I know this will never be implemented, but I figured I might as well throw the ideas out here on a forum I never visit and likely won't again.
Worms has stagnated for the most part. I haven't seen anything but balance being adjusted in the last new titles... nothing that really changes the games.
Here are some suggestions for what I think should go in a 2d worms(so listen up T17, these ones are free...)
New Gameplay types-
Grab bag- At the beginning of each turn, you're randomly assigned a weapon. This is the only weapon you can use for the turn. You can use utilities like ninja rope, but if you're stuck with a grenade on the wrong side of the map, you have to make due. The only nice thing is everyone else has the same problem.
King of the Hill-
Each player only gets one worm. You gain points by staying 'king'. If you kill the current king, you gain 150 HP and you're king. Person with the most time as king wins the round. If you die, you can teleport back in on your next turn... but that is your turn.
Mission mode-
On your turn you are given a mission... kill a worm with a mine, drown a worm, kill worm X, poke a worm to death, collect a crate, cause 10 fall damage to a foe. You complete the mission, you get a point. The most points at the end of the round is the winner. You can opt out of a mission and get a new one next turn if you don't like it.
Dibs!-
The round starts with a bunch of weapons listed out. Each player takes turns grabbing weapons out of the list till nothing remains. These are the weapons that they receive for the round.
For Bounty game type-
Each round starts with buying weapons. Different weapons cost different amounts. Could you do more damage with 3 heat seekers than a banana bomb? Well you decide.
Additionally, each worm has a randomly assigned 'price' on his head when the rounds starts. The more damage wormy does, the higher the price will become. Crate drops would also include bags of cash which would instantly boost your cash for next round.
A new weapon, exclusive for this round, would be bling. It would be an explosive that sent rings, spinners, necklaces and whathaveyou flying in all directions(think cluster bomb). It wouldn't do much damage, but if your worm is hit with bling, his bounty skyrockets. The winner would be the team who earned the most money regardless if they survived.
For Vehicles-
Scattered on some maps should be vehicles. Worms can enter these and they are 'protected' by them. Some are like bunkers and just absorb damage.. but bounce around when hit(into the water?) Whereas others might be helicopters that allow you to hover and drop ordinance. A tank, a howitzer, a trojan horse... Plenty of possibilities
Each vehicle has their own hit points, and low be to the worm who's still inside a vehicle when the HP run out. There would be some special weapons that specifically target vehicles so there really would be a cost/benefit game for if you should use a vehicle.
For Buried treasure-
Scattered in the deep areas of the map should be treasure chests. You don't know what they contain until you dig your way there. They include all the stuff from drops but they could also be mined. A mined crate would start beeping when you got near it like a normal mine, so if you're paying attention you can likely avoid it.
For Buried ordinance-
Scattered in the deep areas of the map, and especially the ceiling, is ordinance. It could be an anvil, a heat seeking weapon, or just an explosive. They follow the rules of physics so if you blow up the land supporting an anvil on the ceiling, it'll fall, crushing those unfortunate enough to be beneath
