View Full Version : MnP Map Development - Scurvy

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Well MnP is finally navigating into the deep blue waters of the Carribean. We have long planned on creating a fort style map that involved two Galleons from the 1600s (?) and have finally gotten around to it.
Actually, the idea has evolved a bit, and will most likely be a Pirate ship off the coast from an old island fort, but the fort style will still be there. The biggest issue I think we will have with this one will be balancing. The ship sure looks like it might not be a match for that fort on dry land. But we'll see.
It will give us an opportunity to create some nice coral reefs and sea fixtures (for Worms Reloaded only), and it seems that finally my long abandoned MnP map revolving around a Goonies character - One-Eyed Willy - is finally going to see the light of day. In fact, I'm planning on centering the story of this map around Mr. One-Eyed Willy himself and his unending quest for gold.
It won't make sense, but who cares! We're talking worm bones here people!!!
And with that said, here is the first development screenshot of the up and coming MnP map - Scurvy.

I really wish Team17 to include the pirates theme from W:OW2...

But the worms in Worms have always had bones. It's in-universe.

Depends. Since it's rather unimportant if they have bones or not, you have a lot of artistic space there, thus you can both call them spineless (wordplay, of course) and draw dead worms' bones like in this map at the same time.

Maybe it's just the pirate worms that have bones?
Worms are, in some way, cartoons....in the world of cartoons the character's body is relative....if the comedy requires that the worms must have bones....they have bones, if not, they dont have.....just like the example that Thurbo posted above....
Sry about my bad english
One of them MUST be filled with beer! I completely and utterly refuse to accept that you can do this for a Team17 game without having a galleon of beer involved!

You want an entire Galleon of beer???
You want an entire Galleon of beer???
Damn sure we do!
It's a running gag that I kept going over the years, based on a typo by Plasma:

Perfectly matched my even older beer running gags about Teamsters, pubs & beer guzzling.
(The guzzling being an allusion to Spadge's old forum title "Beer guzzler". ;))

Hahah! OK, consider me up to speed now.
Well, seeing as how Pirates are kinda known for drinking rum... yo, ho, ho and what not... I doubt you will be seeing any beer on this Galleon. Plenty of rum though...
Actually, the beer fixation got me thinking about another Family Feud style map that I could do in the future - a fort vs fort map based on a street in Dublin. Two Irish bars firing bazookas across the street at each other. I could even work in a small sewage system so that there would be access to the other fort via underground passages.
Sound like something we should do, or would it be too much like Famil Feud (http://www.mnpp.net/?p=47) and a waste of time?
I was also consdering an Irish mafia vs the Italian mafia war in a slice of old Chicago or New York - same idea as above, just different setting.
I can't really see a pub war working out so well in your style. In a Team17 cartoony slightly-surreal style, it'd work, but yours is just too static and serious for something like that.
The mafia war thing does sound great though! You should really do that one!
And if you played more Pokemon you might know why I'm so fond of it. =P

I love the idea! :D

Well something like the Mafia / Pub thing is definitely going to happen. At this point on my personal map schedule, I'd say it is 3 maps away (including itself and Scurvy). I have one I am doing between the two that I can't wait to get started on.
But hey! Here is another update for Scurvy. I had to downsize the ship by 50% for this screenshot because people are starting to take my work. Yeah... I said it. I've started registering our artwork using Creative Licenses just so there won't be any misunderstandings. ;)
Anyway, I have the entire ship nearly finished, although it has yet to fully undergo the detailing that I usually give the map at the end. So it may still change a bit. What do you think?

I'd like to see you making the sea a little deeper (i.e. putting the ship a few inches up), or would the ship be too tall for the map limits then?

Yea - did you ever think about making a cartoony map like that? For instance, you know, buildings in T17 maps usually look like you'd watch them using a fisheye lens (http://www.webarts.net/stuff/fisheye/pics/crop_1.jpg) :D

Yeah I can't really make the sea any deeper without simply dropping it off entirely - and I really wanted to have some sand down there for the WR players. Map size does not allow me to raise the boat even a pixel higher. I could sacrifice some room INSIDE the boat, but I'd rather not since it's cramped enough as it is.
We have never really been into the cartoony look. I think AF1 is about as cartoony as we have ever gotten, and that is mainly because Jeremy did that one entirely on his own. We've always thought that Team17 pretty much had that style taken care of, so why not stick with our own? So yeah, our style is fairly structural, not so much cartoony, but we do use cell shading to keep things nice and clear.
Yea... I really admire the style of Worms tho and one of my fav comic series (http://static.4players.de/premium/ContentImage/ea/6b/2019-bild.jpg) uses a similar one, so I use it myself, too :P
Apart from that, it really is fun drawing objects in a surreal, twisted look. It looks pretty interesting, too.

I certainly agree.

Well I have another update for Scurvy. This screenshot comes from the "beach and dock" section. Having a lot of fun manipulating the coastline and sands both underwater and above. Oh! And I finally got to do a palm tree!
Next up... the fort.

I guess this map's gonna be great :p
Btw, wouldn't it look great to have water reflections on the sand, even though they'd be motionless?

Thanks Thurbo! Oh man, I actually saw someone do exactly that on Wormgineers. I thought "man that looks cool," but then realized the same thing. The ripples don't move.
Hey! Team17 should just "easily implement" a reflection effect!
Yes... there's been another reflection effect taken out in W:R... I wonder why because I loved it!
Pay attention to the landscape underwater (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vE9cFJBqn4);)
But even without any motion (http://i597.photobucket.com/albums/tt52/Thurbo1/ScreenshotUnderwater.png?t=1278957118) it doesn't look that bad :p

Oh my!
It seems that you come up with a new removed feature everyday. :(

True.
With a bit of color distortion into the blueish.

Say, does anyone else think that actually looks really jarring or out of place? At least compared to the still-colour landscape, anyway.
It'd work great on detailed maps like MnP ones, yes, but they're really a very small minority.
