View Full Version : Pretty dissapointed with W:OW2
I just felt this really had to be said..
Me and my friends recently got heavily back into Worms Armageddon, and this seemed like a natural progression to buy Worms: Open Warefare 2 for our PSP's. The feeling that it would be a far better game with ~10 years time difference and the ability to play online (Which simply doesn't work for Worms Armageddon, but that's another complaint entirely).
After an hour of playing this game I'm simply frustrated and dissapointed for several reasons and I feel like I've wasted my money. I didn't want to believe my friend when he said Armageddon is just better but it's so true. Here are a few major complaints I had with the game:
1. The fact that you have to 'buy' anything is retarded. I don't want to play your 'campaigns', i don't want to do missions or time attacks or what not. I don't want to sit on my PSP playing worms with myself for hours or be forced to play people online or whatever in order to get coins or points. The beauty of worms is its an awesome simple game to play. I don't care to fight for options which were completely free ten years ago on Worms Armageddon.
2. You have this game on a 4gb disc, as I recall, Worms Armageddon takes up something like 150mb on my hard drive. So why in God's name is there LESS customization?
- My favorite accent, Rasta, seems completely missing from the game, along with several others. With all that space I'd prefer to see MORE accents than Worms armageddon, not less.
-There should be a full color wheel so we can pick exactly what color we want our worms to be.
- there should be a hell of a lot more gravestones and headgears.
- Do you really expect me to paint out a custom flag with all those pixels on a tiny screen? Let people import images.
- Gone is victory music
- Apparently, gone are the days of setting a game exactly as I want, I can no longer control weapons, crate drops, weapon powers, nothing, not even a blood option like the barely exciting WWP type..
3. The game seems laggy with big loading times for what took under 5 seconds to load on Worms Armageddon. Crate drops were a quick affair years ago, it seems like I have to wait 10 seconds for some dumb crate to drop on a portion of the map thats impossible for me to reach. The time for things to generally happen and take their course seems extremely drawn out to the old days.
4. The zooming feature is annoying and the game simply doesn't transfer well to portable as I had hoped. The worms are almost always too small or I simply can't see enough of the landscape.
5. New features such as 'earthquakes' and fog of war type deals seem more in the way than making anything more realistic or exciting.
6. I'm an adult. I don't need censorship. I don't care what you do on the network but between me and my friends I'd like to say or have whatever team name I want.
7. You guys should be embarassed that you still haven't created an updated 2d PC version for people to play, and you should be even more embarassed that your barely-still-working ten year old versions of Worms have more features and better gameplay and are even FASTER than your brand new hand held version.
I'd love to see anyone involved in making the game dispute any of these truths, you guys have one of the most brilliant simple ideas for a game ever and you turned it into complete crap. Honestly, I'd love my money back for this turd. A straight port of Worms Armageddon would be miles ahead of this. This is a complete disaster, a complete dissapointment. It had to be said. When I saw the review thread of major outlets reviewing this game positively, I honestly thought you drugged them all cause this game sucks.
And I hate to be mean, I mean nothing personally, I REALLY wanted to love this game, but damn.
And before you start, any response from forum members saying anything on the lines of "Well then go play WA" really doesn't cut it. I'm not trying to troll, just felt the need to post this honest criticism.

-There should be a full color wheel so we can pick exactly what color we want our worms to be.
i don't get this one either. yeah, w2 generation games ran on 8 bit screen buffers, so the limited color choices made sense. but why now? isn't psp native in 32 bit?
- Do you really expect me to paint out a custom flag with all those pixels on a tiny screen? Let people import images.
this one i do get. as fun as it would be to make flags from images, half of the flags on the net would end up erm... not appropriate for all ages?
i did see some interesting heuristics for checking images for nudity, though. you'd have to set it to some nazi mode to make sure that it doesn't let some through, which will probably end up filtering out photographs of people's faces as well, but you'd still end up with a lot more options.

