Yeah and I would like a HL2 mmorpg... oh and a StarCraft based mmorpg... and a Age of Empires based mmorpg... and a Halo based mmorpg... and a Mario Bros. based mmorpg... and... you know.
Thing is, with so many awesome mmorpg's out there, there would be no time to play them all. So let's just stick with having a few awesome ones. :)
there are space craft ones and one close to age of empires it called tribal wars
There are hundreds of MMORPGs in the world. Some are good, some suck and some are unbelievably expensive. I play a few but if you want a site with good MMORPGs, visit http://www.gpotato.com
A worms MMORPG would be silly really wouldn't it?
If you could turn a turn-based game into an MMORPG, and find someone willing to do it, let me know.

Someone did try to make a worms RPG, actually.
RPG, yes.
MMORPG? Now that's just daft.

Hmm what about an offline MMORPG? :p

Actually... http://www.wormsrenegade.com/
Yeah, but that's not really based around the worms games is it? It's a MMORPG where the characters are worms. I don't think that's what this thread is about.
Creating an MMORPG based upon the worms games is pointless. It wouldn't work. Transferring turn based strategy to an MMORPG cannot work, in my opinion.
And I don't want to hear any "But Worms Blast is a different genre!" comments.
Renegade was planned to play a bit like Worms, though, last I checked. Upon starting a fight, you and your opponent went to a new screen where you'd lob grenades and fire shells at each other in a side view, the success of which was determined in part by the usual strategic skill and in part by your character's statistics. I don't really know how far that system was developed, though.
But anyway, imagine a similar concept done by a serious software company like Team17, with help of an enthusiastic group of artists and an interested community with the ability to alter the world slightly, wage wars between guilds and host their own events. Instead of WormNet, you'd have a large 2D Nifflasesque world [see signature], divided into many maps [some small, some larger than a single screen, some cavern, some open] between which you would be able to travel by reaching an entrance/exit on their sides [only able to reach some exits after having mastered the Backflip skill or having the Parachute equipped, for example]. Upon meeting another worm or an AI monster wandering the world, you'd walk into them, move into turn-based mode on the same map with the fighting conditions determined by environmental factors [indestructible terrain if the piece of map's made of rock] and play the battle out just like you would on WA. After the battle, the losing team is taken to the closest hospital/temple where they can recover while the winners enjoy the earned EXP, determined by the difference between their level and that of the losing team.
Of course these are just some out-of-context details off the top of my head, but I certainly don't think it impossible. Or boring, for that matter, assuming it was designed carefully. In fact it sounds easier to maintain and keep interesting than your regular three dimensional MMORPG, because adding new locations would be a matter of 2D drawing.
And sure turn-based can work in an MMORPG. Just have a look at Dofus, one of the most popular MMORPG's out there. The Final Fantasy Tactics approach works great with living players on your side in my opinion. Not to mention battles between players and guilds, with living people on both sides.
Well I guess I take it all back. I do like the sound of that.

I was being sarcastic. The tittle says "online mmorpg", which indeed mentions online twice. So I was poking fun at that.

Since the only thing the Worms series really needs is level grinding! :p
Lop of the "RP" and you might have something interesting. Like, a map that would actually be a planet! With hundreds of people fighting on it at once, and... uh... nevermind.

that's just about the worst idea ever. in order to adapt a concept to a MMORPG you need to have *characters*, and the worms series DOESN'T have characters per se. what it does have is a bunch of low-poly blobs with eyes shooting missiles at each other, but WITH OVER 9000 BONES IN MAYA! how would that work in a MMORPG context?
also, you basically want to give team17 the license to CHARGE people for worms hats. if i were you i would carefully consider the implications before making any further proposals.

Characters can be made based on weapons. You could have a Heavy Machine worm, (zook, grenade), a Gunner (shotgun, minigun) a Ninja (rope, bow), a support class that uses utilities, a Summoner who summons sheeps, pidgeons, cows, whatever, etc etc.
Not saying it would work, I just don't see any of the reasons people mention to be valid reasons as to why it wouldn't work.

no, no. that might not be a bad idea. mmo worms might actually work. maybe not quite like that, but i think this is definitely one idea that shouldn't be just discarded. of course, you'd have to find ways to stream only needed segments of terrain. also, you'd need ways for teams/clans/whatever to reconstruct portions of terrain, or have it regenerate over time. so there are a lot of questions and challenges, for sure, but it is something that t17 should think about.
edit: i think the biggest challenge is to come up with the scheme where you keep the turn based style of combat, while allowing multiple battles to commence at once. i don't think anyone would be happy if they'd have to wait for hundreds if not thousands of other players to make their moves.

I wouldn't be amazingly suprised if T17 is already on this idea, it's probably called Worm Fortress Classic 2 and to be bundled with along with Worms Mayham in the Hat Box collection along with a ground breaking game known as "Holes in the Ground".
CREATIVITY!
MMORPGs are awful waste of life. Pure lvling, killing, playing for hours just to get stuff and players yelling "My char is ***zors, dead blade, shiny armor, super strong".

Oh lord, you're right! It's essentially just a metaphor for life!
