Yes, Team17 do make more games than just Worms and Lemmings, y'know!
I suspect that it's going to be another low-budget game though.

Is this a revival of an old series, or is it a new game that they have never done before?

Just curious.

Leisure Suit Larry is an adventure game series. T17 don't do adventures. It's also what some people would call a sex game. Not the brutal kind, but I'd say shock was in order. Also, did you miss the part where Spadge says it's been in the works for two years? Doesn't sound too low-budget to me, especially with Vivendi involved.

Is this a revival of an old series, or is it a new game that they have never done before?

Revival of an old series, Leisure Suit Larry has been around since '91.

Dammit you've already gotten rid of Al Lowe, why won't you let it die? :(

Better not be another mini game collection...

The date on the blog entry is Jan 17 (today). If nothing has been mentioned previously, then there would be no Wikipedia entry or such.

I can think of three words that sum up how I think about this:
What the ****.

I've adeed it to the Dream17 Softography+. The game is called Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, and it's very difficult for me to get excited about. What's interesting is that it doesn't look like a low-budget affair, either - the screenshots looks rather detailed and the voice cast is incredible:

Jay Mohr (Last Comic Standing), Dave Attell (Insomniac), Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie), Carmen Electra (Starsky and Hutch), Artie Lange (Mad TV), Patrick Warburton (Family Guy), Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Nikki Cox (Las Vegas), Peter Graves (Mission Impossible), Jane Lynch (The 40 Year Old Virgin) and Josh Keaton (The Spectacular Spider-Man) as the voice of Larry Loveage [sic].

I visted T17 about a year ago and this was one of the game's they were working on. I was'nt allowed to say anything about it of course it was still in it primary phase
and the one thing I saw was that they were working on some car's model's. Precisely one guy was donig a design for the game and had a 3d model of car on a computer with the texter ball of the car (rust and lighting effect) the look is kind of 30's cartoon style with 50's America muscle car all, the other stuff I don't know there are some screenshot's on IGN.COM
also an interview with one of the Producer's (nobody from T17 though) it look's good and it's something that T17 hav'nt done before and took some time on this one two year's so keep looking out for more news on this one

They may have tryed to go 3D with Worms and that did'nt go well, so let's see what the can do this time.

But it's also not new. And if we want to get picky, none of the games Team17 have knocked out over the past five years are based on concepts created in-house.

You know, that's Spadge's blog. If Spadge says it, it's true. Unless it's April 1st.

Spadge
18 Jan 2008, 07:49
It's true.

The script is actually rather good and genuinely funny. Yes, it's something different and 'something blue' :-) It's more USA mature comedy rather than bawdy/smutty sex game and its not a collection of mini-games, it's a 3rd person action adventure set in an around a parody of the movie industry with missions and free-roaming environment. The tech is Unreal3.

It's a real departure for us and yes, we've been working on it 2 years. For us, it's big-budget.

There are more announcements to come this year, but our work like this should be expected from now on.

18 Jan 2008, 11:42
hm, I feel a bit sad, no fresh Worms...

...but I can understand, that Team17 wanted to do something different. Programming Worms all the time is probably less funny than playing Worms all the time - so they are programming a sexy adventure with boobs and stuff, that is what i call a logical progression. :)

Indeed, I have played Larry! They really should do better than Larry 8 (omg), but Larry 7:Love for Sail was a good one with excellent humor, I made it to the captain's cabin.

Ahhhhh.... but it wasn't created by them.Lemmings.

And, as Ben points out, Worms. Given it was created by Andy Davidson.

Has to be said, though, this is a real WHAT?! moment. I spent a good deal of last night talking to Dan, Euan, Kieran, the other Ben and Matty (SupSuper, Worm Mad, Melon, Pooka and worMatty respectively) about how WHAT?! it was. And trying to work out what this guy (http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/846/846052p1.html) was on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that you guys will pull your weight in the bits of it that you're doing. But still... WHAT?!

Spadge
18 Jan 2008, 15:08
Lemmings.

And, as Ben points out, Worms. Given it was created by Andy Davidson.

Actually you're stretching the point there. Worms was a Team17 game (developed & published). Yes Andy had the concept and had a part-finished Amiga title. It was embellished during his time here at T17, but Team17 have developed the title since then (well over 50-60 people being involved) - Andy being a large part of that for the best part of 4 years until he decided to move on - but many aspects of the game from Worms 2 onwards were not down to Andy (in the interest of fairness).

KRD

... not a collection of mini-games...

Phew. Good luck with the project.