1. The fact that you have to 'buy' anything is retarded. I don't want to play your 'campaigns', i don't want to do missions or time attacks or what not. The beauty of worms is its an awesome simple game to play. I don't care to fight for options which were completely free ten years ago on Worms Armageddon.
The majority of people that play this game won't mind playing a few campaign missions and puzzles to unlock stuff. It's a way so you actually experience the single player mode instead of letting it go to waste. Either way, it only takes a few hours to complete the entire game.
2. You have this game on a 4gb disc, as I recall, Worms Armageddon takes up something like 150mb on my hard drive. So why in God's name is there LESS customization?
Less customization? This game has ability to change hats, color, team flag, speech bank, customize a team, a scheme to your liking, and the ability to make maps. That seems like a lot of customization to me
- My favorite accent, Rasta, seems completely missing from the game, along with several others. With all that space I'd prefer to see MORE accents than Worms armageddon, not less.
Downloads might help with this issue. I personally would also like some more speech banks since most of them are still re-hashed.
-There should be a full color wheel so we can pick exactly what color we want our worms to be.
I can agree with you on this one. The fact that we are confined to using certain shades of a color is kind of a turn off. A color wheel is extremely easy to implement as well.
- there should be a hell of a lot more gravestones and headgears.
The Downloads feature of this game will supposedly help with the lack of hats/stones. Don't count on it though, nothing has come out yet from this feature.
- Do you really expect me to paint out a custom flag with all those pixels on a tiny screen? Let people import images.
Then there would be a lot more detailed offensive pictures to deal with. The majority of people that will play this game are probably 10-18. Less offensive nature, more happy customers. Also, they have implemented custom made images to make actually decent looking flags.
- Gone is victory music
And the victory dance. Online gameplay freezes at the very end of each match so the victory dance isn't displayed. Waste.
- Apparently, gone are the days of setting a game exactly as I want, I can no longer control weapons, crate drops, weapon powers, nothing, not even a blood option like the barely exciting WWP type..
Custom scheme feature has the ability to control weapons, crate drops, and ammo. Blood would have been cool though.
Yea, it annoys me too when it takes 10 seconds for a crate to drop from a vertical map.
4. The zooming feature is annoying and the game simply doesn't transfer well to portable as I had hoped. The worms are almost always too small or I simply can't see enough of the landscape.
Trigger buttons zoom in and out just fine. Zooms in close enough to see your worms perfectly and out enough that you can see the entire landscape, except on vertical maps.
6. I'm an adult. I don't need censorship. I don't care what you do on the network but between me and my friends I'd like to say or have whatever team name I want.
The majority of people that play this game will be young people. Sadly, you get screwed over, because it's impossible to satisfy the need of every gamer.
7. You guys should be embarassed that you still haven't created an updated 2d PC version for people to play, and you should be even more embarassed that your barely-still-working ten year old versions of Worms have more features and better gameplay and are even FASTER than your brand new hand held version.
Worms has a simple formula. The developers are going with the "if its not broken, don't fix it" motto. I'm fine with it, as this game plays just like a Worms game. And thats what I wanted to play, a Worms game.
It sucks for you, but its amazing for most of the people that have played it. It's selling pretty good and the online seems to have a lot of action on it. It got good reviews because it was professionally analyzed and it lived up to it's Worm nature.
I doubt any dev will want to reply to your post after you got so offensive at the end. I certainly don't.
dash i thought EVERY single one of your complaints was ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC and not one stands up as a reasonable complaint, you must be a very hard person to please. I thought there were tons of gravestones. A few new accents might have been nice in terms of customistion complaints, but the scheme, landscape and team editor abilities (which are very customisable) are a dream come true for me. You should try the campaign modes they are quite good when all you can do is single player.

do you, never touched WOW! 1, loved worms armageddon though.

Ah, because you said that the level editor etc were a dream come true I thought these things were seriously lacking in your previous worms game. Never mind though.

well i played worms armageddon in 1999-2000 until my computer literally chomped up my WA CD. I cannot remember all the content or even if i progressed that far, i don't remember a level editor, but as i understand it WA has been added to and modified somewhat over the years.

The level editor was always there.

i'm pretty impressed (DS version owner) at all this version has to offer. i mean, it's a hand-held version, and it costs less than 30 bucks. wow. i love worms, have been a fan since the original, and in my opinion, this is the best conversion i could really hope for.
while i kind of wish my version had more of a lobby for finding gamers, i realize that NES must have a lot of provisions in place to keep gaming as anonymous as possible, to prevent the dangers of the web. kind of silly, but i'm guessing the big N has these things in place and that it's not something the devs can decide on when developing for nintendo platforms.
anyway, i was very impressed with the game and still am. my real concern is that there wont be enough people playing it in a month or two to be able to find an online game...its hard enough now. =/

