View Full Version : Bunsy's TWG - Number 2
MrBunsy
24 Jul 2008, 11:04
Signups are closed, the game has started. Rules are similar to last round (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=660767&postcount=1) but with some tweaks and a few more special roles.
Special roles:
Priest - knows the count of special roles still alive.
Guardian Angel - can choose one other player to protect from wolf kills every night
Seer - can find the true role of one other player every night
All players appear to be entirely human and vote in the lynching.
Changes in rules and roles:
I'll end the day at 2100 GMT, and start the next day at about 0700 GMT as promptly as I can (that's 10pm and 8am BST). I will also only return PMs to the seer in the morning.
I like the talking moderator idea - so I will publicly announce in the morning what role (but not which player) the Seer uncovered.
Unless anyone has any major objections, I think we have enough room for another special role: someone who will be PMed every morning with the number of specials (not including themselves) still alive. Specials include the wolves, Seer and GA.
I'd like to enforce the no talking after dieing rule a bit more. One last in-character last words post only. Please, no last advice and no interfering with the game. I know it's a bit dull to die off early, but it can spoil things for either the plotting wolves or humans to have their plans spoiled by someone they've already killed saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Sometimes people get killed off precisely because they seem like they've worked out who the wolves might be, or know too much.

I'm in
A role that can either discern the identity of the dead, or even just the number of remaining werewolves in the game could be interesting. But then the wolves would need a buff otherwise they'll lose repeatedly.
Perhaps you could add a Vigilante role. Every night, they kill someone of their choosing. This would probably lead to a lot of human deaths. I'm not sure if it should be a human or wolf role though.
MrBunsy
24 Jul 2008, 11:12
The wolves already can kill one person of their liking, so that might not work so well. Maybe Lovers, or similar? Make two humans linked, so that if one dies, the other dies too.
How about a role which can only see the number of special roles? Eg wolves + Seer + Ga. They'd only get their PM after the next day starts, so they wouldn't be able to tell if it was a special killed during the night, or a wolf or special lynched.
Alien King
24 Jul 2008, 11:15
Hmm, mabye.
Just had a thought, if the vigilante was on his own, not part of the human or wolf team, that way wolves and humans would get killed (mainly humans). Of course he'd be consigned to failure, as the odds of him winning would be small.
And of course, the humans would not know who was killed by who.
Lovers may work. It would be interesting if one of the lovers was a werewolf.

24 Jul 2008, 11:19
As a simple-minded peasant all these roles frighten me. Basically because they all feel gimmicky and crap and dont add anything to the game. I DO think the identities of the deceased should be revealed though
Hey look! Plasma bleeds blue! I wonder what that could mean!
Yes, werewolves bleed blue
Alien King
24 Jul 2008, 11:23
Nah, I think it's more interesting if they're not revealed. Or at least, only revealed to a single person.
You're right though, all these extra roles do feel gimmicky. It would be silly to add them in a game with so few people. It may make more sense in a game with about 20 people in.
The majority of players should be normal, boring humans.

24 Jul 2008, 11:56
I just realised Im going to Italy tomorrow for a week :p At this point I should do the decent thing and pull out, but instead Ill leave a list of people to lynch/maul in order to last until I die or the game ends :p Just dont make me seer/GA
MrBunsy
24 Jul 2008, 12:02
There's really not too much fun in doing that, though. The whole is to adapt to fit the new situation each day :p
Paul.Power
24 Jul 2008, 12:07
I think I'll join in this time round
Agreed, adding more special roles would be a bad idea. And giving away if the person that died was a wolf or not just spoils the fun, as there's no need to think back about whether mabye you made the wrong choice, and mabye those lynchers were actually the wolves.
Well, mabye just one person should be able to know, or something like that.
Alien King
24 Jul 2008, 12:12
Just to give the wolves a bit of an edge though, try to make 4 people be wolves, depending on numbers of course.
MrBunsy
24 Jul 2008, 12:19
I thought about that, but the problem is, unless the humans get their act together very quickly, they are unlikely to lynch wolves on the first few days. Then if there are too many wolves, they get a majority pretty quickly.

