We've all seen it before, and here I am again presenting the question: what background do you have on your desktop?
Mine looks like the following.
http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8589/wallpapersr8.th.png (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=wallpapersr8.png)
I only run a 1024x768 setup, because my monitor is relatively small. When I pick up a job next year, I'm going to buy a bigger monitor and things.

And Mtl, you can take screenshots by holding down Shift+Cmd+3, rather than opening Grab.

Just finished formating and re-installing my computer, which is why there's a lack of desktop items. The background is of 27 of my 32 planned Asanits for Spore. Some of them I still have to make (4), and some I just haven't taken a picture of yet (5).
Now that I formatted my compy, it feels I've got a brand new computer! Especially now that I've switched to Opera!
Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, it turns out that the lack of a backlight was indeed due to drivers gone missing. It's fine now.

When 1600x1200 are considered smalls I expect 20'' to be cheap enough for low-end market. Just like dual core is low-end market right now and no one sells unicore processors unless it's some cartoon company like Apple.

Atom? Granted there's a dual core version coming, but there's still a call for the cheapest of cheap at the low end. That's not likely to change.
LCD isn't going to be around forever, and whatever comes next (OLEDs, new CRTs, etc) will cost considerably more for quite a long time. Plus, laptops can't take screens which are very big.
I just think you're all far too optimistic.
The next big thing will be TV's that use LEDs to disaplay the picture.

Laptops? We're talking about monitors here. You're really arguing my point that when 1600x1200 is considered small 17'' will be barely produced? Because quite frankly, you're full of it if you are. Let's put things into prespective here shall we? If 1600x1200 is considered small, which is the comment that started this exchange of theories, then it means that 20'' is considered small, because that's the screensize that resolution runs at in general, am I right? So, in a world were having a 20'' is the normal (see: general) thing to do, who is going to want to produce super high resolution 17'' screens?
I'm aware there's a long time before people stop usign 17'', but there's also a long time until 1600x1200 is considered small. So please take this into consideration before replying.

No need to be an ass?
Anyway, this whole argument is just like 'the world will only ever build 6 computers' nonsense. It seems sensible at the time but things get bigger and cheaper so quickly that it will look ridiculous in a few years time
MrBunsy
15 Sep 2008, 10:36
When things get bigger and cheaper, they can often stay the same size and get considerably cheaper. Larger monitors may sell to the consumers quite well, but I know offices and schools which still have 15" screens because they were cheaper. They're always going to want the cheapest.
I'm aware there's a long time before people stop usign 17'', but there's also a long time until 1600x1200 is considered small. So please take this into consideration before replying.
That's precisely my point. In that long time not only will we have a new technology for screens becoming commercially available (which will be more expensive), but more and more people in the non-western world getting computers. There will always be the low end market for the cheap crap, and it's probably going to get bigger - look at the Eee PC! It's not the same as better specs staying in the same box, bigger screens are exactly that.
And as to laptops, if you've got to manufacture small screens for them, you're probably going to make a few stand-alone screens too.
When things get bigger and cheaper, they can often stay the same size and get considerably cheaper. Larger monitors may sell to the consumers quite well, but I know offices and schools which still have 15" screens because they were cheaper. They're always going to want the cheapest.
The Eee PC is a freak product, it's not mainstream by any means. You're right that when 20'' are cheap 17'' will be even cheaper. My point here is that 1MB RAM sticks are cheaper than 1GB ones yet no one "purchases" them anymore because they're obsolete. Now I understand that there's an important difference in that phisical space has limits but really, if you can fit a 17'' you shouldn't have any problems with something relatively bigger.
If you go to any tech shop you'll notice there's not many, if any, 14'' or 15'' on show, they might have a few on the backroom but none exposed, and this is in a time were 1024 isn't considered small yet, I mean sure, we're debating hypothesis here and future proofing, but come on, when 1600x1200 is considered small (just like 640 is *starting* to now) then take my word that 17'' will be barely produced for home PC use.
About the newer techology starting on smaller scale, well, that's how it usually works out, however I don't have much faith in new image systems after HD.

I'm fairly certain that 1MB sticks are more expensive (new at least), because they're not manufactured in any quantity, if at all. But I get your point.
If you go to any tech shop you'll notice there's not many, if any, 14'' or 15'' on show, they might have a few on the backroom but none exposed, and this is in a time were 1024 isn't considered small yet, I mean sure, we're debating hypothesis here and future proofing, but come on, when 1600x1200 is considered small (just like 640 is *starting* to now) then take my word that 17'' will be barely produced for home PC use.If that sort of rez is ever considered small, I daresay that will happen. My doubt though is that we'll ever see that sort of rez as standard for your average (non gaming) home or office PC.
About the newer techology starting on smaller scale, well, that's how it usually works out, however I don't have much faith in new image systems after HD.'HD' never really applied to PCs. PCs have had 'HD ready' screens for donkeys years. What can be vastly improved when we move on from LCD is contrast ratios, lack of light leakage, efficiency and lack of native rezs. OLEDs and new forms of CRT screens are some of the things I've read about, and I think the next few years could be quite interesting as they start to be refined and introduced in a more widespread way.

