View Full Version : Detecting anonymous messages
Could anyone give me detailed instructions on how to detect anonymous messages sent in-game using Wireshark?
Thank you!

Why not just watch the replay afterwords? :-/
Heck, if it comes to it, why not just watch the replay DURING? :p
You can't watch replays of the currently playing game since 3.6.29.0 (or 3.6.28.0). It is to prevent cheating by seeing mine times and PM's from other players to other players.

Oh yeah, you are right. I had not realized that. I approve, of course, as it is very easy to abuse, just did not realize it had been done yet. :)

Lol, thanks for the detailed instructions, but apparently it's not that easy.

I find it more elegant using a program like WireShark instead of viewing a replay file DURING the game.

You can.
Yes, but not on the computer that is running the game... IE: it is more hassle then it is worth usually.
I'm playing on my PC and running Wireshark on my laptop, so that's not a problem.

Wireshark is quite literally the idiots tool for sniffing, and the problem is that it really IS that easy. But my instructions were sarcastic for a reason; you shouldn't be using such tools during a game anyway, for various reasons
O..K.. Thanks for the info. Would somebody else be kind enough to tell me what should I do to be able to identify anonymous messages (having in mind that I play WA on a computer and I run WireShark on another computer on the network- the one that shares the Internet connection)?
If you honestly feel strongly enough about it, figuring out how to use the program yourself would be the most dignified answer. And unless you're expecting to be given directions from one of our more pretentious members here, you won't have a lot of luck finding what you desire in this thread anyway :)

Network messages (including chat) are compressed, so it's not that easy.
Compressed, but not encrypted - It's easier than it (Ideally) should be

This thread should be locked.. they're called 'anonymous' messages for a reason.

I remember years ago Bloopy made a replay chat viewer in C# and there was a program called WACR for relaying WA replay chat in realtime to an IRC server. I don't remember if they displayed the author of anonymous messages but if the replay format has changed a lot since then they won't help you anyway.
