with worms armageddon, beta patch, my in-game background music often turns to loud static these days, whilst playing online. any ideas on how to fix it?

Try updating Windows. It helped me.

I had the same thing on Rollercoaster Tycoon too.

Otherwise, quite possibly dodgy sound drivers. You could try updating them.
