Here's a little video which illustrates the highlights of every W:A Beta update until now (and even of the near future ;) ).
Did you know all there is about W:A Betas? Chances are you'll find out something new :)

The narrator honey-flavored voice is Cueshark's ("I'm a Noob"). Kudos to him.

May I have permission to publish this video file on my website? I was JUST thinking of doing an article about the Worms Armageddon beta updates and this is pretty much perfect.

On top of that, check out that news box at 5:52. This may be just to show the kind of news that will go in that box but to me it looks like "W:A 4.0 to hit Steam"

Guys, the dates of the "news" are in the future - and not even OutofOrder can predict the future ;)

Translation: OutofOrder predicted that? Goddamnit, I hate that jerk! Well, I guess I could move my planned release date forward a day...

It's a shame that even with confirmation that they are predictions, people will still take it as fact.

That said, seeing the new features in action is pretty cool. Can't wait :)

Would Steam give Worms: Armageddon any benefits?

CyberShadow
5 Sep 2010, 23:38
It would make W:A accessible to everyone who can't or doesn't want to get W:A on a physical CD.

I'd quote mr. Neil Young here: "keep on rockin' in the free world!" ;)

It would make W:A accessible to everyone who can't or doesn't want to get W:A on a physical CD.
It would also drastically increase the player counts, since the Steam community has their credit cards loose and have an itchy trigger purchase finger.

Also, it could to some extent reduce piracy, if Steam's VAC system is properly implemented.
As opposed to the current CD version with it's 10 year old copy protection (read: zero copyprotection these days).
great, you made me install W:A again. ;)
There he is again.
Worms are an incurable addiction. :D

It would make W:A accessible to everyone who can't or doesn't want to get W:A on a physical CD.

And that would be awesome. The only way i can buy W:A is by shipment... and i don't trust shipment :(

I never download games, I always prefer to have a hard copy on disc. That way I don't have to spend the whole day downloading the game when I want to install it. Not to mention you get a nice box and instruction manual with the actual CD!

With that said, I'm probably going to buy a new copy of WA since my original CD shattered long, long ago within the foul DVD drive of my old "Time" manufactured computer. I can still recall the painful events on that day, exactly as they occurred. There was even a blue screen of death!
The DVD drive was also ruined and wouldn't open or even be identified by Windows.
A few months later, my friend got the game and I copied his CD as the game was less than 2 years old and still £25+ which would have cost me 13 weeks of pocket money to buy something that I already owned but had been wrongly taken from me.
I still have the box and instruction manual, although the front cover is missing.

Anyway, according to that video, the game was said to have stability problems and would crash. But to this day I can not recall a single crash I have had with the game. Were they referring to stability on modern operating systems? Although this was mentioned, it was said after the general stability section, within in its own section.

Should W:A 4.0 DO go up on Steam, let's just say that if they (Valve) implement VAC, I will steal Gabe Newell's cake.

CyberShadow

Why would W:A need VAC?

Why would W:A need VAC?
Remind me again why the rankings were removed.

Also, are you even able to implement VAC in non-Valve games?

CyberShadow
9 Sep 2010, 00:56
It was possible to easily cheat the rankings because the system was poorly designed. It's possible to design a secure ranking system without relying on intrusive software like VAC.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valve_Anti-Cheat), VAC has been used in many non-Valve games.

VAC can be used by any game that implements steamworks.

It could also, if used, make Wormkit unusable, though the developer has full control over when VAC checks are done, so it could be done only in ranked games, though then you would have to remember to disable wormkit if you didnt want to get VAC-banned in ranked.

I will never install anything like VAC.

Plutonic
9 Sep 2010, 17:20
VAC is not a program, it is part of the steamworks API, are you saying you will never buy a game that has any antihack protection, even if it is part of the game code itself?

pisto
9 Sep 2010, 17:41
I won't install anything that has any global effect on my pc (correct me if VAC doesn't have any). For example, something like wkCinusKick which doesn't run if you have a debbugger running (even if it's not attached to the program itself).

And yes, almost half of what I enjoy in worms is trying to extend its capabilities. So I won't buy a worms that doesn't allow me to do it.

VAC doesn't affect anything other than the game it is installed in. It would however, in most cases, stop you being able to modify the game code in RAM. Personally I don't think adding VAC to WA would be a good idea, a combination of CEG and whatever security can be built into WA and the server backend would be good enough.

Last I heard, WR doesn't use VAC either.

Muzer

How does it go about doing that, out of interest? Does it actually checksum the RAM or something? If it does it by blocking Windows calls, couldn't you get around it by just using Linux and editting the RAM from there?

CyberShadow

Plutonic

CEG: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051534/a-closer-look-valve-ceg

I just realised that VAC comes in two parts so yes, it can ban you for modifications to your EXE or for running known cheat programs running at the same time. :(
