You should NOT keep your firewall disabled, your computer can get compromised fairly quickly if it has no firewall.

I'd throw up a Franpa Alert for Total Misinformation right now, but the site that they're hosted on appears to be down at present.

I haven't used a firewall at all. Ever. I have used various Internet Security packages and always disable the firewall because they cause more problems than they solve. Any halfway decent security package can detect and neutralise an intrusion attack without the firewall.

Besides, these sort of attacks usually stem from opening suspicious attachments or visiting dubious websites.

So you want a security package that acts like a firewall yet isn't a firewall?I haven't used a firewall at all. Ever. Why do security package's include A firewall as A part of the package? is it because it enables the security package as a whole, the ability to stop these attacks?

That'd be clever were it not for the fact that I'm referring to Intrusion Detection and not a Firewall. The two are completely separate things.

Here, have your trophy back.

A decent firewall will allow the end user to Allow/Deny connections and detect suspicious connections, Hence why it was merged into security packages. Security software detects viruses/trojans, Bad registry changes and system attacks while Firewalls detect intrusions and bad internet connections.... what would you gain from merging the two?

Wait, people who play internet games actually use firewalls?
That's new to me.

Well, routers act as natural firewalls as long as you don't forward too many ports, and that applies to firewalls as well. I only have port 17011 forwarded to a linux box and ports 80 and 21 forwarded to a Wii (which currently can't get viruses from the internet without a different port forwarded, and even then you have to accept a random connection which is pretty stupid)

I haven't used a software firewall for the last seven years.

Uni campus LAN has their own dedicated hardware firewalls, so I stopped using any software ones. Only used up resources and annoyed me as hell with the constant pop-ups until it has learned enough.

Later when I had my a private ISP, I still didn't use any software firewall and it worked flawlessly until I bought a router with built-in firewall.
An up-to-date anti-virus program and the occasional anti-spyware scan are perfectly fine, if you know what you're doing and don't download and execute code from random websites or emails.
I'd throw up a Franpa Alert for Total Misinformation right now, but the site that they're hosted on appears to be down at present.
I have uploaded them to my imageshack:

It sounds like you are using a router, try following these (http://computerhead.biz/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51) instructions. Remember to register/login first!
