View Full Version : A DS,Wii or a Computer?

Well,as the title says,should I buy a Nintendo DS,a Nintendo Wii or a new computer(if so,which kind)?
A DS would be fun,as I could bring it with me when I'm away.
A Wii would be fun too, with the way it works and such,I mostly want it to be able to play SSBB when it comes out though.
A Computer seems like the most useful choice,as the only PC that is truly mine is an old Windows 98. Other than that we got a Windows XP,and a...Windows Millennium(I think...). I want a computer that I don't need to share, basically.
Well, what do you recommend the most?
Well, you don't really give us much information, this is the kind of question you should be able to answer yourself because they're three different things, they're not a PS3, 360 or Wii, they're a handheld videoconsole, a normal videoconsole and a personal computer.
Anyway, I'd go with a PC, as good as money allows.
PC can do more, and in my opinion has the best games. But if you just want games and not to spend too much, I'd go for a Wii.
Building your own PC is (probably) the cheapest way to get exactly what you want.
A PC is definately the best option first, so when you get wi-fi capabilities you can get the Wii/DS. I myself have the luck of having all 3:).
It depends on whether you have a personal/family computer or not. If you already do, go for a Wii; otherwise, get a PC.
I voted for PC.
Like Dunkar, I have all 3.
My friend has a Nintendo Ds and Wii. I play it all the time. Ds is nice too. But wii is more fun. You need to move and not just push some buttons. Wii is my choise.

PC..don't get the wii.

It depends on how fast your shared PC runs. If a PC is to slow (take my grandma's PC for an example) it makes me so mad because it can't play anything! so if the shared PC is slow or breaking down then I would go with that choice, but if not.... I've heard the wii is great!
Does anybody else notice something familiar about the start of this thread's title?

Depends on a number of things. Personally, I'd go for a Wii just because it's so ridiculously cheap compared to a PC -- you could skimp on the hard disk and graphics card and buy a Wii with the difference. Besides which, a PC can't play Super Paper Mario.
But ultimately, it depends who you are, how much money you have, and what you want. We can tell you what the machines are like, but we can't usefully tell you which to buy.

Well, I'd say a PC... If you want to use it for gaming, anyways. PCs are such awesome gaming machines.
(Not to say the DS and Wii don't... There's just a lot less of them... Zelda ftw.)
But if you just want to use your computer for word processing / chatting / whatever... Then I don't see what's wrong with your current machine. Unless, of course, it's metaphorically falling apart. Then go ahead. :D
Either that, or the Wii. I want a Wii myself, but I'm broke and lack a job. Feh.

how much money do you have to put towards a PC? cause a worthy gaming rig is $1,000 or better. the Wii is $250, so much cheaper, and the DS is cheaper still. thing is, each of those things gets less useful as you go down the line. on the other hand, if you only have $400 or $500 for the computer, then there's no point in bothering to buy the computer, but you COULD get a wii and good collection of games, or a DS and a ton of games.
so the choice mainly hinges on how much money you have and what you need mostly. if it's just for gaming, then the money is the deciding factor.

You can get a perfectly good pc for $500
The question here is whether he wants it for gaming or not, which still isnt clear

Oops, I was thinking in £s. A £500 gaming machine could keep up with the latest releases for maybe a year
Depends what sort of latest releases you're looking at, something like TF2 runs even on 3 year old stuff. Only a few games every year demand the latest stuff, and they're often not worth bothering with.
You could buy a Wii and a DS for less than the PC. But if the PC is for something important like work, then that's the obvious choice.
Wii. Mainly because it can be used for so many different things.
Heck, you can even surf (http://youtube.com/watch?v=c5j4McFzies) the web on it.

The PC will mostly be used to play games and "surf" the internet, but also for work and such now and then. Although, a PC that costs around $500 is what I can afford at the moment, not more.

Well, the shared PC works fine, but I would want a PC "that I can use whenever I want",so I won't be disturbed by "Hey,it's my turn!" or "I need to use it for <Put computer work here>". :p

I have never played on a Wii before,so I'm not sure how it is like, surfing the net is an interesting feature though.
"Get pitted,so pitted,like that".
Seems like it's either a Wii or a PC then. A DS would be nice for WOW2 or "Drawn to life" though, but I don't think it's worth it.
I'm not so good with computers. :p
But I guess Google is my friend in this matter?A good site, or a friend who knows their stuff and some common sense will probably do. So long as all the components you buy are compatible, all you have to do is click 'em together and put a few screws in.
id get a pc, vastly more games for it then any other platform :P especially with the advent of emulators... you got the whole SNES/NES/Genesis/etc. plus all your favourite windows/DOS/Linux/Macintosh games.
Your PC's gaming ability will be severely limited with a $500 limit. That's £250 to me, and you can only just get a decent graphics card with that. For gaming, and that budget, I'd say your best bet is a Wii.

so would I, I just spent £800 on PC parts to get up to the standards of new games and I already had the case, PSU, monitor, DVD-drives, keyboard etc.
Actually, i normally find that getting a decent monitor is normally the deal breaker on a new PC with a small budget.
The PC would be the best option but with only £250 to spend you won't have much of a hope getting anything usefull. So I would have to suggest the Wii and a copy of Zelda.
if you like a lot of games then getting a pc is the way to go. you dont need a decent pc to enjoy over 80% of games available for it you just need something other then on board video... a geforce 6600 or even a 4400 would do wonders lol..

definitely the wii for that budget range. I just built my wife a decent gaming computer, and it costs $950 or so. I could've gotten worse for around $750, but by that point it'd hardly be worth having for gaming at all. $500 is a waste of time for a gaming rig.