I think Rasta's in the shop.
I know Tykes was, which was mildly annoying. Even if the extent of the annoyance was "oh no, I have to use the Brummie soundbank for a few levels, how will I cope?" ;).
A few things annoy me about WOW2 (seriously, whose bright idea was the random events thing? It alters the entire nature of the game), but on the whole I'm enjoying it.
The funny thing about the "fog of war" flak event is that it's the exact reverse of fog of war in every other game that uses it (i.e. in normal fog of war you can see stuff close to your units, but not far away).
Me and my friends recently got heavily back into Worms Armageddon, and this seemed like a natural progression to buy Worms: Open Warefare 2 for our PSP's. WA was last updated a month or two back. It works fine online, for me and hundreds of others who own legal copies of it. It in fact plays better than any other game I've played online in my life so far.
I know you said not to tell you to go back to WA, but from your post it's very obvious that's the only sensible solution to your problems.

Something I really agree with the poster about is the lack of the Rasta Voice. I don't know how that got past the devs. It isn't that it was difficult to implement, it's just the fact it was simply FORGOTTEN.
When I play W:A online, it seems Rasta seems to be one of the most popular voices, so I am sad not to see it.
Well... Hippy Christmas In the Carribean to you all...

but seeing as we've got new content available for download, thanks team17, wouldn't it be possible to have ratsa speech available for download as well?

Pro tip, UMD's are 1.8GB, not 4GB.
Though, from the sounds of your post, you wouldn't have been happy if it was a perfect conversion/port of WA, anyway.

