In all of the older games like W:A and W3D there was fire when you shot an oildrum or a crate and I've been wondering why they stoped that. Fire was really cool and I think it helped with strategy, but now it's gone and I really want to know why. one of my favorite weapons even produced fire and it's gone and so is the fire effects.:(
WFUS was the last game to have fire in it.
the seige orager was only in wfus cause their arnt any towers in wow 2. suck it up buttercup. no fire... no fun??? who cares.
Well, it was removed from the 3D games after WF:US because it was prety much just useless in 3D. Yes, there only was one 3D game after WF:US, but still...
It also wasn't in W:OW1 and Wxbla because neither of those games were supposed to have fire weapons in the first place.
...but I don't know why it's not in W:OW2 though.

...your point being?

I didn't care for the seige orager, I was taling about that fire bomb (I forgot what it was called) and I never said that it means the fun is gone, so my guess is you've read little to nothing in the 1st post or just misunderstanding it!
that fire bomb (I forgot what it was called)
It's called the Petrol Bomb.

I know the fire weapons were removed from the console versions of W:A because the consoles didn't have enough power to process the fire.
I'm not sure if this is the case for WOW2 or not.
exploding oil drums, petrol bombs (nice);) and naplam air strikes, great stuff, indeed bring it all back

I agree! we need fire no matter what type of game it is, 2D or 3D, fire is always fun... except in real life, then it hurts.

Depends, I set my arm on fire once, accidentally, was a great laugh.
NOTE: Don't try that at home. I was fortunate enough to be alerted to my baggy jumpers meeting with a bunsen burner, and was able to shake it (Yes, I know. Stop, drop, roll. But its hard to remember that at the time!) off before any serious damage was done.
Ruined my jumper, though.
I remember making a scheme on WWP that allowed me to throw lots of them, with the option to have your turn carry on after firing a weapon. I was able to create a rather nice Pit o' Fire to prod worms into. You can tell I was bored, can't you? :P

I would think that the DS version, being technically equivilent to an N64, woudln't be able to handle the flame-based weapons (particularly with all of that 3D gubbins goign on in the background). They would have been elft out of the PSP version as well for consistency.
That's purely speculative, however.

psp has more power than some of the pcs that i played wa on. not sure about ds, though.

Yeah. So... I already addressed this.

sorry. didn't see that. i'm not sure why either n64 or ds would have problems with wa-style flames, though.

That's something you may want to ask the Teamsters. I recall at one point during development of the consoles versions of WA that they were keeping a DevDiary of sorts, and one entry that specifically sticks out in my mind is the difficulty they had getting projectile weaposn (grenade, bazooka, etc.) functioning properly on the N64. Who knows what other technical hurdles there were?

do you have a link to that? i'd like to see what they actually say. the cpu on n64 is powerful enough to do all the same math that my old 486 did, so point-by-point trajectory check shouldn't be a problem. trajectories themselves are also easy, since all of these are strictly parabolic, even with wind effect. the only thing i can think of is some difficulties caused by switching between 32 and 64 bit modes for fpu. i suppose, that can generate unsuspected rounding errors.
edit: might also have something to do with the 3-cycle cache access on 4300. that could potentially slow down the terrain checks.

Yeah, what he said!
:D
If you play a three player game on a large map with tunnels, the DS tends to slow down a bit. I assume that fire, with its extra animation and sprites and stuff, would make this problem worse?

Sadly not - it was on an old version of the WA website design. We're talking probably 1998/99. I'll have a look on the Wayback Machine when I get to work.

compared to the backgrounds, terrain, and various smoke particles, i don't think a few billboarded flame particles would hurt anything. maybe there is something with continious terrain deformations that is causing problems.

thanks.

i like the weapon that was like the airstrike but it was a napalm but the wind could blow it about that was a good move that could do good damage on the opponets but the wind could also blow it onto your worms :o i think it was on the PC

That was a fun weapon, but if there was a lot of wind it would probably miss.

I had a look on the Wayback machine, but wa.team17.com only goes back to 2003. Is there an alternative URl for the Worms Armageddon website...?

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://wormsarmageddon.team17.com has 2002 (probably not old enough).

I saw the article in 1999. I know this because I was in LA at the time.

Just as a note to everyone, it's "Seige Onager", not "Seige Orager".
Go wiki an Onager if you don't beleive me.
