Here you go, my first Worms Comic, drawn in MS-Paint.
Comments anyone?

_Kilburn
21 Sep 2007, 20:29
It's simple, but I like it. :p
You should work a little more on the shape of the worms though. The worm on the left, in the first picture, looks like he is melting. Oh, and I think you should draw the heads a little larger and straigther.

Pascal40

Okay. Thanks for the useful hints! I'll try them for my next one.
Glad you liked it, though.

Okay, here's the second and last one for today.
Is that better?

Melon
21 Sep 2007, 22:36
Definately an improvement. I assume you've used the straight line tool because its neater than using the pencil tool?

Best way I think is to draw it on paper and scan it in as paint is quite difficult to use, but that's not always possible.

I'd advise you take a look around the art forum for other people and see how how they draw worms. You don't need to copy them, but you can still learn a few tricks.

Pascal40
21 Sep 2007, 22:43
Thanks!
That with the scanning is a little bit tricky, because... well... I don't own a scanner.
I'm drawing Nr. 4 now, and I've got a new method. I will post 3 and 4 tomorrow, so you can see which method fits better. Nr. 3 is still drawn with the straight-line tool.

Good night. It's almostly 00:00 here at Germany.

Anyway, yes, your worms are much better now. You should try Flash, you can draw smooth lines with anti-aliasing, almost as good as hand drawing.

PS: I recommened Flash as well. I normally almost never use Paint for stuff other than sprites.

As for why he has grey eyeballs, like I said, have fun with it!

Actually, I'm pretty certain in this case it's your lack of understanding of how shading should look that is wrong, judging by how wrong you got it. :p

Pascal40
22 Sep 2007, 11:40
Well, I've drawn many other comics in my life. And I never use shading or these 3rd Generation Eyes (or Eyeballs). I draw my comics all comic-y and wacky. So @farazparsa, big thanks, but that's "too real" for me. But thank's anyway!
I'm finishing the 4th now, then i'm posting it.
Edit:
@Kilburn
Thanks, I'll try out flash for my 5th one. :)
Edit:
Whoops, just found out that I don't own flash... (yes, i'm dumb :D)
@everyone
Enough for the drawings, what about the humor/ideas?

_Kilburn
22 Sep 2007, 20:17
Yes, you new drawing style is much better. Try not to draw completely circular hands. You don't need to draw complete detailed hands (they don't fit with small worms), but just don't draw them completely circular.

Like this, for example. (lol I tried to imitate your style :p )

You should do that for every new comic.

Nice comics. I like the simple art, but saving images in paint as JPGs is a big no-no because it fuzzes things up. I would suggest saving it as a GIF, or even better, a PNG.

_Kilburn
23 Sep 2007, 12:40
I don't think he has saved his drawings in JPG format. It's the file attachment system that makes large images look ugly.

MtlAngelus
23 Sep 2007, 12:42
It only does that when the image is bigger than 468*468 pixels, so it resizes it and saves it as jpeg.

Pascal40
23 Sep 2007, 14:41
Yup.
I save my pics in PNG, but the attachment system whips it to a JPG.
I'm gonna use Imageshack for my new ones.

You forgot the obligatory "Weeee!" in the third panel of your last comic. :)
I'm gonna use Imageshack for my new ones.
I just wanted to suggest that.
Make an account there and use this great tool from CyberShadow: http://uniupload.thecybershadow.net
It's faster than using the Imageshack toolbar for Firefox by enabling you to upload images directly from your desktop or even directly a screenshot from your clipboard.

Pascal40

I can see you're still improving. Keep it up, and even if you can't scan them in or anything, I still believe the best way is to draw them by hand. Get a sheet of paper and try to draw some worms in all sorts of poses. If you do this a couple of times you should imrove a bit more.

Comic-wise they're fine. Comics don't need good art provided it's all clear what's going on and the writing is good, and in that respect your comics are great.

Could someone please explain to me in what way that was supposed to a) make sense, b) be funny?

I mean, I suppose I get the joke, but it's so horribly contrived and random that this worm is prepared to shoot anything, with the single arbitrary exception of Donald Duck, that the punchline just isn't funny.

