View Full Version : How long do we have to live?
When is the end of the world? and when it happens, who do we blame?
The site myearthdream.com (http://www.myearthdream.com/#root/intro) can now finaly tell us how many people care. for those of you who don't have flash. heres the screenshot:
P.S. The actual honda team has not done well at all this year. their best result was 10th. [didn't they say they won a race last year?]
I doubt thoose statistics can ever be reliable since only people who care somewhat will go onto that site to begin with.
On related news, over 85% of the US beleives in global warming :)

over 85% of the US beleives in global warming :)
the sad part is: while they end the next part of the statistics... to know who actually cares... it may even get impossible to reverse...

I know that it's virtually been proved, global warming, but i feel that these temperature changes are almost too unnatural, and i cannot believe that we've caused all this climate change and it wouldn't have changed if not for us.

Not only have they not done well, but their car looks rubbish, and got overtaken by last years car with ease at Indianapolis Grand Prix. And yet Jenson Button is still going on about how great he is and how the car only is hampering hios performance.

Only vaguely interesting, y'understand.
Baaasically, I'm going to go with the Stern Report here. We've got about twenty years to turn this around, and after that we're into irreversibility land. And the turnaround has to be drastic.
Not that it's going to kill us all. But it'll still be a bloody big catastrophe.

THE CAR DOES NOT LOOK RUBBISH. [my logic is undeniable.] after all the effort they put into it, and all you tell them they didn't try hard enougth, and that their car looks s***! they used vinal rap for gods sake! also note that one of those cars spun off the road, and will get a 10 place grid penalty next grand prix. also the super aguri chassis is a modified one of the honda ra106.

Proof.
It would look better if the colours wre bolder, i.e. one shade of green, one shade of blue.
And unless people don't go on business trips abroad, and people take cars/trains instead of planes, we are doomed. And if we save energy by insulating our house, people die from radiation which would normally escape through non-insulated walls.
Cars aren't the main problem, cos they aren't too much of a pollutant, and if air travel stopped, we could cope with car emmissions.

I don't think global warming is going to kill as many people as they make out anyway. Yea, people living in the Sahel or other dry African area have a lot to worry about if the world gets any warmer, but in the UK we're unlikely to get as warm as the Med is now, so how that will kill us is beyond me.
And that's assuming the world is getting significantly warmer and it's man's fault, and frankly I cannot say I trust a lot of the science behind that.

I don't reckon it's purely down to man, although we may have added to the problems. But we had an ice age before, where it got colder. And who's to say in 50 years time temperatures won't decrease again.

[last year f1 honda livery]
This honda is better
Well, actualy your wrong because all the f1 teams improve with the development of their car over the winter. obviously honda's influence from "the idiots from japan" have compromised how much they have improved.
Honda did not improve as much as others did. the livery just shows that they are a bunch of coroporate owned robots. this new livery shows that they are REAL people.
Phew! I think thats all the major ones...
I'd just like to point out to you CJH, that you are wrong. Because saying that other peoples opinions are wrong...is...wrong.

your obviously a woman because you said it was mans fault. and your a sicko because you don't care if other people die. Technology has got us into this mess. havent any of thought that it could get us out? [sigh] people...
Firstly, I suggested I didn't think it was man's fault, at least for a very large part, and secondly perhaps I'm using the word 'man' to describe the whole human race, as in 'Mankind'.
Thirdly, I never suggested I don't care if other people died. I said I didn't see how it would kill as many people as has been predicted, but there was no implication that I can see that I don't care.
'Technology got us into this mess'
Arguable. Did you ever see the C4 documentary on Global Warming? It was very one sided and quite biased, but it did raise some very good points, such as the link to solar activity. Now, I haven't researched this well enough to make any definitive points, but there are other very possible answers which I have never seen properly rebuffed.
In the last few years the planet has drifted in and out of Ice Ages. Apparently, we're still in 'The Great Ice Age' but just one of the warmer periods between them. Certainly, Earth is cooler now than it has been for most of its history. Also, just a few millenia ago it was warm enough to grow grapes in most of Britain, it's only warm enough to do that now in a small area of the south. Basically our climate is extremely prone to sometimes very rapid change, and to suggest it's man's fault is IMHO at least wrong for a large part.
in the UK we're unlikely to get as warm as the Med is now, so how that will kill us is beyond me.The opposite actually, we'll freeze.

