but that being said W:R has more balanced weapons than W:A. 50% more, under what I personally consider balanced. One of the big beefs I had about W:A is that "loads of weapons" is something of a misnomer if you want to play properly.
I still prefer WA over WR myself though, but I'm certainly not new to the series.

Are you telling me you wouldn't want to play a Minecraft with realistic graphics? :D
Are you telling me you wouldn't want to play a Minecraft with realistic graphics? :D
Yes.
Definitely not as realistic as modern 3D engines can achieve.
Maybe some cell-shaded comic style, but surely not some glossy, filtered, photo-realistic textured game.
Even now with some high-res texture mods the game looks worse, because there's only one texture for an infinite amount of tiled blocks to make up the terrain.

I already bought both games. Well I got WA with some gaming magazine. It's really hard for newbie to start playing online, even considering the fact that I play Worms since 1995 or 6. Online communities have their own habits and many things are "obvious", but necessarily for such a players like me. Is there any site where I can find all games/schemes explained and how to start games using hosting buddy etc?
WR is much easier to start, but it seems that WA is better option for a long run me thinks.

Haven't you ever visited the Worms Knowledge Base? Here's everything you'd need to know about WA. (http://worms2d.info/Worms_Armageddon)

Sure, didn't help me when my English was even worse back then.
For player's who aren't native speakers of English it's still quite hard. I didn't play much online for that reason.

playing armageddon is like this you must first play with yourself in multi player so know the stuff then watch some videos and download some replays and .... also you can find some friends that play the game good even i will be happy to play with you;) my mail is banditking2010@hotmail.com contact me when you wonna play
It is true that it`s very hard for new players to game online on wa. People host and play specific schemes, and most of the hosts requires that you know the rules. There`s also a bunch of league games being played, where you are kicked before you even get into the game.
If I were you "Me", I`d play the game offline for a while just to understand and learn the very basic of worms. Then you can download the schemes, maps for these schemes, set yourself into the rules of each scheme, and see which ones you like. Also watching some games online helps (people dont mind spectators).
WA is an old game, and I`m glad there`s still new players trying to start playing the game online. WA is very active now, but many of the new players in recent years came from WWP (which is dead online now), where they had the chance to develope themselves in a much easier way then WA.
Anyway, I can gladly help you out getting into the game in the beginning. You progress fast when it comes to skills, and at one point you wont be kicked from games. You can find me on Wormnet, my nick is CrAzY`TDC, send me a PM on team17 forums or contact me at the current league, which you should also check out: www.tus-wa.com. I must warn you though, once you get addicted to Worms, there is no way out! Some of the members have played since the very beginning of WA, but the majority of the community are new players.
Well, i can tell you, i have bought and received WA, and have played it. So far, only offline. (as suggested, to improve abilities before online.) It is very fun, and i like the single player's integration of both combat and puzzles (level 9 took a while :s ). Later when i decide to play online, i will take you up on your offers (xCrazyx and bandito), hopefully i can become familiar with the rules faster with some help :).
Talk to you guys lator!
I'm currently very busy. I will give WA chance soon.:)
I'm so glad to hear it. Welcome to enlightenment.

The hidden but unmistakeable animosity towards Worms Reloaded in some of the posts here sure starts annoying me.

Maybe because 86.67% of the people who decided to vote think WA's much better than Reloaded? (or at least, better for a person new to Worms)

Wasn't it you who started a thread saying Reloaded is the worst Worms ever?
No, I really don't need an answer to that.
^ indeed
Check the steam forums m8, WR is bugged as hell.
Even if the game wasnt bugged, it still wouldnt come close to being better than WA. WA is a better game in every single department, there really is no contest.
Anyone who voted for WR is just straight up wrong.
The hidden but unmistakeable animosity towards Worms Reloaded in some of the posts here sure starts annoying me.
It's not that they don't like WR, it's just that W:A is like a religion to them!
W:A is a religion to them!
W:A is their religion!

That thread was about the incredible high amount of bugs in WR, but now that Team17 fixed most of them it's a pretty good game isn't it.

Though, I've always thought it was.
W:R is good when you call few friends and play few rounds.

Worms Reloaded is a pretty solid game, for all intents and considerations. They fixed most of the horrid bugs now (Most of which were people having really outdated versions of directX installed) and they're adding features.
So yeah, I don't really understand the hate beyond "We're a hardcore fanbase who have something we like and because this is different it is beneath us!"
Not like WR existing suddenly makes WA not exist.

