View Full Version : Game does not launch!
Brokenworm
22 Jul 2009, 08:12
Since team17 doesn't respond to support emails, perhaps I can get some help here.
The game will not launch on
my iPhone 3G. I'm running iPhone OS 3.0 and I've uninstalled and re installed it several times.
When I attempt to launch the screen goes black like it's going to load, but then I'm taken back to my iPhone home screen.
Am I out my 5 dollars on this lemon of a game?

I haven't seen any other reports of that issue... certainly launches fine on my 3G iPhone running OS3.0. You haven't jailbroken your iPhone have you?
The screen should go black initially for a few seconds and then get the Worms/Team17 loading screen.
I've not seen any other reports of that issue either. Is there anything unusual about your iPhone?

thomasp, Luther,
Thanks for replying to me. My phone is completely stock and nothing out of the ordinary (definitely not jailbroken). I know these things happen and I'm mostly frustrated that I haven't heard back from Team17 support.
This is what I've done to troubleshoot:
Installed worms from the iPhone app store (over wireless)
Installed worms from iTunes on my localhost.
I've tried restarts before and after installation.
Each time I've removed worms from my iPhone, I've restarted it.
Not really sure what else there is to try other than a complete phone reset...
From my experiences, iPhone OS will start to terminate programs when it is nearly out of it's pathetic 128mb ram.
My guess is that safari is in the background taking some ram up. Try restartibg your iPhone then worms.
That's from my experiences with a jailbroken iPod touch 1g where I modded it to see my ram usage. Typically on a reboot I find 30mb ram free. With safari running that can put ram to 7mb. I dunno if this is the same on iPhone
(also safari runs in the background even if not jailbroken!)

Its probably not, because you say you have reinstalled it several times, but the iPhone will also drop you back to the home screen if it doesn't think you own the software. You can fix this by downloading a free app, or redownloading something from the app store that will require you to log in on the iPhone.

This also happens on my iPhone :(
I have a 3Gs.
I've tried reinstalling Worms, deleting it from iTunes and downloading it again, downloading other apps and restoring the iPhone but still it will not launch.
I've also since had the iPhone replaced due to a hardware fault and the replacement behaves exactly the same.
iTunes is shared on this PC and Worms on my partners iPhone 3G works fine :o
I'm starting to think there might be some incompatability between Worms and another app I'm using.....
Any ideas?

Just a thought... all those having problems with this game on their iPhones, how much free space do you have on your phones?
Possibly (wind guess here, I don't actually know if this is true or not!) if you don't have much free space on your phone, the game might not be able to write the necessary "temporary" data to the memory, so it doesn't start. Unfortunately I can't test/verify this as I don't have enough junk to fill my iPhone up

Thanks for the reply.
I have around 14Gb free so I would hope there is enough free there:)
I also use iStat which can free memory, this can give me around 170Mb free so I can confirm it's also not a memory issue.
Keep the ideas coming please :D

yeah same here I have 3.36GB free so should be fine... still doesn't work... can someone at Team 17/Apple please sort this out soon......Also as an aside, resident evil 5 does exactly the same thing (the demo version)

Certainly is a strange problem. I don't know anything about developing for the iPhone but my guess is that there must be a conflicting app of some kind. As it's not a widespread problem it must be a relatively obscure app, and not anything "stock" on the phones. And, as its been reported on US and UK iPhones, with a mix of 3G and 3GS phones its not specific to phone hardware.
For the record, I'm running it on my 8-month old UK 3G running OS3.0 and I've never had a problem.
Only other thing that will be of help is for everyone who's having problems to post an error log from their iPhone from when Worms crashes. This can be done as follows (apologies, these instructions are Mac-only, you'll have to figure out how to find the error logs on Windows):
Sync your phone to your computer using iTunes
Open the "Console" utility (applications --> Utilities)
Under Log Files/Logs expand the following "tree" (click the arrows): "~/Library/Logs" --> "CrashReporter" --> "MobileDevice" --> <Whatever your iPhone is called> --> Scroll to "WormsiPhone..."
Copy & paste to a text file and upload to the forum as an attachment
Should at least help the devs in narrowing down the problem :)

I'll try and get the error log and post it here, should be sometime over the weekend.
I'm also happy to list my installed apps :)
There might be one or two that we have that's the same.

