View Full Version : DS - Single card out of sync :(
Well, I picked the game up on Saturday and first impressions were good :) I had a few goes on the single player and it's a hundred times better than the original on DS! However, when it came to playing my brother on single card download play thingymajig(!) on every single game we played, the game was out of sync. There was a delay from what was happening on my brothers screen, and what was happening on mine. This meant that as the fight progressed, our worms ended up in different positions (?!) and what I saw on my screen was different from his. This meant that when I shot what I thought was one of my brothers worms on my screen - I was actually shooting my own worm on his screen!! On my screen I had won the game, but on his the game was still on-going. So my DS would start a new game, but his was waiting for me to make my move.....meaning we had to re-power both DS's and start again. Has anyone else experienced this - I know IGN have flagged it up - has anyone tried multi-card play.....do you get the same problem?! Cheers in advance!

IGN also said Multicart didn't have the same problem, which is good news, but kind of sad for the single-cart mode.

is this always the case? is single cart play completely broken?
if so, i may return my copy as defective. single cart play is an advertised feature. shame. it's an awesome game otherwise. (well, on the DS, the autoscrolling can go a bit crazy, but that's just annoying).
Each time I've played single card - the game has gone out of sync :( EACH TIME! God knows who tested that function before it was released...it's pretty obvious :|

I don't plan to use single cart even near as much as I plan to use Wifi Connection :)

this is especially ironic given that the game was delayed to allow testing! (http://forum.team17.co.uk/showpost.php?p=580796&postcount=19)
maybe it just slipped through?
has anyone else had the problem....? Must have been a gaping wide hole that it slipped through!!

Oh, don't be so anal about it. It's a glitch. They happen. It's a shame, sure, but it happens.

glitches occur occasionally, not every time. a glitch would be the autoscroll getting it wrong sometimes. however if single card multiplayer does not work at all (as is the evidence presented so far) then this feature of the game is absent and hence the game is defective and the advertising incorrect.
single card multiplayer was a major selling point for me. i won't be able to test it for a week or two but these reports fill me with trepidation.

As sad as this problem sounds, there still is the option of playing hotseat isn't there? So in the end, not a huge deal since one still can play multiplayer with a single card (and a single DS; see, you're even saving money ;p).

I was curious about this as well, I had heard of the hot seat mode in reference to the PSP version, and wondering if it made it to the DS as well.

Both versions let you add up to 4 human teams in offline custom games.

I've been showing this game around a lot. I can honestly say I've played over 100 single card games. I've had a de-sync error once.
Once.
It's a small glitch and that's it.

There indeed seem to be some issues with SCMP, but the de-sync issues doesn't seem to occur THAT frequently to label the whole SCMP as being useless. Also please do understand that it is only a relatively small part of the game. You can play against other 'locals' using multicard multiplayer and like others already mentioned; by using hot seat. I'd prefer hotseat over SCMP anyway, since it allows for much MUCH more than SCMP. You can customize literally everything, play it with 2, 3 or even 4 players! In SCMP you can't customize or select anything. And it is 2 players only.

And I was really hoping you were going to tell us that it's just a few select copies that have this problem-- dissapointing but not a game killer IMO. I'm still buying the game for all of the reasons that you just mentioned and everything else but having SCMP somewhat broken is quite dissapointing.

Do you have a DS Lite or an original Fatty? Perhaps the 'glitch' occurs more on one model and not the other...?

I agree that people don't really use single player that often for it to be the "deciding factor" on purchasing this game.
Just think about Mario Kart, and how you can only be Shy Guy if you don't have a cart. Almost pointless even starting a race;)
I've been Shy Guy once (when I didn't have the game), and I never played Single Cart again. If you don't have the Full Mario Kart, I ain't playing you. Easy as that...
Hotseat seems the way to go with Worms, unless your DS is too precious to let other people touch it :D

I use the original bigger one, but I highly doubt that makes any difference.

