What's most likely happening is you have a firewall notification popping up when trying to connect to WormNet. WA doesn't particularly appreciate its pallet getting stolen, so what you should do is make sure to allow WA.exe access to the internet in all the firewall and anti virus solutions you may be running.

If that doesn't do the trick, start killing background programs one by one and figure out which one is at fault. Everything with the always on top setting should have it disabled, messengers killed, graphical software turned off.

If you're still having problems or desire additional assistance, consult this great self-help website: http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/

Assuming you're connected to the internet during the process, this is the only update you need: http://www.nanacide.com/wahelp/WA_update-3.6.28.0_Beta_Installer.exe

If there's anything else you need to install, it'll tell you about it, offer to download it for you and install it before updating to the latest version [the one in its file name].

I seem to remember the Zone Alarm firewall having a setting that blocks all traffic on port 6667. That's the port the IRC protocol operates on and since WormNet is based on an IRC server, it doesn't work if it's blocked. I believe the setting is called something along the lines of "IMSecurity", but I'm not too sure about that.

apparently I'm using the Trymedia version.

I am having the exact same problems as listed above... loggin followed by the music and color inversion then game dies.

then nothing, no errors, no notes, no signs, nothing.

I have looked into the firewall and have made sure that WA is allowed and port 6667 as an extra measure.

I opened a command prompt and typed

telnet wormet1.team17.com 6667

and it blanked out temporarily then brings in the timed out message.
so apparently it works.

if I have to wait for the CD-ROM to be able to play online, I'll just get a refund and forget the whole idea I had a few days ago to get this game.

is that the ONLY REAL advice left?
to purchase the CD?

That is completely irrelevant to your problem. The TryMedia version is incompatible with a great many things, so it's understandable that it's a lot less stable than the latest Betas - which require a CD to play.

Yup. The TryMedia version can't be updated, and thus can't be used to play online.
But don't worry. IIRC the CD game, including delivery, is usually cheaper than the TryMedia version anyway.