I say keep the roles secret after death, but add the new role "gravedigger", who upon death will see the role (probably reduced to human/werewolf only, not the special humans).
Secret roles will compensate a bit for the advantage of PMs that both sides have.
Check out the special roles form the daVinci edition:
(I really want to have the medium, the possessed, the notary, the werehamster and the mythomaniac, not all of them if we don't get enough players that is.)
- Medium : he is a Human who can talk with the dead. At the beginning
of the night (starting from the second one), the Moderator calls his phase,
and shows him thumbs-up, if the last player lynched was a Werewolf,
thumbs-down if not.
- Possessed : he is a Human, but he sides with the Werewolves...
without knowing who they are! Therefore he wins if the Werewolves win.
- Bodyguard : he is a Human who protects a player of his choice,
each night. At night (starting with the second one), before the
Werewolves' phase, the Moderator calls the Bodyguard phase: the
Bodyguard points at another player. If the Werewolves choose that
player as the victim, he does not die, and nobody is killed.
- Owl : The Owl* is a Human (!) with a special ability. During each
night, the moderator calls the phase of the Owl, who chooses a person.
During the day, play proceeds as normal until the voting for the two
nominees. Once all players have voted, the moderator announces the
name of the person chosen by the Owl, who automatically becomes
the second nominee for lynching, ahead of the others. If the person
chosen by the Owl was one of the two nominees, then the preference
of the Owl does not change anything.
(*translator's note: “Gufo” (Owl) in Italian is also a person who brings
bad luck there are untranslatable puns throughout).
- Freemasons : they are two Humans who know each other's role.
During the first night, the Moderator calls their phase: the Freemasons
open their eyes and recognize each other. The Freemasons must be
added as a pair to the deck, not singularly.
- The Notary : The Notary is a human with a special ability: he collects the dead characters' will.
Each eliminated player (either slaughtered or lynched) writes on a piece of paper his testament, e.g. "try to remember who I was accusing for many turns in a row!" or "Jack is not a werewolf!" Testaments are set aside, and kept secret until the Notary dies.
When the Notary dies, he must reveal his role, and will read aloud all the testaments.
Tip: obviously, innocent villagers' testaments will possibly contain important information, whereas the werewolves' ones could be wrong and deceptive.
- Werehamster : he plays on his own, and cannot be killed by
Werewolves (if Werewolves choose him as the victim, then nobody is
killed). With respect to the game end and to the Medium call, the
Werehamster is considered as a Human: if the Seer points at him
during the night, the Werehamster is killed, together with the player
chosen by the Werewolves. The Werehamster is the only winner if he
is still alive when the game ends.
- Mythomaniac : he plays, at the end of the second night, a special
phase: he has only one chance to point at another player still in play. If that
player is not a Werewolf or the Seer, then the Mythomaniac stays a
Human until the game ends. Otherwise, if that player is a Werewolf or the
Seer, he immediately takes on the same role of the appointed player. From
now on, the Mythomaniac opens his eyes at night when the moderator
calls the character whose ability he now matches; each decision is taken
together. The Seer sees the Mythomanic-werewolf as a Werewolf.
- El Diablo: he is a "tempter"... of his
own death! He plays for himself only, and
cannot be killed by the Werewolves (if he is
chosen during the night, then nobody dies).
El Diablo is seen as a Werewolf by the Seer.
He is the only winner if he manages to be
chosen by the Werewolves during the night
(but remember, he does not die!), and then
he is lynched before the end of the game.
If he is lynched before being chosen by the
Werewolves, he simply dies, and he is out of
the game.
Here are some more variants:
'Ghosts' variant
With this game variant, any player who has been slaughtered or
lynched becomes a “ghost”, and during the following days he may
vote for who has to be lynched. However, he may only vote to select
the nominees (he does not vote to elect the real lynching among
nominees). At night, ghosts close their eyes just like all the other
players: they do not have any special ability, regardless of the
character they were while alive. Remember that ghosts may not
comment or talk for the rest of the game!
The talking moderator. When the seer secretly points to a player at night, the moderator says out loud "Yes, that's a werewolf" or "No, that's not a werewolf." (Avoid "he" and "she"!) The other players still don't know who was pointing or who was pointed at, but they do know what the answer was. If it was "yes", the werewolves know the pressure is on... (Andrew Plotkin)
The mysterious set. The moderator takes the werewolves and the seer cards and set them aside. The moderator then takes as many villager cards as the number of players minus three, and adds to these cards all the special characters he wants. The moderator shuffles the deck, then discards face down a number of cards equal to the number of special character that have been added. Then, he takes the werewolves and the seer that have been set aside and adds them to the deck, completing it, and the game starts: players will not know if the medium or the bodyguard, etc. are actually playing!