This is a bit of a crazy theory, but do any of you with problems have Skype installed? Skype seems to do some things to the phone not normally allowed by the iPhone SDK, and it's possible it's mucking something up.
For the record, I can verify the game works fine on a jailbroken phone. :P

I don't have Skype installed on my phone (unjailbroken), so that may be why my game works.
I've had Skype installed but have since removed it.
I can't find where the error logs are with iTunes on a Windows PC, can anyone offer any help please?
Also upgraded to version 3.0.1 but still Worms fails to start :(
With the impending update to Worms I'm optimistically hoping that this will fix the issue...
I can't find where the error logs are with iTunes on a Windows PC, can anyone offer any help please?
Try here:
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/<DEVICE_NAME>
Windows Vista: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
Also upgraded to version 3.0.1 but still Worms fails to start :(
3.0.1 was only fixing a security flaw in the SMS application, it didn't change anything else.
Yeah I know 3.0.1 just fixed the security issue with sms but lets just say I was "hopeful" that Worms might work afterwards ;)
I'll try and get a copy of the error log.
Here's the log

You might want to attach the .txt file instead(if it's under 100kb), to avoid the extra-long post. :p

Apart from iPhone log files (certainly on Mac, not sure about windows) are .LOG files, which the forum won't accept. So you'd either have to manually change the extension to .txt or ZIP it.

Spike, I have a very strong suspicion that your problems are due to faulty iPhone OS software.
If at all possible, I'd advise using iTunes to restore your phone. Then, when it asks if you want to restore from a backup or set up as a new phone, select the option to set up as new.
If that doesn't fix it, I'd ask for a list of any and all apps you have installed on the device.
I would have thought that upgrading from 3.0 to 3.0.1 would have solved any problems like that since the upgrade pretty much overwrites the entire old OS, unlike when upgrading a normal computer OS.
I may be wrong though!
iPhone OS pretty much is a normal computer OS :p
It's just a cut-down OSX apparently
It is, but it updates differently. As in when there's any OS update, even the recent one that fixed just one bug, you have to download the entire 250Mb operating system from iTunes and upload that to your phone. Normal computer OSes just download a patch that alters a bit of code somewhere.
That's stupid. Apple is stupid.

*Bans Muzer for going off topic and saying bad things about Apple*
:p
-spike-: Thanks for posting the log file. I can't understand them but hopefully a passing dev will be and will help to narrow down the problem. If anyone else experiencing the failure to launch wants to post their log files, feel free - the more the merrier!
It would probably be easier if it was compiled with debug symbols. Though that would make decompiling easier.

This is true, yes. However, typically, iTunes will have the user restore their settings, apps, and music from a previous backup to make the OS update more seamless. This is great if all is working well, but the 'restore' will literally bring problems that you had on the old OS over to the new OS.
A large part of the reason that the iPhone OS is updated in this manner is part of the ongoing effort to stop jailbreaking.

No problem thomas. Apologies the post is a little long :o Feel free to save as an attachment if you wish.
Thanks to Fooruman for the suggestions.
However, I have restored the OS (please see first post), upgraded to 3.0.1 and have since replaced the iPhone with a brand new 3Gs (not jailbroken) so I would say this completely eliminates an OS issue.
I still think it could be incompatability with other apps, perhaps uninstalling all of my other apps and just leaving Worms might be worth a go.....?
Listing the installed apps I have against the OP's and boman1882's might also be worth a try?

My gut reaction, if you've tried it on two different phones is that there is most likely an application conflict. It would be worth you, and anyone else with this issue, posting a list of your applications.

Indeed, if it's not the OS and you don't even have Skype, it's got to be some other application. There are a few apps out there that do weird things to the phone or its filesystem.
A "fix" would probably be to have only Worms installed, but I'd hardly call that an acceptable resolution.

Yeah, I have also updated and nothing has changed. Also deleted skype and that didn't help.
The problem is I have about 80 apps and dnt know if these is an easy way to list them without typing them all out.
Just hoping the update fixes it although by that time I will have probably already found a new app to play with. So team 17 can be sitting there with a free £2.99. (I think I need it more than them)
any word from a dev on that log file?
My installed apps, any the same for you guys?

Took me ages to put them in alphabetical order :-)
From that list, I have Flight Control and that's it.
I've just found a shortcut for listing the apps... (sorry!). Go into the "Applications" library in iTunes, click in the window where all the apps are listed. Press Cmd+A (Ctrl+A on Windows) to select all, and then Cmd+C (Ctrl+C) to copy them. Paste them into a reply box on the forum and Bob's your uncle. It should work on Windows, but I can't test it for obvious reasons :p

I've got one last idea that can occasionally fix this problem for some people - it's a long shot, but has been shown to work.
Sometimes the iTunes DRM manager on the phone will think that you're running an app that's not yours, even if you've paid for it and it's licensed to you. When this happens, you can get the device to sort of "check again" by downloading a free app. With Worms already installed, go to the App Store and download some free app (any one, shouldn't matter). Reboot the phone, then try to play Worms.
If that doesn't work, I really have no further ideas... perhaps a dev can provide some insight?
Thanks thomas! :o
Thanks Fooruman but already tried that (see first post)

Do any of those apps have Push notifications, as introduced in iPhone OS3? I wonder if that may be causing a conflict - apps trying to send/check for push notifications while Worms is starting up, and then running out of memory.
