View Full Version : Random list: How many ways can we think of to crash notepad?
Just because I'm bored, if anyone knows any more ways to crash notepad (without like randomly hex editing the EXE or something) could you post them here?
Here are the ones I know.
Ones I've been able to get working
Bush hid the facts
This isn't strictly speaking a crash, because a) it doesn't crash and b) there is a proper reason.
1) Open notepad
2) Type bush hid the facts
3) Save it in the ANSI (default) encoding
4) Close notepad.
5) Find the file you saved and open it with notepad.
6) Depending on the font, it will either display squares or strange chinese/japanese characters.
Simple large file crash
1) Open a large file in notepad. I'm not sure how large it has to be, but mine was 26.7MB
Saving the hostfile
1) Go to start --> run --> %windir%\system32\notepad.exe %windir%/system32/drivers/etc/hosts --> OK. This opens the hostfile in notepad.
2) Press file --> Save as...
3) It gives a strange error.
Ones that didn't work for me but I found on other sites:
1) Make a new text file on the desktop
2) Load notepad
3) Press Ctrl+O
4) Cancel that dialog
5) Press ctrl+O
6) Hover over the document.
7) If it doesn't crash go to 4
Ones that I haven't been able to try:
1) Open notepad
2) Open iTunes
3) Select one or more song in iTunes
4) Drag+Drop it/them into the notepad window
5) Watch it wither and die

It doesn't like opening 3 gig text files very much, doesn't exactly crash though.
The first one isn't a crash, and the second one doesn't make it crash, it just makes it take a long time to open!

the itunes one doesn't crash; it's simply another large file
of course, it would crash on a windows 98/ME or something like that:p

It depends on the computer, e.g. if you have a stupid notebook from 1999, just open 850 KB. If you have a 3.40 Ghz, Pentium D, 2 GB ram PC, open... *thinks* I GOT IT! *opens Sonic Riders laucher, that is 4.88 MB, in Notepad* ROFLROFLROFL it crashed!  :D :p
"This app can break" doesn't work. It just shows "This app can break" normally.
"Saving the hostfile" works, gives a "0X3002" error.
The "press Ctrl+O" doesn't work.

In any case, Notepad is specifically designed to not handle huge files. That's what they have WordPad for.

The same happens if you type "bush hid the facts" (without the quotation marks) in notepad, save it and reopen it.
This app can break (fails)
bush hid the facts (works fine =)
notepad doesnt support large files... it is mentioi\ned on microsofts website somewhere... thats why by default when you load big *.txt files it opens them instead in wordpad.

bush hid the facts (works fine =)
Gave me a row of boxes when reopened. I wonder why it'd do that.
It's discussed everywhere
And I know that bush hid the facts works, I just copied the other one off a website. I'll change it.

lT'S A CONSPIRACY.
It's to do with unicode detecting. Google "This api can break".

Unicode detection
The Windows NT version of Notepad, installed by default on Windows 2000 and Windows XP, has the ability to detect Unicode files that are missing a byte order mark. It does this by using a Windows API function called IsTextUnicode(). [2] This function is imperfect, with the side effect that some small, all-lowercase ASCII text is incorrectly identified as UTF-16. [3]
On May 18, 2006 it was reported[4] that, given a file containing a phrase like "this app can break" (or even a simple string such as "aaaa aaa aaa aaaaa"), Notepad will interpret the file as two-byte Unicode and attempt to display it as such. If the correct Chinese font is installed, Chinese characters will be displayed. The bug is caused by a specific string of characters, divided by spaces. This string is four letters, space, three letters, space, three letters, space, five letters, and no terminating newline. This can be done with most words or phrases that fit into that specific pattern. At the time, a few people thought the issue was an easter egg, but that was not the case. Others at the time correctly attributed it to the Unicode detection algorithm.
This issue has been resolved in Windows Vista version of Notepad.

None of the issues occur in the Windows 98 notepad. When I try to open a large file it just gives me an error that the file is too large for Notepad to open and it asks if I want to use WordPad to open the file instead.

So, invent phrases! I wrote "f**k you mwa hahah" and it... ya know. :D
*Replace "**" with the correct letters. ;)
EDIT:
Silly'n'Random form that i stupidly did right now:
1) Write anything... From a character to a whole history...
2) Save as e.g. ANSI or something
3) Close and open that same file as an e.g. UTF-8
4) Tadah. :p

Actually, I found another way to crash Notepad. And in only 3 simple steps.
1: Open notepad.
2: Type anything. The longer, the better.
3: whack computer with a sledgehammer mulitple times!
I found that notepad crashes and closes itself whenever I click the red cross in the top right corner of the window.

What is this "Notepad" you speak of?
I have a pad of paper on my desk, but I tried writing "Bush hid the facts" on it and nothing happened. I also tried lifting 300 of them up at once, but my spine unexpectedly quit.
"notepad" is a computer notepad that comes with your computer. hours searching in all programs should find it.[eventualy] basicly, its where you put writing and codes, you can use it to tweak worms 4 mayhem. i wrote in a random font:
I am the king. notepad is rubbish[ish]. george bush hid the facts. can somone get rid of him? please?
but when i opend it again nothing had changed.Ibet its been put in because there are some computer geeks trying to defend bush. or is the writing meaning an ordinary bush? they're very good at hiding things as well... I never said any of this. in fact just dont look...at all. who put this here? why I put in quote marks? why didn't I delete this usless writing?
Pssst! He has a mac! You can kinda tell from this:
Official Mac Campaigner :D Now with Intel Inside

Well, it's only a 30 day trial, but the student edition only costs £90, which is cheaper and has more features than the Windows student edition

WRONG! They are developing Office '08, which is a port of Office '07 on Vista.

Notepad is still one of my favourite Microsoft programs.
The only way to make it better would be to add a word counter.

The only way to make it better...
...is not to use it. :p
Use SciTE (http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html) instead.
None of the issues occur in the Windows 98 notepad. When I try to open a large file it just gives me an error that the file is too large for Notepad to open and it asks if I want to use WordPad to open the file instead.

there are ways to force it to always open a big file if you specifically tell it to open one.

...is not to use it. :p
Use SciTE (http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html) instead.Too complicated :p. Notepad is admirable for its simplicity. Too many features would spoil the broth. That's why all I'd add is a word counter.

I'd add the ability to turn on Word Wrap and the status bar at the same time.
What's that about, anyway?

I tried the iTunes one. It didn't crash it. All I got was this file. And it's really long, so I will only paste some of it.

This is why you can crash our poor friend with the famous "large file crash"...
In older versions such as those included with Windows 95 Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows 3.1, there is a 64-kibibyte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibibyte) limit on the size of the file being edited, an operating system limit of the EDIT class.
It happens in XP too, it just crashes instead with large files :p
