View Full Version : Boomerang the most useless weapon ever?
I think most weapons in worms have a specific use. You have Ranged weapons (bazooka, guns), explosive (grenades, dynamite), and displacement tools like fire punch, as well as your movement tools - oh, and tricky stuff like homing missles, sentry gun and magnet.
So what is the consistent and true purpose of the boomerang?
I have tried to use it many times, and its almost impossible to even HIT, let alone pull off a god move with it... 99% of the time, you are better off just using a bazooka or a punch and doing some damage.
Also, its really hard to aim - if you do a full power 'rang straight ahead, it actually angles upwards. If you call it back in this situation, it usually slams into the ground a few spaces ahead of you.
I'm sure some people have had some *one off* times where the 'rang has done something cool.
Can anyone suggest any situation where I should be using the 'rang as opposed to a more reliable or damaging attack?
What am i missing? It just seems utterly outclassed.
PS: i LOVE all the other new weapons.
Do you know that you can use it to collect crates that are out of reach?

it's a pretty good weapon because you can collect crates and push from afar. i would have to say there are no useless weapons in Worms because they all serve a purpose and any weapon could be the best weapon in some situations.

I can use the boomerang pretty well to pull an enemy forwars, into a hazzard. I throw it past them and pull it back at the right time. For me, hitting with a rocket at some ranges is a lot less reliable than the boomerang. also, it may hit them the wrong way. the boomerang is a pretty usefull weapon.

It can also create land bridges, a la the Longbow.
I have thought about using it to pull an enemy into a hazard, but its just so much easier to get behind them and use the uzi or shotgun to hit them in.
If you cant get behind them, sure, try the boomerang, but the amount of times you can consistently pull off a good move with it, you are better of just shooting them. You still need LOS for the 'rang, so i would give a full power bazooka instead.
taking a turn to *attempt* get a crate just seems like a waste as well. with all your other tools, its usually easy enough to get a crate, id rather use the turn getting better position, or even taking a shot.
Im not saying the boomerang is *bad*, i just don't understand the power level of it. Between the arcing flight path and zero damage, its so very specilized, perhaps to the point of uselessness?
Land bridge is ok... ive done that before. but really, yawn...
If it was controlled like a supersheep, we would have a really fun and usefull weapon. zero damage, but a concusive hits would be powerful, sure, but it would be a rare weapon. cant really see how it would be much more powerful than a sentry gun or bunkerbuster though.
try to fly it over to a worm on a vulnerable edge. good times.

I would have taken a baseball bat over a boomerang any day.
Only thing I ever use the rubbish boomerang for is to create stairs in the landscape.

just throw the boomerang, jump and call the boomerang back, and you got a forcefield on while you're in air.
from what i've done.

So i can throw the 'rang, leap off a cliff, and ill be ok because of the forcefield?
Or walk to a mine, throw the 'rang, leap just before the mine goes off, and ill be ok?
if thats true, thats really cool, like an alternative parachute or like you said, a forcefield. Have to try it out when i get home.
Also, i have notices that when you throw it, you can keep moving. I wonder if this would allow you to create a tighter angle by throwing it over a worms head, walking away, recalling it.

I actually prefer the boomerang to, say, magnets, which I've only used a few times (they're neat in the puzzles though). I would recommend boomerang practice in the firing range.
I should probably start a new thread for this, but the magnet rocks!
It lasts 2 turns, and the best use for it is when you and another worm (probably your last worm each) are seperated by a wall - maybe a girder, maybe a small part left after a blowtorch.
as you know, thee first worm to break through gets retaliated upon next turn which is a huge disadvantage.
You drop the magnet (on repel of course). - And assume that enemy wont try to break through this turn.
next turn, open up the wall with weapon of choice.
magnet it is still going and this greatly limits your opponents weapon choice!
you can then proceed through next turn for the first hit.
i love the repel magent. havent found ANY use at all for the attract. the enemy just runs away. might as well just shoot them instead of dropping it?
weird.

can't the enemy just walk in?
at any rate, the old darksider tactic is to drop a mine not too far from the wall, but far enough so that it cannot be triggered from the other side. if the opponent wastes a shot to blow a hole through anyways, fine. if he does it with a shotgun, at least there is still a mine there to cause additional difficulties. if not, on your next turn you trigger the mine, and it blows out the wall, providing you with a pass without wasting a shot.

Actually, attract seems more useful in the real world (since your use of repel magnets seems most applicable to a one-on-one darkside stalemate, and seems easily cracked with a ninja rope or jetpack). Hang from a rope (or look over a cliff) and drop it on an enemy surrounded by mines. Heeheehee.

That mine trick is awesome, Ill remember that!
But with the repel magnet, yes, opponent can just walk up to you, but what then? Bazooka + granades are out of the question. You know if they have used their dynamite or not, so don't do it if they have a stick left. Depending on the scheme, they may be forced to make a sub-optimal attack.
Also, magnet ruins that mine trick, if they lay the mine, you repel it. funny.

that is interesting. but what if you place an attractor magnet right next to a repelling one? would that cancel them out? and how close do you need to place the second magnet to still be able to use weapons as normal. (ot: yay, dipoles)

****ing signed.
The baseball bat is just about the coolest worms weapon ever. Can we PLEASE have it back?
The baseball bat rocked, so powerful, so usually only got 1.
Still, i think the old lady was fairer, powerful if you we skilled at timing her countdown.
Id take either over the boomerang.
Just spent an hour on the target range with the boomerang.
God, its awful. I think it must have looked good on paper, and somehow got through testing, but really, without any kind of guidance, its just so hard to do anything useful with it.
Pity, it could have been so cool. As it is, it really needs either homing or super sheep controls to be a fun weapon. Remember, it does no damage! Would it have been to much to ask to at least let us CONTROL it?
maybe next time aye?

The 'rang is nowhere near my favorite weapon and I think it's almost worthless, but I like the comedy in it. It's funny to throw it and watch it slap a worm in the face.:)
