View Full Version : Did just_jsin96 steal my laptop? Let's Play Detective!

Ok. So as some of you may know already, I got my laptop stolen last Monday, a week ago. After dealing with the police and getting the police report filed and stuff, I called Toshiba on Wednesday to report my laptop as stolen so that if it is ever taken to be repaired under warranty they'll snag it. On Friday a Toshiba affiliate company which handles their warranty stuff emailed me a request to fill out a form with my serial number and police report number, etc.

Only thing is, this email was sent to an address I have never seen before in my life - just_jsin96@yahoo.com - and was apparently blind carbon copied to my email address, the email which the company has on file. This begs an important question - why?

I tried calling the company, but they had no idea why it was sent to someone else, so I've forwarded the email I got to them again in an attempt to ask why it went to him. Hopefully I'll reach someone who actually speaks english this time...

So, what do I make of this? Did just_jsin96 try to get my computer registered as his own stolen property? I really can't figure out why the warranty company would send an email to this guy and carbon copy it to myself - it makes no sense.

I also found out when I asked Toshiba about all of this that the customer service rep I had spoken with was totally incompetent and didn't actually flag my computer as stolen - so why did I get this email if my computer wasn't flagged yet? I'm wondering if anyone here can make sense of all of this...

Maybe Toshiba's system is so messed up that they're not exactly sure who each laptop belongs to?

I saw that, and that's another thing that makes no sense. But locations are easy enough to spoof, and they did in fact appear to have emailed him. I'm just really confuzzled about the whole thing, which is why I was asking about it here.

It's still within the country though, he may just have been a visiting opportunist.
Less likely to get caught if your not from around..

I can't imagine a thief going to the trouble of editing data. They act on instinct: take what they see when the opportunity arises. I doubt it was planned. Someone probably just saw the laptop and took it.

In fact doing this would incriminate himself. What would he have to gain from it?

Except that by what Someperson said, there was no way to just see the laptop without having actively searched for it or known where it was. If I recall correctly, they left a bunch of backpacks together close to the playing field, and his was the only one carrying valuables. And was also the only one stolen.

It doesn't seem like the scenario allowed for enough time to browse trough a dozen backpacks to find the one with the most valuable item in it. Unless he got lucky and found it in the first guess...

Which still would have required him to lift several bags. I would expect there would be at least someone looking over the bags every few moments...

This may be evidence that I've been hanging around the SA forums too much, but that thread title is making me think that there's an actual videogame about this, and SomePerson will soon be posting either videos or annotated screenshots.