LCD isn't going to be around forever, and whatever comes next (OLEDs, new CRTs, etc) will cost considerably more for quite a long time. Plus, laptops can't take screens which are very big.Yet even 17'' 1280x1024 laptops are standard these days, fairly larger than ye olde 14'' ones.

And my personal testing on a Vista makes me feel like I'm being insulted on most stuff. Most stuff changed places to the most awkward places, and some visuals, even though they feel pretty, make me feel like it's wasting CPU...

I....'m getting a headache trying to decypher that line!

Right click program ->Properties -> Compatibility -> Disable desktop composition. Disables all visual effects when the program is run to when the program is closed again. Also, fullscreen programs disable them automatically until minimised/windowed.
except that vista has benchmarked lower on every test by every gaming website, magazine, etc and even now has some game-crashing bugs that have yet to be fixed...not MANY at this point, so I don't complain much about the OS, but I still consistently have game crashes on more graphically intense games.
Agreed on the slower speeds, not so agreed on game crashes! I've had barely any irregular (aka: not bugs in the program) crashes since I switched to Vista, which is the main reason why I love it so much! That, and the extras are really useful once you get to know them better. Oh, that and the security too. And faster start-up/shut-down (yet oddly enough, not hibernation; it's faster to boot up from shutdown than to hibernate) speeds.
That, and that I got it to show 8-bit characters in the window frames depending on where the window is! Best use of Vista's AERO ever!

I....'m getting a headache trying to decypher that line!
My bad for using the WORST possible words :p This is what I meant:
I'm opening something in Paint, just for the heck of it, and I want to find a particular image in the other hard drive. So I click up there to check the folders.
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7469/dibujo2y.jpg
WAIT WHAT? INTERNET PAGES? WHY WOULD I NEED IT THERE? And no, clicking on those do NOTHING.
And that's just the most obvious one. Stuff like having the shut down button make the computer go into sleep mode (at least on laptops), EXCEPT if there are updates, when it just works as shutting down. To shut it down you have to click the arrow next to it, then select it. Also having the control panel quite confusing unless you set the original view, or the countless compativility problems on most stuff, etc.
They fixed most regressions with Windows 7. Various issues with Vista simply don't exist in Windows Xp. Windows 7 resolves most so far...

I've had barely any irregular (aka: not bugs in the program) crashes since I switched to Vista, which is the main reason why I love it so much!it's finnicky with specific games and video cards, I find. for instance, I switched from an 8800GTX to a 9800GT recently and the 9800 hasn't crashed on me once yet. before then, though, I had friends running damn near the same machine I was on vista and never crashing at all, or crashing 3 and 4 times more than I was, all on the same games. it's just a weird OS.
That, and that I got it to show 8-bit characters in the window frames depending on where the window is! Best use of Vista's AERO ever!this confuses me. what are you talking about, exactly?

I've compelted FarCry 2, Crysis, Dead Space, Mass Effect and a couple of other games, on max full settings, 64bit goodness with DX10 were possible and I don't recall these crashes you talk about.
And yes Metal Alex, XP runs faster because Vista uses more resources. But when your computer is good enough to not notice the difference then Vista is infintely faster. Specially when doing a search.
This debate is pointless, Vista is an underrated piece of software that delivers. Get a good machine and stop moaning.

it seems to be mostly hardware related but not for any particular pieces of hardware, just maybe certain combinations or something. it makes no sense, which is why so many people complain about it so much.....granted, it gets FAR more flak than it deserves, but it still isn't as stable as XP.
this confuses me. what are you talking about, exactly?

Or, to elaborate, y'see those diagonal shading effects on the window borders, that move with the window? Those aren't so much effects as they are a second background with transparency values too!

Use the other arrows on that toolbar. The ones next to the folder you want to look through quickly.

The one you clicked is for quick-navigating to the folder you closed the explorer window on the last times. Which includes browsers.
Except the browser links do work for me, but I'm using Opera.
then everything went ****ty for no reason at all
The trademark of hardware malfunction! Also known as get-a-new-computer syndrome.

Your sarcasm is only matched by the generality of the thread title. Better luck next time.
The generality of the thread title? It's quite specific, isn't it?
So, what you're saying is that, in fact, I wasn't being sarcastic? OK, so far I understand.
Now, answer my question.