We are all going to die, global warming? car accident? elderly? who cares?
The only thing that buggers me, is that we are here, some joking about the matter, some saying how stupid others are because they don't like the design of a car, and trying to seem the one with the most common sense.
Actually, nobody has though of the ones that'll suffer it most: generations to come. Nobody here (as far as I know, and including me) has sons... but imagine for an instant, that they'll have to live in a world where the town you were born at, is under the sea now, or where the sun makes your skin get burnt after 30 minutes of exposure...
Keep saying what you want, I know I can't change anyone, and the proof is that nobody will act until it's too late. Maybe the too late line is further than experts said (and according to them, we surpased it already), but knowing humankind, I'm pretty sure.

or where the sun makes your skin get burnt after 30 minutes of exposure...Nonono, that's the ozone layer. Different from global warming. And we're slowly getting the hang of the ozone layer.
Although even then, the ozone layer stops skin cancer (from UV rays), not sunburn (from IR rays). So sunburn doesn't really have much to do with it.

The thing about global warming is, that it happens, and Earth will fix itself (ice age) fossil fuel will run out, we're already looking for a better alternative.
And about tech-level: just look at what humans did since the industrial revolution... putting a man on the moon, sending spacecrafts to mars and beyond!

Lolage. If your so intelligent, you should know how to spell 'junior' correctly. Also, super aguri have MORE points than honda in last year's car which means honda are in fact experiencing the opposite of evolution.
Plus, Mr I'm-so-intelligent-everyone-else-is-so-stupid, sentences normally start with CAPITALS, not lower case other than for the letter 'i' as you seem to think.

But, lets look at the whole situation rationally. Last year we had droughts in the south of England, but that alone does not show global warming at all. No, freak weather occurs all the time, 1976 I believe was even worse, so the events of one year show nothing. Had this weather continued for a few more years it would have shown a significant change in our climate, and could thus be used to show global warming. Given the weather we've had this year in the South, which I'm sure you've noticed, I think we can safely attest that the drought of last year proves nothing, and I would have thought that obvious to everyone.

In a cricket match, things happen. At a slow pace, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. It has a depth of strategy and psychology and a variety of skills and tactics that other sports can only aspire to.
Formula one is the most boring type of racing (because of the safety fears associated with such fast vehicles), and racing itself isn't exactly diverting.

Yea, it's a better sport IMO, but the thing is that your average Joe won't understand anything about the strategy or psychology of the game. I like and follow cricket, and I find it confusing a lot of the time. I know more people who are really into cricket than F1, but F1 is far simpler and easier to follow, and also has the 'hehe FAST cars' effect, thus it's more attractive to your average bloke who doesn't know much about either sport. I do think on average people probably find cricket less exiting.
I think the Lewis Hamilton effect is helping too this season, almost everyone's heard of him now, far fewer people know anything about Kevin Pieterson or Collingwood, etc.
Cleary I was the only one to see round 10 of the formula 1 world championship at the nuingburgring [curse my spelling!]. Sure, the fact that the series managers only care about money is a problem, but thats not realy my fault is it? and I watch both sports, in the end F1 is better [having seen the last race] and cricket is also one I quite like, but it takes a bit too long, thats why my dad spends ages watching it. well, sure millions of people around the world know of Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna ect. but few people know/hear very much about Kevin Peterson or Paul Collingwood. this is because a bunch of people risking there lives [slightly] going at incredible speeds battling wheel to wheel is a little more interesting than a guy holding a bat trying to protect a fragile bunch of stumps and running up and down the field as many times as possible by batting the ball as far away as possible [I also know there is a lot more to it than that, I respect that, but im just laying down the basics.]
Anyway, anymore green stuff we can think of?

No, that's touring cars (or possibly Excite Truck).
Formula One is "damn, I want to overtake him, I know I'll wait for him to make his mandatory pit-stop, haha!"
F1 racing is only any good if either you have favourites in mind to win, or when the track is wet. Then it's brilliant!

some of you people clearly don't understand the science in F1. Super aguri only have more points because of reliability issues from others. Honda are not facing the opposite of evoloution, they just have not improved as much as other teams have. and none of you watch F1 latley, I havent seen/heard of touring cars, so it must be less popular, and therefore worse. I doubt if any of you were in charge of F1, you could make it better. because of all the difficulties. if any of you take the places of Max Mosley/Bernie Eclstone, you will see what I mean.

But anyway, touring cars. Basically, a touring car is your basic saloon car, but tuned up for racing. I'm not saying it's a particularly exciting sport, but the big advantage over formula one is they don't go spinning off the track at the slightest nudge. As a result, overtaking actually means something with a touring car. They don't go as fast, sure, but I'd sacrifice that for some actual semblence of competition.