Medium : he is a Human who can talk with the dead. At the beginning
of the night (starting from the second one), the Moderator calls his phase,
and shows him thumbs-up, if the last player lynched was a Werewolf,
thumbs-down if not.
I think roles should either be revealed on death or not, no need to create a new role to do the same
Possessed : he is a Human, but he sides with the Werewolves...
without knowing who they are! Therefore he wins if the Werewolves win.
Adds nothing
Bodyguard : he is a Human who protects a player of his choice,
each night. At night (starting with the second one), before the
Werewolves' phase, the Moderator calls the Bodyguard phase: the
Bodyguard points at another player. If the Werewolves choose that
player as the victim, he does not die, and nobody is killed.
Err.... Thats the GA right?
Owl : The Owl* is a Human (!) with a special ability. During eachnight, the moderator calls the phase of the Owl, who chooses a person.
During the day, play proceeds as normal until the voting for the two
nominees. Once all players have voted, the moderator announces the

chosen by the Owl was one of the two nominees, then the preference
of the Owl does not change anything.
(*translator's note: “Gufo” (Owl) in Italian is also a person who brings
bad luck there are untranslatable puns throughout).
We dont have two nominees... I dont think this role makes any sense under our rules
Freemasons : they are two Humans who know each other's role.
During the first night, the Moderator calls their phase: the Freemasons
open their eyes and recognize each other. The Freemasons must be
added as a pair to the deck, not singularly.
Eh? Like Lovers? Still dont see much point to it...
The Notary : The Notary is a human with a special ability: he collects the dead characters' will.
People are talking after death anyway so I wouldnt bother making this a role
Werehamster : he plays on his own, and cannot be killed by
Werewolves (if Werewolves choose him as the victim, then nobody is
killed). With respect to the game end and to the Medium call, the
Werehamster is considered as a Human: if the Seer points at him
during the night, the Werehamster is killed, together with the player
chosen by the Werewolves. The Werehamster is the only winner if he
is still alive when the game ends.
Lets keep gimmicky retarded crap to a minimum, eh?
Mythomaniac : he plays, at the end of the second night, a specialphase: he has only one chance to point at another player still in play. If that player is not a Werewolf or the Seer, then the Mythomaniac stays a
Human until the game ends.
Just a player who is undecided at the start? Doesnt add much but randomises the carefully balanced teams as lovingly crafted by Bunsy :p
- El Diablo: he is a "tempter"... of his own death! He plays for himself only, and cannot be killed by the Werewolves (if he is
chosen during the night, then nobody dies). El Diablo is seen as a Werewolf by the Seer. He is the only winner if he manages to be chosen by the Werewolves during the night (but remember, he does not die!), and then
he is lynched before the end of the game. If he is lynched before being chosen by the Werewolves, he simply dies, and he is out of
the game.
Wtf... why?
'Ghosts' variant
With this game variant, any player who has been slaughtered or
lynched becomes a “ghost”, and during the following days he may
vote for who has to be lynched. However, he may only vote to select
the nominees (he does not vote to elect the real lynching among
nominees). At night, ghosts close their eyes just like all the other
players: they do not have any special ability, regardless of the
character they were while alive. Remember that ghosts may not
comment or talk for the rest of the game!
So they basically just keep voting even when they die? Takes some of the fun out of it for the wolves if kills have no affect...
I like this idea actually... at the moment there is not much feedback so its too much like a random guessing game
And the last variant is just make everyone special I think... again thats gimmicky crap and we'll have none of that in our village thank you very much!
EDIT: I probably could have shortened those quotes :p