Vista is slower than it needs to be. XP is better, in framerate and loading times terms, than Vista. Vista may handle multiple cores better than XP, but games have yet to take much advantage of anything more than 2 cores. Thus I think XP is better for games and general use.
Windows 7 is also better benchmark wise than Vista, to varying degrees depending on what you're measuring and which review you read, but it's faster and more responsive in almost every respect. Thus, if I really feel the need for DX10, I'll wait for 7.
I do try and think things through before I say them.

Given the best machine ever, Vista is better in every single department than XP. Why are we having this discussion? You're just being an idiot. Vista loads everything faster, its 64bit support is infintely superior to XP's, it allows better graphic software and it loads faster, because it handles multiple cores easier. If your argument is that XP runs Worms Armageddon and Tetris better then okay, you are right, but when I do a gaming comparison I think about the newest games and technology. You see, a Ford Focus is not better than a Ferrari Enzo even if the Focus has more general use and is more practical to go buy a baggete.
Framerate, lol...
Now now, Bunsy has a point. An operating system's success depends very much on its user base.
Vista might be better with a top-end machine but very few people have a top-end machine. As a result, for the majority of people (who can't afford to upgrade their PCs) XP runs better.
So, in theory Vista is superior but in practice XP tends to perform better.
User experience is something which really does need to be taken into account with an operating system, since its ability to operate at the user's desired level of performance is critical to its success.
In conclusion, this discussion is a little pointless. If you have a top-end machine, Vista will out perform XP. If you have a middle of the range PC then XP will out perform Vista. If you have a realy crap PC then Win98SE will out perform XP.
Vista > XP > Win98SE > Win95 > Win3.1 > DOS >= chalk on the floor.
Simple.

That's my point though.
Your point is that users can have different experiences on different machines, therefore leading to users on worse machines to prefer XP at no fault of their own, the extension of which being that XP out-performs Vista in most homes?
OK, cool. I misunderstood your post.
No, that wasn't my point, that's something I acknowledge and agree with. I think my car example was pretty clear in that sense, I don't really take into account mineswapper and 45 year old ladies playing bejweled when deciding what the best gaming OS is, if that wasn't clear it now is, Vista supports the newst top notch hardware and software better than XP, making it a more advanced OS which allows the best games to run the best way.

If practical is what you want from the car, then surely the Focus is better?
A little story: Many years ago I had a PII. 350Mhz, can't remember how much RAM. It ran windows 98. XP came out, and I got my hands on a copy. I installed it and was surprised at how fast it was. It booted far quicker than I'd ever seen 98 start. Possibly it was an unfair comparison, old install of 98 vs new install of XP, but this was XP installed on a PC well below the minimum specs, and running well. Very well, I switched permanently soon afterwards.
When Vista came out, I got a copy, I tried it on my computer. It booted slower than XP and was sluggish to use. I was not impressed. I looked up benchmarks, and found that XP did indeed get higher scores for games than Vista on the same hardware.
Possibly Vista does now fair better than XP on really top end stuff, it's been a while since I've found any benchmarks comparing the two. But even on my new laptop, XP is faster to boot and seems more responsive, leading me to come to no conclusion other than that XP is faster, more responsive and better for games than Vista ever seems capable of.
If I ever buy an uber-machine maybe I'll find that Vista does out-perform XP. But I don't have that kind of money, nor do I know anyone who does. Hence: "urgh, vista".
---8<---
Agreed. I think we're all on the same page here. Perhaps for the sake of consistency I should summarise it again...
If you have a mediocre PC then XP will perform better but Vista is a superior OS in that it is more powerful when running on its minimum spec than XP on its minimum spec.
Yaaaay!
You don't need an uber machine, you just tried Vista, long ago, on a below average machine and have since moaned about it. I suggest you modernize your opinions.
A dual core 64bit processor machine with 4GB ram and a high end graphic card isn't even that expensive. And Vista will fly while XP will still be XP, taking ages to do things Vista does in real time.
But you've just admitted you use a laptop so I'm not even sure why we're discussing these things.

A laptop with a 2.4ghz Core 2 duo, 3 gigs of RAM and an 8600GT. That's pretty high spec by my reckoning.
That's better than my desktop PC.
Speaking of which, ignoring overclockability, would anyone say it's worth upgrading from Athlon 64 3200+ to Athlon 64 3500+, bearing in mind I will still only have 1GB RAM and a GeForce2? I mean, it's a pain in the **** replacing the CPU but I've been offered a 3500+.
I know it won't run Vista still, but I don't care about that. I'll consider Vista when my machine is good enough.

It's still specs? Windows should care about the box how?
The box can make a huge difference. Depending on airflow, case materials and fan power, two machines of the same spec in different boxes could perform significantly differently.
I'm not saying your laptop won't run Vista as a result of that but it is an example of how the box can affect performance.
