There will always be programs that will occasionally launch a pop-up during gameplay and crash the game...NOT!
On My Vista Laptop, I am able to fully minimize WWP and then re-maximize it with this step-by step procedure.
(Should Work in XP too)
1. Open Task Manager
2. Open "Display Settings" and set your screen resolution to the same resolution as WWP (640x480, 800x600, or 1024x768)
2.5. If you are afraid for your desktop icons being messed up, you shouldn't be: Quick Desktop icon layout restore in XP and Vista (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/save-and-restore-desktop-icon-layout-in-windows-vista/)
3. Open WWP (I suggest you launch it at /high priority, and do NOT use this one! (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showthread.php?t=36539) it will only cause issues with this, because it terminates Windows Explorer.)
4. To test this, press the "Windows Key", which I hope you have disabled, in which case press "ctrl+esc" which should do the same.
Then WWP should be minimized halfways. Try to alt-tab to task manager, and then, right click on "T-17" and click minimize, which should get you back to your desktop.
After you are done with your desktop work (dealing with Pop-ups, etc) just go back to task manager, and right click on "WWPGame" and then choose "Bring to front".
After you are done playing, you can return your resolution back to normal, if you choose to do so. And if your desktop icons are messed up, refer to step 2.5!
Please note, that WWP may restart during this, I think only if you were at the main menu, so you better be quick!
Since I am running WWP at High-Priority, I did not get ANY messed up graphics.
WARNINGS:
Setting the Screen Resolution higher than WWP's maximum, 1027x768, may result in catastrophic consequences (to the game) and crash it.
Not running the game in a high priority may result in graphical artifacts.
