Is there a way to change the backgrounds with custom maps so the background isn't always black? like a way to use the blue sky background of certain schemes like the Castle and Trees backgrounds from the default maps?

It's quite simple, you just have to play on PNG maps that have 64 or fewer colours in their palette and then switch between background detail levels with the Insert key. It's explained into detail here:

Or simply stick to playing on custom maps with the BIT and LEV extensions where it always works perfectly.

What KRD meant was to avoid playing on custom colour maps. Monochrome maps (http://worms2d.info/Monochrome_map_(.bit%2C_.lev)) have a .bit or .lev extension (colour maps have a .png extension).