My suggestion would be to either keep day/nights more consistent or at least PM us when it changes, I'm not checking the thread every hour because people might speed up voting. :p
And probably enforce no-night-talking/no-dead-talking better, that was pretty crazy.

I'm still not sure between a player which knows the role of the deceased, and a player which simply knows the count of specials.
I do like the talking moderator though, I could simply announce in the morning what role the Seer had found.
Eh? Like Lovers? Still dont see much point to it...Not quite, when one lover dies, so does the other, but the masons are simply two humans who know who each other are.
People are talking after death anyway so I wouldnt bother making this a roleI might try and more strictly enforce the no-talking after death rule. As much as it's entertaining, it means that the dead are still influencing the view of those who are left alive. I think last words will have to be purely in-character, as it were.
Alien King
24 Jul 2008, 13:11
The idea of the Masons is one I don't like. It just speeds up a network forming between humans. It's an advantage they don't need.
The idea of Lovers is interesting though, as it's almost a handicap for the human team. Lovers know who they are, but it could be fun if one of them was possibly a wolf.
That is, the lovers know who they are, but don't know their alignment.

So do I, so that's definitely in. I'll wait and see how many people we get before deciding about more special roles.
I think that would be the best, as I doubt that we'll be many more players than last time to justify any additional special roles.
Also, we should just test the 'talking moderator' rule.
It could turn out that it doesn't really add more in a version played with PMs.

Seventeenlington was a small village in the province of Forumsville. The villagers were quiet bunch and, while friendly to outsiders, generally prefered to be left alone.
One morning the villagers woke up and found a note, it was on the ground. It was .. somewhat ominous. It read: "We are the Islington Werewolves, we have bitten, in secret, several of your villagers. We intend to take over you village and claim it as a haven for ourselves, but to be sporting we have given you a chance and announced our arrival."
Quickly a meeting was organised between the villagers. It was decided that they would attempt to rid themselves of this threat by lynching anyone they suspected of being a werewolf, a foolproof plan!
PMs with you role have been sent out.
Day 1 has started! Apparently there's a tradition to vote for me to be lynched, rather than anyone who is playing. I'm not going to enforce that, but I do recommend against blindly lynching anyone.

And so it begins. The only people who have any clue so far are the werewolves, as they know who each other are, hence who the humans are. Pointing fingers at this stage of the game can only be either random guess, or werewolf trying to get a human killed.
I urge all humans to look back at my post, realise it is not in the slightest bit "mysterious", and see this as the weak excuse it is to vote for a human.

Over the course of the day a few accusations were made, but the majority of the villagers wanted to lynch MrBunsy, a known werewolf sympathiser. Night fell, the villagers went to bed, and MrBunsy swung gently in the breeze.

I was planning just to wait for a while to see if they would send the PM, as it happens they have.
Twas on a Monday morning the gas man came to call. The villagers awoke and ventured outside to find one of those metal food containers they'd seen in the posh restaurants in the city. Curious, they picked up the lid to look inside. Oh dear, the head of Paul.Power was resting on a plate, not a particularly tasty dish.
Night 1 is over, Paul.Power has been killed and the Seer has found a Human.
Day 2 starts henceforth.
Got him, it was shadowmoon. There was only myself, MrBunsy, and him from this game online. Plasma showed up about 8:50 though.
Edit: Also, shadowmoon was viewing a user profile just when MrBunsy received the PM.
Therefore, i vote shadowmoon for the lynching, as i'm more certain of him than yauhui.
Edit: Actually, I'm voting M3ntal. Firstly because he's been too over-defensive in that big post a while back, and secondly because, being a Werewolf last round, I know well that Bunsy prefers to wait a bit between getting the PM and posting the night results, so that this kind of thing doesn't happen.
Edit: Changed to Shadowmoon.