This is my first post on the team17 forum
Way back in the day I purchased the very first worms game on Playstation1. I played the **** out of that game for years. I've played most of the Worms games since then with the exception of Worms world party (?) and Worms open warfare 1.
I recently got Worms open warfare 2 on PSP and I wasn’t too impressed at first. I played a couple of quick matches and things had changed somewhat. The environmental effects were weird, the physics were slightly different, and the blast radiuses didn't seem as large to name a few.
However after I got a few more matches into the game I REALLY started to appreciate it a lot more.
Hey Dash,
Here are my responses to your …. Comments:
1. Coins: After rereading your post I realized you weren’t saying you have a problem with the campaign, puzzle, or time attack mode themselves, just the fact that you had to earn coins by doing them. Team17 gives you a handful of options to customize your worms from the get go but we are all really playing for the game play anyway, not just to put some funny looking hat on a worm. I love customizing my team in games as much as the next guy and as a matter of fact, you have to unlock stuff in most games. I personally like the addition of the coins and medals to give you more incentive to work your way to accomplish goals. I think that gives the game much more depth and something to work for.
2. Customization: If you still haven’t figured it out, you can go into ‘customize’ off the main menu and create a new scheme. After naming it, you can control how many of EACH weapon you want to start out with, how many turns you have to wait until it’s available to use, utility crates, health crates, weapon crates, and you can turn the environmental events off. All of these options in addition to many others. If you don’t like the game setting or game play, just change it. You can create a scheme to mimic WA exactly.
You can go online via WormNet and download a lot of stuff for free. You don’t have to pay for any of it with real money or worms coins. There is a lot of stuff to download already and team17 can probably add more if needed.
3. Lagging / loading: If the game as a whole takes longer to load than WA on PC, think about, your PC has much more processing power to work with. I do agree with you on the point that the crates take a while to drop though.
4. Zooming: The maps in WOW2 are much larger than those of WA for the most part. You can zoom out farther as well. What would you suggest for zooming controls? I think the left and right bumpers are pretty logical. Better than having a single button to toggle through all of the zoom features.
5. Environmental effects: I don’t think the idea of adding environmental effects was to make it more realistic, I think it was to add some freshness to the game. The environment is basically now a character itself, with its own attacks and features. It’s clever to have different effects for different landscapes. If you don’t like them you can create a new custom scheme and turn them off.
6. Censorship: I have to agree with you on this one. You should be able to name your worms anything you want when playing your friends. However you wouldn’t be allowed to play online with that team because there are probably a lot of kids that play this game as well. I believe Team17 is simply catering to more family friendly audiences due to the obvious lack of blood or foul language. I’m not experienced in this field but game ratings probably have similar standards with those of the movies. For instance you can only say “f u ck” so many times in a PG13 movie before they have to make it R rated. Perhaps they have something similar with game ratings.
7. See other posters comments above.
im surprised about crates... do they parachute down? they should have taken a lesson from W:A and the people who are now updating it for free to the public... in W:A crates just fall when played online. i do miss being able to press space to remove the para on crates when playing offline tho... its the biggest problem i found in W:A which isn't a issue in worms 2.
W:A works perfectly online, only thos who fail at intelligence suck and not the game it self. (did you ever check the W:A forum here?)
Its not a big deal, play a few puzzles, and if your any good, you'll have a billion coins to spend up 30 minutes. But thats a preference. Personally i liked having things to unlock. Gives a reward for single-player.
2. You have this game on a 4gb disc, as I recall, Worms Armageddon takes up something like 150mb on my hard drive. So why in God's name is there LESS customization?
I think you have things confused. The DS game is less then 32MB large.
Its obvious its going to have less then the full PC game. I'm not sure how large the PSP version is however. But i'd say its pretty clear, the game was designed around the limits of the DS.
Even if it wasn't, i wouldn't be surprised if the limits of the PSP would of limited its size as well. The game can't install onto a PSP hard-drive for fast loading, all it has is a slow UMD optical drive. Keeping the media size down is probably necessary compromise.
- Apparently, gone are the days of setting a game exactly as I want, I can no longer control weapons, crate drops, weapon powers, nothing, not even a blood option like the barely exciting WWP type..
The games you can have online are hard to control, but you can control the game type, weapons, crate drops on custom matches with friends.
5 seconds to load is how long it takes for maps on the DS. Besides, when worms Armageddon first game out, it took a hell of a lot longer to load a map then 5 seconds.
4. The zooming feature is annoying and the game simply doesn't transfer well to portable as I had hoped. The worms are almost always too small or I simply can't see enough of the landscape.
I actually prefer the DS version, as it seems many do, its quite nice, the top screen gives a full and accurate map overview, and its easy to scroll around on.
Of course, viewing a large map on a tiny screen is always going to be troublesome.
5. New features such as 'earthquakes' and fog of war type deals seem more in the way than making anything more realistic or exciting.
I love it, i really love that feature. I think thats the best feature of w:op2. The best thing about playing worms, is its utter chaos in action, the more that gets added, the more fun it becomes. If i wanted a fair and balanced game, i'd play some artillery game, but i find them dreadfully boring.
6. I'm an adult. I don't need censorship. I don't care what you do on the network but between me and my friends I'd like to say or have whatever team name I want.
I can't speak for the PSP, but i'm pretty sure with the DS, its a case of Nintendo "E rating" policies being enforced. Sony might have something similar, or perhaps team17 wanted to minimize differences between the 2 versions.
7. You guys should be embarassed that you still haven't created an updated 2d PC version for people to play, and you should be even more embarassed that your barely-still-working ten year old versions of Worms have more features and better gameplay and are even FASTER than your brand new hand held version.
I'm really not surprised that software from 10 years ago runs extremely fast on modern hardware. I've have heard however that the PSP has loading issues, all i can say is the DS is done in 5 seconds, and when WA first game out, it took closer to 20-30 seconds to load a map on my p150.
I'd also say that worms was designed around the limits of the DS, so it couldn't utilize the full power of the PSP.
A straight port of Worms Armageddon would be miles ahead of this. This is a complete disaster, a complete dissapointment. It had to be said. When I saw the review thread of major outlets reviewing this game positively, I honestly thought you drugged them all cause this game sucks.
Its disappointing you've come to that conclusion, you seem to be comparing the game to its PC counterpart. In that case, of course its going to come out short-handed.
If you forgot about the existence of WA for 10 minutes, perhaps you'd be able to sit down and enjoy it for what it is. A fun and enjoyable game. Its most unfortunate that doesn't seem to be the case however, since all of your complaints except 1 (censorship), revolve around putting W:OP2 in the shadow of WA.
the physics were slightly different, and the blast radiuses didn't seem as large to name a few.
Just a heads up if you plan on staying around: the DS version of this game kept the more exaggerated physics engine of the Worms2 era, so this point only comes up on the PSP versions.
I believe Team17 is simply catering to more family friendly audiences due to the obvious lack of blood or foul language. I’m not experienced in this field but game ratings probably have similar standards with those of the movies. For instance you can only say “f***” so many times in a PG13 movie before they have to make it R rated. Perhaps they have something similar with game ratings.
Yes, Team17 design games with 'family friendly' in mind. In other words, they want their games to be playable by people of any age with little objections.