Erm...Global warming you have seen: discussThat's an interesting question. Can both last year's heatwaves and this year's floods be put down to global warming? If the answer is "yes" (going by the theory that global warming's signature move is unpredictability), then there y'go.
Unfortunately, if global warming is that unpredictable, then it's hard to definitely put a single event down to it (particularly in ever-unpredictable Britain), making "global warming you have seen" an impossible to answer question.
Not that it isn't happening, but pinning a single specific weather event down to it is not going to be easy.

well, get your facts straight:
1: All the water up, will go down eventually.
2: The Icebergs won't solidify again, because it's not salty water over salty water...
3: If you calculate the volume of that ice, not the whole world, but quite a lot will raise... for example, the town I live in will get under the sea... if it doesn't become a desert first...
Its a gradual process where the earth is slowly drained of liquid and oxygen in the air and we all die.
What? I don't know of any theory where that happens...
Also, it's worth noting that only ice that's resting on land will increase the ocean's height. Floating ice won't, actually.

But then, it's not like there's a shortage of ice on land. Antartica and Greenland, for starters.
Its a gradual process where the earth is slowly drained of liquid and oxygen in the air and we all dieThat's a silly way of putting it. While it's true that, most of the time, more carbon dioxide means less oxygen, there's still more oxygen than carbon dioxide in the air by a factor of about 550 to 1. Lack of oxygen is not the issue so much as the extra heat that even that small amount of carbon dioxide traps.
We're not draining the oceans, either. If anything, due to ice melting, it's going to go up.
and if the world heats up it wil evaporate more water you gotta think about thatSorry, no: it takes rather more energy to raise water from a liquid at 20°C to a gas at 100°C than it does a solid at 0°C to a liquid at 20°C.
In fact, what the hey, I'll calculate it for you. Say we have 1kg of water.
Solid at 0°C to liquid at 0°C = 340,000J
Liquid at 0°C to solid at 20°C = 20 x 4200 = 84,000J
Total = 424,000J
Liquid at 20°C to liquid at 100°C = 80 x 4200 = 336,000J
Liquid at 100°C to gas at 100°C = 2,300,000J
Total = 2,636,000J
Okay, I cheated a little bit: evaporation isn't the same as boiling, and it happens at lower temperatures. But to completely turn that kilo of water into gas (and so prevent what would be a larger amount of liquid overall), you'd have to boil it.

Depends on what you mean by "Do anything about it". If by "anything" you mean:
Turn off your lights!
Flush the toilet less often!
Ride a bike!
Don't litter!
Buy an electric car!
Watch "An Inconvenient truth!"
Support a race car that is painted like the Earth! (even though it will emit over 50 tons of C02 this season, and it's racing with a bunch of other polluting race cars, at an event where thousands of people show up by driving there in their cars. Irony!)
Attend Earth Day concerts! (Even though most of the attendants only care about the music and won't care a bit about the messages about saving the Earth. Then, after watching the concert and littering the ground with garbage, they will all go home... driving their cars)
...If THAT'S what you mean by "Doing something", then NO.
I mean, I don't have a problem with some of those things.
Not littering makes the environment stay pretty.
Riding a bike is good exercise, and it can be fun. (I'm not a big fan, but some people are.)
Electric cars are cool. Plus, no dependance on foreign oil. With the batteries getting better, it won't be long before electric cars are significantly cheaper than combustion motors.
Pollution makes the air nasty, so using clean energy is good.
But if you really think that you are "SAVING THE WORLD!!!" by doing this stuff, then... that's just silly.
If global warming is really being caused by humans, then I'm sorry, but we can't do anything to stop it.
Society is stubborn. No matter how much evidence we shove at the public telling them to do better for the world, society as a whole is going to keep doing exactly what it's doing.
The only way these people will be convinced to do something is only when it is too late; when the world really begins to go to hell. Before then, no one is going to do enough.
We can't get anyone to do anything more drastic than "Lower our emissions by 50% by 2050!" because drastic measures need drastic times, and most people aren't convinced we're in drastic times yet.
If we get into a mindset that global warming is inevitable, THEN maybe we can do something a lot more helpful then turning off the lights: Preparing for it.
If this is going to be as bad as some people say, then if we can ready ourselves for the waves of refugees and the flooding and the climate changes, then maybe we can actually get through this. It's a pessimistic view, but it's also a realistic one. If we did this, we would be prepared for BOTH outcomes (It doesn't happen or it does).
Most people are in either the "It won't happen" or "Let's save the world!" mindsets, and I think both of them are totally wrong.