I spotted him waiting, and decided to also wait and catch them in the act. Look at it this way, i saw you come online and do a forum search for something or other while i was waiting as well. Why would i have bothered to check what you were up to?

That doesn't make you any less of a werewolf. Maybe you want to get rid of Shadowmoon from your team (like, who wouldn't? :p) while at the same time making yourself seem like a regular human...
Anyway, can't we cut a deal with one of them werewolfs? Like, we offer him inmunity and a live-long suply of our livestock to feed in and perhaps our elderly and/or sick every now and then if he tells us who his teammates are?

Didn't Paul.Power say something after he died tho?Bit of a difference though.
I said I was human after I was killed by the werewolves. I didn't want my human allies to start worrying that they'd already lost the Seer, GA or Priest. The only way I could have been a werewolf is if the werewolves were very stupid.
But you said you were human after being lynched by the humans. So there's no real reason to say it other than either "well, our team sucks" or "haha I'm a werewolf faking it".
quakerworm
29 Jul 2008, 10:47
no difference at all. human team is meant to play "uninformed". they shouldn't know if they lost a priest, seer, etc. you are providing that information.
there are variations where the alignment, or even class, is revealed after death. however that is a further handicap to the werewolf side. if the game is balanced from start to have identities hidden through to the end, revealing identities shifts balance, and makes the game unfair to one side.
now, it is true that the dead person might still lie. but that's not the design of the game. this is a game of bluff and misinformation. part of this game is silencing these who are making things difficult for you. werewolves can silence a particularly vocal player to be able to influence the crowd more during lynching votes. they do so by killing that player. so once again, dead people being quiet becomes matter of the game's balance. if you start talking about the game while dead, you effect the outcome, therefore making it unfair for the side that killed you to keep you quiet.
so, anyways, if you want the game to be interesting, you should not make any game-state-related statements after your death. or if you are not playing for that matter. "final words" are meant to be a gimmick that doesn't affect the game flow.

It's a tie between MtlAngelus and super_frea. Both have only 1 phantom votes, but MtlAngelus only didn't vote yesterday through mis-timing, and also voted on day 1, so I'm going to have super_frea lynched. If ShadowLord doesn't vote tomorrow I'll get him replaced by someone else.
It was a long day of arguing and ideas and eventually a tie was reached. The villagers, however, didn't want to lynch two of their number at once, so plumbed for super_frea.

edit:
You know, the odds that one of the 4 people that have voted for me is a wolf is pretty high, it's almost certain that at least one if them is a wolf. And a wolf wouldn't vote to lynch one of their kin, so I'm obviously not a wolf.
Also notice how M3ntal, AK and Philby have coincidentally voted for the same people since day 1. I find that really suspicious.
That, and the wolves must be active people. Why would a wolf conspire to kill someone but avoid participating on lynch-voting during the day, risking himself a phantom vote? Clearly if the user is inactive during the day it's most likely he is also inactive during the night... yet wolves are killing people.
I just leave this to the consideration of the rest of the village before they choose to vote. If they do get around to vote, that is. There's a lot of apparently inactive members in this community...