I really have no idea what people are talking about? Reloaded IS Armeggedon but with more features...(bugs, online community aside). It's a port with "extended" experience - turning off names, worm selecting add more stratigy and better view of worms. You can remap controls to whatever.
So what does W:A have that Reloaded doesn't? How is the SP experience different?
Have you played Armageddon?
W:A has different missions (and frankly, better) than Reloaded.
It has the ability to play with more teams, more worms per team. You can turn off names and HP optionally during gameplay, you can also turn off background terrain to not get in the way of your aim.
You can make custom graves, soundbanks and victory music.
Did I mention the game is almost lag free and you can have more teams assigned to one player during online (so my sister can play without the need for me to buy another copy)
There are full game replays!
Schemes can be easily customized because of better user interface.
Every detail can be changed:
weapon power
crate frequency by type
crate contents frequency and availability
health crate power
various modifiers (like blood, etc.)
Anyways, Reloaded isn't bad. But definitely is worse than Armageddon.
What I recommend is getting both or just Reloaded to show support for Team 17 and maybe they will make new Worms as good as Armageddon is.

Oh sorry, I thought it was Worms 2 Armeggedon vs Worms Reloaded. Worms (1) Armeggedon is of course better than Reloaded. :p
W:A has different missions (and frankly, better) than Reloaded.
Not like anybody really cares for the missions... it's a multiplayer game. But yea, singleplayer is somewhat better in W:A.
You can turn off names and HP optionally during gameplay,
...and so you can in Reloaded,
you can also turn off background terrain to not get in the way of your aim.
Pretty much useless. This feature only exists because in the Worms 2 days some computers might were having trouble or graphic problems with desplaying the backgrounds. The backgrounds, by the way, look boring and empty (yes, W:A's graphics ain't up-to-date, big shock) in W:A anyway.
You can make custom graves, soundbanks and victory music.
There are custom soundbanks in Reloaded, too. Maybe a victory music wouldn't be a bad idea for Reloaded, but other player's wouldn't hear it online (and neither the soundbanks). Meh, but at least there are victory dances!
Did I mention the game is almost lag free
I was having massive lag and match crashing problems in W:A before I got the new access point (yea, it just depends on the connection, that goes for both W:A and W:R). Ironically, I had way less problems with W:R, but now I have a new access point anyhow.
and you can have more teams assigned to one player during online (so my sister can play without the need for me to buy another copy)
I so want that for Reloaded, that's true. (However some players abused this option to cheat...)
There are full game replays!
want that for Reloaded as well!
Schemes can be easily customized because of better user interface.
Every detail can be changed:
weapon power
crate frequency by type
crate contents frequency and availability
health crate power
various modifiers (like blood, etc.)
While more customisation wouldn't hurt, it's not essential at all. Too much customised schemes could be VERY annoying in online games, too, as only the host was aware of all the different tweaks he used.
"Random player: What's up with the mine? It only damaged that worm with 20 hps!"
"Host: Whoops, sorry, forgot to mention that :P"
"Random player: >:C"
Anyways, Reloaded isn't bad. But definitely is worse than Armageddon.
Honestly, you can't really say so. W:A and W:R differ a lot from each other, just look up all (dis)advantages and decide for yourself which game you prefer.
I like both almost equally. It's 2D Worms after all! I wanted even to buy a copy for my sister so she can play over the net with me and other friends, unfortunately her laptop is unable to run the game.
Worms: Reloaded is definitely the next-gen 2D Worms to go with. As W:A was part of the 2nd generation Worms, W:R makes a new gen start.

the question is "Which worms game should i start? ".....I say worms reloaded....
WA is better than WR in almost any way, I just played WR for about 2 weeks and then dropped it and returned to WA again......but it isnt "the best game to start"....
Nowadays, in WA, almost all the comunity knows how to play the game....its weird to find "a complete noob" there...on the other hand WR is more "noob friendly" in my opinion....
In WA there are more Custom schemes than normal schemes online....most of the games are Shoopa,Hysteria,Fly,etc.....things you cant play if you never played online before....

If you are new to worms then you should start out in W:R to get a feel and understanding for the game before stepping into W:A, where you will encounter people who have been playing the game for many years and have a low tolerance to noobs.