It's possible that it does - the wireless modes between the two models might be slightly different.
At any rate - here is what I saw:
(2) Original DS Handhelds (not DS Lites)
There was about a 2 second delay from the time you initiate an attack until it shows up on the other DS and vice versa. So...I could hear my Worm say something like, "Let's go!" and then almost immediately after it was spoken I could hear it being spoken on the 2nd DS.
The game did not get out of synch enough for it to appear to one person that they won whereas on the other screen it looked like the game wasn't over, etc.
I played 5 straight games like this with no issue other than the 2 second delay. The delay can get a bit annoying (especially the music difference).
Not sure why there is any delay whatsoever with Infrastructure Wireless mode; however, I would imagine this is very similar to how the WiFi is only since you are not in the same room you never notice the 'delay'...

I tested a few quick games with a DS Lite sending to a DS Phat and they worked well (didn't go out of sync, just 2 second delay as normal). Whatever causes the problem, it doesn't happen all the time with all setups, so i'm not surprised they missed it.

The original and lite version of the DS should be identical, all games should run identical on both machines.

Key word, 'should' ;)
The network stack is 100% identical between the two models?
I've only played one game single-card, and it desynched.
It was between a 'lite and a 'phat.

Think of it, if there was a difference between the old and lite DS, there should be sync issues in multi card multi player as well when using the two versions. Can't tell you if there's a difference between the network stacks, I'm not a network programmer, but like I mentioned above, both DS's should treat games in exactly the same way.
Well - we really need one of the Developers to weigh in on this. When it gets out of synch it behaves like it is not checking packets properly and/or whatever mechanism is used via single-card to maintain synch, so - to your point - this should be happening on either model.
I've seen de-synch now after playing more single-cart games between two DS phat's.

Who do you think you've been talking to?

Hi, I'm the programmer who did the network stuff for the DS version of WOW2.
There is no difference between the DS lite and the DS "dark" from a networking perspective.
That's all I can say about it.
^ Hey Eelke!! It's funny having you here while i'm blasting your worm-incarnation right now on my DS!! XDD
Edit: By the way, congrats you and the rest of your team have made a more than excellent work!!

Thank you for responding.
Do you have any theories on what may be causing the sync issues that you would care to share (i.e is this a known issue that was on the bug list or something not known until release to the wild)?

This seems to happen to me more often than not, I am using two ds lites. :(
I recently picked up the DS version for the sole purpose of playing 2 player multiplayer wirelessly with a single card. Lo and behold I ran into sync problems so bad that the game appears unplayable in this mode. This led me to this forum, and I am troubled seeing that no solution has been offered from Team 17.
What is the official company line on the sync problems with single card multiplayer? Is this feature officially considered broken? If not, is there a step by step way to go about setting up a game to minimize/eliminate the sync problems?
If the feature truly is broken, is Team 17 planning on sending out replacement carts to those affected by the issue? SNK recently sent out replacement carts for SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters, and it would be excellent if Team 17 would step up to the plate and offer this level of customer service.
I look forward to hearing from someone at Team 17 regarding this issue.
-DrKarl
I don't know how that would work, but I'd guess that it would be an issue to discuss with THQ (publisher) rather than Team17 (developer).
Hi Luther,
Thanks for the quick replay in regards to the replacement issue. I will have to take it up with THQ then, I guess...
Now, onto my other questions: What is the official stance on the sync issue, broken or usable? If usable, what is the best way to make it stay synced?
Thanks again,
-DrKarl

In my experience the sync problem isn't, in actual fact, a problem at all. I've only run into desync once out of the numerous games I've played so far.

Hosting single card game from Red DS Fat to a friend's Lite.
We've played about 12 matches, of which about 6 have ended in de-sync. (Even we played one side by side specifically to watch for it, and were able to detect when the bug occurred on the remote DS)
It's fine that the issue can be resolved by buying a second cart, but I fear I will never convince my friend to spend good money on it.

Some of you only experience this issue a handful of times. I play against my partner every night, and almost EVERY game we play on single card multiplayer ends up out of sync. Out of 10 games, 1 maybe 2 games play fine, the rest, ends up going wrong and my screen shows his worms committing suicide or me killing them...whilst his screen shows him beating me. Needless to say, it ruins the game. I've ended up saying that I no longer want to play against him because i'm sick of the issue.
Its ok for some to say "its a glitch" but when a game costs you a lot of money (£15 is a lot for someone on benefits) then its a rather nasty glitch. This has GOT to be the WORST game for singleplayer that i've come across and frankly i'm disappointed. I love the Worms games and they really ruined this DS version :mad::mad::mad::mad:.
