View Full Version : The RED RING OF DEATH! [XBox 360]

Hey my little wormy buddies, Here's something to talk about....
The Xbox 360, when it was first released, and even the first 2 years of shipments, contained the dreaded overheating issues (to name one of many)
Which caused the dreaded : RED RING OF DEATH...
Now as all of you know, i want to buy a Xbox 360 on december the 1st 2007.
So please can you guys tell me, DOES THE RED RING OF DEATH, still exist, or has microsoft finally fixed all the problems...
Im just worried i spend all this money on the 360, and within a few days, i get this dreaded RED RING OF DEATH....
(i seen some funny videos on YOUTUBE. showing guys fixing the RED RING OF DEATH, by wrapping their 360 in 2 towels, waiting 20 minutes, completly overheating the machine, and then it WORKS....
I would not have believed it, if i didn't see it on YOUTUBE...
So how is that possible???? i thought overheating it, was the cause of the RED RING OF DEATH....
So tell me, are any 360 models in 2007 still giving people FREEZES/RRODEATH?
Microsoft hasn't fixed that problems yet. Their only actions are offering a 3-year warranty for those Xbox 360s with the red ring of death.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems
There's a fix, but this will void your warranty.

Ahh. The towel trick. It only works for a few hours and your 360 will go dead back again.

But this guy says it'll last for 4 days or so.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA... that really f****** Pi**** me the f*** off.
sorry but that is so DAMN ANNOYING. Microsoft you bunch of NOOBS!!!!!
but even so... im still going to buy one...
Hopefully the newer models (after june 2007) should have the better HEATSINKS... and hopefully better SOLDER. man this is frustrating...
I wonder if that was only isolated to the USA & UK... (i live in South Africa)
I got a few guys, who play 16 hours a day, for the past year and a half...
And they say it works perfect.... So im pretty confused...
Well hopefully mine (when i get it Dec 1st 2007) wont give me problems, but i already spoke to my local retailer, and they say, if red ring of death appears, they will swop it, for a new one, over the counter... no waiting period.
Which is good.
Anyway YauHui thanks alot dude. Your info is very helpful. :o ;)
Has anyone else got a "NEW" model (after june 2007) and does it work fine for you????
anytime, buddy, anytime.
and oh, btw, i'm not an xbox owner :(

Yeah!
...
Buy PS3! :p
The Red Ring of Death signifies a hardware failure of any kind, not just overheating. So yes, it does still exist.

It mostlydepends on how well-ventilated the playing room is.

I got the red ring of death once. All I had to do was push the DVD Drive Button.
It worked.

The 33% failure rate is the reason I'm hopefully going to get a refurbished/brand new 360 in the near future for very little.

Calm down, buddy. one of my friend told me he's had the xbox360 for a while and he says it's never happend in his life. as far as I know it's a rare thing. the 360 is still worth it:)

Dude. 33% failure rate.
One in three.
There's a hell of a lot of people on their second or third 360 already.
The newer units are suposed to have a much better chance of not dieing, but damn.

I seriously doubt Microsoft made it so their systems would die on purpose. :p

Well from what i understand, Microsoft got china to MASS produce the first few shipments of XBOX 360, they barely put any thermal paste under the cpu and gpu, plus they used the wrong/CHEAP solder. which gets brittle and breaks fairly easy....
I also heard that the XBOX 360/HALO 3 bundle, with the special camoflauge design, is the best to buy right now, Because apparently they decided to add the better and bigger heatsink... Plus better solder.... so they say...
Well im gonna buy one, i just hope it works until GTA IV comes out next year.... hehe

I doubt that. If 1 in 3 360s died then that would have been on the main evening news and I would remember it. They'd have been recalled. One in ten is a bad product. Do you have a source for this number -- that's the kind of number that needs one.

there was a poll on.....I think it was gamespot, that asked 360 owners how many systems they'd gone through. if I remember correctly, about 20% of the voters were still on their first, and the rest were between 2-4 with a decently large portion in the 5+ region of the poll (not many, granted, but far more than there should have been).

Oh, well in that case it must be true...

Oh, well in that case it must be true...yes yes, I was just stating at least where the infromation came from :p
doesn't NECESSARILY mean it's true, granted, but typically things that spread around like that at least have a pretty close relationship with the truth. since 90% of the internet's inhabitants are overly-pedantic (not sure if that's redundant) teenagers with nothing better to do than prove people wrong. so I wouldn't hold to say that it's an exact figure, but "about 1/3" is probably reasonably close to correct.
90% of the internet's inhabitants are overly-pedantic
Hmm... By any chance, did this figure also come from the internet?

I'm guessing that statistic followed the "90% of all statistics are made up" rule. :p

No, they don't. They met the truth once in an elevator in 1921 and didn't say anything except blurting out "hey i saw you on the news lol" just before the truth left. The truth never said two words to them and has forgotten they exist, meanwhile the way they tell it you'd think theywere the truth's best man.
The internet lies to you. Check Snopes if you don't believe me -- so-called 'common knowledge' is far more common than it is knowledgable.

The failure rate is very, very high. Hence the extended 3-year waranty.

they really should have waited and not rushed it to market - this is probably going to be seen as one of those classic screwups in business textbooks 10 years down the road

i also saw on the net... tons of guys talking about 33% failure rate....
So i have also seen it too... not saying its COMPLETLY true though...
Alot of guys saying theirs broke, are just PS3 owners... trying to bash the
Xbox 360... but it is true that LOTS of guys had problems...
But then again, what can you trully believe on the net....

INDEED, this 33% failure rate could easily be propagnada started by either of the xbox rival companies.
Though i did see this figure on wikipedia last night i think...so, damn it must be true.

Yes, the figure is up on Wikipedia, the Online Encyclopedia that Anyone Can Edit, so it must be true!