Certainly easy enough to do, although I probably won't be able to host another one for a few weeks. After the A-level results (14th) I'm off on holiday for a while and won't have any internet access. Lynch bonz.
It was another long day of, well, not very much really. But shadowlord seemed to have attracted the attention of the majority of the villagers. They dragged him off, ready to get rid of him, when suddenly Bonz, GrimOswald, philby and pickleworm leapt out of nowhere, grew claws and tore pore ol' shadowlord to pieces. "You fools! You've been lynching each other the entire week! The reign of the wolves has begun!".
Well then, Shadowlord it is. To your peril :p
There are only eight players left, and 4 of them are wolves, therefore wolves win.
Very well played by the wolves, who diverted votes away from themselves remarkably well. There were quite a sizeable group of humans working together, but you didn't really appear to co-ordinate. So, yeah. I've not really seen a game go quite like this before. I hope you enjoyed it anyway.
Bonz, GrimOswald, Philby and Pickleworm were the wolves. M3ntal was the priest, Plasma was the Seer and Robowurmz was the GA. The night 3 save was robowurmz saving himself.
Oh, and the PM M3ntal saw Shadowmoon send? It wasn't to me :P I'd been waiting for Plasma to send me his Seer's PM.
Yeah, Plasma "saw" me the next night, and explained it was his PM you were waiting for. Apologies to Shadowmoon.
I think we benefited the most from the initial disputes among the humans. Accusations were flung against each other before the game has even started.
Also, the phantom votes probably came in handy during the lynching nominations. :)

Interesting.
Congratulations you bloodthirsty hounds.
Our main strategy was mostly to kill of the players that didn't participate in the votings, didn't post at all or were not the target of others.
Also, we killed Paul.Power in the first night to shock the village somewhat, losing their best scientist that early.
He should have hurried up with the development of his anti-werewolf ointment.

well played, guys. hopefully, i won't miss the start of the next one.
Yeah, we (the group who I found innocent) only realised that the quiet people were the wolves when it was too late.

*Shakes hands with fellow wolves* Well played guys.
As bonz said, our main strategy was killing off low-profile players (And Paul went first because he's my archenemy he's too smart to keep around). Alien King was actually killed for the dual reason of my suspicions that he was the seer, which turned out to be a load of bullocks. :p (I DID actually suspect Plasma as well, but I suspected AK more)
Honestly, it was bonz who ended up making most of the final decisions, with me over-thinking everything before that to help him decide. :p
By the way, the wolf we knew about via the seer was Philby.
And.. we didn't lynch him?

I'll vote Shadowlord then, just because.
Shadowlord. Bandwagon, yeah!
That, uh... that wasn't particularly smart of you guys.

I was screwed when i got over-defensive anyway.
Now i understand this game a bit more i'll hopefully not make the same mistake.

Now everyone's going to be so paranoid about the quiet ones next game :p
A great tip to avoid those useless accusations:
Switch to invisible mode in your User CP, so no one will see you sending PMs.
That, uh... that wasn't particularly smart of you guys.
By the time the Shadowlord landslide started, I knew that there'd be no way it would switch to Philby, but would make it all too obvious to the Wolves which guy's the Seer/with the Seer.

I love how I lasted 3 whole days even though my internet hasn't been working for a week and a half. Apologies about that.
Oh yes and my final words will be...
Pigeon paste.

I knew the wolves would win. :p
That, uh... that wasn't particularly smart of you guys.Of the 6 people Plasma and myself didn't know about, 2 were human and 4 were werewolves. Shadowlord already had 2 votes, and 1 each for GrimOswald and yauhui. We knew yauhui was human, so a guess between Shadowlord and GrimOswald was all we could do because if we both voted for anyone else Shadowlord would still have been lynched due to phantom votes. We were pretty much dead anyway so getting lucky on the 2/3 chance was our only hope of bringing it back.

Could someone explain phantom votes to me again?
Could someone explain phantom votes to me again?
The idea was that if you didn't vote for a lynching you'd have a phantom vote placed against you every lynching. Each phantom vote counts for half a normal vote, so it was meant to encourage everyone into voting every day.
You could still have all voted for philby though, it would have identified who you were to the wolves, but you would also outnumber them.
Next time, remove both phantom voting and end the days/nights on time. If a seer/GA doesn't vote, pick someone completely random, and lynch a random person even if nobody votes.
