WAIT! BEFORE WE BEGIN... TIME FOR A QUICK HISTORY LESSON
Did you know that in the original Worms and WormsDC Andy Davidson provided the voice for the English speechbank? It's true! This original speechbank only appears in Worms, Worms Utd. and Worms: The Director's Cut (with some speech used for the Worms table in Addiction Pinball).
The speechbank was never used again, and someone else recorded the English speechbank for Worms 2 onwards. In fact the "Classic" speechbank seen in Worms Reloaded is, in actual fact, from Worms 3D, making one of the newest speechbanks in the game.
OUR LIVES ARE MEANINGLESS
With the original speechbank never having survived past the first generation, it's understandable you may be feeling a little sad, or perhaps even depressed.
QUICKLY, HAND ME THAT DISCOUNT 500-PILL BOTTLE OF ASPRIN!
Overdosing on Aspirin is a terrible way to commit suicide. You could just jump in front of a train instead! But don't do that. It'd be easier and safer to download the ORIGINAL ENGLISH SPEECHBANK, handily converted from the original Amiga IFF audio files for use in Worms 2, Worms Armageddon and Worms World Party!
What's more, two versions of the speechbank are available. Worms: The Director's Cut used different takes for the FireBall and DragonPunch sound files that tread the line of copyright infringement. But hey, only 5,000 people bought Worms: The Director's Cut, so Capcom probably don't even care!
SWEET MOTHER OF ALL THINGS GOOD AND STURDY! HOW MUCH DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS PRIVILEGE?
That's the thing! I can't legally sell this speechbank because it's not my work. In fact distributing it in any way, shape or form is legally dubious as it is! But I'm doing it anyway in the hopes that Team17's legal department don't hunt me down, rip open my stomach and fling my entrails around like confetti.
So here they are:
["Worms" English speechbank (http://worms.benpaddon.com/speech/classic.zip)] - .zip file, 320KB
["Worms: The Director's Cut" English speechbank (http://worms.benpaddon.com/speech/classicDC.zip)] - .zip file, 320KB
HELP! I'M A SIMPLETON WHO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO OPERATE A COMPUTER!
That's okay, the instructions are so simple even an Activision CEO could follow them!
Download the speechbank you want. In fact if you like you can download them both without any conflicts!
The zip file will open in your compression program of choice. Simply click "extract" and browse to your W2/WA/WWP folder and go to user\speech\
Extract! You DON'T need to create a new folder - a folder called "Classic" or "Classic - Director's Cut" will be created and the new speechbank will be installed.
Alternatively if you don't have any file compression software installed, the file will open in Windows, which will present you with a browser window containing a folder called "Classic" or "Classic - Director's Cut". Simply drag this folder to your user\speech\ folder.
Go to the Team Editor in W2/WA/WWP and click the speechbank drop down. Great Muppety Odin, the speechbank is there and ready to use!
NOTE: If you're playing Worms 2 your "speech" folder might be somewhere else. I think it's under "data" but I can't remember. Just look for it, you'll find it.
I DIDN'T KILL MY WIFE!
I don't care!
SO THAT'S IT?
Yep! That's it! Enjoy hearing Andy Davidson's squeaky voice calling you stupid, a nutter, and saying the slightly more comical "Whoops!" instead of the homogenized "Bummer!"
ANY DIFFERENCES WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
Yes!
There wasn't a "VICTORY.WAV" in the original Worms, so I've substituted with "EXCELLENT.WAV"
The original Worms also didn't have "BRILLIANT.WAV" or "AMAZING.WAV", and these again have been substituted with "EXCELLENT.WAV".
"COLLECT.WAV" is basically "LAUGH.WAV" with the shotgun reload at the start, for the same reasons above.
Special thanks to DeadCode for decompressing the WormsDC versions of "FireBall" and "DragonPunch". The WDC speechbank files were compressed in two different file formats and for the last decade I've had no ruddy idea how to crack 'em open and feast on the goey entrails. Trust DC to figure it out.