Wii is cheap, PS3 is too expensive, 360 is glitchy, DS had a crap library of games, and PSP has been poisoned by dumb formurers asking for a port of GTA-IV.
I vote for computer.
what kind of computer would you be looking at for 500 pounds?
MrBunsy
10 Oct 2007, 07:59
A rather decent one. Come on, a £50 graphics card can play TF2 nearly maxed out, why do you need to buy the ultra-expensive stuff?
For £500 I'd probably go the AMD route, as it's slightly cheaper, and you could get:
Decent ASUS MB - £50
single core Athlon 4000 - £50, or dual core under £100
2 gig RAM £100, 1 gig £50
Graphics card, 7600 or thereabouts £50-70
Hard disc, 250 gigs £30
17" LCD - £100, probably get a 19" for that if you look hard enough
And then CD drives, keyboard, mouse, etc can be made up with the rest. You'd get a little more power down the Core Duo route, but they're currently much more expensive.
Sure, it won't play Crysis particularly well, but only people who spend far too much on their PC can currently. You'll be able to play TF2 maxed out, and the unreal 3 engine reasonably well.
edit: forgot power supply - £50 for a decent quiet one.

Ah, bugger. Forgot that. Aren't computer things cheaper over in the US though? You could still scrape the bare bones together, decent MB, upgrading the CPU, graphics card and RAM when you get more money.
custom made computers with china-made parts?
Where else are computers made? And buying individual components from proper manufacturers (ASUS, Crucial, etc) will probably get you better quality stuff than a lot of the pre-built computers for sale.

For 500 you can buy
150 Gb of memory
1gb ram
256 Nvidia or with pixel support
2 ghz - 4 ghz CPU
And everything else (mose,keyboard,music players...)
Thats not good?
Thats more than better.

Thats more than better.no, that's NOT good. that's completely crap when you think about the fact that you're going to be spending $500 to get a computer that's going to be completely worthless within a year. I think half the games I own would barely run at all on that system. the ones that are being released now wouldn't even THINK to run at such low specs, or at least not well in the least. either way, if he buys that computer, a year from now he'll be so horirbly out-dated he won't be able to play new releases, where if he buys a wii, 4 years from now he'll still be able to play all the new releases.

I'm mostly into WoW right now, though.well unless you have horrible taste, that won't last long enough to have to worry about computer upgrades :p eventually you hit max level and realize all your goals consist of random grinding for crap you really don't actually need for anything.
so I'd say it's still up for grabs.

 *slaps* How dare you! It's a good MMORPG with neat graphics and there is more than just leveling up!check my Xfire account if you like (xelioth.xfire.com) I've got over 1000 hours logged into WoW, I've had a 60 with raid gear and I've got a 70 now, and I've gone through tons of different ways of playing the game to find the way it would be fun. the only thing I have to do once max level is:
A) raid for armor that makes me better at raiding for more armor.
B) do half-assed PvP instances that rely on my team being competant when they never are.
C) save up 5000 gold to buy my epic mount so that I can fly around faster.
none of those things help me evolve my character to be more unique or more specialized for a specific task. the only thing they do is get me better armor or items so that I can do a better job of getting more armor or items. the worst part of it all is that it doesn't matter how good I am at the game. if I don't have the best gear or if I'm even 1 level below the highest level or if my group is incompetant (which is the case 90% of the time) then I can't do anything. I am 100 times better at the game than the people I get ganked by, and I can almost always nearly kill them, but because they have raid or PvP gear, I stand no chance. hell, there were 4 people in full Season 2 PvP gear holding a base in Eye of the Storm from my whole team, because none of us had the PvP gear.
the game is unbalanced crap that favors time spent over anything else. there's nothing to do in the game that isn't a time-sink.

Re-roll a good RP server.
I already am 70 anyway.
And it's nice when you get the item you have been working for,or when you hit max level. That's where the fun is IMO.
Although,I haven't even started raiding yet,so maybe I just should shut up. :p
Now,please get on topic.

Well,except sport games.

So,with my budget,it's better to buy a Wii?
EDIT: Or any other console you recommend more?
-didnt bother to include all the crap-
then you should play DotA! its much more fun than WoW as you always start from lvl1 in every match! and if you do, i'd like to play with you!

And it's nice when you get the item you have been working for,or when you hit max level. That's where the fun is IMO. that IS where teh fun is. that's the problem. you only hit max level once, and then getting the items is awesome the first few times, but the other 500 times you're running that same exact raid it's boring as hell, because you don't get anything for your time.
So,with my budget,it's better to buy a Wii?
EDIT: Or any other console you recommend more? I'd go with a Wii, personally, but a 360 or PS3 could work for you as well depending on your taste in games. I think the price drop for the PS3 is coming soon, so there'll be a $400 version you can get, that's NOT completely unreasonably priced :p
then you should play DotA! its much more fun than WoW as you always start from lvl1 in every match! and if you do, i'd like to play with you! ok, DotA is a WC3 game, WoW is an MMORPG. 2 completely different things. I'm aware of the similarities, but it's really completely different.

If you like puzzle games and 2D platformers, or want to see Worms Open Warfare 2, then I would recommend the DS.
If you want the most versatile machine that allows you to do stuff other than play games, then go for the new PC.
If you like driving games, fighting games, sports games (oh wait) and games where you tilt stuff, go with the Wii.
In terms of cost, the DS is cheapest. The DS and PC have cheaper games than the Wii on the whole, and probably cheaper peripherals as well.

I'm sorry... do you not understand what 'MMORPG' stands for?I can think of 100s of ways to make a game far less dependant on gear and remain an MMORPG. as well as taking out a good portion of the boring nonsense. hell, most of the ideas have been used, just not in games that had other aspects to make them worth playing.

besides, by then Age of Conan will be out, and they're working to make it less pointless, so hopefully I'll be playing that.
