It is most certainly NOT simple to port from iPhone to Android. I suggest you try it yourself.

Welcome!

Not sure I agree with either point to be honest, not only is an iPhone too android conversion never going to be "easy"; even for a developer with a lot of experience in games programming, they would need to learn the platform. On top of that they have to to have clear proof that such a conversion would be profitable, which as far as I can tell after a few minutes of googling it probably isn't. Android is growing fast and a nice piece of software, but still holds only a small share of the market comparitively speaking.

As for being "verballed" on your first post.... ok, Melon could have been more tactful, but I would concidering a bit brash rather than out and out offensive. He probably just mistook you for an old-timer, we don't have post-counts here any more! Hope you enjoy the rest of the forums.

Alright, I was a little bit blunt, but I wouldn't go so far to say that I was insulting.

Oh, I agree that Android is nice, and in a lot of ways probably better than iPhone, but it's still relatively new. I got my iPhone about a year ago just before the 3Gs was released, at that point there were no Android phones obviously available only Windows or iPhone, and the phone I actually wanted (Sony X1) was £150 more expensive than the free iPhone 3G on the same contract.

Now things have changed, but Android is still a number of years behind, and don't forget, Worms will run on the iPod Touch and iPad too, with no extra development costs (or comparitivly small ones).

Hopefully they will make a 2D worms or port one at some point, they have for many others now (NGage, windows etc), but it's not a quick thing in the least. I think we just have to wait and see what happens with it.

I've got to say I agree with V-Bob, I got my HTC Desire last week and was very disappointed to find that I can only find a poor worms clone called "Goobers Vs Boogers" on the Android Market :(

Just found this article:
http://www.marketingmagazine.co.uk/News/MostEmailed/1004757/Android-sales-rising-faster-Apples/

The jist of it is that worldwide sales of Android phones are rising faster than iPhones, from just over half a million in Q1 2009 to 5 million in Q1 2010. Apparently in the US, Android phones even outsold iPhone! Although the iphone sold about 8.3 million in the same period Android is catching up fast, helped by the fact that more than one manufacturer can use the OS - with HTC, Samsung, LG , Motorola, and Sony Ericsson on the roster so far.

Apple also really keep the reins tight on their iPhone monopoly, and the main reason I got my Desire was that (aside from being technologically more advanced) my contract with my phone company is much cheaper and shorter, and my phone was free.
The only thing I would say is bad about Android so far is that HTC need to sort out some minor interface niggles, and there needs to be better software on the Android Market - who really wants fifty bubble breaker clones?

In my opinion the competition within the Android market and the need to compete with the iPhone itself will fuel the development of better hardware much more quickly than Apple will bring out new iPhones, and with the cost advantage and a brand name that can also hold it's own, the prospects look good for Android.
I think the main thing holding Android back as a platform is a total lack of wormage ;)

Now I'll show my complete ignorance of programming by saying that isn't Android a Linux based OS? I know that iPhone uses a completely different language to anything else (Objective-C) and things have to be written specifically for iPhone OS and the ARM hardware, so porting iPhone stuff is mega hard. But aren't a lot of other programs compiled in Linux anyway? Couldn't the Windows or Symbian versions be ported more easily?

I have a Nexus One, and would gladly pay for an Android port of Worms. I loved the reboot of Worms Reloaded on Steam, and would like to have a similar experience on Android.

I don't think the actual programming portion of porting the game has been the issue up until this point. I think it's more about storage. Some of you may remember back in the days before Android 2.2, apps could not be installed to the SD card by default, and most phones were seriously lacking internal storage (and some still do). A game as big as Worms would have been near impossible to reasonably trim down to a size that would fit on internal storage without impacting the overall experience.

I would say that in order to be able to create a great Worms experience on Android, it would have to require Android 2.2 for the ability to install to SD, or Team17 would have to engineer a method for installing the critical system files to internal storage and storing game assets on the SD card like what Gameloft does. Personally I just like the idea of just making Android 2.2 a requirement (sorry G1 owners :p), because then that also weeds out the older devices and gives Team17 a more powerful basic hardware platform to start with. And if Gameloft's current Android offerings are any indication, recent Android devices certainly can handle a new WVGA Worms game.
