yeah, so I finally bothered to set up a myspace to keep track of friends I don't see much and such (and absolutely no one else, if I can help it).

anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way that I can get a pre-coded layout or something where I can customize the page or if anyone would be willing to code me a simple layout or something (if doing so doesn't take particularly long, anyway), or anything of that variety to give myself something I like more. any ideas?

again, didn't make the page to talk to random people and the first person to try to get me in on all the stupid crap on the site gets stabbed. I only have it to talk to old friends. to me, the site's just going to be another message board I visit, essentially.

and as for all the cool kids being on facebook, may they enjoy their time there. I couldn't possibly care less which site is the newest fad :p

http://www.bigoo.ws/generator/myspace_editor.aspxuseful, but not what I'm looking for. I wanted to do something myself rather than just edit some colors. I might see if my cousin'll do it for me if no one knows a better alternative.

I'm looking for something where I can manage the borders, backgrounds, fonts, etc. myspace has a built-in editor if I want to build a horrible glittery abomination, but i'm much more fond of websites that don't make my eyes bleed tears of horror.

I just don't see what the point in it is.

Facebook at least lets you plan events and integrate them with calendar software, for example, and it gives you a FriendFeed-style hub of your friends' activity, including anything they want to share... It gets its users by being useful. To the best of my knowledge MySpace is just Profile+Blog+Email+Guestbook, which is just "the internet" but all censored and approved by a group of right-wing lunatics.

Sounds Fun!

Sounds Fun!myspace is a basic forum that everyone on the planet is a member of, basically. that's all I want. I'm not planning events with friends and such often enough to want that sort of thing. I'm just talking to them cause I don't get the opportunity to do so much anymore. all I need is the comments section and maybe the blogging section and a user-base that's fairly large to include my friends. myspace offers that.

I'm not interested in myspace for the features it provides as a social network. you said yourself there are better for that. I just want a large user-base and a way to communicate. I haven't made a myspace sooner cause I just couldn't care less about 90% of what the site is.

the reason I want it to look good is because it's MY website and I don't want it to look generic and crap if I have the option to not do so. I'm not trying to make it fancy, just trying to do a custom skin/theme, basically.

now, enough defending myself over something so damn petty. if you can't help with what I'm asking for, then shut the hell up.

No, they're not. I'm not. I don't think I know more than a couple of people who are. I know some people who used to be, if that helps. They left in disgust.

I'm just talking to them cause I don't get the opportunity to do so much anymore. all I need is the comments section and maybe the blogging section and a user-base that's fairly large to include my friends. myspace offers that.

Yes, but the Internet offers that quite happily without MySpace, and it does it better. If you want a blog with a comments page, that is what Blogger is for. It is what Wordpress is for. It is what Typepad and LiveJournal and Movable Type and Twitter and hell, even plain, old-school email lists are for. It is what the Internet is for. That's what the Internet is: content and discussion thereof. That's all the Internet is. You don't need MySpace for that or anything. MySpace is just a packaged, sanitised, censored and centralised version of it. It's the Internet, only worse. That's why it attracts the kind of people who actually write down and enter AOL Keywords.

I'm just starkly aware that while Wordpress.com is happy to be banned in an entire country before it will start deleting its users' content (http://ma.tt/2007/08/turkey-update/), MySpace is happy to randomly delete very large and active discussion groups just because somebody thinks that the very idea of a large group of atheists having a chat is somehow offensive (http://www.secularstudents.org/node/1933). (So yes, "right-wing lunatics".) You can avoid that kind of censorship by not willingly submitting to the whimsy of known liars and propaganda artists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Interactive_Media). (Again, "right-wing lunatics".) Seems to me that if you're going to put in the effort to make a blog and make a theme for it, you might as well do it properly, on a site that will help you migrate your content if you decide to move (http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/2006/06/import-export-full-wordpresscom-blog-with-comments/) (MySpace doesn't (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070823083811AAIGHYD)), that will let you link where you like (MySpace doesn't (http://rufuswhite.blogspot.com/2007/07/myspace-final-crushing-blow.html)) and discuss what you like, that will let you accept comments from people who aren't registered with that specific website, and so forth.

I don't want to troll your MySpace thread, but if you announce that you've made a bad decision I am going to try to talk you out of it, because I think it's important that people make educated and ethical consumer choices. I think that MySpace has pretty awful business practices and offers a pretty rubbish service. For those reasons, I boycott the site and suggest that others do too. I'd do exactly the same if you started a thread called "Tell Me Some Good Nestlé Product-Based Recipes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestlé_boycott)" or "Let's All Buy Spore So We Can Play It Together! (http://www.realvg.org/display.php?type=articles&id=258)" or "I'm Thinking Of Converting To Fundamentalist Islam". But if you're not interested in that then I guess I'll shut the hell up after all. Not much point me harping on if you're not going to listen. Not much point you posting at all, in fact.

I'm not on myspace because it's some awesome fad. I'm on it because it has a large user base and I can have a page there without much effort being put into it. I KNOW myspace is a crappy website. How true.