This makes me think of that episode of the Simpsons. Lisa the vegetarian I think it's called where Mr Burns goes "I think I'll donate a million dollars to charity... WHEN PIGS FLY!" And then Homer's spit roast pig comes hurtling past the window. That I found funny, even though you knew it was coming.

This on the other hand, you know it's coming and it isn't particularly funny. :-/

That Simpsons joke was funny because there's a good explanation as to why there's a pig being shot like a projectile in it. His comic, there's no explanation at all, and it's just random nonsense.

It also helps that "when pigs fly!" is a common phrase in idiomatic English, and you can imagine someone using it. "Except for Donald Duck!", less so.

I have made my fair share of dodgy posts. I mean go onto my profile and look at my first ever comment. It's pretty embarrassing. I was alot worse than you when I first arrived, but I have learnt not to abbreviate words, not to talk out my a** (yes granted I still do that sometimes) and I have learnt to read my posts through and check spellings and punctuation before posting, because of people pointing out my mistakes, correcting me and generally taking the p***. It's kinda confusing to change a character's position in a comic like in the 4th panel, ESPECIALLY with characters that look exactly the same.
In the 3rd panel, he's on the left, but he's on the right in the last one, with a different worm on the left.

Especially since he threw the grenade to the right, and it doesn't make sense for someone to come up behind him, really.

That comic actually made me laugh. Good stuff.

The art isn't really that great, but it's clear enough to show what's going on, and the worms are actually a reasonable skin colour rather than a horrible shade of magenta, so I guess that's got to be worth something too.

On a Cavern map, have an extra setting so that anything that falls out of one side falls back in on the other side. Weapons, Worms, Mines, whatever.

But yeah. That's a better joke, but it needs a bit of fine tuning, as Pigbuster said.

There are one or two issues with it, mind. What if the other side is solid land? Then I guess it'd just bounce back into your side, or explode and make a crater if it's a contact weapon like the bazooka. Hehe, you could have a grenade that bounced back and forth between the two sides of the map, that'd screw with the camera...

I presume any objects would check to see if the spot on the other side of the map is free. If it isn't, it would act the same way as hitting the edge of a cavern map, and wouldn't effect the other side. Of course, you could automatically make a column of air at both sides so that the problem doesn't occur in the first place.
A better idea would be to have a repeatedly scrolling screen instead, where if you keep going one way you'd end up at the origional spot you were in, and wouldn't notice any screen changes. Which should actually be very easy to do, if the game is capable of multiple views at once, like a regular split-screen multiplayer game.

Don't worry guys, you're only a few years late with this suggestion.

http://worms2d.info/Map_Editor#Wrapped_Map

It's an interesting idea, I'd be all for it. The article above doesn't quite understand how games handle these sorts of things, so I can't say it's the most accurate read. In my opinion, the best way to handle it would be as Plasma's repeatedly scrolling screen suggestion. When things fall off one edge, they get "teleported" to the other, and the camera is seemlessly "split" between both sides so you'd never notice. Ignoring camera issues that would undoubtedly happen at first, the major problems that I can see would be:

a) making sure things don't behave as they usualy do when they fall off the map (worms screaming and jetpacks disengaging, that sort of thing), but that shouldn't be too hard. The rope might need some tweaking for when it spreads across a map.
b) making the land texture properly match up (maps would be limited to specific sizes so the texture doesn't mis-match)
c) dealing with explosions that spread across the map edge (working out the holes shouldn't be so bad, but calculating how an explosion will push objects might be harder, because the explosion actually occured on the other side of the screen)

It would be a lot of effort, and the end result might be great fun, but I can't really see it happening.

The random-generated maps are islands at the moment anyway, and the user-made levels can be made for screen-wrapping, so I don't see a problem there.

c) dealing with explosions that spread across the map edge (working out the holes shouldn't be so bad, but calculating how an explosion will push objects might be harder, because the explosion actually occured on the other side of the screen)
Have a double-explosion. One at one side of the map, one at the other. Really, the only way you can have screen-wrapping in the first place in my way is to have objects double, for each end of the screen, when they're at the edge of the map. Otherwise for example, the worm will suddenly lose it's head at one point while flying across, because the view at the other side of the map won't show a head.