I wasn't talking about you, I was talking about the whole state of mind. I mentioned the race car and the concert because they are hypocritical ideas.
If you thought I was flaming you, well, I wasn't.
And fine. Here's an abridged version.
Instead of thinking about "How can we stop global warming from happening", we should be thinking about "How can we limit the damage that it will cause?"

i though that meant riding a motorcycle.
Hey! I ride my bike to school, the cyber café AND the nearby 7-Eleven at least thrice a week! I'm very passionate about the environment, but looks like my parents aren't. Not trying to be offensive, but just to tell the truth.
My parents' ever popular speeches:
"No garbage bin nearby? Don't worry. The drain is there to help you."
"Ahh.. there goes the thirty-minute advertisement. Never mind, I can go for a jog in the park while leaving the TV on. It's not like we're paying for the electric. Our neighbours are. I connected the TV to their electric socket just now without them noticing."
The Inconvenient Truth is a very educational movie. ;) But Lisa Simpsons' speech (The Irritating Truth, The Simpsons Movie) is better and more hilarious. The Simpsons Movie is also a movie warning the people about the environment, in humor sense.

IIRC, a largish volcano can release hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2, amidst other greenhouse gasses. Volcanoes release billions of tonnes annually, and were a decent large or supervolcano to come along it would release much more than we ever could (although then I suspect global warming would be the least of our worries).
The flipside, though, is that volcano's, despite their carbon emissions, don't increase global warming, as the huge amount of ash and gas they release contributes to the albedo affect. After Mt Pinatubo in 1991 global temperatures dropped a degree in the following year because of the ash it put into the atmosphere.
Hah, who said learning your geography case studies would never come in useful!

Just stating my thoughts...
Society changes, PB, that's why we are not on the stone age now. If one changes, there's no change... if everyone does, it goes nice. The problem is making all the people do it, and sadly, only when all the fuel runs out, we'll realise. However, the situation improved, compared to the industrial revolution... nobody cared about nature and that.
I just hope we evolve a bit more.

He's right about Society, it won't change untill a lot of people are doing somthing. if one person does somthing like recycle everyone else will just look at him and say "good for you" but if a lot of people do somthing then it acts like a virus and spreads (In this case it's a good virus).

Seriously, are you expecting it to grow so hot that things will start spontaneously setting on fire?
In other words, global warming does not cause smoke!

Yes it is. Car fumes are just smoke from combusted petrol.

Well no, it's not at all, although, a lot of the CO2 humans release is through combustion, which does usually produce smoke as well, so they are *sort* of linked in a roundabout sort of way.
The verdict - plant more trees.
And if you didn't know:
When you drive a car with a tank-full of fuel, ...
70% of the fuel are combusted and converted into CO2.
Only 30% of the fuel are actually converted into potential energy (some people elaborate it that way)
so that means that only 30% of the petrol/diesel/kerosene/etc. are being put into good use to shift the pistons/turn the rotors/spin the propellers/rotate the shafts of a vehicle, and 70% are just being stuffed out of the exhaust pipe.

Really? I coulda sworn that 100% of the fuel is combusted and converted into CO2!
what i meant was..
-70% combusted and turned into CO2 without any use.
-30% were combusted and turned into CO2, and this 30% is 30% larger than the cumbustion space in an engine, which causes the pistons to shift/turn the rotors/spin the propellers/rotate the shafts of a vehicle thanks to the pressure of the 30% of fuel.
I leave on a holiday for 2 weeks and now... hey what is going on now? What is captain planet? What happened to the arguing?
P.S.: I have a new hobby: every once in a while i put on a suit of armour stolen from a castle, a radiation suit, [stolen from a neuclear power plant, with the words: "I don't contribute to global warming" on] and go complain at smoakers saying that they contribute to global warming and i don't if they smoake in my face they wont hurt me because of my suit, and they wont hurt me so much if they decide that I am in their way and must be annihalated. I amazingly usualy get my way, and I am planning an assualt on the government. Ive got a super hero thing going on and they call me: "Captain Planet". Im looking for a sidekick.
Really? I coulda sworn that 100% of the fuel is combusted and converted into CO2!
No way, not in an engine. There's quite a bit of incomplete combustion, but I've no idea what the percentages of the products would be.
According to wikipedia the efficiency of an internal combustion engine is actually only about 20%, I thought I'd heard it was much lower than that, but there we go.