I'm with Andrew on this one. I feel the points in his post are mostly very valid, especially those suggesting better alternatives that don't require me to become a member of a huge social network thing and spend an age filling out profile details to be able to post a comment on them. And since you seem concerned with the look of this, as you call it, website, I also can't quite understand why you'd like to start with something so wrong to begin with, visually.

look, andrew. I don't CARE about your opinion on myspace. shove it.

That explains why you have apparently not bothered to read it:

well my point is I KNOW how crappy myspace is

It's not just that: sure, MySpace is crap and there are better alternatives, but that's true of loads of services. The point is that they're anticompetitive and willing to censor their users according to the hyper-conservative values of its owners (who are FOX, a corporation so dishonest and right-wing that they censor political candidates they support so they can continue to attack liberals for saying the same thing (http://www.jedreport.com/2008/06/damaging-mccain.html)).

As I say, if you want to support them and their nasty policies then you go right ahead. I wouldn't dream of stopping you. You have every right to endorse whatever crooks and liars you want. I just thought you should know what sort of people you are patronising so you can make an educated choice. Sorry if you took that as some kind of personal attack.

I just asked a simple question and you decided to wage a crusade against everything that is and ever was myspace. you didn't even once consider my explanations of WHY I'm using the horrible website or my repeated attempts to tell you that I just plain don't care at all about why everyone else hates it. your opinion is irrelevant. the reason? I SHARE IT!

I'm not using it because I LIKE the site. I'm using it because everyone else likes the site. if I had a way to catch up with the same people easily without using myspace, I would. trust me. the whole design of myspace is aweful. I really can't understand how it got popular with all the "it used to be worse" that I keep hearing. unfortunately, it's the most widely used networking site, and so I have to use it if I want to keep tabs with friends who only have myspaces.

I've said that same thing over and over, so if you're done ignoring everything I say, let's just let this thread go away now. my cousin's decided he'll code for me.

I would say in Nathan's case it's more "I have to use (or do) it because everybody else does." He doesn't want his page 'professionally coded'. While he has a profile he may as well play with making it look nice. His reasons for needing to use the service sound acceptable to me and I'm sure that armed with the facts he can make his own choices. Perhaps having someone on the inside will help to spread the word. It certainly helps to have experience.

I just inferred that you didn't know this stuff. You asked for advice and I gave it to you. Then you went ape**** because you didn't happen to like my advice, despite claiming to agree with me. If you posted a thread asking "what is the best homeopathic remedy for treating my son's diabetes", and I said "none. Use medicine that works instead" would you say I was trolling then? I would say I was helping. This is the same as that (sort of).

What really annoyed me was that rather than say something like "I don't like it either but it's just easier this way", you said "shut the hell up". You didn't address anything I said, but tried to counter it by making factually inaccurate claims about MySpace. (It is, in fact, simplicity itself to keep track of MySpace users without having an account yourself: subscribe to the blogs by RSS, set up your own blog on Wordpress, and email anyone you want to chat with.) When I corrected you, you said "I don't care about your opinion... Shove it". Then when I pointed out, I thought politely, that you were not coming across well, you went off on a rant. This all seems like very strange behaviour for someone who claims simultaneously to hate and not care about the site.

MySpace might well be **** but whether or not he uses it is up to Aku, whoever's being a dick (both of you).

CSS tutorials can be found here:
http://www.w3.org/Style/Examples/011/firstcss

Feel free to use my site's css as an example of how it can be done:
http://vader.wurmz.net/ccstyle.css

Compare to the to source - you can see that if I give <p> tags a property (font, size, indent or whatever) in the .css file, those properties will be applied to all paragraphs which open with <p> (and of course end with </p>).

It's easy to figure out.

Quick thread hi-jack:
Andrew: Is WordPress a good site to blog on, then? I have considered starting a blog before to flex my writing muscles but it seems like the sort of thing I could do myself on my own webspace. Would it be easier/worthwhile to use WordPress rather than Blogger for this or is it swings and roundabouts?

Wordpress.com is fairly nice. I've used it very briefly. Wordpress can also be downloaded and installed on your own server, which'll let you hack it about a bit with plugins and your own code edits if that's not enough. Blogger is feature-light compared to Wordpress but it does the job pretty well. I for one prefer Wordpress. The hosted options tend to be limiting in terms of themes, though, which makes it hard to get a distinctive look when they're popular.

I'm sure you can import posts between hosted and self-hosted Wordpress blogs. I imagine Blogger will do something similar; Google tend to be good for that kind of thing (free IMAP email, thankyou very much).

Quick thread hi-jack:
Andrew: Is WordPress a good site to blog on, then? I have considered starting a blog before to flex my writing muscles but it seems like the sort of thing I could do myself on my own webspace. Would it be easier/worthwhile to use WordPress rather than Blogger for this or is it swings and roundabouts?

if you want to do it on your own webspace, install the wordpress software. you'll get all the features of wordpress.com plus the flexibility of your own server and domain. pickleworm and i just put up a new wordpress blog on www.gelatinous.net
