Who does what on W:OW 2? I understand that there's (at least) three parties working on the game total?

Team17 are programming and making the actual game, Tribal are doing the movies (I think) and THQ are publishing (getting it into the shops) it.

IIRC, Tribal are the ones coding the DS game. It's that same outscourcing move that happened in the first W:OW DS, except this time it's with a good company.

Is Team17 doing the PSP version? If so.... then....

1. Why?
2. Which will be "better" -- eg. Team17's own game, or the outsourced one?

No, Team17 is making both games, except that Tribal are porting it to DS. Team17 make all of the game, Tribal do the added touch screen support and other DS only features.

Am I to assume "Tribal" is the brand-new name you lot have decided to bestow upon the company until recently known as Two Tribes?

LOL. I think that you are.

(btw: I misspelled in the title.. it should be "Tribes 2")

AndrewTaylor

Or "Two Tribes".

Oops, yeah. that will work... ** enigma_0z goes to fix what has been wrought **

Team 17 = PSP version
Two Tribes = DS version
THQ = Publishing both versions.

For WOW1, I recall people saying the PSP version was better (the DS version was outsourced last time as well, but got many complains from people on the forums).

This time however, we've had someone from the Two Tribes company come onto these boards and talk about the game with the Team 17 devs, and both seem quite sure that it is a quality game.

This is not at all true Mr. Robowurmz. The Nintendo DS version is not a port of the PSP version. It does share content and overall design with the PSP version, which is done in-house at Team17, but the DS game was done in our studio.

Close, but, as Luther and Mr. Tribal here (sorta) said, most of the DS content were from Team17.

Close

...no, I was exactly right. 2 Tribes are developing the DS version, with stuff like artwork being given to them. What, you want the DS version to be a nice slideshow of Luther's artwork and animation?

It's been said. In W:OW 1, the DS version was outsourced to Brown St Sauce of something, and they did a terrible job with coding as there was a number of game-spoiling glitches e.g:
Worms got stuck in a barrel if they walked close to it.
You could fire as many times as you wanted in your turn if you held the fire button at the right time.
Worms fell through the landscape if they used the ninja rope.
And more.

This time, DS development has been switched to Two Tribes, who handle all the coding for that platform. And so far it seems much closer to the PSP version.

Team 17 are handling the PSP version internally, as well as doing all the artwork and graphics. TT just optimize it for DS.

THQ publish the game so they see a release in stores.

I think Collo2 has made clear the DS version is not the PSP version optimised. Its probably been developed from scratch by Two Tribes, so its probably going to feel quite different to the T17 version. I guess T17 just give TT all the sounds, graphics etc...and then give them a requirements that need be met.

I may be wrong.

Yes, that's about it. Team17 supply the content, and 2T do the coding. AFAIK, they discuss the game design together.

Two tribes have coded the DS version, with T17 managing the project pretty closely. We have a very strong relationship with the 2Tribes guys and everyone's worked hard to deliver the game everyone wanted (us, 2T, THQ and you, the players). The games are similar (PSP, DS) but have a totally different code-base and a slightly different feature set due to the machines themselves. Art, audio and game-play are very similar - the PSP version (done in-house at T17) is very nice and the DS version is light-years improved on the original game.

Are the graphics on the DS really that inferior to that of the PSP? Or are my dramtic friends over-reacting?

Well, yes, they are. But only really because the PSP graphics are great, not because the DS graphics are at all bad.

Thank you, I'm tired of people saying that DS graphics are horrible.

Yeah, AndrewTaylor put it well here. I was very impressed with how SM64DS looked. I really didn't care for the way it looked on the N64; Mario looks goofy there.

The PSP has AMAZING graphics, but falls short in other respects (as is the case with all Sony consoles).

I'm sorry but it had to be done.