Melon

What? You mean you've never seen a randomly generated cavern landscape? Have you even played the game? Believe it or not, all random cavern maps touch the edges at the same y value, so the shape would wrap perfectly as it is. (wait, you are talking about WA, right?)

Creating extra worms on the fly would be a bad idea, the potentail bugs I could imagine it vreating might be a bad idea. It's possible to draw the objects and the landscape seperately. It might take some effort depending on how it's currently handled, but it's certainly possible. You only need to take the collision masks of the landscape and the objects into account, and I don't think it would be to bad splitting the object collision masks in half when they wrap across the screen, and then draw the landscape and draw the sprites on top of that.

It's even possible to have perfectly wrapping rooms in Game Maker without having to resort to doubling-up items, or even alternative views, so it should definately be possible for WA. How processor heavy it would be is another matter entirely.

Comment please.
Edit: Whoops, something happened with transparency...! Those people who use the retro purple skin might have some problems with the comic transparency. Just switch to the Team 17 skin and everything will be okay again.

Someone here who uses Flash should be able to show you how to smoothen your lines, because they really need to be.

Great Pascal40, you have improved a lot using Flash.

Also try in every panel to make the worms' shape the same. ;)

In your first Flash comic, what is that on the 11th panel?

An eraser.

Pascal, that last comic really made me laugh. Good stuff. Keep it up.

An eraser.

Oh, it was pixelated and I couldn't see it properly.

shadowman
26 Jun 2008, 21:48
Apparently it's the eraser tool from flash.

If he had drawn it it would've taken away from the joke.

Tadaaaaaaahh - Here is "WORMS - Create your own Comic Nr. 1"!
I'll show you a comic with empty bubbles, and you just simply put in your text and tell it to us. It has to fit to the situation, though. (ORLY? xD)

"Want to play a game?" "Hmmm, lets play catch!" | "Yeah, it's coming, heh heh heh..." "Ready?"

They're not grey, they're transparent. For some reason.

Because he uses the Retro Purple skin meaning the background will be grey. As do most of us. In order to fix this problem you simply have to make sure you fill in his eyes and everything white. Also use the Retro Purple skin to check it to see if you've missed anything when you post it.

Or, just change the document's background color before you even think about posting it. Change it to red or blue or something. That's how I check for transparencies.

Aren't comics supposed to be...

...y'know...

...funny?

And well-drawn?

Shadowmoon
2 Jul 2008, 21:11
...funny?

Yes.

And i think most of his comics are funny.

And well-drawn?

Well if the comic is funny and the art isn't great, nahhhhhhh. Paul manages to get away with it.

There's a different between what you are calling 'good art' and 'gets the job done' art.

'Gets the job done' art is the art that paul uses, which makes it good on its own. Pascal's art is messy, and doesn't get much across.

S2K, we have told you many times. You don't have the same sense of humor we have.

Read the other posts. Everyone except you find them funny.

Also as Plasma said, drawing great worms on comics is more difficult.

The main difference here, McMaster, is that I appear to actually have a sense of humour, whereas you'll laugh at any drawing with a speech bubble in it with dialogue written in Comic Sans. Because it's Comic Sans, you see, so it must be funny!

Also as Plasma said, drawing great worms on comics is more difficult.

Yes, well, that's rubbish for a start.

@all of you guys

1. Better Jokes

2. Better Art.

your comics aren't "hilarious" they are kinda funny, but the art could be better.

Pascal40
3 Jul 2008, 19:51
@Squirminator
Thanks for all the constructive critism. -.-"
BTW, it's not comic sans. Try using your eyes next time.

@Shadowmoon
Hmm. I don't really know how to draw the worms to make them better. I think I'll try some variants in a test flash file.

PS: If I look at the first pages, I notice that this forum was much better in the past. Then, they told me what to do and what not to do to draw better comics.
Now some Users come, say "your art and jokes suck" and get out of the thread with no single sign of hints and/or improvement suggestions.

They have their charm. They are not fantastic (or good, by the way), but they can get you a chuckle. They are VERY badly drawn, but I get it as part of the deal.

Also, Paul, that was fantastic.

I like the comics. they're something to look foward to seeing, and give you a laugh. they feel like they have a good cartoon style in them. The drawing is okay. it could be improved.