I'm actually very pleased Worms seems to have been put on hold for now. Means I won't have to jump out of the chair and preach about ye olde spirit of the true Worms experience as often. Not that anyone listens when I do. :p

Anyway, since there will be some mini games in there according to the IGN [blargh] interview, it'd be great if they weren't just unconnected repetitive filler like they usually are in "modern" adventure games. Of course the genre needs to move with the times to be financially successful, but know that adventure game enthusiasts can get really nasty when someone underestimates them with, say, a dumbed down sequel to their favourite series. A description the previous Larry game certainly fits, from what I've read about it.

On a lighter note, the openness of the game sounds rather interesting. Hopefully the storyline won't suffer from the approach.

All I have to say, is that the results of the project will be real interesting; this is something I would have never guessed at all.

Nothing like a little departure from the norm to show they're a capable team.

Hoping this title isn't as 'mature' as the previous Leisure Suits though, they're hard enough to find as-is in stores.

bloopy
19 Jan 2008, 15:40
I know what to say. I have spent countless hours playing both Team17 games and LSL games, so there is about a 100% chance that I would buy this one. With all the console hype over the Wii and competitors, the PC game market has almost gone to sleep. The last new PC game I got was Trackmania United, over a year ago. Though I guess there isn't much variety in the games I'm interested in.

I would like to hope that it was going to be just as mature as the previous games, because that's part of the fun, but I'll save the effort, because we live in an extremely politically correct time and I already know that it's not going to be. It would be nice if there was simply a politically incorrect content filter on life, so I could just turn it off. :p

to be honest, it doesn't seem that for a departure, really. Its very much in-keeping with with the team 17 approach to games which has always had a sense of humour.

what would be a shocking departure is if T17 suddenly announced they were making Bland WW2 FPS 3

It's a good idea for them to take time off Worms. It'll help new ideas for the next installment percolate for a bit in their heads.

Now to see if it'll be as good as the old Sierra ones. Sierra had great adventure games.

...but LucasArts was even better! Anyone a Monkey Island fan? :D

quakerworm
7 Aug 2008, 04:08
there are plenty of monkey island fans here. i really enjoyed the series. i know s2k has mentioned it. a few other people whom i don't recall in particular. so yeah, definitely.

i really don't know what happened to the genre. ok, yeah, it didn't work so well in 3d ('true' 3d, anyhow). but that can't be the only reason, can it? fortunately, sam and max got revived. but full throttle project got canceled. and absolutely no good original adventure games in many years.

bonz
7 Aug 2008, 11:22
fortunately, sam and max got revived.
Well, only after Lucas Arts cancelled it and Tell Tale Games took over a few years later.
Still great games though.

I think Tell Tale should use that engine to revive the Monkey Island games.
Probably with the help of the original writers/inventors of Guybrush, LeChuck and kin.

StoneFrog
9 Aug 2008, 21:56
TellTale has potential. LucasArts said they may return to their adventure franchises, but not until 2010 or so. By then though, half their target audience won't even know about these ancient "Monkey Island" games.

I'd like to see Ron Gilbert do his version of MI3, though I did enjoy it despite him departing from the company.

Squirminator2k
9 Aug 2008, 22:30
Actually given some of the recent decisions LucasArts have made (firing almost all of their internal development team and beginning to focus more on licensing Lucas-owned brands and franchises out to other developers) I would be surprised if LucasArts existed in any solid capacity by 2012. Mayan apocalypse notwithstanding.

StoneFrog
9 Aug 2008, 23:16
Ron Gilbert should make his own games, or try to partner up with TellTale - or, in the least, write books or something to continue the story.

I hate MI4 and don't even consider it canon (it contradicted much of the story in the earlier games).

Squirminator2k
10 Aug 2008, 04:36
I agree, but the rights are all tied up with LucasArts. Ron will likely never get to make "his" Monkey Island 3.

And, in fairness, as much as I enjoyed CMI I still see the ending of LeChuck's Revenge to be the natural end of the series. A lot of MI fans get really annoyed by the ending, but there's plenty of evidnece in the first and second games that suggests that Guybrush's world is imaginary.

StoneFrog
10 Aug 2008, 04:58
Yeah. Though at the end of MI2 Elaine says "I hope Guybrush wasn't put under some kind of SPELL".

And as MI1+2 are by Ron Gilbert, and since he wanted to do a third game, perhaps it really wasn't just his imagination. That or it's more imaginary adventures.

MI2 is my favorite in the series, though I don't have much against the final rendition of MI3 storywise. My only complaint was it was too short.

Squirminator2k
10 Aug 2008, 05:22
The lightning eyes/spell comment at the end of MI2 was put in at LucasArts' request so that they could make a third game if they wanted to (and they did). I'm quite confident that Ron Gilbert intended the story to be finished with MI2, even if he has since come up with an idea for a third chapter.
