View Full Version : Worms World Party compatibility list.
Hello
Help needed! I though we can find that usefull. Let's make a list of notebooks at which our wormy game works fine. I'm looking for a notebook to buy and i want my worms running on it :) Tell us your mashines.
Brand - model - OS - graphic card - chipset.
Cheers
Marcin
In my opinion, the most important thing is the graphics chip.
It needs to be one that has its own video RAM, i.e. does NOT share it with the main RAM.
The most notorious evildoer are those Intel graphics chips.
Get a notebook that has either ATI or Nvidia graphics chips. Prefarably the mobile versions that consume less energy and get less hot.
You're right, graphic card is most important here but what about chipset (i mean, does it count?).
As far i got two notebooks, people from xtc league helped me a bit:
VBI FL90 with 8600GT 256MB
HP dv6700t with 8400M GS.
As for notebooks in general, I highly suggest you buy a good brand one, which is known for good customer and support service.
Optimally you'd buy one where there is a service center in your town or surrounding area.
Also, pay some more money to extend the service warranty for a few years.
Some retailers also offer special insurances for electronic goods that cover theft and damage.
Ok thank you for your suggestions. But i'm looking for a specific models (which i don't know yet). Almost every notebook will be ok for my needs but i have to be able to run worms on it. I'm a freak that's all :)

The best way to figure out if it will work is to do some research on the internet. More and more video cards are being made now that no longer support DirectDraw, which is what W:A/WWP use. Do a google search to find out if the video card & drivers support it or not.
Thank You Etho. It seams that it's more sofisticated that i though. Ok here's what i found (more info you're giving me - more questions that i have to ask hmm).
1st i read some about DirectDraw at wiki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectDraw
As of DirectX version 8.0, DirectDraw was merged into a new package called DirectX Graphics, which is really just Direct3D with a few DirectDraw API additions. DirectDraw can still be used by programmers, but they must use older DirectX interfaces (DirectX 7 and below).
As i understand well - any graphic card made nowdays should support the DirectDraw API. But i checked that and i didn't found any confirmation or negation of that.
As far i know worms are working at HP dv6700t with 8400M GS. I can't find any info about DirectDraw at manufacturer site or http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVidia-GeForce-8400M-GS.3709.0.html also i can't find any info about 8600GT installed in VBI FL90
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-8600M-GT.3986.0.html.
Actually i found only one graphic card where DirectDraw is mentioned and it's
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Extreme-Graphics-2.2179.0.html
Now i get really confused and i don't know how to find that info.
Edit: I have a theory. Maybe it's not the fault of supporting of DirectDraw by any card. I think the reason why worms don't want to work at some cards are drivers.
Actually maybe it's a matter of one (max 3) files: ddraw.dll (the most important one); ddraw.vxd; ddraw.16.dll. The ddraw.dll in my home PC is 5.3.2600.2180 version. Asap i'll check the version of ddraw.dll at my gf notebook at which worms don't want to work under XP (they run only under 98se). If version is older i'll try to replace that file with mine version.
Btw, if worms work under win98se and doesn't under winXP (at same notebook) it's not the fault of the card for 100%. The reason lies in drivers and/or in some files.

When it says DirectDraw has been merged with Direct3D, it really means that the abilities of DirectDraw have been implemented into Direct3D. They are 2 different things though. DirectDraw hasn't been included in DirectX since DirectX 8.0.
Check if a card supports DirectDraw by doing a google search like "geforce 6600 directdraw". (or whatever card you are researching)
Sorry but this is a pain in the ass with finding anything usefull with that method.
Tryed few combinations and i only get random stuff or nothing or i get results with PC graphic cards coz they're named same (or similiar and someone misspeled them).
I wish someone playing worms at notebook (more people - better way of choosing best mashine for me) will share with me with his model. This is what i would like to see.
I have a warning for you:

Don't buy that HP laptop that Matso mentioned!
It obviously has a keyboard lockup. Not nice.
You might want to use some keyboard testing software to check how many keys you can hold down simultaneously without locking up.
The cursor/arrow keys in conjunction with the space bar are especially important (roping!).
(That is, if the retailer lets you do that...)
Ooo that's something.
I'm using kb without 3keys lock for playing only. Also i made a small list at our clan forum about 2 years ago :) We know the thing allready but thank you.
I'm using kb without 3keys lock for playing only.
My current keyboard is a Logitech Media Elite Keyboard, which only locks up with 7 keys.
Also i made a small list at our clan forum about 2 years ago :) We know the thing allready but thank you.
Well, add that small list to the one that Gnork made, if your models are not already listed.
Allright i'll add them.
3kl - that's how we call it here but actually i can press as many buttons at once as i wish without hearing a single beep :). I'm using ZBoard kb.
I have yet to see a laptop that doesn't have the 3 key lock.
If you're into roping, they're really the last thing you want to run Worms games on, unless you can find one with a keyboard made with this in mind. Or if you're comfortable attaching an external keyboard to it, which I'm not.
I got myself a nice LG R500, with a nVidia 8600M GS, a T7500, 2 GB RAM DDR667 and Vista Home Premium... runs great :D
That's something, lucky you :) Thanks!
So far i collected:
VBI Compal FL90 with nVidia 8600GT 256MB
HP dv6700t with nVidia 8400M GS
Dell Inspiron 510m (don't know the spec yet)
LG R500 with nVidia 8600M GS (worms works under Vista!)
"Gimme more" xD
i, the owner of the LG, started a thread about how i fixed the vista pallete issue... take a look :-/
I wonder if that works, nobody answered yet.

I have a Toshiba A200 1AH, and so does my brother. While I have no problem running WWP, he cannot. I believe that it's not about the pc specs
