I CHALLENGE YOU ALL TO MORTAL KOMBAT.
I actually have a lot of free time nowadays, so I figure I'll organize this thing.
Sign up, I'll find a way to randomize the match-ups, we'll discuss the proper timing for this things, then I'll start a new thread with all the relevant information and update that with results.
This game does not save replays nor does it allow spectators, but I trust you guys to post the correct results for each match. Unless someone who can record games via something like fraps wants to volunteer as the official cameraman, join each game, intentionally drown three worms and neatly hide the last one, surrender after one of the other two gets eliminated and then upload the video on youtube, but honestly that's just too damn complicated. I would do it but I can barely get the game to run well at the lowest resolution... :p
We also need to decide whether it'll be a single match per round or two out of three, what scheme it'll be, and any other general rules you may like for this thing.
So anyway, SING UP and discuss.
edit: Yes, sing, and then SIGN UP.

I bought it early to get the TF2 hat, even though the Mac version isn't out yet and god only knows when it will.
...Hopefully Team17 will make the purchase transfer over when they release the Mac version. :-\
And I haven't played TF2 in ages, not even to claim said hat, so clearly money WELL SPENT.

Scheme: I suggest Standard. It's versatile, and fun.
Map: Random maps should be fine, but maybe we should settle for a single type of map. I'm not a huge fan of tall island maps for example, and tall cavern maps can be very imbalanced. What would you all suggest?
Tournament: Well, we have 12 people now. To make it work we would have to split it in four groups of three players each, then whoever comes on top of the group moves to semifinals, or the two people on top of each group could move to quarter finals. :p If we can get four more people then we can just keep pairing winners until we reach the final match. Also, what do you all prefer: one game per match, or two out of three?
Squirminator2k

Standard is good.

12 Sep 2010, 23:41
To all those on Mac: it runs fine on Boot Camp on my old iBook.
I'll agree with Standard, yeah. As for map types, hrmm. Maybe it'd be better to standardize something. Either that or just go with luck-of-the-draw and make it 2 or 3 rounds or something.
Squirminator2k

One round is best. Or maybe it isn't.

I agree with bonz, Island maps only would be the best option as it allows the use of airstrikes.
So that would be: Standard scheme, random island maps, and three rounds per match-up. Anyone disagrees?

Go with wormery maps, mandatory hat-wearing, 17 rounds per match-up because Team17, and every time you lose a worm, you have to take a shot of whiskey.
Also, the only weapon allowed should be the bowling ball.

I can't think of a proper way to set this up with twelve people. :-/
The only way that comes to mind is an elimination phase, but would need different rules. Either a) Starting with three player games, and either the one or two comming on top passing to the next round, which can be really unfair and would probably require more than three rounds to determine a winner or b) splitting into groups, but then there's only two options: groups of three, again with either one or two people passing to the next round(but then there's only three matches per group and thus the possibility of all players getting a victory each and the group being tied, which would then require a points system of sorts to determine who goes through), or two groups of six, and have either four or two people per group passing to the next phase.
Any ideas? :p
We could as a last resort invite outsiders into the tournament. :p
Akuryou13
15 Sep 2010, 04:08
A: the final 3 all play in one big game, first person to 3 victories.
B: Each of those 3 plays the other 2 in 3 games each, the person with the most victories among those games is declared winner. if tied, play another game.
C: Wildcard. a person at random who's already lost is added as a fourth contestant in the semi-final rounds.
MtlAngelus
15 Sep 2010, 04:43
I also had a similar idea to that. Basically, do a double elimination tourmanent, and the three top people resulting from the looser matches would play a three player game, and whoever wins that game gets to face one of the three finalists from the "winners" section. :p
Here's a nice graph if what I just said doesn't make much sense. :p
This is for me the best solution, but it also considerably increases the number of matches played, which in turn could increment the difficulty to set up matches between people not in the same continent or with busy schedules. :p

I'm pretty certain you cannot add ai teams when playing online. :(
Nope, you can't.
Neither can you add 2 teams from one player, although BillT17 suggest that as a way to get around the 4-player limit. :(
Uuhh, I think it should remain 1 vs 1 the whole tournament. Three player FFA will only result in two players picking a loser and taking that person out first. :p
And I prefer 3 rounds per match.
Won't groups of three work if we add some kind Tie Breaker points? Say you get a point for every worm you have left when the round ends. And if that fails play more rounds. Though this really requires both players to pay attention to worm count, and a spectator would be best.
Oh yeah, I just remembered you can share what's on your monitor using Skype's video conversation. We could use that for spectating if it doesn't cause to much lag.

I agree with three player matches not being the best option, but I think having just a single three player match on a double elimination tournament to define the fourth finalist should be fine. I wouldn't want to rely on a points system as it can be a bit too random for my tastes. Playing more rounds could be troublesome as well, to keep it fair you would have to remake all three matches, until one player manages to win two of them, that could take a while and it could also be hard to set up properly if the people involved do not have too much time or live in very different regions.
MtlAngelus
17 Sep 2010, 03:11
Can we get a vote going on here? I need to know if the majority of you is ok with the double elimination set-up, or if you would rather go for initial three player matches to reduce the complexity of the whole thing. :p
Or, as I said, invite outsiders or people that have not signed up yet. I've seen Kjatte around and I'm pretty certain he has the game, and I'm sure there are outsiders worth playing against.
Not in a particular rush to get this started tho, the game has become a crashfest for me since the latest update. :-/

I'm fine with the double-elimination thing. not as much the 3-player matches as that's a little.....manipulatable. not that I imagine anyone here would stack a match against anyone else, honestly, but I'd rather just avoid the whole situation.

Excellent, double elimination it is. Also, unless somebody complains, I'm going to do random match-ups for the whole tournament, instead of doing a position based one. That way, you won't know who you might have to play agaisnt if you pass to the next set of games. If anyone disagrees with this, let me know.
The next step now is randomizing the first set of matches. I trust you all so I don't mind who gets to do it and what technique is used, so I'll let you guys decide who gets to do it and what technique should be used. ;)
